Man you just constantly give us a masterclass in tone. I got the Magma57 recently and have been loving it but you definitely make me want them all lol.
Thanks so much shooting the Revival Drive against the Deluxe 55 Alex! Awesome playing as always. One note of caution before everyone draws their final conclusion about this particular shoot out: I have both the regular and custom full sized Revival drive, and the custom panel (which only works when the pedal is placed in EQ 2 mode, meaning into a darker amp) did let me dial back the brightness following the Twin Tweed formula from the manual - the big screw dial in the middle of the custom panel was key. I have more tone chasing to do with these settings. I hope you upgrade your power supply soon!..
Erik, I do not own the full sized hot rod - I wish I did! Why do not I buy the compact? The full sized Revival drives have a dip-switch that allows you to have the ‘preamp’ on all the time even when the pedal is off- and that is key to playing super high gain pedals or fuzz pedals into the Revival drive when going direct. If I could find a ‘custom hot-rod Revival drive’ I would definitely get it!
Hell yeah man, you were the guy that convinced me to get a RevivalDRIVE Custom and my mind has been blown by using it. No matter the pedal, Origin is so good at giving you a tactile "feel" that is very hard to describe and get elsewhere. Loved this comparison video!
Great stuff... really enjoyed. My only critique would be to include a jam track... imo so many times I have heard an amp in a box that sounds great only to be disappointed with how it is in a mix. Love what u do...
Splendid job Alex! This video was a welcome tasty-tone break in my day. You really dialed in great sounds on each Origin Effects model, and your playing perfectly complimented them. I really like the Revival Trem/61 with the brownface IR. But I have a soft spot for the Revival Drive into a Marshall 4x12 IR. More than any other channel, your demos have exposed me to the wonders of Origin Effects and Strymon gear--the pinnacle of great pedals. Both companies produce gear that give great returns on one's investment. If used correctly, these stomps level up a player's tone.
@@slideguitarist slide! Thanks again man. Appreciate your continued words of encouragement. I gotta check out more Strymon pedals. Been thinking about the Lex and the Capistan! Hope you’re well my man.
Yeah I had it dialed a bit higher than normal here but I have tons of other videos on the RD and Magma pedals in the playlist if you want more dry sounds. Hopefully that helps!
Really digging your channel so far. The room reverb sounds very real. It would be great to hear this comparison without it though, or just dialed back a bit.
I can do a video in the future using room reverb and use without it. I almost always use a stereo room reverb in my guitar tracks, even my miced amps. It just gives a great feel to everything. I’ve noticed when I had videos that were really dry or mostly dry that people did not enjoy the tones as much bc it sounds very unnatural.
First 😉 Man Alex, really love your video's/comparings/reviews!! Well done, again!! And great playing too, as always. Such great pedals!! The Deluxe55 is still the winner. Man, i have to get one...👌👌
Sounds amazing. Almost sold my RevivalDrive Compact recently, but glad I waited a bit. I need to revisit it. Can I ask what that multi-camera software or whatever that is running on your computer?
It just takes a little bit of tweaking and the tones start to make sense. I am using an ATEM mini iso pro for capture and then editing in Final Cut. It’s so easy to set up and use.
Best-sounding of all the many Deluxe55 demos! So, I’ve got a Mesa Boogie Cali Tweed and wondering about whether a tweed pedal would add as much, say, as other style amp-in-a-box pedals or Origin’s own Halcyon Gold.
I love putting a Marshall pedal into a Marshall amp but you’d probably get more versatility out of the Gold into your tweed. But the deluxe55 is so good direct as you can hear.
Deluxe61 is the one, to my ears. All the tone, but without all the "stuff" of the custom which detracts from just playing your dang guitar. And you get a phenomenal trem as well! The 55 sounds good too but if I had to have one, it's the 61 all day.
Nice demo, I appreciate seeing the whole lineup, but I wish you would have tried tweaking the TONE on the Magma to match the Tweed. I think it probably gets pretty close pointed more to the left. Maybe a follow-up with those two? I think a lot of tweed fans will be debating between those two.
I did a more comprehensive demo of the magma here: ua-cam.com/video/ZXw_GF4Fc2A/v-deo.htmlsi=sLfx0WnOwzp_sQUu and go over more of the clean sounds. This video was originally bc people asked me to compare the revival drive to the deluxe55 so I just threw in the deluxe61 and magma for fun which is why I didn’t really compare in depth.
@@SuperdangerStudios Thanks, yeah, I've seen that one! I have the Magma, but I'd love to see a more in-depth comparison between the Magma and the 55. Specifically whether or not it can match the darker sound of the 55 with use of the tone knob on the Magma. Great pedal either way. That Magma Vibrato is the difference maker between the two for me.
I've just bought a Deluxe55 based on what I've heard on your channel..... and am also loving the Magnatone sound as well.... I reckon that's what Jimmy Page used on the song Dancin' Days the first time you stepped on it.... Now I've just got to get an IR Loader.
They all actually sound really good in front of an amp. I have demoed each one in their own videos if you go to my origin effects playlist. The revival drive offers so many tones on tap while the others are a single style of amp.
Shelving EQ rolled off on the Revival Drive but the Bright Cap Cut isn’t engaged at all. I discovered by accident that the BCC still affects the sound even with no bright cap engaged. That goes some way towards explaining why the RD was brighter than the Deluxe55. Also the shelving EQ is flat at 12 o’clock. My personal preference when using the RD with an IR is to roll the BCC all the way to the right, and vary between 11 and 1 on the shelving EQ depending on what I am after.
You just blew my mind! I was wondering why it was so hard to dial it in and the bcc was the reason my shelf was rolled back. Just went back to it and there was way more body. Thank you for letting me know. Going to add a slight retraction in the info and the comments. Also will do a small video update bc I had no idea. Is it even in the manual? Also my normal power supply is bolted to my main pedalboard which is used for another video so just threw this one together haha.
@ It’s not really in the manual. Also, if you are doing another video, it would be good to show the mid controls in action. I find mid level at 11 and mid freq somewhere between 11 and 2 to be the sweet spot. I think it’s a must to have the mid controls engaged all the time.
I really wish these had a speaker sim filter inside the pedal like Tech21 does. I realize a digital IR is a lot more detailed/realistic. But an internal speaker sim filter would make the pedals so much more practical for a wider variety of uses.
The Deluxe61 and Magma57 are my favorites, and fortunately for me those are the two I have. The Deluxe55 sounds super, but not different enough to justify the expense. Can’t go wrong with any of these pedals, though.
Some great tones here! Do you have any opinion on which one would make the best “2nd channel” for a really clean Fender type amp? Pop Rock and Roots being the genre…
Probably a Revival Drive Compact as you can get a Marshall/vox/tweed sound out of it. It can be very versatile so your set list can be as wide as you want!
The revivaldrive is my favorite overdrive pedal. With a boost pedal in front and the blend and mid footswitch is so versatile. Do you have tips for using the dry gain and blend control? I now have the dry gain full up and blend 50/50, half up. When I hit the blend switch its 100% drive and no clean blended in. But live that sound gets lost easier in the mix than the blended clean/drive sound. How do you use this?
I found the clarity problem live as well and usually I back the gain off on the pedal and it returns. Also the RD doesn’t really work as a boost but as a front end simulation so if I want to boost volume I would do that w a boost pre RD. There are a lot of tricky ways to sculpt the tone mid boost on all the time is key and the bright cap cut / hi shelf are a delicate balance as well. Basically once I have my desired sound in my head I then model it via preamp switches and presence and then adjust bcc and shelf until it sounds right from the amp.
So how is the Iridium holding up these days Alex? Specifically for someone that lives on the edge of breakup.... I'm thinking about repurchasing one, for the times that I don't want to bother taking my amp.
Man, most of the RevivalDrive demos sound amazing to me. I was never able to bond with mine and I have no idea what I was doing wrong. Recently picked up the Deluxe 55 and I like it, though there is a crackly note decay that I’m having a hard time ignoring. None of the 5E3 I’ve owned did that. Regardless, pretty great pedal with loads of character. Great demo, by the way. All your videos are fantastic. Glad I found your channel.
Incredible how the form factor have shrank. The 55 is considerable smaller than the rest of them. They all sound incredible. It would be awsome if origin applied that to the 61 deluxe, the revival compact and the magma. The revival drive needs to get bigger hahaha!
Right? It’s left a small pedal now. I have no idea how they did it. I’d love to see new amp pedals in this format. JTM, Bassman, SuperBass kind of stuff! A man can dream!

The RT was the best sounding trem I've ever had and the amp section makes a great always on. Only sold due to a change in direction. If they made a small box RT I'd jump straight on it, it's an absolute killer pedal
If you have let’s say, the Deluxe 61 pedal, can you change its IRs to the new tweed IRs and then take it to a gig with the new IRs, or would you have to bring your computer as well? Basically, can you change the IRs and save them?
The IRs are either stored in a computer or in a specific IR loader pedal. Unfortunately cannot be stored in the origin effects oedals. TC electronic makes an affordable one!
