This is the US release with Max Bacon, around February 1988 - US releases tended to lag six months or so behind Europe - if they were even released here at all. That same month, this video had heavy airplay on MTV (back when the "M" in "MTV" actually meant something) as its "Breakthru Video of the Month".
This was the original version on the US release. I can't remember if this song came out before or after Max became lead singer of GTR. The 80's is where everyone got ticked off at all the prog artists making their music a little more radio friendly. I till take ANY of their 80's work over the 90's and beyond.
Jim Price certainly did a good job of sounding like Max Bacon on the UK/European version. This is the first time I've heard the Max Bacon version. I like it just as much.
Brilliant video, showing MO at his best. It even includes the iconic Mike and guitar silhouette on the wall. The guitar solo is epic and the song moving and catchy. If you like real music listen to MO. Thanks for posting.
@explodingfirst Your description still, after nine years, claims incorrectly that this is the 1987 UK version with Jim Price singing lead. This is something you need to correct, as this is actually the 1988 US version with Max Bacon singing lead. Thankyou for your attention.
@garymixer That may be true. My cassette version from the 80's is not the same version that I got when I bought the CD some odd years later and it definitely sounds different.
This is the Max Bacon version. I always liked Max's version better. When I went to replace my Islands CD they swapped it out with the Jim Price version. Never heard why. Max's vocals seems to fit Mike Oldfield's very well. It is too bad he didn't do a lot more with him.
Loved this song as a kid back in the day. Never knew its title nor singer. Twenty years after, first thing I ever search the first time I could reach internet was "songs with the words Magic Touch" or whatever. I found it, and I even bought the LP. Great song!
If Max Bacon's voice sounds familiar, that's because he was the vocalist for the 2 guitar rock band band GTR with the double Steve's. Steve Howe & Steve Hackett.
That's not too far out, at least vocal-wise - Dennis DeYoung could definitely fare well with Max Bacon. In the guitar match-up, however, I'm afraid Tommy Shaw, great as he is, would find his ass totally "pwned"... ^_^
@jeremykyleftw That is correct - Price on the European record, Bacon on the US record and in the video (and our cover art for the Islands album was different from the European release as well). I like Bacon's voice much better, but I preferred the European album cover art. ^_^
The vocals on the UK / European version of Islands were performed by Jim Price, and can also be heard on The Wind Chimes video album. However, this is the vocal of Max Bacon, from the US version of Islands, and the video released to MTV.
This is Max Bacon Singing, not Jim Price. Jim Price sucks, IMO... Max Bacon can carry a tune. When I first heard this song when it came out, I thought it was a new GTR song!!
This is an excellent song with Anita Hegerland on vocals Mike!
Mike Oldfield shows his off magnificent guitar work. God Bless
That solo is one of his best of his pop songs.
Almost agree
Far above the clouds , live in London ‘98
That one can take you anywhere
I totally agree 💯
The guitar solo alone is worth the price of admission. Wow!

Anita Hegerland's vocals is sublime...

Who's listening to this masterpiece in 2020?
Not me (I mean, I was, but not this time)
Jim Price certainly did a good job of sounding like Max Bacon on the UK/European version. This is the first time I've heard the Max Bacon version. I like it just as much.
Beeeeest video album
please... please... tell me its more than once in a lifetime... my blue night came, and now she's gone,,,
This solo made me want to play guitar.
Jim Price? More like Max Bacon. :)
Bacon has a fantastic voice, I wish he'd done more recording with GTR and Oldfield. :/
Qué pasada! Pure 80s...pure quality! 🔝
Magic Mike's guitar touch, absolutely.
1:54 My favorite part of the video! 🤣
One of my faves of his. The lyrics really resonate with me.
Genialne gitarowe solo

What a guitar solo…. Omg.
Epic!
There's just no way you can't want to yell this at the top of your lungs like I did, like he did.
@explodingfirst Your description still, after nine years, claims incorrectly that this is the 1987 UK version with Jim Price singing lead. This is something you need to correct, as this is actually the 1988 US version with Max Bacon singing lead. Thankyou for your attention.
He is one of the best songwriter
Mike Oldfield forever...
Thanks for posting!
Curioso.
The guitar is magic.
Mike and Max ( Bacon ) .....fantastic guitar and fantastic voice
NOT a very good collection of Oldfield, he prefered instumental music. That's where he's the best!
Always loved this song and heard it a lot back in the day, but never knew its title or singer. It was my very first internet search. Thanks Altavista!
Oh I remember playing this cassette so much. Such a well put together song, and the singing! Loud and powerful!
Max Beacon .. the milkman !
And great singer !
God help me I like this song. A bit pitchy, bit clanky, but the harmonies are good and that chorus and pentatonic guitar solo friggin rock
I think this is actually from the US release of the track which featured Max Bacon on vocals. Great song!
ahhh, the sound that only a Fender can produce !
Definitely Max Bacon.
Is that Daddy from Keeping Up Appearances?
Fun fact : That song is from 1988 toward the end of the eighties ! 💕
Yeah I know : Stylistically speaking it shows ... 😂
1987 album.
@garymixer That may be true. My cassette version from the 80's is not the same version that I got when I bought the CD some odd years later and it definitely sounds different.
Beautiful video !
This wonderful symbolic & sensitive imagery casts its own spell on you.
And the music: Great !
Thank you ! Ute.
I wish he would make another album with Maggie Reilly
Maggie Reilly is 64 seems the "good old days are gone" I'm sure her voice is not the same.
I'm having so much fun here looking at all these old cinematic effects
awesome, except the main vocals here are from Max Bacon and not Jim Price (as specified above)
I'm not a big Mike Oldfield fan but I really like this song a lot.
WAH WAH
There´s another version (for the US issue) MAX BACON on vocals
Max Bacon rules!!
Jim Price? Sounds like Max (Bronz, GTR) Bacon to me!
This is the Max Bacon version. I always liked Max's version better. When I went to replace my Islands CD they swapped it out with the Jim Price version. Never heard why. Max's vocals seems to fit Mike Oldfield's very well. It is too bad he didn't do a lot more with him.
He has a slightly lower voice than Jim Price. I like both versions. I can't decide which is best.
@@jj-or2jn Yes, brash is a good word to describe his voice.
Mike recorded several songs with him on the album Earth Moving.
For some reason this song sounds like a Styx song, I can easily picture Styx doing this song
Even MTV played this one, to their credit.
Loved this song as a kid back in the day. Never knew its title nor singer. Twenty years after, first thing I ever search the first time I could reach internet was "songs with the words Magic Touch" or whatever. I found it, and I even bought the LP. Great song!
Mike isn’t the vocalist…two different singers…the European version is sung by Jim Price…American version by Max Bacon…
Excellent job. Thanks Ute.
Greetings to the two.
Shon
Such a good album.
Max Bacon definitely ...
Without knowing that it is Mike, I would've thought it was mid 80's Yes.
Yes didn't put anything out in the mid 80s except a half baked live album.
💥💥💜💜💥💥
Jim version!!
If Max Bacon's voice sounds familiar, that's because he was the vocalist for the 2 guitar rock band band GTR with the double Steve's. Steve Howe & Steve Hackett.
Mike jestes wielki dla mnie kocham Twą muzykę ...
Very nice

^_^

So 80's

Why this sounds like something from Patti Smith?
I love this song hey I had lp
@vvewa1 zgadzam się na 100%
double check..I think Max Bacon is the vocalist
Vocals are by Max Bacon from GTR and Bronz
How is it that a voice like this never found its way into a band of its own??? After GTR that is! And where is Max today???? Anyone!!!
Hello, I believe that max now owns and runs a pub in West Cumbria.
Sorry, no, the vocals are by Max Bacon
0:05 Alfred Hitcotsh? ... Franco?
Lijepa prezentacija gradjevine - kao na Euru
Miko super
Que guapo
a que album pertenece la cancion?
Islands...
Błąd w opisie.
who the f is jim price I bought islands and it has Jim price ??? not max bacon
This is Max Bacon Singing, not Jim Price. Jim Price sucks, IMO... Max Bacon can carry a tune. When I first heard this song when it came out, I thought it was a new GTR song!!
That was such a flop. Terrible.
