@@fettel1988 haven't seen ghost stories aside from a few clips, but I heard they were drunk during most of the recordings for that, so the entire thing may as well be a blooper.
Doug Smith, the dub voice for Kintarou, was actually a graphic designer/artist working for ADV Films who had, IIRC, no previous acting experience. I think he may have actually designed the covers for the VHS release of the series, as well as many other contemporary releases. The dub is a classic example of the first generation of Houston-based dubbing, featuring actors who were soon to leave the studio and who have done little to no dub work since, such as Kim Sevier and Tristan McAvery.
The show wasn't being progressive, there really were more women in tech at the time (perhaps not jiggly supermodels though). Computing used to be seen as a woman's profession. Lots of early computer science advancements were made by women. Myriad factors lead to fewer and fewer girls entering the computer science courses in education (and STEM in general). One example would be consumer PCs being perceived as toys for boys, so boys had much higher familiarity going into computer science 101, and thus had lower dropout rates, particularly once those courses started assuming that familiarity and not having any sort of catch up courses for true newcomers.
I love the dub for this so much. It "feels" like a fandub but following the actual show's plot, I feel like the VA's were just given freedom to do what they please while following the plot. It helps that the show is down right hilarious and lends itself to having diverse and comedic voices. Also the random changes in voice quality just adds a special note to the series for me, showing its age a little back when errors like these were more prone and accepted.
20:23 Caleb isn't too far off here, and also with the "he's actually a genius" comment. In the manga chapters that aren't animated, the series strays away from being this comedy and becomes a sort of disturbing hentai social commentary with a kind of hippie philosophy. It turns out that Kintaro's behaviour, such as his seeming lack of dignity, his freeter lifestyle, his dropping out of college to study the world for himself, etc, is rooted in wisdom he gained from his past experiences. Unfortunately it seems the manga was cut short and ended in the middle of his backstory so we don't know all of it.
Not only a great performer but a great person. I’ve met him several times at conventions and he is amazing. Dude’s also an artist and he gave really great words of encouragement to my sister who was a budding artist just starting out at the time.
"He has a relationship with this bike" I don't know if I want to put it here or on 6. The bike was a parting gift, from the man who gave Kintaro the idea to see the world whilst truly free
The name of the anime kinda gives away what Kentarou is. He's literally a golden boy, someone that no matter what he touches it immediately turns into gold.
I finished binging this show like a month ago and it's easily in my top 5 comedy anime ever. I'm so glad yall are watching this especially after Prison School.
My favorite Kintaro lines from this episode. I swear this is one of the funniest animes I've ever seen😂😂😂😂 1. Kintaro: "That was educational." 2. Kintaro: "I want to work!! I want to program!! condem me if you will, but first see what I can do!!!" 3. Kintaro: "At last, I shall demonstrate my computer skills! Since I didn't have a computer, I had to teach myself using a keyboard...made of paper." 4. Kintaro: "Nothing, this is so educational!" 5. Kintaro: "A Black Bra!!, Life is a mystery...I love research." 6. Kintaro: "(buzzer sound), Don't waste energy...Conservation is cool!" 7. Kintaro: "Oh please ma'am, restrain yourself." 8. Kintaro: "Those...Those were my notes. Those notes were more valuable than my life. Money can't replace that kinda knowledge...Those notes were priceless...Aww Shit." Edit: One of my brothers actually simps for the Madame President.😂
Ah yes, it seems my bois are reacting to one of THE most cultural animes out there 🤣 Wish it had more eps/seasons tho. Reminds you of that classic 90s era of japanese art/animation too 😭
19:40 I mean, ADV's dub is rough around the edges, no doubt, but I don't think it's like, ironically good, or so bad it's good. I just think it's good.
Let's go. I remembered this losing so it's a pleasant surprise to see this. I've literally watched Golden Boy like 9 times it's so rewatchable and hilarious. I especially love some of the visual comedy like the spit scene. I can't wait for the bike episode.
I recommend strong alcohol after watching this show xD I just can remember the episodes, it is too long ago for me ^^; (not bc of the alcohol but bc it was really a long time ago for me xD)
Checked out a bit of the Sub and the amount of money was a million yen, and the conversion rate was around 140 yen to the dollar so ten grand is overstating the original value in the script by about 30% and more likely based on the bill shown instead. Also after hearing it, I'm pretty sure that Kintaro's original VA also voices Saiki K's dad. 😆
The first episode might legit be the best looking episode of anime ever produced. Horniness aside, fhe drawings and animation are incredible. The car and bike animation wow.
Golden Boy and Prison School technically running concurrently?! Yes! So I freaking love Golden Boy. To the degree that the majority of my anime animation cel collection is from this series. I actually own cels from every episode except for the final episode.
dubs that make a good work by translating and localizating without changing the script or adding anything unnecessary that changes the whole context while having good VAs that does not just make an exposition.... yep, this is just one of many few good jobs done
My fun story as an employee doing something wrong (I worked as an accountant in a huge company): Because of me my company accidentally transferred 5 million Euros twice. Upsi :D
I loved this series so dearly , the concept of oe always wanting to learn more appeals to me a lot , combine that with classy fanservice and really cool animation and art , this series is one of the best experiences i ever had!
I dont realy like the dub Version because they made Kintaro an idiot. In japanese he is a genyus with a degree as a layer. Its still fun, but its two complete different people. Just watch the same Episode with sub and you know what i mean.
I can't wait to see there reaction to the best part of this anime and for those who know STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUUUUUDYYYYYYYYY
God this dub. 😂 I never expected you guys to react to this series. A shame you already watched Ghost Stories cause I would have loved to see you react to that.
I worked a minimum wage job as internet tech support for a cretin who was 3x oversubscribed on his bandwidth so I could pay $20 in 1990's dollars for a tape with two of these episodes on it ($25 if you wanted subbed!!!). A lot easier to get into anime these days.
I've heard that the manga starts off pretty softcore and then gradually turns into basically hentai. The anime adapted only a little but it's still amazing in its own right!
Oh man... This brings back memories.... Aw, man dubbed? Come on... You should watch the Japanese with subs, because the VA does Kintaro is the same actor that did Kaneda in Akira.
lol even creating software you still need to run the program for bugs which makes you change the syntext then rerun the software which creates more bugs if your syntext is wrong it just takes time.

i dont know if you boys are ready for this ride.
I'm surprised this reaction is even on youtube, one of my favorites, and few that are dub worthy.
This and the infamous Ghost Stories dub had to be the hardest to record without 10000 bloopers
@@Serrovin yeah, I was surprised they can put this on youtube... but I am totally in for this - this is so nostalgic and just hilarious

yeaaaaaaaaa it got weird
BRO THE KINTARO ACTOR KILLS THIS! ONE OF THE BEST COMEDY DUBS XD
Cant wait til they get to the swimming episode

I'm proud to say I still own all VHS tapes 😂
Watched this on VHS, too! (But don't own them still.)
Tbf Computer Science (my current major) was pioneered by women. Grace Hopper and Ada Lovelace are just some names off the top of my head.
When he catches the spit I almost cried
"He has a relationship with this bike"
I don't know if I want to put it here or on 6. The bike was a parting gift, from the man who gave Kintaro the idea to see the world whilst truly free
I had never heard of this anime, so I looked it up and was surprised to find that the author had a background working as a math teacher.
I seriously can’t wait till we get to the swimming episode
Kintaro is putting 150% of his soul into his performance and he really didn't need to.
It was very educational for him
The name of the anime kinda gives away what Kentarou is. He's literally a golden boy, someone that no matter what he touches it immediately turns into gold.

golden boy?? unexpected!!! was literally thinking about "how's my swimming?" yesterday, what is this witchcraft? xD
This series is peak comedy. So stupid it's hilarious.

True but most shows would just convert using 100 yen to 1 dollar for easy convenience since conversion rates are always changing.

Yo you guys did it!..
Finally someone reacted to Golden Boy! I know for sure you guys had a GREAT time watching this haha!
oh my god the scene where she spits and he is just there, mouth open, waiting for it. genius.

Fun fact, in Japan most people do bike on the sidewalk, especially in the city.
omg. yes, yes, yes! so glad this was chosen and EXTRA glad it's the dub!!

Me encanta esta serie, en especial este primer episodio
I LOVE this anime! My buddy showed it to me back in college. Absolutely hilarious!
I feel like this show is so bad that it's good just like how the main character is so stupid that he is smart. 🤣
Damn, that takes me back.
I was still going to school myself when I watched that
Oh my god. Golden Boy. Chef's Kiss.
Just the fact that you know of Golden Boy is enough to praise. One of the good ones.
OMG,this dub is hidden gem.
You must, no you Must see The Wallflower
This, Ghost Stories, and strangely Yu-Gi-Oh GX are the funniest dubs I've seen
OMG GOLDEN BOY WON?!! NICE!
It didn’t even win any polls, Jacob just outright picked it as the next show after Symphogear. Nevertheless, it’s a good time!
I was so excited when I saw them come up, doubly so when I saw it was the dub.
LOL! bro a surprise to be sure but a welcomed one! i remember watching this with my older bro back in the day
Well... This comedy didn't really click with me. So, you guys enjoy it! :)
Have thought about watching Komi Can't Communicate? I think you guys would love it!
They’ve already read the manga up to a certain point
@@Cryogenx37 Oh, okay!

The manga is legendary, the anime is barely a teaser of it.

Yoooooooo how did I miss this, I love golden boy so much
Is it good anime ?
The Manga is straight up hentai, especially when the story picks up where the anime stopped.
Ah yess… Golden Boy 💦
