The key to this job is the be as swift as possible. I've been dishwashers for about 4 months and I've caught as much speed as the dishwasher that has a 15 year tenure washing dishes. Working repetitively let's you create your own techniques and shortcuts that reduce time and still get the job done. Managers love hard workers so just work hard and good things will eventually come. You could even move up to cook or kitchen manager if you want to work in the restaurant industry. Don't let anyone treat you like trash because honestly... Without a dishwasher, the whole restaurant falls to shit.
I'm a dishwasher at a busy bar in Canada and I've been a dishwasher for 2-3 years and I'm 18. I make good money and I'm really quick. You learn how to be fast and it's better than cooking. I used to be terrible when I started at this bar 6 months ago but I learned to be fast and now I do everything in the back of house from cooking to prepping food to washing dishes. I'm so proud of myself.
@@kbs1212 thanks hahaha. I'm 25 now and work for an NHL team as a chef. I worked my way up in my field. I'm looking back at this and I thought I was gonna be with that company forever but I worked my way up from dishwasher to everything in my career so far with many different companies. Never give up and follow your dreams and goals
I enjoyed being a dishwasher when I was younger...Ive always liked jobs where I work alone and not side by side with someone..perfect job for a young person
I am a dishwasher, and it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Always be sure to put a bunch of dishes, and not just one or two. Make sure that your sink is filled with sanitizer that can clean the dishes as it will make it a lot. Yes, it can demand a lot of speed, but it actually isn't that hard to build up if you do it correctly. One last tip would be to not waste your time hosing down just one or two dishes for so long as the dishwashing machine may be able to do the work. It can also be a lot of fun if you're doing it with a second dishwasher. Anyhow, best of luck to all of the dishwashers out there!
Washing dishes was one of the first jobs I ever had. I HATED it at first and feared it a lot because I didn't know what I was doing and I would always get backed up. I was young back when I started and didn't know how to just keep the dishes moving and just over-thought everything. After a little while, I figured out how to wash the dishes quickly and effectively, and I came to absolutely LOVE that job. I just loved to keep everything moving, never getting backed up, and getting what the front and back of the house needed whenever they needed it. LOVED that job. If any of you are thinking about getting a job washing dishes or bussing tables, DON'T overthink anything. It is VERY SIMPLE. The main concept is to keep the dish machine running. Rack the plates, spray off or scrape most of the solid foods, and put em through. Put the dishes where they need to go and just keep it moving. You guys got this!
you guys really should get paid more. i work as a short order cook and we all take turns washing everything. couldn't tell you how many cuts I've had all over my hands. I really respect you guys for your work! Cause, hello, without them, we wouldn't have dishes to plate any food ;) Great job, dishwashers!!
I started dish washing not so long ago and I believe the toughest part about it is learning where everything goes. And also, you need to keep a quick pace while working so the dishes won't stack up all over the place.
Both my parents were dishwashers at one time which is why I do the dishes at home every day. They both have arthritis so it was tough as hell for them. Mad respect to all the undervalued dishwashers out there!
Started my first job as a dishwasher a few days ago and man is it hard! The people training me were working other areas in the kitchen and on top of that spoke very little English. Thankfully it only gets easier the more time you spend in the dish area, as you learn techniques that allow you to maximize efficiency, you'll get into a flow that makes your job so much easier. Don't be afraid to ask questions, as every kitchen operates differently and no single UA-cam video will prepare you for the unique work environment you'll be in. Shout out to all the dishwashers busting their asses for hours each week for not enough pay... From having dirty glass water drip onto your head to scraping nasty food out of sink drains, dishwashers really are the backbone to any restaurant.
Your right about the YT video preparations. I have to stop looking for advice everytime I get a new job, b/c the last previous 2 jobs I had "Lowes/Target" had their own share of problems that these videos never covered. If management is bad then your job experience will be rough from start to the end regardless how brain dead the job can be.. The one thing Im gonna love being a dishwasher is being by myself lol
There's alot more then moving fast. You get wet you have no breaks basically eating left over food lol and you have to work hard and extremely fast. Basically the chef's and everyone else is your boss lol you need to be strong and tell the waiters to stack up your dishes the right way some listen some dont give a fck lol but is quick money lol I've literally walked out and way from jobs during the rush hrs lol especially when you get your check lmso
I started my job as a dishwasher today and it was hands down the hardest thing ive ever had to do. The dishwasher teaching me everything didnt speak one word of english. Not to mention i had to return the dishes to the kitchen, and since its my first day i had no clue where anything went, causing the dishes to pile up. If i didnt have to bring the dishes back to the kitchen it wouldnt be so bad, but with about 100 dishes per every 10 minutes and having to carry them back to the kitchen, it was fucking hell.
Yh Its pretty hard at the start, you have to get used to it, I was the same bit slow when I started because you have to get used to where all the equipment go's back, put things in right places, but you learn as you go along you will get faster naturally and get into a routine, Its a lot easier after you pick things up, always prioritise on getting plates back on the pass so the chefs have enough for service plus pans back constantly, when you beging at a place it sure helps if you have another person training you showing you the basics anyway. Keep with it mate, you will be fine
That's funny as hell.Your a good one because I would leave those Dam Dishes.or demand more money.People are tired of the company get over. These company think your REBOTE SLAVE . Tell them to kiss your ass.or buy a new dish washing machine.
the key to this job is to literally do more work than anyone else in the restaurant. and starve for raises, and be able to tolerate a shit load of stress and emotional abuse. oh, and spray off dishes. and pick up after everyone else's laziness.
@@kieronr5999 lol amen to that. I just started dishwashing. My first time working in a restaurant. And well I had to throw off the vibe of I'm "the shit" lol so incase someone wanna get mouthy we can step it outside anytime. Lol but really I'm just wanting money and well it's the only job I found thatll hire me quickly due to all this virus going on.
@@dudefellow7219 Can I ask where you work? First job and there was only cook available which seems to be knowing how to do almost everything. It was a nightmare when I forgot how to gather the food for takeout so I ended up just cooking.
@Chase Lippus leave any plates/bowls that have something that is hard to remove soaked in hot water and wash the easy stuff first. Then once it’s been soaked in hot water for at least 5-10 minutes wash them. And try not to over think. When I was at work and the people would bring in stacks of dishes when I’m already behind. If I think about it I get stressed out and makes the job more difficult. Just stay focus and toughen that stuff out. Trust me bro we know how you feel. I have respect for us dishwashers. You got this. Just try to stay positive.
I am dishwasher at a italian restaurant. Been doing it for almost 5 years now. Sad times. But I;m very good at it. Went trained many dishwashers in the proccess. The only thing that gets on my nerve about the is when we are busy the cooks burn the hell out of the pots and pans.
John Varney How familiar are you with the machine and dispensing equipment the company supplies to your restaurant? You're probably familiar enough to go to work for them and double your income.
I am 1y and work as a dishwasher in my local dishwasher. To be mean, the chefs will purposely burn oil in the pans right before closing ice and leave the oil or fat still in them when they put them in he soak sink. My manager says that if I leave one dirt particle on the pans, I will be fired on the spot. I have been working there for a year, and am about ready to wuid
Damn right! It pisses me off and they all act helpless can never get their plates or crocks and make me get their hot sautee pans so I could soak them to scrub.
Zeke Mystique You have to move a little bit slower when you're training someone with no previous experience, which is the purpose of this video. But you're right about it only taking 15 mins to an hour
Crazy, worked as dishwasher for 3 spots but I learned how to work slower than fast, bc I could bust out 10 trays out in 2 hours but have nothing to do for the rest of the 6. Slow dishwashing days are the worse
I'm 14 and just worked my first shift, it's very overwhelming but not that hard because it's repetitive and the Chiefs I work with love burning stuff on the pans and my workspace is a tiny area in the main kitchen (tiny as well) I literally have about 1.5 meters of workspace and I don't have no fancy conveyer-belt I have to put the crates in it manually and take them out when it's done and hand dry everything. It sucks but to have a job at 14 makes it all okay 😁
I know what you mean! I'm 18, just graduated high school and got my first job as a busboy at a sushi restaurant. I've been filling in for the dishwasher, since he's been out. It's a really exhausting job, especially because it's the busiest sushi restaurant in my town.
+hyspero Ikr. Jobs should be for the unemployed. Not a 14 year old trying to get into a good college(he does the job just to make his application look better)
jokes on you. ive worked for couple of weeks and i think i broke 1. these fuckers are pretty tough. once you realise this and know how far you can push them you can increse your speed by a lot. for me thats what limited me a lot. the fear of breaking plates.
I was a dishwasher for 15 years (simultaneous with being a cook and chef in a small restaurant). All hand wash, no machine. I was the fastest, quietest, and most thorough in that time. Probably broke 6 or 7 dishes in that entire period (or, more correctly: incidents* where in some cases multiple dishes went down). Totally taken for granted by most, except for the owners who knew what they had. Once you find your system and refine your techniques you naturally hit a flow and can easily attain efficiency while also doing quality work.
I got trained in White Spot for dishwashing and got trained pretty well be different people. Depends on the restaurant but Dishwashing can actually be an easy and enjoyable job that pays you. Loving my job so far
my dad was a dishwasher, both my brothers was a dishwasher,my brother in law is dishwasher and my husband is a dishwasher/kitchen steward (dont ask) now these people are higher up in the kitchen so dishwashers dont give up and keep ya head up
Yea same my dad cane as an immigrant and applied at steakhouse restaurant, he was a dishwasher and he use to say he use come out at 1 am mostly everyday and he said it was hell. 8 months later they finally moved him and fork their he was going to be kitchen manger but he had a big accident unfortunately
I have to manually scrub the food off the plates, bowls, etc. then place them into a rack, pick the rack up, put it into the dishwasher, take it out when it's done and then manually hand dry everything. At the end of busy nights I get bombarded with a LOT of plates, etc. and pots and pans and buckets and utencils. This kitchen is the easy life lol. I don't have a fancy food grinder I have to manually clean the sink-holes with my fingers and wait for the water to go down, I have to manually clean food off the plates with my hands into the trash.
I was 18 last year when I first got my job at a restaurant, I started off as a dishwasher and every single day I would bust my ass and go full pace mode by myself, I think the supervisors saw me and they moved me to cook, now I’m a training cook and I’m glad that my hard work payed off. I literally use to go 8 straight hours of fast non stop pace. If you guys do this method trust me they will move you up.
I've been a dishwasher for over 2 years now and it's really not that bad. It really just depends on what restaurant, the people you work with, and how the dishpit is like. It takes time and a few shifts to get used to it. I created my own system and routine for each shift. My dishpit has 2 sinks. I fill one up for frying pans, and the other is left empty just to put kitchen dishes(pots, inserts, etc) in to fill up with hot soapy water to soak so I can easily scrub shit off them later. Anyway yeah it's all a matter of speed, organization and routine. Only thing that bugs me is ridiculous requests from other staff members but little things like that aren't a big deal if business is slow.
My dishpit consists of 3 sinks, 4 racks, a place waiters and waitresses can place dirty dishes, a sink they can dump left over drinks in, a container filled with water to put silverware in, a commercial dishwasher and I think that is it. Sink 1 is for detergent water we got a nice machine that mixes dish detergent and water together and it comes out a tube, Sink 2 is for cleaning and rinsing dishes, and Sink 3 is for sanitizer water which again has a tube that mixes stuff together.
I used to do pot wash for a restaraunt when I was 17, its possibly one of the toughest jobs I ever did. Some nights it was a doddle and you got to work alone, some nights it was brutal!!!
as a veteran potwasher, who years later lead a kitchen of chefs, potwash for many was the best place to be to get into the zone and be at peace. but to do this you had to get your head into the game of being focused, organized, and fast. each potwasher does the job differently, just like every place has a different setup, as well as the chefs and waiting team deal with it differently. if you ever go into a potwash area on your first day, or any shift for that matter. focus on 3 things first, 1. what items are most important right there and then for the chefs or waiting team, possibly they need some plates, and cutlery. so dont use up the time by putting through the large containers. 2. organize the shitfest you walked into or during your shift, get all the plates, cutlery, containers etc ( differently places have different things), have them all organized so you know whats what and your able to gets more of a clear surface and less danger. 3. for a tip for the cutlery, spill it into the sink and get the cutlery rack and start organizing it with the tails down, this enables it to come out hopefully streak free and easy to polish. add the cutlery with a space with the dishes or on a flat tray with some cups etc. also dumping it like you did , will end up being a nightmare when you pull it out after its "cleaned" simply becuase it likely hasnt cleaned it, and then you have spend even more time organizing it and polishing it with water stains on it extra tip. dont have the plates facing towards you, otherwise you will end up with yourself getting soaking wet and the floor soaked. within an hour you will be depressed. face it to your right so the water goes into the sink.
@@cygnuscraft9544 exactly! I've doing this 10 months and I'm at the same fast rate of speed I was at on day one after the guy training me bolted....I'm OCD so I can do it all in my sleep.
Okay I see everyone saying "dishwashing isn't that bad" I'm a dishwasher my self and I get 10.00$ a hour if you're applying for job like this believe me the first two days will be hell because your either slow or don't know where everything goes , or will have your co workers yelling at you. But the number one # rule is NEVER LET THE DISHES CATCH UP TO YOU BECAUSE THEY WILL STACK UP BEFORE YOU EVEN LEAVE AND YOU WILL STAY THERE UNTIL MIDNIGHT CLOSING it happen to me Afew nights we close at 10:30 and end up leaving around 11:30 it
+BlueIceAni What are all those people complaining about low wages. when here they are lower and you have to pay more taxes. refugees however get free money every month, houses and other stuff...
During my senior year in high I was a dishwasher for this Italian restaurant and let me tell you...the kitchen has a special place in my heart. I worked alongside some guys who had another job apart from dishwashing. Sometimes it can be fun and sometimes it can be a pain in the ass, but regardless if you really love being in a kitchen and are eager to learn, just be patient and show cooks you're interested. However, it's a very humble job...shoutout to all my dishwashers out there
being a dishwasher i sometimes get treated like shit. ive gotta scout the kitchen for dishes and bring them to the washing area whilst also cleaning the dishes and wiping them with a cloth. and sometimes i feel like im getting paid way less for what i do because the kitchen chefs and cooks get paid more than i do even though physically i work way harder than them. its atough job but when i work i feel grateful because i feel like im doing the most work with placing the dishes back in the kitchen for use and also help with prepping up the veggies and meat etc. not a rewarding job but more of a feel good job for me.
6:00 "Before you put an dishes away, you will have to wash your hands for 20 seconds" You know how behind I would get doing that shit? The place I work at doesn't even give you time to take a piss.
Ya lol, I go through like 500-700 dishes on average, on a busy day 1500 dishes, I couldn't wash my hands every time. I just wear the plastic gloves and spray them off, then wipe my hands with a towel to make sure everything's off.
My first job I’ve ever had and love it!! Luckily my family is close friends with the family who own the pub I’m in. Don’t be fooled by this though. It does hurt your back sometimes and can get stressed out... depending on when food finishes, you probably won’t get them plates until an hour later and it is long hours... But it is fun and the staff do make it better... it’s easy to understand everything though... I got used to the kitchen in the first week of starting.
Dishwashers are skillful, humorous, graceful, stylish, heroic, energetic, and masters of their kitchen, temple. I think of what makes me happy and follow through the day with a smile and good attitude. Put love into anything you want to do and it will return it to you. Stay safe, shout sharp, sharp, sharp, and be aware when something is hot. Wash on ya'll!
Dishwashing is an art. I sucked at first, it was frustrating. After 2 years I became a killing machine. There’s days where I worked by myself and on weekends I was my one man army. Love and hate being a dishwasher.
Thank you for Showing us. How everything Works. Maybe more 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, Years old. Would want to do something like that. Some People Learn by Listening. Or by Watching someone doing the Job. There needs to be more Videos like this. If we want our Kids to get Job. Thank you.👍❤️💯
A cart? Ha, that's cute. Where I work we grab huge stacks of burning hot shit right out of the machine and get it away FAST. And hand washing? lol, dude, I'd get slammed if I washed my hands even for 5 seconds.
I've been at this job for like two months it's a Pretty easy job. Not the dishwasher part but I don't have to take dishes just yell out "full hands" or "dish run" and the servers take them. But yea I pull dishes out still steaming hot. It doesn't bother me but had a new guy scream lol 😂 especially when he'd grab the sautee pans 😂😂
And then having all that flaming hot steam hit you in the face is ridiculous. He didn't cover that 😑 or the fact that your fingers also feel like they're on fire -.-
I use a similar dishwasher in school cafeteria. We send sheet pans to it the count of section where it discharges is not a spacious as the one in this video and people tend to put sheet pans and it's so the water tilts down out that end. Before that job I worked and Shake Shack and we had under the counter dishwasher they also had nitrile gloves as opposed to vinyl which I think we're a little more heat resistant.
i start my dishwashing job on sunday done it before but never in a restraunt but the chef is starting me at 11.5 an hour and its nights from there i will go to line chef training pretty pumped video helped alot
Dude you need to move up in positions. You need more motivation iñ your life. You don't wanna be stuck doing dishwasher work for the rest of your life, do you? Have some self worth.
I been working as a dishwasher for 3 months now. I don't mind the job itself but I hate how the waiter and chefs try to use you like slaves. I work at a hotel restaurant. Some days I absolutely love it, especially when it is very slow and not busy. On a day where reservations are at 100%. I already know I will be there until 3:30am. The head chef likes to tell me I need to get faster but it's impossible when the waitress is constantly asking me to help her buss tables, answer calls for room service and deliver trays to rooms. Not to mention I have to pick up trays off of every floor which takes 30 minutes. It pays me $9 but doesn't give me enough hours. My shift is 6 to10:30 pm but I always end up staying over a few hours off the clock. I don't wanna stay on the clock and do the extra work because then the head chef will start Bitching and then I'll most likely get fired
They cannot make you work without being paid for it. Maybe you could talk to whoever is in charge about your concerns with the job? You're only one person.
PearlLocket exactly. They don't know how slow I am so I don't tell them about the hours I work off the clock. Because if I did , they would either cut my schedule and hire another person altogether or fire me because I work too slow. They recently hired another waitress to help the other one out so that helps me a lot.
Chan Tak Zee wear gloves made for washing dishes. They are sold online. If you are a woman then use the old fashioned dish washing gloves that are at wall mart. If you are a man you might need to go to home depot to buy rubber gloves. When you go to work just wear rubber gloves and put latex gloves over those gloves. I used to use gloves but its easier for me to scrub and multi task with out the gloves on. If the dishes are too hot then I just pick them up with a rag or towel.but also I have 7 racks so I usual wash 4 racks before I start putting my first rack away. The dishes naturally cool off within a few minutes. Sometimes I don't care and I will just pick the dishes up while they are hot but just switch hands every few seconds.
stop working without getting paid dude, tell them if they want you there for more hours.. to pay you for those hours. the chef has nothing to do with your job, you're job is to do whatever you agreed to on the contract.. and I highly doubt the contract says you have to wipe the chefs ass and change his diaper when he starts crying.

rubber gloves are the worse thing ever. Just grab the hot dishes and eventually you won't feel the heat. Training new employees is really fun especially when they have that attitude that doing the dishpit is a easy job
I've worked in every area in a kitchen and I've learned to respect the dish pit because if it wasn't for dishwashers a restaurant would fall apart and the amount of shit dishwashers go through from touching nasty ass food getting your clothes soaking wet and standing for hours on end there should be more respect for the dish pit.
I first started as a dishwasher when I was 18 years old for a local restaurant. I kept that up till about half way through college. Then started up again after I graduated. So all in all, it adds up to just over 7 years experience. And I can tell you this: It is an important and difficult job. Don't let anyone tell you different. Unless of course it's for a huge institution that can afford to hire way more help than they actually need to make the job more attractive to students. To be brutally honest, this video does not describe real dishwashing. Oh college...
Call Me Swivel Hips today was my first day as a dishwasher and it was a very fast pace job. And I’m 18 enrolled in college too lol I just hope I do good in the future
I've done it all line cook prep and dishwasher which was the first position I had when I got into the restaurant biz and for me it wasn't difficult the dish machine I must say but the three compartment sink is what got me but once I got me a routine with it I got easier but I love shout out to all dishes much respect 💯
I've been a dish washer at 3 different places in my life and if you aren't BUSTINNNNNG ASS 80% of your shift that place of business just dosnt have "high" volume sales. They might say they do, but it's relative to that restaurant. I've worked at chilli's after a small kitchen. and even that now I consider slow.
I’m dishwashing at this restaurant basically in petco park and baseball nights get crazy but it gets insane when the restaurant owner has an event hall across the street and hosting events and catering to 200-1000 people depending if it’s a wedding , convention , etc and at first it was overwhelming Bc I just got out the army and my mind was not prepared to transition to something like this .I hated it at first and now it’s not so bad , Bc I’m getting my routine going at a smooth pace coming up with new ways of getting the task at hand done and eventually picking up the slack of others and going about it with a new attitude. .
I think he means because that kitchen is extremely well equipped. Washing dishes there would be a cake walk. Not only does it have a conveyor so you can pile in the dishes and put them away all at once, but it's huge, the whole kitchen where I work is barely bigger than that dish washing area.
I'm 15 and i'm a dishwasher for almost 6 months! Its my first job, i recommend to teenagers for a first job in summer, its definitely worth it, i work for 12 hours a week, so i make like 150 $ per week
Learn where all the dishes go in the kitchen an around the restaurant, keep everything organized, all items in their own correct stacks, you will have more space. Always have your hands full, take clean stuff out on your way out, and bring dirty stuff in when you come back. Wait until you have a stack of plates before putting them away, the less trips you make, the more time you have. When putting dishes in the rack, try to hold as many as comfortable in your hands and if you squeeze one side of the sack, or lean it over, you can drop them into the rack all at once if you line it up right.
I was dishwasher at two restaurants at the same time for about 3 months and a half... One of the best experiences ever. Do not get me wrong, tho job is shitty, but it is so satisfying at the same time and it toughens you up. Would recommend it to anyone with no job experience. You get to learn a lot about work enviromments in no time and that is always benefitial for you. And yeah... you can tell the instructor in the video is merely an instructor. He is slow as fuck!
Update, it wasn't bad but it wasn't easy either, went to work at 3 and got out early at 9:30, took one 10min break on 5:04pm which i regret, my feets are burning, planning on packing lunch to work and definitely bring a water bottle, i was so dehydrated,
Cried at work yesterday, being a only dishwasher in the restaurant is difficult for me, i was so frustrated at myself for letting dishes pile up. Ended up crying when the restaurant was about to close. I tried to hold it in until everyone left, the cashier saw me about to cry, but she left so she can give me privacy. Im embarrassed of it honestly, I'm just hoping no one brings it up bc my company loves drama. But to look on the bright side this can be a learning lesson for me, I can look back and see what I done wrong, and try new techniques to clean and dry dishes faster. I'm very grateful that I experienced this situation even though it's embarrassing. As a dishwasher i definitely need to expect the unexpected.
*My place uses the sanitizer deep sink for wood pizza boards and steak boards and after I scrub the pans I run them through the machine. I do everything else pretty much the same way as this guy. Except I’m efficient AF! That’s why I asked for more money when I started, although, dishwashing does not pay nearly enough for the excellent service that is applied by the worker. Sadly, for this reason I will most likely leave the restaurant for warehousing again. If the pay and benefits where actually realistic I would actually just dishwash. It’s rough but I think I like it better than warehousing.*
I have a job interview in the morning for a dishwasher and im scared. im 23 if i get hired this weill be my first paid job. im scared cause i would think you need to work fast at this restaurant and i cant work fast im having a panic attack not fun
I'm a dishwasher too. Working there at the only local restaurant within the mall in my hometown. Its been over a year and I like it or hate it depending on how each shift turns out to be like. I prefer the slower days
I work in a nursing home washing dishes is part of my job you gotta be fast. I have to be done washing dishes by 11:00 so i can do my other duties Sometimes if the dishwasher breaks down we gotta wash dishes by hand.
to be honest being a dishwasher in a restaurant is depressing. well at least the one i worked in because they had you washing all the cups, hundreds of silverware, ramekins, plates, pots, trays and pans, refill the line with a ton of plates when the chefs run out and take a tub full of dirty ones back to wash and then they had you cut 3 boxes of potatoes everyday and they were the mini ones, each box had six bags and in each bag was like at least 50 to 100 potatoes and every two hours clean the machine which wasnt to bad but it sucked when you have a shit load of work on busy days and before you leave they had you wash and sweep your work area, then sweep and mop the freezer and take out all the trash and then punch out. i didnt mind the hard work i enjoyed it actually but what brought me down was everyday the bussers just bringing in all the dirty shit to you while they have a nice chat and laugh with everyone while your there all alone going back and forth busting your ass to keep up with all the work and it paid 10 an hour for all that labor lol. but you know what i work in a hotel now as a dishwasher and its awesome cause you work as a team with many different people and get to actually talk and not bust your ass as much as you would usually do by yourself in a restaraunt and way better pay as well. so my advice if you tryna be a dishwasher best be one at a hotel (;
I work in a smaller kitchen so I can have a nice chat with the cooks when it is slow, when it is busy we are not chatting, we are just talking to each other to let each other know what's up
why did i relate so much to this. it seems as if no one notices you. the other day i had to run outside and get all the dirty dishes that the bussers are too lazy to bring into the kitchen, and one of my co workers randomly said to me that i was doing a good job i guess cus she saw i was freaking out bc there was a shit load of dishes. lmao and just from that little bit of recognition i was ab to cry ngl
As a Dishwasher I too have very Similar Duties. Same with the Next Person. I too use the Prong Racks for Plates. And the flat Racks for Silverwares & Ramikins. For the Hard stuck on stuffs. I think everyone should at least do dishwashing once in their life. It’s humble experience and open up your eyes. Sometimes you even move up to prep cook. Used to do this when I was 18
My only thought with this video is spraying down the dishes. Usually I find myself quickly tackling a plate individually that has dried sauce on it that sometimes doesn't come off completely. Otherwise, I am with you.
It is different from place to place. However, you will be able to do well after several shifts, assuming you are working with another dishwasher. After a month, you will be faster and better overall at the job.
I'm 18 and I work a similar position but only in a grocery store. Now I'm at a position where idk if I should keep my job or go to college and find myself a better job. The thing that'll suck though is that I'm gonna miss the people over there if I do tend to quit but idk, do u have any advice for me?
I would work there and attend college honestly. I did it completely backwards. I went to college for 2 years and got my Associates degree in Network Systems Administration. But I didn't work at all during college, I focused on my grades. I graduated in June of this year but haven't had any luck finding a job in my field. So I took the dishwashing job at the end of October. So my advice for you is, try to keep the job you have now and go to college as we;;. If you're working a lot of hours there, just ask them if you can get your schedule built around your college schedule. Or if you don't like your job, find another job. I'm sure your employer will work with you
I'm gonna be honest, I haven't been there for more than a month and I want to switch to retail. Any tips on how to get the dishes done faster, Matt? I'm really slow at it and get backed up easily.
Can't really answer that because I don't know what kind of dishes you have and the variety of different dishes. The best thing you can do is ask someone who's been a dishwasher there for a while. They will be able to give you tips and all that.
this was my first job, i thought looking at this video would kinda give me an idea of how it is. ITS ASS i worked on the super bowl. non stop on your feet fast paced work. it wasnt hard but over whelming as fuck. its a good job to have as a teen
a restaurant is a little easier than fast food, fast food is non stop during lunch and around 2-6pm when ppl are starting to get off from work and school. this video made it look pretty easy, but obviously not all the dirty dishes will be that clean before they are even washed.
Thank you for the ever so informative video. My question is, do dishwashers generally use gloves? I'm going to start as a bar helper tomorrow, so I was curious whether I'd have the time to put them on and off in between tasks.
did it for two years when I was young !! believe me it's not that easy because you are also the kitchen slave !! I ended up a bartender and that was alot better and the money was great !! ended up in the Airforce when I was 23 spent 20 years after I retired went back to bartending for 5 years but now work for a generator manufacturing company !! but never will wash dishes again that was a rough job !! I'll let the youngsters have that one
I detest it when you apply for a position other than dishwashing (that's entry level like bussing or hosting) and then the employer calls you in for an interview, just to lecture you about how you're not qualified enough. Then they try to have you as a dishwasher. One was even like 'you have over a year of experience as one, so you really like being one. Please become one'. I even asked if there were any advancement opportunities, and they then said no. This is why I walked out and applied somewhere as a host, and got hired.
I work in a kitchen with very little space, and a lot of work. And when it's clean, there isn't a lot of space to put it, so I have to spend a lot of time storing the clean stuff, delaying the dishwashing and then repeat. Then I also get called for other things (such as pouring soup) and it has been the most stressful evening of my life. Everything is stored in different places throughout the restaurant and it's one logistical mess.
I've worked as a dishwasher in two restaurants. All I can say I'd that you have to get your roll going and you have to learn to handle quick pace work for extraneous hours.
Without a dishwasher, the whole restaurant falls to shit.
right on !!
+Nick Hillman (Poseidon) A big thank you for this lovely comment. I feel better already.
Thank you for true words of wisdom
I start my new job as a dishwasher tomorrow so thanks for the tip
I have worked a couple of weeks now, how was your experience?
I'm a dishwasher at a busy bar in Canada and I've been a dishwasher for 2-3 years and I'm 18. I make good money and I'm really quick. You learn how to be fast and it's better than cooking. I used to be terrible when I started at this bar 6 months ago but I learned to be fast and now I do everything in the back of house from cooking to prepping food to washing dishes. I'm so proud of myself.

Perfect job for someone that doesn't mind the work and likes being left alone.
Jennifer Sunshine I like working alone too , which is why janitors > dishwashers
Anyhow, best of luck to all of the dishwashers out there!
a lot easier.*
you used a sink lmfao i had to doubel stack plates
Yeah right, I got sick of it washing dishes and moved to panty work.
Hello dear
How are you doing?
Shout out to all the dishwashers out there, I swear where the most that does everything but gets no attention ...
Natalia Nichole Good for you.

you guys really should get paid more. i work as a short order cook and we all take turns washing everything. couldn't tell you how many cuts I've had all over my hands. I really respect you guys for your work! Cause, hello, without them, we wouldn't have dishes to plate any food ;) Great job, dishwashers!!
you all are always so damn slow. no wonder u get minimum wage
Squid Girl Yet you're the one sitting behind a computer looking up dishwashing videos on your free time, right ....
I started dish washing not so long ago and I believe the toughest part about it is learning where everything goes. And also, you need to keep a quick pace while working so the dishes won't stack up all over the place.
Patricia can I smoke a blunt while dishwashing?
I don't think so lol
Patricia ok lol
Patricia haha same here luckily the chefs would help me out and tell me we’re the dishes go tho
Hardest thing for me was the pots lol the dishes were the easiest for me. I’m glad they took me out of the dishwasher
I been dishwasher for a year it's so easy to me I smoke me a blunt in the morning then go to work high washing dishes it helps pass the day
Your right about the YT video preparations.
The dishwasher is one of the most important jobs in the kitchen.
Vision Double I say it goes- chefs/line cooks, dishwasher, servers, hosts
Hammi nah I was referring to the entire restaurant. .. each position is important
If any of the jobs are stopped the entire line will stop.
Then why they are low paid?
Veikko Kurvinen it requires less skill
Main thing in dishwashing is moving as fast as possible an keeping the chain moving.
yes you said right!
I'm usually by myself so I try to maintain a Steady pace. You can wear yourself down moving "Too" Fast, especially working 10 hour shifts.
And knowing your things. Can't just act irrational
Dishwashing was my first job and after realizing how boring being a cashier is I'm more than happy to come back to this.

+Margie Marcum wow really

Tell me people who work as a dishwasher, do you need to shave as to the beard ?
That's funny as hell.Your a good one because I would leave those Dam Dishes.or demand more money.People are tired of the company get over. These company think your REBOTE SLAVE . Tell them to kiss your ass.or buy a new dish washing machine.

Me too.. it is really hard work..
the key to this job is to literally do more work than anyone else in the restaurant. and starve for raises, and be able to tolerate a shit load of stress and emotional abuse. oh, and spray off dishes. and pick up after everyone else's laziness.
I find when you can box and the chef's know you can box you get zero emotional abuse lol

What always gets me through my dish shifts are keeping a clear mind set it’ll always get you through!!
keeping a clean housed down sink. clears the mind

Fr what a bitch and they come to dish pit and throw the shit like they spect us to clean up after their own shit
John Varney 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
"And remember, if you work as slow as I do in this video, you'll be fired before lunch"
Obviously when you're training folks, you have to move slower.
If you don't move as fast as service demands, you're barely training at all. Training is a 15 minute course in where shit goes.
Zeke Mystique You have to move a little bit slower when you're training someone with no previous experience, which is the purpose of this video. But you're right about it only taking 15 mins to an hour
@@Appleboy78165 that's make sense

To all dishwashers it gets better learn everything then you can train to become a chef.
I'll be a super fast dishwasher if they let me break 10 plates every 100.
lmao
jokes on you. ive worked for couple of weeks and i think i broke 1. these fuckers are pretty tough. once you realise this and know how far you can push them you can increse your speed by a lot. for me thats what limited me a lot. the fear of breaking plates.
hahah
Hahahah
Loving my job so far
my dad was a dishwasher, both my brothers was a dishwasher,my brother in law is dishwasher and my husband is a dishwasher/kitchen steward (dont ask) now these people are higher up in the kitchen so dishwashers dont give up and keep ya head up
wow
What a smart family
Yea same my dad cane as an immigrant and applied at steakhouse restaurant, he was a dishwasher and he use to say he use come out at 1 am mostly everyday and he said it was hell. 8 months later they finally moved him and fork their he was going to be kitchen manger but he had a big accident unfortunately
Wowsers!!!!!
That is me right now. We have a dishwasher where we have to scrub the food off first before putting it in there, then we take it out and hand dry them
You need a good dishwasher technician - The machine when properly setup, will do 80-90% of the cleaning.
By drying the dishes manually after the wash cycle, you are ‘undoing ‘ the purpose of the dish machine, which is to sanitize wares..
Exact same thing here man
Same.

+Dab God how do you like it so far
as a veteran potwasher, who years later lead a kitchen of chefs, potwash for many was the best place to be to get into the zone and be at peace. but to do this you had to get your head into the game of being focused, organized, and fast. each potwasher does the job differently, just like every place has a different setup, as well as the chefs and waiting team deal with it differently.
if you ever go into a potwash area on your first day, or any shift for that matter. focus on 3 things first, 1. what items are most important right there and then for the chefs or waiting team, possibly they need some plates, and cutlery. so dont use up the time by putting through the large containers.
2. organize the shitfest you walked into or during your shift, get all the plates, cutlery, containers etc ( differently places have different things), have them all organized so you know whats what and your able to gets more of a clear surface and less danger.
3. for a tip for the cutlery, spill it into the sink and get the cutlery rack and start organizing it with the tails down, this enables it to come out hopefully streak free and easy to polish. add the cutlery with a space with the dishes or on a flat tray with some cups etc. also dumping it like you did , will end up being a nightmare when you pull it out after its "cleaned" simply becuase it likely hasnt cleaned it, and then you have spend even more time organizing it and polishing it with water stains on it
extra tip. dont have the plates facing towards you, otherwise you will end up with yourself getting soaking wet and the floor soaked. within an hour you will be depressed. face it to your right so the water goes into the sink.
must be tough washing all those clean dishes...

I just got hired as a dishwasher. Watching this to prepare my mind. 🍽🧼🙂
If I went that slow I would of get fired lol if I take my time to wash all the plates are going to stack up and never going to finish
i start my dishwashing job on sunday done it before but never in a restraunt but the chef is starting me at 11.5 an hour and its nights from there i will go to line chef training pretty pumped

I've been washing dishes for almost 16 years still doing it I enjoy it it's not my life calling but it pays the bills..
+pipeslinga21 Any tips on handling steaming hot dishes fresh out of the dish washer ?
Worked as a dishwasher at PF Chang’s from late spring to early summer of 2014. By god it was hell!
East Side Mario's:
Keep dish washing area organized and tidy
Wear rubber gloves and slip-resistant footwear for more comfort
Setup the dish washing area and operate the dish washing machine
Maintain water temperature between 150 and 160 degrees Fahrenheit (66 to 71 degrees Celsius) and rinse at 180 degrees Fahrenheit (82 degrees Celsius)
Regularly clean the catch and garbage screens and make sure the wash arms are clear of debris
Setup the bus pans for soaking cutlery and resoaking baked on dishes
Thoroughly spray all dishes so that food and sauce has disappeared
Setup 2 hot sinks (1 for scrubbing, 1 for soaking) for pots and pans only
Clean sinks with squeegee and scouring pad after finishing with pots and pans
Breakdown boxes and place in recycling bin
Refill soft drinks when syrup runs out
Separate silverware including knives/forks/spoons
Place all inserts, cutting boards and sharp knives back where they belong
Clean bartender's equipment and bring back to the bar
Hose down countertops and remove with squeegee
Keep garbage containers empty and clean
Take dishes off shelves back to the dining area
Shut off power to dishwashing machine when all is done
Pickup all chemical jugs off the floor
Adhere to all health and safety policies
Train new employees
rubber gloves are the worse thing ever. Just grab the hot dishes and eventually you won't feel the heat. Training new employees is really fun especially when they have that attitude that doing the dishpit is a easy job
I've worked in every area in a kitchen and I've learned to respect the dish pit because if it wasn't for dishwashers a restaurant would fall apart and the amount of shit dishwashers go through from touching nasty ass food getting your clothes soaking wet and standing for hours on end there should be more respect for the dish pit.
working my first dish shift in 6 years tomorrow. Just helping the chef out. Hope it goes well and I pick it back up like I was doing it yesterday.
I first started as a dishwasher when I was 18 years old for a local restaurant. I kept that up till about half way through college. Then started up again after I graduated. So all in all, it adds up to just over 7 years experience. And I can tell you this:
It is an important and difficult job.

God I wish I had a conveyor belt machine... I have to open and close mine

I'm a dishwasher and it's fairly easy I get paid $13 an hour I. Work 40 hours a week and almost every single say I work alone
😉
***** where you from?
13 an hour? where the hell you work?
Wholefoods pays 12
I get paid $5.10 an hour
I'm 15 and i'm a dishwasher for almost 6 months! Its my first job, i recommend to teenagers for a first job in summer, its definitely worth it, i work for 12 hours a week, so i make like 150 $ per week
update?
Lol this is probably the most lit dishwashing video out there
Thank you for making this. Doing my first temp job as a dishwasher. Very helpful
First day of being a dishwasher, im so nervous, this video calmed my nerves, wish me luck💀✌
@@plasmablue3515 don’t cry it’s ok I know being a dishwasher is hard but don’t work yourself to hard just work smarter

Thank you for this video, and also thank you to all the people who comment their experiences. I'm going to start as a dishwasher in a few days!
I'm 16 years old and I just got my first job as a dishwasher at Dennys so excited to start first day was fun.
are you still working there ??
Jake Jacob No, I quit in December of that year.
AwesomeIvory oh okay . Hope your new jobs working for ya =)

I totally agree
I work in a nursing home washing dishes is part of my job you gotta be fast.
I have to be done washing dishes by 11:00 so i can do my other duties
Sometimes if the dishwasher breaks down we gotta wash dishes by hand.
The unsung heroes of the kitchen
to be honest being a dishwasher in a restaurant is depressing. well at least the one i worked in because they had you washing all the cups, hundreds of silverware, ramekins, plates, pots, trays and pans, refill the line with a ton of plates when the chefs run out and take a tub full of dirty ones back to wash and then they had you cut 3 boxes of potatoes everyday and they were the mini ones, each box had six bags and in each bag was like at least 50 to 100 potatoes and every two hours clean the machine which wasnt to bad but it sucked when you have a shit load of work on busy days and before you leave they had you wash and sweep your work area, then sweep and mop the freezer and take out all the trash and then punch out. i didnt mind the hard work i enjoyed it actually but what brought me down was everyday the bussers just bringing in all the dirty shit to you while they have a nice chat and laugh with everyone while your there all alone going back and forth busting your ass to keep up with all the work and it paid 10 an hour for all that labor lol. but you know what i work in a hotel now as a dishwasher and its awesome cause you work as a team with many different people and get to actually talk and not bust your ass as much as you would usually do by yourself in a restaraunt and way better pay as well. so my advice if you tryna be a dishwasher best be one at a hotel (;
Yeah same happen to me and I finally decide to leave it
I work in a smaller kitchen so I can have a nice chat with the cooks when it is slow, when it is busy we are not chatting, we are just talking to each other to let each other know what's up
how does dishwashing work at a hotel? is it much different to a smaller scale place or the only difference is more dishwashers?
why did i relate so much to this. it seems as if no one notices you. the other day i had to run outside and get all the dirty dishes that the bussers are too lazy to bring into the kitchen, and one of my co workers randomly said to me that i was doing a good job i guess cus she saw i was freaking out bc there was a shit load of dishes. lmao and just from that little bit of recognition i was ab to cry ngl
As a Dishwasher I too have very Similar Duties. Same with the Next Person. I too use the Prong Racks for Plates. And the flat Racks for Silverwares & Ramikins. For the Hard stuck on stuffs. I just put it into the Machine. And have the hot water Loosen them. Then i Rewash them once their soften. Scrub them out. Than put back in machine for 2nd Time. Afterwards. they come out Spotless. Rather than Scrub while their hard. Afterwards. I put away Everything. To make my counter Clean for the next person.
Making a rack as full as possible is slower in some cases. Keep speed in mind! It can be important sometimes.
I think everyone should at least do dishwashing once in their life. It’s humble experience and open up your eyes. Sometimes you even move up to prep cook. Used to do this when I was 18
6:10 my heart aches seeing that tap run while he's not even washing his hands
Is that the most offensive thing you could find in the video?

My only thought with this video is spraying down the dishes. Usually I find myself quickly tackling a plate individually that has dried sauce on it that sometimes doesn't come off completely. Otherwise, I am with you.
Well, Iv never done this job before but i will begin tomorrow. I feel it is fun. But it seems the machines are so different for any place?
It is different from place to place. However, you will be able to do well after several shifts, assuming you are working with another dishwasher. After a month, you will be faster and better overall at the job.
I'm about to be full dish washer next week for the time, and our machine has the lift doors.

I like the dishwasher position for work. I'm hoping to find a higher wage.
Good luck bro I'm still waiting on mines as well.
Been working 7 weeks now as a dishwasher. Only making minimum wage, same for everyone else?
Matt B I been working over a month making 9.50 an hour. With free food from the chef and coffee. Its hard work but its rewarding.
This work place does look like heaven on earth
this was my first job, i thought looking at this video would kinda give me an idea of how it is.
Using gloves is optional, but then you have to take them off and on now and then, just depends on the time and how fast u can go
This Isn't The Reality
I wish my first dishwashing set up at a restaurant was this fancy haha.
Who would have thought that an instructional video from a culinary institute would provoke so many racist and classist comments?
did it for two years when I was young !! believe me it's not that easy because you are also the kitchen slave !!
Thank you so much I have a trail run tomorrow for a job as a dishwasher 😁 this helped me thank you
I work in a kitchen with very little space, and a lot of work.
There should be an INTERNATIONAL POT WASH (DISHWASHER) DAY. Extremely undervalued members of the kitchen and eatery.
I clean the dishes of a family of 7 everyday since I was 8, this seems pretty easy
I've worked as a dishwasher in two restaurants. All I can say I'd that you have to get your roll going and you have to learn to handle quick pace work for extraneous hours.
