  • This is a classic Charlie Christian tune done at high speed and the great players here seem to be trying to outdo each other. It is a good thing Danny went last as he is on fire and even does his beer bottle slide at this pace! This song is on his "Portraits" CD but live video clips of it are rare. Enjoy and marvel at his talent

this video confirms the two most important points I have ever made about danny gatton and they are, 1 the absolute best live player on the guitar ever period and 2 and more importantly when challenged on stage (think that sax solo he just witnessed) it was game on and time to light the Molotov cocktails on whoever dared to challenge his greatness!! the first diminished line with a walking bass line right after that solo at 8:35 was a backup junior moment!! absolute genius!! staggering really!!

I saw him once at Buddy Guys in Chicago. My wife even scored a pick from him. My first encounter with a heavy gauge, and now that’s all I like. As for talent, it’s nor always clear in vids, but in person you can plainly see he uses all eight fingers on his left hand.

It pisses me off when a true artist like Danny goes unknown and twits on the Voice and other reality shows get rich-one exception Harry Connick Jr...The music industry don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

Every time I find a video where I think I have seen Danny as his best, I find another like this that just makes me blow my mind! What am amazing Guitarist. The whole band like someone else said was great, but Danny threw it out of the park and did a home run! WOW, Amazing!

This concert was in my hometown. When Danny showed up in his white van I asked what guitar he was going to use. He reached over to the passenger side grabbed the Tele he is using in the video and handed it out the window to me. Wow !! We talked for a few minutes took some photos and then he went to the stage. Great day for me. He was a very nice person. The credits read Bridgeton, PA. but is actually Bridgeton , NJ.

Around '94 a friend was looking over my music collection and asked me what kind of music I was currently looking for. I said "I'm a guitar guy. Blues, rock, jazz, bluegrass... something upbeat and exciting. Technical excellence. Virtuosity. Originality. That "certain something". Not the mind-numbing junk pushed at me every day from every direction.
One of his suggestions was that I get the Arlen Roth CD Toolin' Around and I might even like the guy he's got playing with him - Danny Gatton - he's fantastic too.
By the time I had Toolin' Around and Gatton's Cruisin' Deuces and realized what I had been missing, it was too late. I was never to see Gatton play live.
I wonder sometimes, if I had a chance to go back in my life and see one performance, what would it be? I've seen a few shows, so it has to be a band or an artist that I really liked, but never saw perform live. The Beatles? Maybe, but more from my time, Led Zeppelin touring Physical Graffiti would be my first choice, if it wasn't for Gatton.
So, I get what precious little of Danny I can here and there, and am grateful to those who post the wonderful videos of performances that I never got to see. Hats off to you.
It's nice to see so many people remembering and celebrating Danny, and especially the recognition of his great talent and amazing virtuosity.
The greatest unknown guitarist, is what he was called years back, wasn't it? "Danny who?", most people said. A bloody shame, I thought. He would have killed at the Montreal Jazzfest, with me among the thousands of "victims", but I digress.
That was before computers, the web and social media were things. It's better now. I actually met a few young people recently who knew Gatton's music. He may become "famous" yet!
Anyway, it always saddens me that he didn't decide to stick around a little longer to try and work things out. I'll bet he would have eventually found a good life worth living, with all the success that he wanted. And he could have kept playing, and the world would have been a better place.

I saw Danny and his band about a year or two after this, and as noted, they were on *fire*!! I remember Holloman coming out wearing a red sequined jacket and blowin' that horn like I've never heard before or since! And he had put on a bit of weight from what you see here. I remember thinking "Damn, I didn't know John Candy could play the sax!"
    We miss ya, Danny!!

I had the extreme privilege of playing guitar in one of John Previti's other bands on two occasions. I was in awe of his jazz mastery on the instrument. I guess it was part of my initiation, but John would copy, note for note, some of the most intricate lines I knew, immediately after I played them. It was both humbling and inspiring.

Awesome! The same classic dream team band Danny had on his 1994 Austin City Limits appearance: Bill Holliman - trumpet, sax & piano - Shannon Ford - drums, John Prevetti - bass. On Danny's left is Billy Windsor - vocals & rhythm guitar (not on this song) - Also in attendance is Jay Monterose on site guitar & amp tech! - Also - this was in Bridgeton, New Jersey NOT PA.

    • @lawrencegenereux8567
