You know it is trite when people say who the greatest guitarists of all time are considering there are hundreds of thousands of great players in the world, BUT if you were to name one then Danny Gatton would be in the top 5 pickers of all time. GENIUS.
This clip shows us again how unbelievable talented Danny was. It looks so easy....and he is always in control of what he's playing. I believe that everything that came up in his mind he could directly translate it on his guitar The way he improvises.......it's amazing!
I consider myself a pretty advanced guitarist in multiple genres of music, but Danny is simply a bridge too far!!! His hands were touched by the hands of God.
Danny is playing with the thought on his mind, 'I know no one is really listening to what I'm playing or understands the feel and technique of what I'm doing, but one day they will realise, one day they will understand'.
Danny Gatton was fantastic. I don't care to say who was the greatest, he was a stellar player all the way. I adore to hear him playing and that's all that matters to me.
Yes watch Danny closely he is a very technical player and what he does cannot be duplicated by anybody then or today his playing is very difficult he was a total master of many styles the best ever
I was there! Great set with lousy guest appearance. Yeah, I was a bit surprised then Barry threw us the bird. It took the Post almost a week to report it 😂
Great playing as always from Danny. What is with the plethora of sketchy looking characters milling around the stage, talk about a freak show, and of course when Mayor Barry comes out...
That's right GeorgiaBoy1961, he is a Gatton deciple of mine as are many others LOL. BUT he knows what he is talking about. I know who his favorite is, and this man really knows great guitar players like VERY FEW others !!!
everyone talks about jimmy hendrix, van halen, etc. yea, they are great, but he's better because he is master at multiple styles of the guitar. he also was just as great at other stringed instruments. i can appreciate his playing bc i play guitar. and yea, who the heck are those ppl who came on stage, and whats with his sign language while danny is playing.
People don't realize that Roy Buchanan was doing shit on his guitar that Hendrix didn't even come close to AND was doing it 12 years before Hendrix was even "discovered"! Roy and Danny roomed together and jammed here and there. Wouldn't you like to have been a fly on the wall while the 2 of them were talking shop?!!
Rainbowrider JT no doubt. it is true they are the best unknown guitarist on the planet. although Gatton does have following these days and very much deserved. he still is the best unknown guitarist in the world in my opinion and many others. one reason I say this is he mastered so many different styles of guitar not just one. I especially love is Rockabilly Style which is very entertaining. however it doesn't matter which to he plays it's genius
Luther Beckett yeah you got that right f***** up outside City events. however the Silver Lining was it is one of the best clear videos of Danny Gatton so there was some good that came out of it. as opposed do that f***** up mayor crackhead piece of s*** mayor Barry
Yeah, I totally agree! They're finally making a documentary of him and giving him the recognition he deserves! I think they're calling it "Mr. Humble" Ive seen previews of it. It looks good! Have you seen or heard of what I'm talking about?
1512735, re: "Gatton was Roy Buchannon's#1 fan,Roy was the best ,Danny was always chaseing him..." That's not what I heard. Danny started off as one of Roy's disciples, but before long Danny blew by him. When DG was at his peak, Roy couldn't hang with him - not even close. Johnny Hiland does not yet have the track record that Danny did, but give him time... he is the real deal... and don't forget that he sings, too...
Still my favorite guitar player for the last 10 years no one comes close although tommy Emanuel might along with Rory Gallagher Gary Moore Alan holdsworth Shawn lane Wes Montgomery Scotty Anderson and Alvin lee but Danny is king!
i have seen SRV,gatemouth brown,albert collins,roy buchanan,buddy guy,carlos santana,billy gibbons,johnny winter,lonnie brooks,etc... none of them can touch this...
Final note here along with Danny check out junior brown from Texas he gave srv lessons once upon a time junior has been around since the 50’s he is in my opinion the best player today that’s unknown
hi john ... got to see Danny Gatton performing live in front sau? I am Brazilian and a big fan of this guy ... so I have little information to danny ...
It's at 7:14 (like a 'lude, dude!) hizzonner lets everybody know exactly what he thinks of his, uh, "constituents". Yes, his "peeps", his "Ward members", his "supporters". Marion, you rock anyway. You da' man and you always will be.
best tele player ever!!!!!! Albert Lee close but not as much personality, Brent Mason close, but to commercial and I say that tipping my hat to Albert and Brent as being todays foremost tele throw-down jammers1 Hats off to Gatton!!!!
These guys are truely genius, they are the cream of the pot studio country finger picking masters. But Johnny Hiland is my favorite,he plays it all.He rocks with Sammy Hagar, then has been the #1 first chair in Nashville studios for the past 10 years.I'm from PG county and Gatton you just had to see, technical,he is in a world of his own.If you lived in the dc area, you would know,Gatton was Roy Buchannon's#1 fan,Roy was the best ,Danny was always chaseing him, like Principato was chasing Gatton.
He's fast. His instructional videos will reveal a lot. For example, (not mine) - ua-cam.com/video/4fBrcjMub_E/v-deo.html at 5: 15 until the end. Items of his standard "toolbox" of techniques are slowed down, explained and revealed. Just like magician's tricks. You'll be amazed. You'll recognize them. Fascinating.
Yeah, the crowd gave a nice round of applause at the end, but during the course of playing, so many people appear to be completely disinterested without recognizing the greatness that surrounds them. Seems very odd and kind of eerie. Nowadays, you'll standing ovations for crap performances.
I hate the sound of a telecaster, but that man sure could play circles around me. With him and Roy both supposedly killing themselves, i am convinced was the ear piercing tele qualities that maybe messed up their minds. But what a master guitar player he was!!!!
@foggy4180 Really, it is amazing. He's got these big meaty hands and not-longish chubby fingers. He has this unique technique. His fret hand seems to glide around quickly, so smoothly and effortlessly, the fingers unobtrusively vibrating and twitching a bit, while he picks, plucks, wipes - whatever, but it sounds like, (but does not look like), madly - with the other hand. As you quite rightly have said, it seems that Danny got to know his instruments, the styles, all the chords, progressions, changes, moves, tricks, and his music, better than his dick, if you'll pardon the expression. Ok. Almost better. Let's just say, intimately. I suppose that given his obvious talent and love of playing, after a while he could play just about anything that popped into his head, any way, without skipping a beat.
His hands were definitely not what you would expect on a guitarist. Short stubby little fingers. As I was getting offstage after playing a tune with him he shook my hand...I paused with his hand still in mine and asked how the hellvhe could play guitar with such hands? He smiled back at me and said..."I just kicked your ass didn't i"? Cool guy
@sonoffrettkillr: You do mean "best country tele player ever," right? There's no best of anything... as Danny himself used to say, there's a lot of leaves at the top of a tree. Albert Lee has his thing, Brent Mason his, Reggie Young his, Vince Gill his unqiue style, Brad Paisley, too, etc. we could debate this for hours.... we have not even gotten into the older cats and their playing, such as Don Rich, Jimmy Bryant, Phil Baugh, Thumbs Carlisle, etc. - or Tele players in other styles of music.
All the idiots hanging around in this show and one genius. Van Gogh hardly sold a painting in his lifetime. At least Danny did better than that. I never heard anyone better.
You know it is trite when people say who the greatest guitarists of all time are considering there are hundreds of thousands of great players in the world, BUT if you were to name one then Danny Gatton would be in the top 5 pickers of all time. GENIUS.
such a shame that he didn`t get the right appreciation. But he still leaves us guitar players all over the world in awe....
In my book, anyone who says they know guitar but don't know Gatton is suspect.
This clip shows us again how unbelievable talented Danny was.
It looks so easy....and he is always in control of what he's playing.
I believe that everything that came up in his mind he could directly translate it on his guitar
The way he improvises.......it's amazing!
Jaw-dropping awesomeness. Nothing less. Total control. Mastery of crucial playing styles. Never being a show-off. For the music. For himself.
Watch him closely. There's a lot of guys out there that "Think" they can do what Gatton did. He can't be beat at his own game.
My friend said they heckled the Mayor heavily for cutting Danny Gatton's set short, so the Mayor gave them the finger. Lmao
Some of the best quality footage of ever seen of DANNY
THANKS!!!!!!!!
Yes watch Danny closely he is a very technical player and what he does cannot be duplicated by anybody then or today his playing is very difficult he was a total master of many styles the best ever
As an old fart whose still does a few gigs now and then, I can't imagine having had to follow Danny on stage... incredible!
I'm about 5 rows back from the stage, and just off the camera...The crowd was razzing Barry, and he was None too happy!
I was there! Great set with lousy guest appearance. Yeah, I was a bit surprised then Barry threw us the bird. It took the Post almost a week to report it 😂
well, we all know what a piece of shit that arsehole was. & a thief.
Is that the Snoopeys theme song ?
Anyway so cool someone filmed Danny Gatton playing his turmeric colored geetar in '89.
Danny was like "who the fuck are these people and what the hell are they doing on MY stage?!?"
All the people milling around in the background have no clue as to the virtuosity and rarity of talent being expressed by Danny on that guitar!
never thought id be glad to hear mustang sally again
Great playing as always from Danny. What is with the plethora of sketchy looking characters milling around the stage, talk about a freak show, and of course when Mayor Barry comes out...
Transitional mode it appears...
quintessential dc haha
Fantastic video!
I am glad someone was aware and brought a camcorder.
Did you record this yourself?
If so do you have more of this concert:)
That's right GeorgiaBoy1961, he is a Gatton deciple of mine as are many others LOL.
BUT he knows what he is talking about. I know who his favorite is, and this man really knows great guitar players like VERY FEW others !!!
Now Im convinced Danny Gatton is the best guitar player theres ever been
thats cuz you havent heard of Ace frehley
TheInboil
Course I have. Ace kicks ass too
I say kroseks julips blilkreks
i agree
rafasounds2010 Slash is better
everyone talks about jimmy hendrix, van halen, etc. yea, they are great, but he's better because he is master at multiple styles of the guitar. he also was just as great at other stringed instruments. i can appreciate his playing bc i play guitar. and yea, who the heck are those ppl who came on stage, and whats with his sign language while danny is playing.
+Christopher Englert Marion Barry, DC's crack smoking mayor!

He had so much music in him I think sometimes he did not know it.
Danny Gatton=The best player. Died October 4, 1994. RIP
Astounding playing from one of the masters of the guitar. perhaps only Tommy Emmanuel is comparable today.
Tommy is good but Stanley Jordan and Jeff Beck I think are more in Dannys league!
i have seen SRV,gatemouth brown,albert collins,roy buchanan,buddy guy,carlos santana,billy gibbons,johnny winter,lonnie brooks,etc... none of them can touch this...
Are there any more clips from this show?
This man could make you burn through sixteen sets of tires of a good muscle car with an open highway with that lightning pickin.
Gotta love the late 80s bros in the background
Wow OMG 😂
Danny's tone sounds like he's playing through a telephone.
Final note here along with Danny check out junior brown from Texas he gave srv lessons once upon a time junior has been around since the 50’s he is in my opinion the best player today that’s unknown
Btw the mayor gives a Quick Bird at 7:13
holy friggin shit best you tube video of all time
That's the same guy I posted about a few weeks ago, right?
hi john ... got to see Danny Gatton performing live in front sau? I am Brazilian and a big fan of this guy ... so I have little information to danny ...
Danny saw the play? I am a big fan of it ... but in Brazil we have little information from him ...
This poor street concert is more value than 20 years career of Coldplay in great stadiums....... Sad but true!
The pros who knew him (all of them !) called Danny " The Humbler "...nuff said.
It's at 7:14 (like a 'lude, dude!) hizzonner lets everybody know exactly what he thinks of his, uh, "constituents". Yes, his "peeps", his "Ward members", his "supporters". Marion, you rock anyway. You da' man and you always will be.
And thus every guitarist's LUNCH was eaten by Mr. Danny Gatton!
The reaction at 4:58
Danny Gatton & Chet Atkins are the G.O.A.T !
best tele player ever!!!!!! Albert Lee close but not as much personality, Brent Mason close, but to commercial and I say that tipping my hat to Albert and Brent as being todays foremost tele throw-down jammers1 Hats off to Gatton!!!!
Clash of two legendary DC Titans😆 Who upstaged who on that day🤔
Marion Barry - The definition of 'Impulse Control'

At 7:11 they focused in on some fool, then zoomed out and ruined the video.
He was giving the signal for more rock.
A true guitar player, not like those new youtube guys.
He was playing his ass off. Then it looked like pimp city.
like the peanuts rendition It rolls on baby! I'd like to see James Burton trade some licks with Danny also he was good friend of ol Roy Buchanan.
@tremontirocks He flips the bird @ 7:14
Watching his hands. Still don't understand what I'm looking for.
He's fast. His instructional videos will reveal a lot.
For example, (not mine) - ua-cam.com/video/4fBrcjMub_E/v-deo.html

Danny wouldn't give up the stage to the Mayor and the mayor was there to score some you know what. LOL
Did he write the themesong for Charlie Brown or play it on the piano, or both.? Or was it , " He's a clown, that Charlie Brown" ?? Oh ok, nevermind. 🤣
So cool!

@1512735 I respect everyones opinion but Gatton is much better than Roy, and Hillland; for that matter so is Lenny Breau, and Scotty Anderson.
Stereotype roadys.
