    This happened to me last week. I was worried about having to diagnose the problem for about a week until I tried a different pump at that same gas station. Filled my tank up without any problem. Stations have faulty equipment too.

    If you are always filling up to automatic pump cut-off, a flooded charcoal canister would be my first guess. Simple fix: don't fill past ~90% full for a while.

    Chrysler has an issue with the roll over check valves sticking open. Jeeps has a huge problem with this. They recommend replacing the tank because the check valve is "part of" the tank. I have been able to repair them without doing the tank. Saves people money!

    This is a very common problem with Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep vehicles. It is pretty easy to find forums of Jeep owners that have this issue. Replacing all these parts won't necessarily fix the issue, as many jeep owners report. It's likely a manufacturer/design issue for that era of vehicles

      Jeep wranglers, some of the smaller jeeps (I can't remember their names), but never the cherokees.
      The aspen, and some larger suvs, but not the pickups.
      The Durangos are the worst. They spit out the most fuel, and are the hardest to avoid besides filling up completely.

    I have this exact same problem on my 2008 Chrysler Town and County. It spews even more than in this video and slowing the rate of fill can get me past it, but it will literally take me 15 minutes to fill the 20 gallon tank! Not only is this time consuming, but I cannot use the lowest lock setting on the gas nozzle handle, so I have to baby it and tend to it the whole time it is being filled. This issue came up suddenly and happens about 90% of the time now. Also just a few weeks ago my check engine light came on and the code was P 0456 (ECM detects a very small leak in the evaporative system). I haven't gotten under the vehicle to diagnose, yet, but this video is a great start for what is probably going to be a lengthy process. Thanks for the tips. Very much appreciated.

    A lot of these newer style pumps are known to have issues.
    I have a diesel that has no evap system, no vents, literally like pouring into an open tank. Diesel pumps usually won't shut off until it's flowing out the spout.
    I used to own a '66 Ford Galaxie with the same style tank, the gas pumps did the same thing.
    Didn't matter if it was held wide open, or going as slow as could be.

    had a very similar Dodge Ram issue before and ended up being a pinched shut vapor line on the top of the tank not being ran back through its depressed channel and then made worst by the seriously over torqued hanger bolts deforming the tank.

    I bought a truck off my friend. I went to go put gas in and within $2 going into the tank it turned the handle off and sprayed gas out like in the video. I had to pump $1 at a time for $50 😅 my tank was almost empty (was sitting on the red line) when I opened the tank a bunch of air came rushing out so I definitely have a vapor lock somewhere and this video is definitely going to help me

    I just had a new fuel tank put into a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe, and it's only been filled twice since then. Both times, it overflowed...looks like the same amount in this video. It never did that with the other tank, or in our Buick either. I can't help but feel it's related, I'm just hoping it's not actually a valve within the tank. It has a warranty, but I don't want to pay for another repair. I'm already up to 1400 in this vehicle this summer. Some people tell me to get rid of it now, but I've only had it since June. My brother left it to me before he passed away and I guess I'm not ready to let go of it. It actually ran better before the mechanic started working on it. He suggested a new timing belt...then screwed that up and " fixed " it to make it better, but it's still not running as well as it did before the timing belt change. It still bucks once in awhile and the check engine light keeps coming on. Two other things it didn't do before it's initial " checkup " with the shop.

    My solution is to fill up the tank to about 5 gallons before full. Then stop. Let it sit for 30 seconds. Fill it up slowly for 2 gallons, stop, sit 30 seconds, 2 gallons, 30 seconds, repeat until full.
    I've used this a few times with no gas at all coming back out.

      I’m in jersey and my Nissan is doing this what I do is leave the car running and it will stop pumping but won’t spill gas unless the car is off it’s fucking annoying but expensive to fix from my mechanic apparently he quoted 600$ to change a evap canister and i cannot afford that atm

  • @SirTannerah
    @SirTannerah 7 років тому

    In the past i worked in a gas station and saw this on a regular basis. one thing that fixed some of the the customers " Before you activate the pump put the handle in the tank and try to use it a few times" sometimes when a previous customer tops off the end up flooding the censer or check valve trying to get up to that full dollar amount. this worked 16 years ago so take that with a grain of salt.

    From looking at his video he is using the second notch on the pump handle. I recommend using the first. It will fill slower, however it will be less likely to overflow. My wife had an 06 Pontiac Vibe with this problem. Using the slower setting solved the issue.

    • @snoopdogie187
      @snoopdogie187 7 років тому

      From my experience, and judging by the amount of fuel that came out, even the slowest setting will have a lot of fuel coming out for the videos example.
      If there are some not so bad problems, slower speeds will "correct" the issue.
      Same with a lot of GMs, they like to stop early, the worst ones will still stop at the slow speeds, but the better ones will work just fine with the slow speeds.

    This is what my Honda CR-V is doing but it doesn’t end. Like I could go out there right now, take off gas cap and it would start spewing out. It’s in the shop right now. $119 JUST to diagnose it. One thing I’ve noticed is no flapper valve door (little silver flap you know). Not sure if that’s cause.

    I used to work at a gas station and normally when I ran into vehicle with that issue, I monitor it to hear when its coming up then I unclick the nozzle quickly and do the rest of the filling process slow. it worked, but as a side mechanic things I've figured which could cause that issue are air in the fuel system, pinched lines, clogged lines especially the return lines and a dented tank.

    many vehicles today especially pickups have a hose in hose venting system which allows tank vapor to exit the tank neck as you fill the tank. It will regurgitate if you over fill the tank.

    while you are filling you are causing, what amounts to, a bow wave of fuel in the tank due to the force of that fuel coming out of the nozzle physically pushing the fuel to the far side of the tank. While still filling there's no problem, but once you shut offthat fuel that was being forced over there *points* no longer has the force pushing it so it comes back to level off. Unfortunately, when it gets to the filler neck you have an inch high x the width of the tank worth of fuel and you get the "tidal wave effect" where, because of the sudden restriction, the velocity of the fuel increases in that small space and....sploosh, all over your nice suede shoes.
    I learned that one in my first year when, as a first year apprentice and saturday morning jobs would be grease the trucks, check the wheel nut torques on every truck with a 5 feet long, solid torque wrench! ( easy now, but as a weedy 17 year old it took its toll) and i would top the tanks of all the trucks in the yard and end up with a blue puddle in front of the diesel pumps until a second year apprentice told me to stop pumping when the sound changed note and then pump small amount until full.I hated saturday morning jobs at that stage...the only good thing to come out of it was i got to drive some very cool tackle and that bit i loved

    We have older Rams spewing fuel back at people, today I diagnosed a brand new 2020 Ram with an EVAP leak. Plastic EVAP nozzle snapped off the fuel pump leaving some of it still in the hose. How? No idea as all these components sit between the top of the fuel tank under the bed. FCA makes some pretty shit vehicles.

    If the problem is severe enough to cause a spew that bad already, i wouldn't even try just filling it slowly. That indicates that there's a problem, and letting said problem sit and happen can cause more damage in the long run. I always fill on the slower fuel fill nozzle lock position because it stirs just a little less fuel and I can cram just that extra little bit that's not returned to the station's evap system as vapor. At least, that's my mental process. I've found that i can fill the tank on a couple of bucks less on average doing it that way than going full bore all the time. Either way, his paint job is probably suffering. I feel for him. tank replacements aren't fun. I wish him the best.

    Wouldn't this issue fall under the emissions warranty? They are typically 8 year / 80,000 miles. I'm asking since it could be an EVAP issue.

    Filling the tank slower is the best idea and I'll take it a little farther. Listen and feel the pump. You can hear and feel when the pump is about to shut off. One of my pet peeves is when people lock the pump and walk away or sit back down in the car.

    my 82 k10 doesn't vent fast enough for the new pumps so I just pump slower and it dose just fine tho it would help if I relocated the vent from the side to the top of the metal piece of my filler neck so my vent tube doesn't fill with gas

    I have this problem with my Jeep Patriot. It's the rollover valve in the tank and it sticks. This one valve causes all sorts of problems depending on which way it sticks. In one direction, it closes the air vent causing fuel fill issues like in this video. If it sticks the other way, it causes an engine stalling issue right after filling the tank as the raw fuel gets sucked through the canister purge valve. Rather than spend $400 on a new tank, I'm just going to add a new bulk head fitting to the tank and Tee it into the existing filler neck vent line. I've already added a catch can to the line between the canister purge and the engine to stop the stalling. And yes, I am aware this bypasses the "rollover" function, but if the thing is sticking open anyway due to Chryslers poor design, it's already broken anyway.

    I have an 08 wrangler and this fuel spray is crazy, I have learned to catch it b4 it happens,but it happens every fuel up. I just have to catch it in time or else it comes out forcefully like this guys. Just today I was filling fast and got distracted, not a pretty site. I want to just fix it , but don't want to just throw parts at it. for now though I just listen and stop b4 the auto shut off, check my gauge then fill really slow till my gauges is touching full.

    My 2007 Durango has done this for years. I just know how much gas my tank takes to fill at various levels and never let it completely fill to shut off the station pump.

  • @Emprivan
    @Emprivan 7 років тому

    Older cars tend to spit fuel, my 55 does. But the reason it does is because modern fuels tend to get super foamy when ajitated, even worse if the tank is empty and warm as well as fuel with Ethanol tend to vaporize quickly, cold gas in the ground going into a hot tank. I don't run into the problem with non-Ethanol fuel and just fill my tank really slow or surge fill , go fast then go slow fast then slow, listen to the sound of the fuel going in, if you can hear it in the fuel neck slow down. My assumption is that there is foamy build up in the tank that causes liquid fuel to stay trapped in the fuel neck, once the pump shuts off the trapped fuel has no choice but to be spit back out.

    I have a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country. It spews gas way more than in your video. :-( I've been putting up with it for a couple of years now. It takes about 15 minutes to put 20 gallons in the van. I can put in about a half gallon at a time. Then I have to wait ten seconds for it to settle. If I don't, there is geyser of gas that shoots out. Pretty sure what you have said is my issue. Need to check the evap system. Also, I get an error code on my dash that says "gascap" every so often. I know gas cap is sealing fine, but there must be some kind of pressure sensor triggering this. Need to get to this soon. Very frustrating.

Blew air through every line replaced charcoal canister vent valve purge valve and blew air through the line to the front of the engine of course disconnected and blew air through the fill tubes and return vapor tubes and everything is clear but every time I pump gas it spills a lot of fuel, my next thought is that tank might be issue I even knocked off the door that lets the glass in thinking it was the problem

    A slow rate of filling don't help. It takes about 30 minutes to fill my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5.7. As soon as you start pumping it cuts the pump off. It's a recall but Dodge doesn't consider it an official recall.
    It is a factory defect on Dodge just like the water rail under the windshield. Park your Dodge with the nose upwards & the water fills your floor board. So if it rains park with the nose downward. I replace the heather core thinking it was that but it still does it. Same here. It's a recall but Dodge doesn't consider it an official recall.
    Dodge SUCKS.I will never buy another 1.
