  • Episode 604. Two releases from LMD to consider for Canada Day. Their Beer Cask finish collaboration with Pile O'Bones and their Straight Wheat Whisky. While the cask finish is OK, the Straight Wheat is fantastic. Absolutely worth picking up for this weekend! #lastmountain #canada #whiskyneighbour

Happy Canada Day, Jon. I don't have any Canadian Wheat Whiskeys, but I am sipping on Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye. It has been very sunny here in central Texas and the third day in a row at least 100°F. I might try and find that award winning wheat whiskey that sounds so interesting.

AP Cask Strength is a great Rye! Glad you have some to toast us northern neighbours! Cheers!

I have not tried many wheat whiskies and the ones I have have been quite lacking in punch and flavour. These were all US whiskies but would be interested in trying some Canadian. Got to push our own spirit on this Canada Day long weekend. Cheers Jon. Glad you got a nice day, rainy here in the seaway.

I wish you could sip this one specifically. It has lot's of flavour. I agree, many 100% wheat are very plain. Cheers!

Hey Jon, I’m in Regina and Last Mountain is 20 minutes from my door. I have the Pile O’ Bones wheat whisky. Actually I’ve had it for a couple of years and mine is right about at the same fill level. Your tasting notes weren’t far off from what I’d think of it and much like you I couldn’t get past the weird sweet and soapy taste. I know you corrected yourself about a soapy note but when I heard you say the word I had an “ah ha” moment. That’s what I get out of it. I really didn’t care for it at all. However I did have a quarter bottle of their 2020 Distiller’s Batch (their take on bourbon) and it had oxidized a bit too much and also sat so about a month ago I figured it wouldn’t hurt anything. It wouldn’t be much of a loss to blend the two of them together in one bottle and let it sit for a while and marry. The result was actually quite pleasant as the wheat was a nice complement to the 75% rye and 25% corn mash bill of the distillers select.
Regardless, I appreciate the honest review and I have also had the hundred percent wheat and I agree it is a superior product. Great review Jon keep up the good work. 🥃👌

So cool you live close at the distillery and have made it out! I can totally relate to the soapy note. It is there, but then I thought it pushes slightly to that artificial gum note. Either way, not my favourite and I see we can relate. Glad mixing with a little "bourbon" helped it out. I may need to try a few mixes with this as well. Thanks for dropping in and sharing your experience. Cheers!

Have to admit, I've never actually had a straight wheat whisky. Smaller amounts in grain blends, but that's it.
Will have to remedy this at some point, it sounds interesting.
Guessing you're now into a month or so of freedom, imagine that's making you extremely happy! You've picked a good way to start off, to my mind...
    Stay cool out there! 😎
    Cheers J 🥃🥃

I am now a 12 month employee, but the summer is much, much more calm! No teachers, principals or parents, so it's recover from the year and actually plan a bit! This is good. Straight wheat is definetly something you should try. This has more character than Bernheim, but that one is easier to find. Cheers!
