The opening titles to ITV's Mexico 86 World Cup coverage, featuring the theme Aztec Gold that went on to be used for a few years to introduce Saints and Greavsie.
Me too. My mum bought me a VCR, from Dixons on Oxford Street just so I could record as many of the highlight shows as possible. It's heartbreaking seeing Brian Clough, Brian Moore, Saint and Greavsie. It seems like yesterday.
I love this theme. It's jingly, welcoming and fun. Most football themes these days seem to be primarily concerned with try get across the idea of 'epicness' of the event and social significance of football in general. I wish they'd get back to simple themes like this that just emphasise that football is meant to be fun.
Aztec Gold was retained for ITV domestic football well beyond the end of World Cup 1986. Brian Moore flew out to commentate on the final and new bosses at ITV Sport Bob and Trev decided to take the heavy burden off Brian by allowing Nick Owen to replace him as chief presenter of Mid Week Sport Special from September 1986.
This brings back great memories of playing Arcade Soccer on my Acorn Archimedes in the early 90's. Here's the intro to the game with this them tune. ua-cam.com/video/vCk_UGBYaL4/v-deo.html
The thing about this music is it's so uplifting and has the ability to evoke emotions from yesteryear that are very special indeed. It will always be way ahead of its time in April 2021 🙏❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤🙏
ITV are usually inferior compared to the BBC when it comes to covering World Cups but they absolutely nailed it in 1986. Great theme tune, great panel of pundits that year too. Brian Moore was a great commentator but he was also a great anchor in the studio, probably the best ITV have had in my opinion. The void in the studio was obvious during their Italia 90 coverage 4 years later when Moore stuck to commentary duties for that World Cup, despite how good Nick Owen and Elton Welsby were.
THE BEST World Cup football theme EVER and the best ever World Cup - it showed us that one guy can win the world cup on his own (apart from the hand ball) - World Cups were the best in the 80's and 90s as the players were legends... today you get 1 legend v 5 in the 70s/80s and 90s
...Real punch the air theme and graphics to get you all excited for the featured match. Better than the turgid Da da da daaaa da da da da daaa! dismal badge graphics of current MOTD!
This was the ITV Sport theme, broadcast in Britain. I must admit I don't know if it was also used in the USA. I know that the ATV Midlands series Star Soccer was broadcast as All Star Soccer in the USA with the same theme so it is possible.
So classic! Loved growing up in the 80s. Remember this so well and the Mexico86 mascot!
Got a tear in my eye....sod it, I'm in bits...what memories !
I'm with you bro
Greatest World Cup ever.
I’m seven years old again!
Me too. My mum bought me a VCR, from Dixons on Oxford Street just so I could record as many of the highlight shows as possible. It's heartbreaking seeing Brian Clough, Brian Moore, Saint and Greavsie. It seems like yesterday.
Great world cup and intro
I loved that world cup theme tune and it was so good ITV used it as the theme to Saint And Greavsie.
And The Big Match for a couple of years too
Brings back happy memories of Brian Moore. Great presenter. Before the days of Sky sports hype
The best commentator of them all in my opinion, sadly missed.
@@michaelmcdonald2348 totally agree with you. I wonder what he would think of all the stupid stats we have now.
Back when the world seemed more sane.
My first FIFA World Cup in my first football season in 1986 as an eight year old....Golden memories
I love the way kicking a team mate on the bottom of the foot at 0:14 makes it into these titles LOL!!
By far the best world cup or euro cup intro i have ever heard. It has stuck in my head since I was very young. Thankyou for adding this.
Everything was just simpler, and mostly better, back then. Greatest wc, imo, of all. And no pompous music themes. Love it
I would love to get this as my ringtone
My 1st memories of watching a football World Cup. Was nearly 9 years old as well
I was seven and can still sing it off by heart. Indelibly ingrained into my memory.
I love this theme. It's jingly, welcoming and fun.

Its Saint & Greavsie
The Greatest Footy Theme Of All Time.
Brings Back Gr8 Memories Of Brian Moore And Co.
Shud B The Theme 2 Premier League Footy On Sky⚽⚽
10 years old, first memory of a world cup, maradona, zico, socrates, rummenigge, laudrup, so many great players, best world cup ever
The last decent World Cup that ITV did. It was my 2nd World Cup that I watched after Spain 82.
Same
Couldn’t agree with you more
Legendary stuff, I look & nowadays and I think WTF, Just a simple theme tune and they can’t even get it together.
oh wow. Feeling my age now. what memories
Great theme, better known for its use in We Need Answers with messrs Horne, Key and Watson ('Let's Meet the Contestants')
Used for The Big Match in the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons
fantastic world cup ,great intro
It brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it as well, I had a bit of a tear when I played the song back to back yesterday
Second only to nessun dorma , both BBC and ITV opening credits for Mexico ‘86 were brilliant
They knew how to present a show back then, Great theme tune,.
Yes a good intro and the music was great - it stuck in my head as well
Aaagh The Football Attic theme tune. So many memories. One day they'll be a nostalgic podcast about it, a homage to Mexico 86.
Check out the Nessun Dorma podcast. Dedicated to 80s & 90s football with loads of Mexico 86 content. 👍
Love the fact this theme has clearly been composed on an old school Yamaha keyboard 😂
nice memory
Yes nice memory.
When I was a kid world cups seemed to take forever to com around, now I’m older they seem to come around so quick.
The thing about this music is it's so uplifting and has the ability to evoke emotions from yesteryear that are very special indeed. It will always be way ahead of its time in April 2021 🙏❤🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤🙏
You are spot on. It’s a melody for one thing! It transports you to a different world.
Aargh the Football Attic theme tune. The memories!

ITV also had Brian Clough as one of their pundits. His disputes with the others were often more entertaining than the football matches!!
Best ever
Soon as you heard this tune you new it's was gone be a classic ..
Unforgettable brings back happy memories 🙂🙂🙂
Hottest summer ... greatest games ..shit or bust every team ..
Me too, this still brings back memories even though I was only 4 at the time
The theme tune just brings a tear to my eye
Best football intro
Oh you have to say thats magnificent
Pure retro memories..quality
GOOD OLD 1980s Days ✝️🇪🇺

Love this song and video.
Trust me I will be overjoyed if we get a World Cup theme anything like this this year
Just get the chills whenever I hear this
Love the nostalgia. 😁
Cant Wait For United 2026
How can I convert this to my iPhone ringtone?
U new it was a game when this come on.
The CGI ITV Sport animated logo surprisingly still looks decent.
Didn't this tune get used for Saint & Greavesie too?
The BBC tune that year was an awful cacophony. This was so much nicer. ITV consistently had better World Cup themes. Their Italia 90 one was inspired
wana cry was 16 what memories
...Real punch the air theme and graphics to get you all excited for the featured match. Better than the turgid Da da da daaaa da da da da daaa! dismal badge graphics of current MOTD!
itv adapting the World of Sport logo as their main sports branding
Why werent any of the home nations featured in the opening credits?
Great intro only topped by BBC Italia 90
...P.S. Bought the single too.
This kind of reminds me of the theme to Just The Two Of Us
This small clip shows the UK peaked in 1986.
Before football disappeared up its own backside.😐
Far superior to the BBC's 'odd' effort. ITV always do seem to do the best titles.
Andy Merrett I honestly can't disagree even a smidgeon with what you say.
They're generally just useless at it.
I think this is the American version
This was the ITV Sport theme, broadcast in Britain. I must admit I don't know if it was also used in the USA. I know that the ATV Midlands series Star Soccer was broadcast as All Star Soccer in the USA with the same theme so it is possible.
Good evening 0:37
chales xD
0:34
Xd
RIP maradona
Bbc’s was much better…
Maybe. But nothing beats ITV's Italia 90 theme tune. 😁
