Hey there, fellow gamers! Welcome to my brand new Let's Play series of Lies of P, a thrilling soulslike game that draws inspiration from the beloved characters of Geppetto and Pinocchio. With a heavy influence from FromSoftware's iconic titles like Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and the highly anticipated Elden Ring, Lies of P promises to deliver an unforgettable experience.
In this exciting first episode, we dive headfirst into the dark and twisted world of Lies of P. Join me as we unravel the secrets behind this eerie universe, battle ferocious enemies, and overcome formidable challenges. Trust me, this is not your typical fairy tale!
After a brief introduction, we jump right into the action. The demo of Lies of P has turned out to be much longer than expected, and I couldn't be more thrilled. As we embark on this epic journey, we find ourselves face-to-face with the imposing and grotesque Parade Puppet, the first boss of the game. With its towering presence and menacing aura, defeating this monstrosity will be no easy feat.
As I take control of our hero, a mysterious and hardened version of Pinocchio, the intricately designed world of Lies of P comes to life before our eyes. The visuals are stunning, with every corner exuding a dark and foreboding atmosphere. The attention to detail is remarkable, from the subtle movements of the characters to the intricate architecture that surrounds us.
With the Parade Puppet's haunting cries echoing in the distance, I mentally prepare myself for the battle that lies ahead. As a seasoned veteran of FromSoftware's games, I know that patience, precision, and adaptability are key to conquering such challenging encounters. Armed with a razor-sharp blade, my Pinocchio incarnation leaps into action.
The Parade Puppet proves to be a worthy adversary, utilizing a combination of lightning-fast strikes and devastating area-of-effect attacks. Its grotesque appearance, with strings hanging from its body and puppet-like limbs, adds an extra layer of eeriness to the encounter. The boss's moveset requires me to observe patterns, dodge with precision, and strike at the opportune moments.
After several intense minutes of combat, with each successful dodge and well-timed strike, we finally emerge victorious. The Parade Puppet's once imposing figure collapses to the ground, leaving behind a trail of shadowy smoke. The sense of accomplishment is palpable as we bask in our hard-earned victory.
But the journey has only just begun. With the defeat of the Parade Puppet, we unlock access to Hotel Krat, the game's hub area. This sprawling location serves as a central hub where our hero can rest, upgrade their abilities, interact with NPCs, and prepare for the arduous challenges ahead.
As we explore the intricately designed corridors and rooms of Hotel Krat, we come across a variety of intriguing characters. Each NPC has their own story to tell and unique services to offer. Engaging in meaningful conversations and making important choices will shape the course of our adventure.
Additionally, Hotel Krat houses various shops, each specializing in different aspects of character progression. From weapon upgrades and skill enhancements to purchasing consumables and armor, the hub area becomes our safe haven in this twisted world.
With the episode drawing to a close, I can't help but be excited for what lies ahead in Lies of P. The combination of its mesmerizing world, challenging gameplay, and deep lore make it a promising addition to the soulslike genre. Join me in the next episode as we continue our journey through this dark fairy tale and face even greater trials.

Fully agree ash with the combat system and the girl in hotel reminds me of the doll in bb one of my biggest gripes is window of attack and movement is sluggish however at release there is a game in there and it can be good 😍

In addition to not being able to use the star gazer to level up, that first star gazer you unlock before the first boss only allows you to level up a certain amount of times. I found this out through practice when I decided to commit souls sin and just grind and get my weapon damage higher because I was getting sadly super frustrated with the first boss. Personally I think this is not a thing that should exist in a game. Its super cheeky and super pretentious of them to limit levelling up when the game is far from perfect and still so janky.

It's really hard to not compare this game to other Souls likes, given how much it pulls inspiration from them in all aspects. I think the biggest thing for a lot of first attempts at the genre is how the weapon attacks feel. You hit the nail on the head when you said there wasn't the same level of impact when you hit an enemy, and I think that's the case for a lot of games where it's their first attempt at the genre; they haven't quite nailed that feeling down the same way From Software has (I remember having a similar thought when it came to Mortal Shell). However, I think a total comparison does do this game a bit of a disservice. Like you said, try to forget how to play games like Elden Ring and Bloodborne, and figure out the combat for this as it stands on it's own. Once that happens, I think the game starts to flow a bit better. the timing windows for dodges and perfect blocks are tight, but the game is very responsive when it comes to those inputs. I've found that if you learn the enemies movesets and don't mash your own inputs, it's almost like a dance; just take it one input at a time. Personally excited to see where it goes in the full release.

There's also a good amount of reward for figuring out the perfect block timings for enemies, since doing it will not only break the weapons of a lot of the mob enemies, forcing them to do less damage and have less range (useful for those beefy mobs), but perfect blocking actually builds up an enemies Groggy meter, making Fatal attack opportunities more common. Dodging is super useful when you need your space and learn the moves, but, much like Sekiro, you want to learn the timings to get those perfect blocks to keep their Groggy meter going up.

I found this game to be quite hard and in some regard unfair in ways that From Soft's games aren't. I feel like while this game has a very established look, in terms of gameplay and mechanics it gets confused. It seems like Lies of P wants to be just as fast and brutal in combat style as BB but also just as precise and calculated as something like Sekiro. A good example of this is the damage you inflict on bosses, if you use a light weapon and are not constantly attacking the boss has every opportunity to simply gain back health. To counter that you have to perfect block and this games version of perry but that does some serious damage to your weapons if you don't time the blocks perfectly. Good timing also rewards you with some rally potential. But when you go through the chapters defeating regular enemies in some cases it is perfectly okay to just wale on them and this is where the game gets confused. If the core style of the game is this precise, calculated fighting style then similar to Sekiro that should be the style favoured and forced through out the game so that the player has opportunity to learn before boss fights. If the style of the game is like BB where its fast and brutal and there may be exchange of blows often then that should likewise be reflected in the gameplay including boss fights. One can argue that this gives you options, however fighting bosses without perfect blocks is significantly harder. Fighting common enemies without perfect blocks makes almost no difference. Lies of P has to choose which combat style it wants players to favour.
On a brighter note I think this game has a lot of potential and is just shy of being really fun. It looks great, the world is interesting, the characters and NPCs do need some serious work at least they appeared to be quite bland in the demo. There are some interesting weapon mechanics and unique weapon builds. But like with a lot of these souls like games some of them sometimes miss the point.
