Great playing everyone. My favorites 1. TAMA Bubinga really sings 2. Pearl Masterworks awesome wide open snare and overall sound 3. Ludwig legacy maple great pop 4. Gretsch classic sound. The Mangini set up is special and in its own class. Happy Holidays to all!
Holy moly, I’m not familiar with the gentleman who was playing the living shite out of those Yamaha AHM’s, but his technique and speed was incredible. As much as I don’t care for Pearl, I must say that the Masterworks kit did take the cake. Merry Christmas guy’s and have a wonderful New Year 🥁
I guess Mangini can be an honorable mention! That was hilarious throwing that in the mid to end of the segment. Great work as always, I love the mics used on these kits. The drums sound amazing on my home theater setup.
That Canopus kit looks absolutely stunning and sounds amazing. I would be so torn trying to figure out which kit to get though as, they all have great characteristics.
In no special order the ones I liked best were the Ludwig Classic Oak, Gretsch USA Custom, Sonor Vintage and The Ludwig Legacy Maple (although I have heard them sound better in other videos). While the Pearl Masterworks sounded great, I just don't see it for the cost. The other kits I mentioned first sounded better to me. And The Ludwig Supra Chrome Over Brass was the best sounding snare drum which should be of no surprise. A little disappointed that there was nothing from Noble & Cooley, but I don't know how this list is determined. Excellent playing by everyone (and the gentleman who played The Yamaha Absolute Hybrid gets an "honorable mention" in this category) and as always great video.
Impossible to pick a "best". If I wasn't looking at money, I'd probably agree with your #1 Pearl pick. Great tone. If I'm looking at value and great tone...gotta go with the red-headed stepchild Mapex. That combo of maple and walnut just talks to me, even beyond the odd logo thing on the rack toms. And they had the best wingman in those Wuhan Koi chinas!...mad respect to all the makers, though. Thanks for another great vid!
I think I preferred the Tama and the Canopus from these. The Tamburo has a great snare but I think I prefer the acrylic Tamburo kits. The Pearl and Ludwig Kits were my least preferred.
My Top 5 #1 - Pearl Maple Gum - So want this!!! #2 - Ludwig Legacy Maple 4pc Bonham Drum Set #3 - Ludwig Class Oak #4 - Tamburo Opera Series #5 - Tama Star Bubinga
Something here for everyone. From classic to modern and in between. Great job DCP. Happy Holidays everyone. Two quick comments: Did anyone else notice the distinct note each of the Tama Bubinga toms produced? You could literally play four note melodies on them. Second, that Legacy Ludwig bass drum scares me. Afraid it might damage my walls if I were to buy/play it in my home. 😜
Of your actual picks, the sonor, DW and Tamburo really stood out…Tama gets my honorable mention for the kick alone but bubinga toms are squirrelly. Mangini’s kit sounded unreal, probably my favorite.
You guys have taken that last, last, last, very last, completely the last, last ,blup, blup padiddleblup, crydiddlebluplup Gallup to new heights!! I want the whole mic set up and sound engineer!! They all sound terrific..
@@adamfrost8417 Thanks. It’s 8/10/12/14x6.5/14/16/22x18. Best kit I’ve owned. The wrap sparkles and shines so nice against its blackish gray base layer.
PDP are really stepping up their game especially with the classic wood hoop kits. Also their finishes are awesome and flawless. I love em , and am a proud owner
Ludwig Legacy Maple and the Pearl Maple Gum were the standouts for me. All the kits were really drool worthy and sounded sweet. The time and effort you guys put into these demos is amazing and really appreciated by the whole drumming community thank you! Top Shelf.
I had a drummer come to my studio one day and I swear after 5 minutes all I could think was “how the fuck does he make the kit sound that” and that was the day I realized sometimes it’s not even the kit, it’s who’s behind it that makes it sound the way it does (obviously minus all the variables like tuning, head choice, etc)
The Bonham Legacy Maple beautifully proving my theory that thin shells and big drums were born for each other! I have to admit; the Masterworks build method with the Gretsch USA shell recipe is a pretty great sounding set of drums. It's great that Pearl finally found something they can be good at besides hardware. It probably doesn't hurt the sound that Pearl's mounting hardware is a bit more science oriented as well. Still, I think Gretsch USA has better finishes and there's no doubt whatsoever regarding which brand is going to hold its resale value longer. Great video as always!
A lot of great kits at the DCP Temple. In this section, I would go with the Sonor Vintage Rock which literally rocks, the Mapex Saturn and the Ludwig Legacy.
The problem with Ludwig is they laugh at their own warranty, so, considering the money one will spend on a new kit, when it comes to Ludwig: RUN the other way!
Lmaoo based on enthusiasm the Yamaha wins by a landslide, absolutely love it. I have to say though, the Mapex Evolution Saturn is a surprisingly impressive stand out here. I expected a little more from Canopus, but that Tamburo kit sounded sick as well. Thanks for the video, guys!
This is my first time finding your channel and I’m really enjoying it. When you guys said that you were the largest independent drum store in the world I was surprised, but when you said that you were in New England I was even more surprised I also live in New England so I have to visit sometime
DCP and others. Here is something to think about: (1) how a set of drums sound is particular to that drummer's ears (their perception), and (2) it can sound quite different to other band members and therefore, what the drummer likes may not be the "best fit" in a drumset for the band. As a drummer turned bassist, I can honestly say that learning the bass (or another instrument for that matter) has made me a better drummer for sure. Why? I can understand better from direct experience how the drums fit into a band better. When I was a drummer, it was from MY perspective only. Now, as a bassist, I understand what a guitarist (or bassist for that matter) may want in a drummer (sound) and what they really want as a main quality in a drummer (solid time). Having said that, the Ludwig Oak set sounds really good. For me, I would go with the 20x14 BD, 12x8 TT, and 14x14 FT. A good set of 13" hihats', 20' crash/ride, and a 17" crash. This would fit in perfect! Great video and thanks for posting!
The two Standouts to me... The Sonor Vintage Series Rock and the Pearl Masterworks Maple/Gum. Tonally impressive. However... I really like the Tama Star Bubinga/Rosewood and the Tamburo.
The Kick on that Gretsch USA Custom was very good. The Sonor Vintage Series Rock - Amazing! Winner for me... The Temburo Opera Series Stave. To die for. WHAT a great sounding kit.
I like the Tama the best even though I think they'd sound even better with clear heads. Always heard bubinga was the best and it shows here. Especially the bass drum Also helps that the hi hat and ride on that kit sounded amazing
woah, this Tama just sings, only it seemed it could use some fine tuning on the heads. Also, I don't like to like DW, but this time I can't help but like. Those were the two kits which stood out for me. Mapex was pretty good, too!
They all sounded great..I'd like to hear a few different heads on each kit also. Hoped that a Noble & Cooley kit might be in there but hey I know it's only a subjective list anyway. No British Drum.Co either. No acrylic drums in the countdown either.. sa la vié. When is Premier going to expand into the USA again ? I love your videos and the talent and humor you guys have. You always kill it ! Merry Christmas
I think Premier exists more or less as a registered name and little more. I haven't seen a kit in person in a UK shop since 2013 and nothing online since they moved to Asia around 2015. A couple of places say they're official dealers and can order direct from factory but I've never tested that. I'd sell body parts to get a 90s Signia kit in my preferred sizes, but most people keep hold of them knowing how good and hard they are to come by.
My favorite sounding kits here were the Gretsch USA Custom, the Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple and the Ludwig Classic Oak. I also quite enjoyed the sound of the Legacy Maple kit; I'm not personally a fan of playing those sizes (I'd go 12 or 13 rack, then 14 16 22 for that setup) but man, that sounded powerful. But I think we're now in need of Drum Center of Portsmouth's official top 10 flannel shirt countdown, also hosted by Adam.
I agree on the Gretsch, Yamaha and the Classic Oak. I would ad the Tamburos (specially the snare and kick drum, and also the Sonor Vintage and the Pearl Masterworks. What I found most "interesting" (personal view, of course) is that the most gorgeous drums, like the Canopus and the Tamas, where the ones that sounded worst. The finish of the Canopus matched with either of the others mentioned, would be a dream. Still I know the US Customs have a beautiful finish already
IMO,the Yamaha (honorable mention) kit by far had the best tom sound out of all the kits.I'll have to listen again to rate the best bass/snare sound per kit. That tom sound was unbelievable though which surprises me as I consider them to be more of a fusion/jazz kit.Its cool as heck that you post videos like this to help consumer make a good decision on which to buy hearing them all in the flesh,so thanks for the post.
I'm a Tama guy, always have been, but I really liked that Pearl/Gum and Sonor! Tama always seems to have a unique tom sound, different from any drum, it's just their thing. That Sonor sounded so warm and that Pearl when hit the right way almost sounds like an electric pad, but in a good way. From this list, DARE I say, I'd take the Sonor for my basement (the Tama gods are furious). :P
Yes! Pearl Maple Gum shells rule them all! I will not upgrade to anything else but those… someday. I wanted to like the Sonor Vintage Rock kit more, but the 13” & 16” toms were just tuned too high for a “rock kit”. Maybe two-ply heads tuned lower? Loved the Ludwig Oak kit too.
They're all great, but I liked the Gretsch USA, Sonor, and Ludwig legacy maple the best. The Gretsch USA room mic sound was better than the full mix sound of some of the other kits.
Dearfriends, a few considerations I wantto share with you: as Italian I can tell that here the Tamburo brand doesn't have many fans, we prefer foreign brands....you know the grass is always greener...As far as the other drum sets I've been impressed by the Ludwig Bonham maple as well as the Mapex Saturn, which btw I consider an underrated brand. Surprisingly I didn't see any N&C set that I personally love. All the other kits are definitely excellent but haven't heard anything breaking the rules though. Possibly because the level is extremely high as of today and raising the bar any further is a mission impossible ? Ciao
Thanks for the video. It's nice to see what is out there. I have always liked Sonor Drums, but I wished there were better options for larger piece shell packs and chilling a little bit in price. The local chain store tried to pass one on those that didn't kmow nuch about "trim" levels when they put out a Yamaha Absolute Series in the area that is usually for testing out drums. I wonder how many Stage Customs they sold when the customer discovered the price difference....lol. I hope to buy soon, and will consider your store, despite being out of state.
Nice to see my Tama rosewood star bubinga kit made the cut. Im lovin the sh-t out of these drums. Also love the look and sound of those maple gums. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year DCP!
As always your videos are amazing I personally like the Ludwig classic maple because a) the 26 inch bass drum just kills it and b) you have animal on the drums that guy is a monster
First off, the Legacy Maple Bonham kit is in a class by itself, and with those big sizes really can't be compared with the other kits. Of the rest, the Ludwig Classic Oaks were killer - great punch and bite, and that bass drum sounded the best of all on the room mics.
Mapex Saturn is the clear winner. Those drums really sing. Melodic yet powerfull.
That Ludwig Oak tho… best for me. Then the Hybrid Yamaha. What a world we live in, with dozens of incredible sounding kits available!!!
Thanks for putting Barrett behind that ludwig bonham kit! There can be no other!
I'm still in love with the Mapex Armory I bought 2 years ago, but these videos sure get my heart racing.
Merry Christmas everyone!
Tama once again, just a cut above.
I am liking Gretsch more and more these days.
And the Tamburo Opera, such a musical sound.
I'm a Pearl owner, but I actually liked the sound of the Ludwig Classic Oak kit the best. #2 The Pearl Masterworks #3 Tomburo.
My gosh... those Koi China's are amazing sounding. I LOVE that dark one. Start listening to them @ 10:38. Amazing to my ears.
Some of the very best!
Thanks, James. Happy holidays.
Exactly the Tama was the best. They all sounded good tho
All pretty incredible. Liking the Pound Town, the Tama, Sonor, and the DW. Keep up the great work, guys.
I've been a Tama guy for 30 years, but that Ludwig Oak kit was sweeeeet!
Holy moly, I’m not familiar with the gentleman who was playing the living shite out of those Yamaha AHM’s, but his technique and speed was incredible. As much as I don’t care for Pearl, I must say that the Masterworks kit did take the cake. Merry Christmas guy’s and have a wonderful New Year 🥁
That's the great Steve Michaud!
I guess Mangini can be an honorable mention! That was hilarious throwing that in the mid to end of the segment.
Great work as always, I love the mics used on these kits. The drums sound amazing on my home theater setup.
As a Tama guy, through and through, I am shocked at how much I loved that DW sound. Hands down my favorite of the kits this year.
That Canopus kit looks absolutely stunning and sounds amazing. I would be so torn trying to figure out which kit to get though as, they all have great characteristics.
You guys are amazing, love the humour. Wanna see heaps more of you characters next year! Cheers! 🇦🇺
Appreciated. Cheers, Mo!
That tamburo kit sounded massive! I was not expecting that at all! Great snare too!
Yes! That kit is pretty special!
The quality and projection of your reviews are hands down amazing! Ty for years of entertainment
Much appreciated Tom!
All the sets are awesome but the real good stuff starts at 6:51 with the Tama Star Bubinga / Rosewood.
That tamburo was really nice
In no special order the ones I liked best were the Ludwig Classic Oak, Gretsch USA Custom, Sonor Vintage and The Ludwig Legacy Maple (although I have heard them sound better in other videos). My Top 5
#1 - Pearl Maple Gum - So want this!!!
#2 - Ludwig Legacy Maple 4pc Bonham Drum Set
#3 - Ludwig Class Oak
#4 - Tamburo Opera Series
#5 - Tama Star Bubinga

All instruments sound great, and the brands that made them are great too
So happy I bought my PDP Concept Maple 7 piece in Moon Dust wrap from you folks
That's a nice kit!
@@adamfrost8417 Thanks. It’s 8/10/12/14x6.5/14/16/22x18. Best kit I’ve owned. The wrap sparkles and shines so nice against its blackish gray base layer.

Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple. Superb.

Ludwig kits yes yes yes
Tamburo sounds great
Those Paiste cymbals are all I want for Christmas though
I had never heard of Tamburo before today.
I was very impressed.
I do like Sleishman though.
Wonderful demos. Absolutely great playing in particular the bonham one 😊
1. Pearl Masterworks
2. Mapex
3. Gretch
Sound great!!!!
I'm kinda lusting after that Yamaha concert tom kit!
Those Chinas on the Mapex kit sound incredible!
Love the intro… amazing shirt transitions!
My favorite kit was the Yamaha hybrid maple. Those toms sound like tuned thunderstrikes.
my personal favorites are Yamaha AHM, Pearl MG, Gretsch USAC and the Sonor Vintage.......
Shane became a much better drummer in 2021!!!
I noticed that as well. Looks like he’s been putting in the time.
Super, super nice cat, Shane. Bought a big Sonor kit this year. He and his team are fantastic.
Would love to have the kit name up the whole time. Great as usual!
A lot of great kits at the DCP Temple. In this section, I would go with the Sonor Vintage Rock which literally rocks, the Mapex Saturn and the Ludwig Legacy.

Guys you are effing funny. Plus content is great. Some of the best drum sounds I ever heard. I wish I lived in the US just to visit you.
15:50 And out of nowhere, my plumber comes in and absolutely shreds.
Host: "how many shirts should I bring?"
Director: "yes"
The starclassic walnut birch is an awesome kit too. Great tone, Versatile, Great build, And a beautiful kit.
Gretsch USA customs for me then the Yamaha hybrid maples, that drummer had some nice chops also!
Sonor, Tama, Yamaha, tomboro. Even that masterworks maple/gum seemed like they mixed themselves.
For me - Gretsch USA Custom was №1
Yamaha second place
Great video, I love the comparison of the different kits to hear the unique sounds of each.
All sounded so good to me. Really depends on what you want.
Ludwig Classic Oaks and Sonor Vintage for me. Thanks for all the great videos.... you guys are the BEST!
Thanks for watching!
Pearl Masterworks, simply unbeatable
Sonor and Tama (bubinga) were my favs.
that ludwig bonham kit is just a pleasure to listen to, great drumming too!
ludwig classic oak and tamburo opera.
Tamburo are making the best drums we have ever heard .. truly exceptional pure sound and tone AMAZING!
They are pretty outstanding!
That tamburo kit had me trippin. Loved it.
Whoever played the yamaha hybrid kit at the end. That dude is legit. Who is he?
Lmaoo based on enthusiasm the Yamaha wins by a landslide, absolutely love it. I have to say though, the Mapex Evolution Saturn is a surprisingly impressive stand out here. I expected a little more from Canopus, but that Tamburo kit sounded sick as well. Thanks for the video, guys!

The Tama kit around 7 minutes in is just heaven
Tama, ludwig, sonor, pearl are the best I think. Most overall fatness to the notes. Honorable mention to gretsch and mapex
The Ludwig Bonzo kit with the Paiste's is my dream setup. Perfect!
I turned my headphones way up & let the Bonzo power wash over me!
The two Standouts to me... The Sonor Vintage Series Rock and the Pearl Masterworks Maple/Gum. Tonally impressive. However... I really like the Tama Star Bubinga/Rosewood and the Tamburo.

That he is!!
Barrett’s playing on big kits never get sold. He honestly sounds like Bonham would if he were alive today.
That's accurate, as JB would be in his 70's today. JK Barrett ❤️

Pearl and Tamburo, my best, and not only because i Know Tullio (Tamburo) and i bought my first Tamburo in 1991, The supreme Tamburo Original.
They're all great, but I liked the Gretsch USA, Sonor, and Ludwig legacy maple the best. The Gretsch USA room mic sound was better than the full mix sound of some of the other kits.

Merry Christmas, Ethan!
I love the Final Countdown kazoo ;-) Too funny.
As always your videos are amazing I personally like the Ludwig classic maple because a) the 26 inch bass drum just kills it and b) you have animal on the drums that guy is a monster
Lots of nice sounding kits. Im a fan of ludwigs. The bass drum is soo familiar sounding. How many recordings have i heard that on?

oh been waiting to hear this list..
