Great review, you brought out some great points that I feel have been missed by other mainstream journalist launch reviews. At first I was underwhelmed by the styling, particularly disliking the colour accent around the headlight cowl. The black bikes look far better in this respect, then they make it worse by painting the forks and frame red. Not just any red, a really horrible glittery shade of red. For that reason I think the grey bikes are the best of the bunch, no red forks and frame, no colour accent on the head light cowl just dull instead of hideous. The headline bhp figure is a league above its natural competitor the MT07, as is the exceptionally low price. It is astoundingly great value for money without the dreadful inadequate boingy suspension or snatchy throttle mapping that blighted the Yamaha at launch, and for several years after. However, comparison to the KTM 890 Duke or even better the re-release of the KTM 790 Duke would be the closer rival. Somehow, the general biking public seem to miss the fact that KTM have had a killer light weight sports bike for several years which looks like a brother from a different mother. Dynamically the KTM is likely to wipe the floor with the Honda, that’s chassis, engine & brakes plus the option to add a whole raft of electronic aids (at extra cost) that are not even available on the Honda accessory listing. KTM as a brand just hasn’t quite broken into the collective biking consciousness yet in the way that Honda has, but in reality I suspect if it were possible to blind test the Hornet back to back with a 790 Duke, the Duke would be the unequivocal winner every time. Now there’s an idea for a test, perhaps you would like to run such a comparison as mainstream channels are never going to it for fear of upsetting Honda.

Cracking video and tbh I really like the bike and I don't think it looks to bad and absolute bargain at 7k ,thinking with one or two mods and a nice slip on and you'd have a cracking bike for less than 8k , really enjoyed the video but still waiting to what's happening with the black bird 😮
The predecessor Hornet was made in Japan also had 4 cylinders with DOHC while the new Hornet has half of cylinders with SOHC and assembled in Thailand to cut cost. No thanks!
thanks for the review, i'm looking forward to getting mine and got a great deal buying end of jan for a 1st march plate, including free sports pack, delivery, half price first service. As a total package for the money it's hard to beat, and as far as the looks go i think it's great personally, & better in the flesh than on vids. IMHO it's what it feels like sat on it 'looking out' rather than 'looking in', id liken it to when i was younger and had GF's that maybe were'nt shall we say supermodel material, but we sure had a good time :). GL
Mate, you don't test the engine of a 2cyl by accelerating from 2nd gear..... Even 4cyl 600cc bikes pull well on 2nd gear.... Slow down to 30mph on 6th gear and give it some juice...
I've got one on order, moving from an MT-07. It does everything that does, and then some. I do agree on the looks, but then I can't see it when I'm sat on it, and who gives a toss what everyone else thinks :-)
Thanks again for the great review. I found the Hornet a little cramped (I'm 5'8"), no room to move back and lean into the bars, and the throttle is a little snatchy. . Helps to ride in user mode with braking on 1 and power on 2. You identified issues in corners. I have not test ridden that hard unfortunately. I think the GSX 8S is well finished and smoother for everyday use. The Hornet is more urgent at 6,000 rpm but the GSX has sooth everyday usable power and is not short of power. The bikes are similar to 100kph and probably get to 140kph in a similar time. Higher speeds and the Hornet is clearly quicker, if you still have a licence by then... For better or worse, pick up my GSX tomorrow. Reply
I would have this over the old Hornet, don't mind the looks, I like fun bikes and give me decent torque any day. A 600 inline 4 modern hornet would be gutless with all the emissions regs. Good review 👍
Currently have a CB650R... I will probably upgrade when Honda comes up with a fully faired CBR750RR. 750 engine sounds really good stock, can't wait for a supersport platform on it.
Hey I just wanted to ask as a new rider will 100 ccs make a big difference when it comes to power and acceleration? The cb650r is actually my dream bike it’s absolutely beautiful btw.
@@oppositez6958 it really depends…on this case the 650R is faster top end because of the 4 cylinder while the 750 has only 2 but roughly same power figures on the dyno reading. 750 has more power down low but the 650 dust the 750 on the top end. Another case is just like the CB500 engine compared to the CB650R only 150cc difference but the hp difference is almost twice. So yeah it depends not only just size of the engine.
@@neoretroguy4488 low down power is more useful though inline 4s are gutless at lower revs and that’s where you spend most of your time. I thought the same way but after riding the Hornet I’m never having an in-line 4 again!
I remember when I was looking for my first motorbike in 2011 and fell in love with the old Hornet, it was a yellow one like in this video, but my Dad ended up finding me an immaculate Z750 for 2k which was really fun for a first bike, so I never did get to ride the Hornet :( Might have a go on a new one!
The GXS 8S is, apparently better on the road with more midrange but I am not at all keen on its looks. It seems the younger crowd do like it though. I'd much prefer the Hornet for it's looks, sound and top end.
For a short time, I had a 2020 CB500F. This looks and sounds just the same, just more CCs. It's not really a very good reincarnation of the Hornets with their wonderful inline 4. Perhaps it's just an engine testbed for a new 750 Africa Twin? Honda using the Hornet name only.
I wish they'd spend more money on the suspension. I'd rather have a decent shock than TC, variable engine braking etc on a 90hp bike. Every bike I get I need an aftermarket shock and fork work. There is never any plushness. Maybe I've just answered my own point - MT09 SP. Still like the Hornet though.....
Had a proper look one today. It is built to a budget which is obvious. The stickers look tacky. Im 6ft tall. Bike felt tiny. Im sure its great ride. All the reviews are positive on that. I went to order but left underwhelmed and back to looking for a new bike.
Thanks for a great review, I currently own a 2019 Yamaha MT 07, and this bike has more displacement, it’s fine you say you get a huge rush of power when you switch from 1st to 2nd and it list the front wheel is that a bad thing?!!😷🤪
I have an hornet as well, something that is annoying me is that "ticking" noise at low rpm, I've heard of people saying is the PAIR valves, do you also hear it on yours
Won't be hard at all to elevate the look of this bike. First, match the color of the side panels protecting the radiator (the one with the hornet logo) to whatever the body color of the bike is (in this instance, a glossy black) but if the bike is in white or yellow, it'll defo look more apparent. Second, the headlight is just too thick. Make it as thin as the glossy panel that surrounds the headlight from the side to bottom, then it'd definitely look cooler and more aggressive. Lastly, the silencer is looking a bit boring, but that's a standard Honda silencer for you haha...
Nice video but I don't think the price will stay there long also I tried to book a test ride and honda haven't bothered getting back to me after 4 days already. Clearly not wanting to sell them 😂
I did not particularly like the look to start with, however in the flesh and given time its growing on me. My concern is that the Suzuki 8s looks even more modern and will the Hornet look dated quicker. However it is a wonderful ride!
I know the GSX-8S coming out has a slightly bigger motor and runs the same crankshaft interval angle, but it's making less peak power. Wonder how the Hornet and 8S will compare side by side with the different ways they make power?
there is a Hornet 250, 600 and 919. ll 4 cylinders, im not sure ho i feel about this new (but looks like a 2005 crashed bike) hornet 750. that said, ive owned many hornets so im on the fence.
Great review. Between this and the GSX8, there is some real hope for everyday fun bikes that just get it done. QS is £240 or part of the Sport Pack. Got to be worth considering
Looks like all the other bikes in this category Z750, GSR, MT07, cover the manufactuers badge and you wouldnt be able to tell who made them, once upon a time each manufacturer had an identity, a styling cue that made them stand out ........... now? boring look alikes.
Hey, this is a pretty random question, but I was looking at your previous videos about the africa twin and the NC750X. How tall are you? whats your jeans/pants inseam? Trying to figure out just how much better, if any, the windshield experience is when comparing them for you. You look like you might have a similar tall build like me.
I’m starting to really like this bike. I hope it doesn’t come to the US. I’m tapped out at four bikes. Now if Honda put their 1100 twin in that thing… I’d be running to the dealer.
@@exothermal.sprocket They have that 1100 Rebel cruiser with a different tune than the AT. I’m not sure if they changed the stroke though. I kinda doubt it. Edit- Same stroke.
@@blipco5 Yeah, there's only so much that can be done outside the engine. Sure you can change the flywheel weight, the transmission gearing, the cams and compression. But until the major moving pieces are modified (crank, stroke, piston, rod), the engine will behave largely in a particular way.
@@exothermal.sprocket Agreed. I’m not about speed any more. I just like big torquey engines where you’re not having to down shift under load. I have a ZRX1200 with such an engine. Select a gear for the particular twisty road you’re on and just use the throttle.
@@blipco5 1164cc of fury! I've never had a chance to ride one of those, but I have been on a late model 1250 Bandit, which runs kind of the same way, but stupid torque even before 4K.
I love the Hornet 900 and feel like the 750 does a great job of continuing the brand. Hornet motorcycles in America are actually quite rare. They never sold well and they weren't allowed to use the Hornet name. Instead going with Honda 919/599.
A bit of history,,,,,about the 270 IL2. Yamaha took their tenere 750 engine and bored it to 850 and made it to 270 from 180 to use in the sands of the paris dakar rally. 270 crank have better grip over all really. Short there after they made the yamaha TRX850 and TDM. Yamahas GP team looked at the TRX IL2 "crossplane" crank when doing the famous 2009 forward R1....MT-10 etc ...And then a lot of brands followed, iirc Husqvarna NUDA was one of the first....BMW has gone the route as well. I owned my TRX for 12 years, it ended up with a TDM900/ TRX engine with 6 gears/quickshifter and programmable ecu 100/100 hp/Nm Must have been the priciest TRX ever :D :D

Bike looks like a ktm which I'm not into. I typically don't like black bikes but those one looks better black. Send like a fun bike tho maybe if we can get passed the looks and enjoy it's ride it will take over the mt07 market. Remember you can't see them bike while you are riding it lol
Get past the looks (especially that cheap-looking frame in red, I think the black-framed bikes look better) and that's an amazing bike for the proce. I predict big sales
Sad to see this even called hornet as its just parallel twin. 2 cylinder will ever have same characteristics of 4 cylinder engine. I personally ride MT07 but i have ridden hornet and you need some balls to go over 7000 rpm ...
Pity they ruined the styling with the horrible droopy headlight (yeugh). Maybe easy enough to change for another? Least you don't have to look at it when you're riding. Other than that, I think it's a good "inbetween" of the MT07 and the Ninja/Z650. I think it's probably a better choice for me than those two. Nice!
Awesome review. Man it looks like the bike is great but the looks is just not there. Honda really could have done better. Curious to see your take on the Suzuki GSX 8S.
It's a fair comment and maybe so ... but then Yamaha MT07 is so very popular with younger riders and I personally feel Honda want a piece of this market. I think if it appeals to older riders such as yourself then maybe Honda have got it slightly wrong
@@BikesofRye 2009 CB1000R here and I test rode this CB750 Hornet last month but it's miles down on both torque and mid/top end rush. It just made my old 09 seem so advanced for it's age and this cb750 Hornet doesn't even have a sexy single side swingarm or factory CBR100RR style stubby underbelly silencer.
i hope you can lol, i get mine tomorrow ready for 1st march :). I talked to quite a few people, instructors included, and everyone of them said the same thing, that was basically 'ride what you want', it's all about how you use the right hand. i'm no speed freak but think this is a bike i will be able to ride easy in the lanes, and still feel that accelleration buzz if i want to. @@Bob-ts2tu it's kinda funny you replied to me today... I ended up getting the CB750 and this morning I had my first crash in it 😅 nothing related to the bike itself, it would have happened even in a 125
@@andrefcluzouch, sorry to hear that, hope u and the bike are ok. I reckon unscheduled dismounts are part of the game (that's my excuse anyway) and i had one myself last saturday on my 125 when a car let me out of a junction and another couldn't wait so jumped out which made me unable to turn as quick as would have liked, making me run out of space and turning the wheel in the muddy & greasy gutter, biting the dust lol, so hope that's the last one for quite a while. anyhow, how did u find the new bike as your first big one?
@@Bob-ts2tu thanks for asking! I'm fine, just a few bruises, nothing serious. The bike is in a rougher shape than me, but at first glance it should be easily fixed! Hope you and your bike are also fine! I think the Hornet is an awesome bike for anyone. It's true that it has some power to it, but in the other hand, she is very agile and easy to maneuver. It's like you said in your first comment, it all comes down to the person who sits on top of it! My crash yesterday was 100% my fault, wasn't focused enough while lane splitting and didn't see a car changing lanes, so nothing related to the bike itself. Thankfully, the crash was at low speed.
@@andrefcluzmay i ask how you find the throttle, as there's a few reviewers who say it can be 'snatchy' in some modes and too on/off. what's your opinion? - is it something you learn to control with practice, not a problem, or do you find it can be a PIA at times. btw i fitted some H&B engine guards today, just in case :)
For me it's a no. Looks are meh. I utterly hate that screen. Don't need new-fangled sports modi. The exhaust makes it sound like a cheap chainsaw. The worst part though really is the screen. If I want a tablet or phone, I'll use the ones I have. It just looks a bit cheap.
The looks let's the bike down so much, it's such a shame. I was really considering this bike as an option when I saw the rumours, Nd then they released it and i lost all interest. Ended up getting a 2023 790 Duke instead. Speaking of, will you be getting hold of one for a test ride
The 790/890 duke’s are made in china, its a chinese assembled engine. Not to mention that any honda out there will outlive any ktm by 30 years.. dont get me wrong ktm’s are hella fun but be prepared for warranty repairs lol.
I can only hope this bikes it to the US. I like the MT07 but it doesn't have a single modern feature like a sipper/assist clutch like the R7 gets. MT09 is a bit more bike than im looking for though it is a good option. Triumph and aprilia dealers are few and far between where I live so on that alone I cant consider them. The Kawasaki P twins sound like shit and after 5 years on a ninja 300 I want a bike that sounds great. Pretty much my options are a MT07/09 or hope the Hornet makes it over here
Suzuki GSX-8S? I currently have a Z400 and am highly considering the suzuki as an upgrade in this class. I think everything you get included with that bike puts it at the top of its class currently.
Why do so many people obsess about the looks? I suspect those who actually ride a lot are much more interested in the performance, handling, reliability etc.

Cracking video and tbh I really like the bike and I don't think it looks to bad and absolute bargain at 7k ,thinking with one or two mods and a nice slip on and you'd have a cracking bike for less than 8k , really enjoyed the video but still waiting to what's happening with the black bird 😮
I am planning upload this coming Thursday on the Blackbird... been awaiting on some parts that have taken longer than expected
People were hating on this but its a MT07 killer, plus all that spec for very nice price
Chill cass haha
@@cassius348 it has like 20% more raw power than MT07 :P
GSX-8S is the true MT07 killer because the Hornet has single cam
@@quanwick4516 and the Hornets got more BHP than the Suzuki 😂
The predecessor Hornet was made in Japan also had 4 cylinders with DOHC while the new Hornet has half of cylinders with SOHC and assembled in Thailand to cut cost. No thanks!
I remember the MT07 is snatchy at low speed so used the clutch to smooth things out . The upside is TORQUE :)
The torque was Always there. The snatchyness is Euro emissions nothing else.
Excellent review sir!
Thank you kindly!
thanks for the review, i'm looking forward to getting mine and got a great deal buying end of jan for a 1st march plate, including free sports pack, delivery, half price first service. GL
Very good review, imma buy mine soon!
I love my 04 Hornet the sound at redline is just insane I can't accept this hornet without the inline 4 😒
I thought that until I test rode one, I’m never having an inline 4 again! That engine is amazing and sounds great in person.
Mate, you don't test the engine of a 2cyl by accelerating from 2nd gear..... Even 4cyl 600cc bikes pull well on 2nd gear.... Slow down to 30mph on 6th gear and give it some juice...
It seems surprisingly potent from the reviews I’ve seen so far
I've got one on order, moving from an MT-07. It does everything that does, and then some. I do agree on the looks, but then I can't see it when I'm sat on it, and who gives a toss what everyone else thinks :-)
Had no idea you were local the roads between Cromer and buntingford are good for a go 👍
Oh yes I know the one! 😎

I would have this over the old Hornet, don't mind the looks, I like fun bikes and give me decent torque any day. A 600 inline 4 modern hornet would be gutless with all the emissions regs. Good review 👍
Just go to a dealer and try a CB650r. I bet you will change your opinion.
Good video mate. It looks like a great bike for the price , but it somehow looks very old fashioned to me despite being modern
@@neoretroguy4488 - Holding my breath for a CBR750 too. Failing that maybe an R9 instead.
Go test ride one, it’s awesome! I bought one straight away 😂
The hornet sounds nothing like the sewing machine engine in the 500f
Why would anyone buy this one over the 4 cylinder CB650R?
It’s more modern and likely more fun to ride, maybe the next gen will be better in the looks dept.
More modern?
@@stfu6397 eh, yeah.
Less weight. More torque
Because it’s a far better bike! The engine in the hornet is way better than the inline 4… I thought like you until I test rode one.
I quite like it but the skinny rear tyres is strange
I really like the look of this bike,so I bought one, on looks alone
Great review, beautiful bike and the price is amazing
Thanks! 👍
Best in segment ⭐⭐⭐
Seems like an extremely fun bike
I've heard that changing the traction control helps with the throttle jerking ness ..😎
the headlamp sometimes reminds me of the gypsy danger's head from pacific rims movie which is cool!
I like the looks of the bike. It's a shame we can't get one here in the States - yet.
I am surprised... surely that's a huge missed opportunity
Clearly not wanting to sell them 😂
Same here,i asked for a test ride 2 months ago at main dealers..they never got back to me
Same as me went to Dealer asked for Test ride , they didn't bother to come to me so I left .
It doesn't look like a hornet it just looks like a bigger cb650f. Should have had the round headlight and nicer chrome exhaust.
Great bike, hope they come out with a after market headlight
I did not particularly like the look to start with, however in the flesh and given time its growing on me. My concern is that the Suzuki 8s looks even more modern and will the Hornet look dated quicker. However it is a wonderful ride!
parrot
Looks like a Grom 750
I know the GSX-8S coming out has a slightly bigger motor and runs the same crankshaft interval angle, but it's making less peak power. Wonder how the Hornet and 8S will compare side by side with the different ways they make power?
there is a Hornet 250, 600 and 919. ll 4 cylinders, im not sure ho i feel about this new (but looks like a 2005 crashed bike) hornet 750. that said, ive owned many hornets so im on the fence.
I’d love to see you ride the new GSXS 8S to see what you think .
Absolutely brilliant real-world review from a real bloke.
Any chance of including pillion-carrying in future reviews?
Thanks Martin! You wanna jump on the back?
Hey, this is a pretty random question, but I was looking at your previous videos about the africa twin and the NC750X. How tall are you? whats your jeans/pants inseam? Trying to figure out just how much better, if any, the windshield experience is when comparing them for you. You look like you might have a similar tall build like me.
Anybody know what jacket he is wearing? looks great
I prefer old one look, L4 engine and 180 rear tire. With such power band I do not care about electronics.
The old one is gutless at low revs the new one is loads better
Modern CB500 not a thing to lust after.
😂😂😂
Go test ride one! You will soon change your mind
great bike but i cant get over the looks. it looks like a bike from the early 2010s, probably the worst era aesthetic wise
True looks cheap
Looks cool to me but I’m old 😂
If I didn't know what it was and no badges etc I'd have guessed at an updated Kawasaki ER,right down to the frame colour. It's certainly not pretty.
It's a shame because if it looked better I'd buy one great engine
It's true I agree totally. I wish they've kept to the neo retro cb650r styling.
I’m starting to really like this bike. I hope it doesn’t come to the US. I’m tapped out at four bikes. Now if Honda put their 1100 twin in that thing… I’d be running to the dealer.
The Africa Twin motor is a very long-stroke engine designed to tractor around, not spin up and rev freely.
Instead going with Honda 919/599.
shame the hornet looks like a big chinese125: i have a 1999 hornet wont buy this
😂😂😂😂 you know that
Your missing out, I thought the same until I rode one. Put an order in straight away… what a bike!
Yamahas GP team looked at the TRX IL2 "crossplane" crank when doing the famous 2009 forward R1....MT-10 etc
...And then a lot of brands followed, iirc Husqvarna NUDA was one of the first....BMW has gone the route as well.
I owned my TRX for 12 years, it ended up with a TDM900/ TRX engine with 6 gears/quickshifter and programmable ecu 100/100 hp/Nm
Must have been the priciest TRX ever :D :D
Didn't the nuda have a 315° crank.
Smoove frottle ?
Thanks for adding this comment. It really helps me and all those that watch this video 👍🏼
A lot of bike for the money. Second bike to compliment my Tracer 9GT?

It weighs about 197kg wet weight.
Looks like a ktm mated with a cheap chinese scooter. That on top of the skinny rear tire completely kills the bike.
Does it feel as fast or faster than the Aprilia 660?
It would be close... If I was to bet on it I reckon the Hornet would beat it slightly
@@BikesofRye Hell ya thanks for the info! I hope they sell these In the US. They have the gsx8-s here but no hornets yet.
I think it looks Cool but I’m 55 old. Maybe this bike was made for riders my age.
It's a fair comment and maybe so ... but then Yamaha MT07 is so very popular with younger riders and I personally feel Honda want a piece of this market. I think if it appeals to older riders such as yourself then maybe Honda have got it slightly wrong
@@BikesofRye I just don’t understand all the negative comments about the bikes looks. Bikes in the 80’s were hideous by comparison.

the headlight of hornet looks a bit like "Venom" face😅.... but looks pretty nice👍
Twin cylinder.. not for a street bike.. in my 750 shadow yes... but not a street.. it sounds tinny
Can you just ride the new 24 Street Triple RS already so I can decide between that or the S1000R 😂
You will need to tune into TMF or the likes for that bike sorry. Triumph don't want me to sell their bikes 😉
Can a beginner get away with it, or is it too much of a bike for a first timer?
i hope you can lol, i get mine tomorrow ready for 1st march :).
