  • After buying the cheapest Porsche Boxster S 987 in the country, I spend lots of time and money trying to sort it out.
    I am able to fix MANY problems, including replacing the Engine Air Filter, replacing the Air Oil Separator (AOS), & cleaning all of the oil and carbon from the intake and throttle body.
    At one point, however, my local independent shop and I discover a problem that may not be feasible to repair...

    Waiting for next project, sir. Your project 987 and SL Merc bot have gotten rather much views compared to any of the other videos. If you still have motivation, please continue sir. I think you're great YT narrator, you just lack some ... "YT friendly" ... project car to make videos about.

      I agree. The 987 was supposed to be an AutoX race car build, but I ended up getting out of it due to the extensive water damage. I had to move, but now I am working on a big project that I plan to unveil soon (pending acquisition). It will be the new Rolling Stonks headquarters, where I will most definitely get some new project cars going with some professional mechanics. It's pretty serious though, so it's going to be a couple of months before I'm able to start making videos of that.

    Sorry to hear of your problems. Mine was just written off in a front impact a few weeks ago and I was going to ask if you needed any parts... Then at the end you sent it back!! Your problem with the roof leak is easily fixed by clearing the roof drains and your corroded loom if really beyond being usable could have been swapped for mine...oh well, good luck with your next car... I'm getting another Boxster after I've parted out mine.

      I tested the roof drains, and they seem to work just fine. I believe the water ingress was from the top not fully sealing at the sides near the window. I sprayed it with a hose and water was easily able to get in there where those straps broke. I even tried replacing the straps, and that didn't work. I was hoping the local mechanic would have been able to do something like splicing in a new wiring harness, but they weren't willing to try it. When it comes to these modern cars, their wiring, and their computers with anti-theft programming and all that, I'm hesitant to start cutting and splicing in electronic modules. Sorry to hear about your car! Hopefully the insurance company gave you enough to get a new one!

      @@rollingstocks The insurance payout was fair (after negotiations...) I have just purchased an 07 Cayman..

      @@juliank911 the entire time I was owning this car, I was thinking "I should have bought a Cayman instead" - congratulations on your acquisition, those are VERY cool cars! Not having to deal with the convertible top and the leaking makes the 987 Cayman a very attractive alternative.

    Did you check the rear drain pipe holes....the rain or wash water runs down inside the roof where the pipes are.If they are blocked it stays in the car and makes its way down into the cabin.

    • @rollingstocks

      Yes, I did, and all four of the drain holes I tested worked well. I believe the water was coming from the sides near the windows where the top was not sealing properly. I even replaced the elastic straps in the top to try to get it to seal, and it still wouldn't tuck in like it was supposed to. By the time I returned the car, I was starting to think that someone put on a bad aftermarket or incorrect fitting top on this car.

    Real shame you bought a dud, mate. I wouldn't part with my 987.1 S. It is a brilliant car. Maybe get out for a proper drive in a decent example and you may find out why Boxster owners don't care for a gas guzzling V8.

      Yeah, in retrospect I should have paid a little more for a cleaner example. I am still considering getting a 718 Boxster - I did a review of that car, and it was awesome!

    So you knew the roof leaked and you left it outside anyway? Or, were you caught in a storm? I also have an 05 987.1. It's to fun to drive... I don't think I could ever sell it.. Lol. Good luck.

    • @rollingstocks
      @rollingstocks  Рік тому +2

      No, I did not know the car leaked when I got it. The dealer made it seem like everything on the car worked great, and failed to disclose to me that the roof was leaking. I even asked him about the roof, and he said it worked perfectly and that it was new (which is was not). Then, the transporter's truck "broke down" while he was shipping it to me, and it got left in an Oregon parking lot for several weeks in the rain. By the time I received it, the electronics had already been soaked. On top of all that, since I didn't know that the roof leaked, I parked it outside temporarily while I located a garage for it. By the time I was able to get a garage for it, it was too late - the electronics were destroyed. It was definitely fun to drive though - I would consider getting another one, but newer and with less problems.

    Hi Vincent,
    It looks as though I bought this exact Porsche from Carson Cars and it seems to have all types of problems with it. This dealer is claiming to not know anything about it.
    Is there any chance I could get your input?

    The 987 can often need 're-telling' it has optional extras fitted like yours had (such as the bi xenon lights washer jets and heated seats) when your battery fully dies. Only issue is you need someone with a Porsche diagnostic tool to re program the car so it knows it has them after a flat battery, like I had to with my car.

    • @rollingstocks
      @rollingstocks  9 місяців тому

      The issue of someone needing a Porsche diagnostic tool became a MAJOR reason I decided to let go of the car. The local, and only two European auto mechanics were unable to re-program the car because neither of them had such a tool. Not the car's fault, but definitely Porsche's fault for not giving owners a better solution for when their batteries inevitably die.

    You’ve connected the elastic in the wrong place, have a look on UA-cam, plenty of people have done that job. The sink holes never work totally even when cleaned in my experience. Why Porsche put that module under the seat where water can get in so easily is beyond me! I’ve changed that because of water ingress.

    • @rollingstocks
      @rollingstocks  9 місяців тому

      I watched every UA-cam video I could find on the elastic job, but there's a lot going on back there, maybe I did get them wrong. One of them was still attached, and I could have sworn I put it in the same spot. A waterproof box for the module under the seat is a MUST for long-term 987 Boxster owners.

    Man, so sorry you had to do all that work and still not a keeper. I'm praying you didn't install those coilovers lol. No one else is going to give that car as much love as you did 😆

    • @rollingstocks
      @rollingstocks  Рік тому +1

      Nah, I was able to return the coil-overs, luckily. At least the stuff I did was kind of easy and fun, so I didn't mind. The new owner of the car will be much better off, and that's worth it to me.

    "A better built car" ??
    Not at all. You're blaming Porsche for the fact you yourself spunked your cash on a clapped out banger. That's not fair. I've owned numerous Porsches, and they're cracking cars!

      My SL was a hooptie when I bought it too - I've restored it back to what it is today. The main difference to me is the durability of the interior components, which could be a direct result of having a hard-top versus the soft-top. The newer 718 model that I drove had a very nice build quality to it though - comparable to my Mercedes.
