Shipley Art Museum in Gateshead was built by a bequest from wealthy art collector, Joseph Shipley

Shipley Art Museum in Gateshead was made possible by a bequest from wealthy local solicitor and art collector, Joseph Ainsley Davidson Shipley. In addition to paintings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, it now comprises some 10,000 items which which includes ceramics, wood, metal, glass, textiles and furniture along with contemporary art.
