- I was asked by the Beeb to be their video consultant (early days) but then we both realised they had very little video equipment outside of simple playback machines - quadruplex etc. So I gravitated into a role of making short projects about interesting buildings with interesting people. In this case the wonderful Beatrix Campbell.
they didn't tell them it was Carl Orff 24/7 in this place
People who designed this should be made to live here forever
Living anywhere in byker is torture

living in the old Byker was damp mould slums, the new Byker housing warm dry clean but the inhabitants have changed that's the problem not the housing, people destroy good neighbour hoods that's the problem, when Parishes closed that was the first nail in the coffin
I live there unfortunately..........it’s criminal that the council destroyed a community and built a festering sewer in its place.
No one wanted to live in the old damp Tynside flats anymore.
Ye’ve got the rang accent to talk aboot Byker pet! Does not look like that nu. Still 👍 to channel for finding this and sticking it up.
Hi when was this filmed? It looks like early 1980’s but wondering if you know the year. Thanks
1988
We lived in that community in the mid 80s was an amazing place, its an absolute dump now graffiti and run down.

They should stop nuilding student flats and put the students in there. Give the locals the nice flats, that would be a laugh.
That's so true ,why build love it's all wrongly places for students there living in luxury while everyone els lives in shit hols
Byker wall........awful.......criminal how people were put in here out of a lovely valley...what did you do to them
I bet Mr Erskin never lived in this crap hole
+dislexic landlord its like a slum there these days ..
Byker s a great place cos snobs like you don’t live there
The problem. The Homeless regulations, just a tick box lottery. It amazes me they still talk about waiting lists. Followed closely by useless housing management, little enforcement of tenancy regulations and the usual do gooders. My qualification, working class background and I worked in housing for 25 years. Outlook for hard working British people, not in their hands as it should be in a true democracy.
