Hello from Yorkshire. 🦔💕☺️ We help our hedgies here and have a lady next door who helps foster them so have hedgie highways in the fense too. ❤ thanks for sharing Rae and co
My home backs onto a cemetery. The fence is made from Iron railings that run deep into the ground, however I made a hedgehog,(cat, fox, badger, weasel, stoat) highway with an angle. grinder.
Interesting 🤔 checking the suitability of neighbours gardens before creating access is something many, I believe would not have considered. Now off to sign the petition. Thank you for the link. 😊👍.
It’s controversial perhaps to advocate for hedgehogs but not have any hedgehog highways in the garden. But I cannot bear to place the hedgehogs in more danger through my own action - and I believe that’s worth being upfront about as it may be helpful to others. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment
Another valuable video, thank you. Sad that the UK has a red list, and shame for hedgehogs being in that level of danger of extinction. Have just signed the petition, thanks for sharing.
Hello Michelle, thank you for taking the time to comment. Yes, it is very sad, and many of those endangered are our most beloved species too. Thank you for signing the petition - that's at least something we can do to try to help out our hedgehog population
@@HedgehogsHollow I have about 3/4 of an acre of garden with some wooded area, I built a hedgehog house for a hobby and love nature, it was immediately taken 🥰 just wondering how many houses can I have? Can they be close together? Or have to be in different parts of my garden. Thanks 😊
I have three boxes in my garden, two of which are right alongside each other, whilst the third is a few metres away. They have all been used and lived in, sometimes all at the same time. So I think it’s fine that they are close, but make sure wherever you place them, that they are in a quiet spot that has cover. Mine are all against the back fence, beneath large shrubs that give the hedgehogs cover and replicate the cover of a hedge.
Terrific video ..I was also informed that 2 other factors play a part .A) pesticides B) the Badger .Seems the badger which has protection is the only animal that can tear open a curled hedgehog .It really is tragic state of affairs and is it true that although threatened this amazing animal still lacks official protection ... They are amazing creatures off to sign your petition , and let me know on the other factors listed please ...Happy Hedgehog watching ...from Helena :) 👍
Thank you for taking the time to post a comment. I’d certainly agree that pesticides (both agricultural and domestic - like slug pellets) and badgers very likely are contributing factors. For whatever reason the report chose only to highlight habitat loss and road casualties. But I do agree - these are likely reasons for decline
@@HedgehogsHollow The British public chose the hedgehog as the favourite wild animal but the badger got protection ,Did this have a link to farmers ??My friend flound 3 scraped clean skins and took to the vet .He confirmed Bandit Badger's work. .With badgers on the increase I have to say the amazing hedgehog seems doomed ..Just so inoffensive .To fight for their protection would be a start and I think you are the very man :)
Sadly where I live, though quite rural, I have busy roads on both sides of my house. I have found hedgehogs in my garden but I won't encourage them to commit suicide on the roads to get here. The local council build squirrel bridges across some roads, why no hedgehog tunnels?
That's a great point, Ron, and a very good idea. I'm sorry though that your circumstances don't allow you to enjoy the hedgehogs visiting and living in your garden. There are a few campaigns on at the moment to try to get more protection and support for hedgehogs, so hopefully at some point that includes some sort of protection for them to cross busy roads safely.
Hi Marc, that is a fair observation. I cannot advocate for the organisation one way or another, and you are right to flag your concern. I've signed the petition and so far have received some email correspondence from them, but I've chosen to ignore it any further. I can only bring to people's attention this petition and allow them to make their own choices. There are other petitions on other websites and platforms, and perhaps in the future I can explore bringing all of those together. Thank you for flagging this and raising it for our community to consider.
Astro turf / concreting your garden should be banned it ridiculous considering the biodiversity crisis we are in. My neighbour has black plastic all over his, because he doesn't like picking up his dogs poo and can hose it off the plastic!!

That's a great idea - and a creative solution

The petition is run by change.org,If you check online, change .org have a bad reputation, many people complain they have been scammed by them.
