Using trained horses to work young horse Oisin

  • Absolutely beautiful session with young horse Oisin. This is only his third time in the arena so after the initial play time exploring the arena...and it's contents he starts to work really well with Evenos and Custard who can do a far greater job of teaching him these early lessons.
Evenos and Custard know how to work in single file both in front and behind at liberty so I utilise this skill to effectively long rein Oisin with out the need for any ropes, he learns the voice cues and learns to go forward in front with Evenos being the one to keep him moving forward. I then let Custard increase the level of energy while Evenos shows Oisin how to remain calm and what does and doesn't involve him. They go on to do bits on their own before finishing on a lovely calm moment.....Lots to build from.

Oisin is hilarious. He's like the kid in class with ADHD who constantly disrupts the class. But wow, to see where he's come from in such a short time is amazing.

You are amazing Emma. The things you can do with your horses is mind blowing. They just stand there and dont get bored. They do all these things for you without treats, it must be they do it out of love for you. And that's even better. Olsin looks like he has been with you for years. We would have never known this is the same horse you brought home. Awesome work.

Oisin so needed Evanos, in this video you can see how this. Gelding him was the best decision for him for sure. Hormones and not knowing how to handle them made him a monster, when really he's so sweet and very unsure of himself. How we can take so much from him and learn.

@@screaming4221 no he had those removed as he was too dangerous for Emma and his temperament didn't suit being left as a stallion. If you listen and watch Emma's videos she does explain this. And he is a much happier horse now that he is gelded.

Emma, I enjoyed seeing Oisan's progress SO much ! Evenos is an angel, deserves incredible credit, and Custard is... just an amazing role model. I think your using "herd" teaching is the way to go. I've seen it happen often, bringing in new foster dogs with serious social problems, in our family's adopted dog group. Their communication and teaching , without aggression, is something to behold, and has never failed at our house. I trust them, and they've certainly helped me turning unadoptable dogs into home/family ready. I've seen our dogs bring elderly abused dogs, brought in at death's door, give them a will to live. We work as a team. Very best of luck. I know you'll have wonderful success with Oisan !

This was so fascinating to watch! I've been trained to ride the "traditional" English way but of course it makes sense to use social learning with social animals and "trick" them to follow and learn from you with fun and following older horses. I'm so eager to find out more and think of training from a completely new angle!

And his acceptance of your love and affection toward him is amazing.Gee whiz- if only you liked horses just think what you could accomplish!! Joking, Mam. Your horses are blessed to have been found by you. Good on you, now and always.

Darling. You are doing my dream. Solo with the critters. When the time came I was able to do it I was 50 and stuck at home taking care of geriatric dad which taught me something quite different and it was a fair exchange. I did have my horse but no solo anything’s away from the property! I knew no one and the “only one on the block”. The powers that be had something else for me to learn more. We did Parelli and I did have ground games down thru level two. A lot like your stuff but you are a lot MORE natural. Now at 68 I still have that mare and necessarily “herd” a quarter horse mare. she always had horse for company. Faylool is a Tennessee Walker lead mare....the extroverted left brain. ANYWAY. She was almost three when she came to me out of pasture with lots of horses....a great start in my opinion but being lead mare type she was very herdbound....dangerous for a beginner! We did ok in a limited way ( very little riding maybe 25 hours). We were happy. We’re all retired! Thanks for your show. If I had a youngster and money I would share your videos with her and provide her the environment needed for this kind of adventuring.
