Thank you Ray Wilson for being part of Genesis and for your contribution to the group.
Such a shame the last iteration of Genesis didn't work out. Ray Wilson was perfect on vocals and captured the vibe of Gabriel and Collins really well, while maintaining his own soulful and cultured nuance. Not sure why it only lasted for only 1 album as Ray Wilson has gone on to prove that he's a great songwriter, musician and vocalist who surely could have collaborated with Tony and Mike on a high creative level.
If I were Tony Banks and Michael Rudeforth decides to go away (as he did) I would have gone to ask Steve Hackett to come back. I would have made an agree and with Ray Wilson that would have been probably the best Genesis of the 21 century.
tony banks is sooo cool, he just sits there and plays the intro as if the audience wasn´t there at all , as he always did. he is the man!!
Saw them on this tour in Marseilles (France). What a fuckin' good show!!! Ray Wilson was perfect on Peter Gabriel songs and was "just" very good on Phil Collins songs!!! He deserves much more success and respect!!!
Shame it never went further
Probably in the minority here, but I wish Ray were the singer today, with Phil drumming. He has a great voice for this music.
I wish someday Tony or Mike would open up about this period of the band more. There were so many bizarre decisions made seemingly out of nowhere; the indecisiveness with drummers, Tony's resignation to uninteresting and bland keyboard patches, the weird fadeouts that robs particularly the title track to CAS and kills any sense of suspense, the sudden backtracking with touring plans after the album sold worse than they expected, and the fact that they expected their comeback would be this massive, popular event to begin with. It's all just so strange to me. They had he makings of a great reincarnation of Genesis but ran it into the ground through poor decision making.
There was so much going on in the background particularly with Gabriel. They have talked about it on tv shows about the band. Fascinating how the music and the lyrics were written separately, Peter working very much on his own.
Unbelievable how great bands put the stuff together with it often not being all composed together.
One example is how the Bee Gees wrote the Saturday Night Fever songs before the film was put together even though you'd swear the songs were written for the film!
They should have let Chester Thompson take over as the drummer. Never understood that decision. Also think doing so many Collins songs so soon after he left was a HUGE mistake. It just highlights that he’s gone, and the new singer is a poor fit for them.
Also not sure Ray even wanted the job. But how do you say no?
I read an interview with Ray where he said Tony and Mike had purchased these huge megatons for their American tour and then ticket sales weren't good enough for the huge shows where they'd use them
This vocalist brought something to the table
Ray Wilson’s voice is perfect for this song. Lots of low end power. I think it’s better suited for Gabriel and Hackett era songs.
Everything Genesis recorded is amazing! Everything Phil Collins recorded is amazing!! I think Ray Wilson has done a wonderful job !! It's a real shame that they did not record another album together.
All these negative comments about this version of the song are complete idiots. This is bloody brilliant and Ray sounds like Peter Gabriel. This is amazing and those who hate it must be high on drugs.
Great singer this is a killer version of the song and I am an old genesis fan so I can say it ROCK ON
+palmer baggins yeah!!
perfect! at least someone knows what they are all about! don't get the want to be's below...uh this is ORIGINAL GENESIS! fml...lol
Think they should have included ray in the reunion.
Pity they couldn't have managed to play it in the original key...
Sorry, but that singer did a horrible job. Made it sound like a cover band.
Why in the world did this version of Genesis not stay together and take off? The singer was a refreshing new change for the band. They should have just kept Darryl Stuermer on guitar and moved forward.
This is a great version - Ray Wilson nailed it. Should have done a couple more albums with him for sure.
NOT THE BEST VERSION WHE EVER HEARD
Wilson is The Pure "Power-Blood" !!!!
A "Scotch/Highlander's voice" !!!
Power for Scotland !!!!
I was devastated when I had 2nd row for St. Louis and the tour was cancelled. Seeing this is like pouring salt in that wound. This would have been unreal!
I've seen a lot of classic bands whose music I've loved, knowing that maybe only 1 or 2 of the original members would be there, but I'd go even if it were a tribute act --- I just want to hear a good job done of music I love that's faithful to the original recordings, and if you can't the original folks all together, some are better than none. There's an act that comes around my area quite a bit that does nothing but pick a classic Rock/Pop artist & do their music all night, note for note, and it even sounds like them vocally. My wife & I go see them about half a dozen times a year at $30 a ticket & they rarely disappoint us. I'm glad Mike & Tony were trying to keep the Genesis magic going as somebody needed to, and having only them two is better than zero, but then again, I'd go see a good Genesis tribute band as I said. HOWEVER ---- having said all that, SURELY they could have gotten a better singer, I'm sorry. Good job on the music though from Mike & Tony & the fill-in players as well.
I like how you can understand the lyrics vs the original version.
SO CLOSE to actually seeing Tony play this thing....hands, I want hands!
This singer is fucking great!
No sean fanáticos sordos!!! Es una buena versión ... voz buenísima ... se que se extraña a nuestros héroes ... no es sacrilegio recrear a los grandes !!
@klausgroi I agree...even though Banks and Rutherford are there, this is a hollow shell of their former greatness.
He sounds great !!!!!
when Peter Gabriel left, they lost me too. The Gabriel albums are phenomenal, still listen every week.
Actually, Rutherford and Banks have more right to the name Genesis than anyone. They are the only two to have been on every album and tour.
I think Collins has been there right from the start. Took over the vocals as Peter Gabriel left the group. Since then it got a bit downhill. Then Steve Hackett left... Sturmer and Thompson kept it going for Live concerts. Hackett had more succes than Banks and Rutherford, going solo. All in all a group of such extreme talented musicians. Much movement, going alone, coming back for projects and live gigs. Really one of my all time favorites.
@@johannesvandongen6009 Phil Collins -and Steve Hackett- joined Genesis after their second album Trespass (one of my personal favourites, believe it or not).
Genesis is Peter Gabriel. The others? Great musicians, but without the real Geneis spirit.
Is there anyone more tedious than a music snob?
@@johannesvandongen6009collins joined on the 3rd album, Nursery Crime, only Banks and Rutherford have been on every album, and every tour.
Ray's vocals sound generic, over-polished, and almost karaoke for most of the song ... and then out of nowhere absolutely NAILS the quiet bridge section -- I mean, gives me chills. Weeeeeeird.
What an puzzling incarnation of the band!
They should have done one more album with him
Agreed
Should have done a decade with him, take the step down, stick it out and build it up again,a third great era would've happened. Bands never give the "next" guy a proper chance. Especially when its the "third guy".
While this version of the band had some quirks, I thought that given some more time they could have really solidified their own sound. the album was fair but had some real solid moments. I would have liked to have heard a second album from them.
unbelievable performance
Nah. First of all they have transposed this song one whole step down: from E major to D major, because Ray Wilson's vocal range is very narrow. Peter and Phil are incredible and a hard act to follow. Both!!! Even if some people aren't aware of it: the heart and soul of this song is Tony's brilliant keyboard work. I have it written out on my channel. This sounds too dark. I repeat it over and over: Ray is a fine rock/pop singer, but not a great one as required for a band such as Genesis. BTW: Nir Z was a fantastic choice as the drummer. I love his approach to Genesis material. I have such fun watching and listening to his playing.
One tone is NOT a fifth, sixth or an octave. People cannot change the structure of their vocal chords. It is far better and safer to sing in a key you are comfortable with rather than force it and lose your voice later in life......they also changed key for Collins in later years so there ya go.....
Love it. This is a GREAT lineup and you get NIR Z on drums. He's amazing!
The true Genesis is Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford
Yes !!!
Why? That line up lasted for less than a decade. The other line up lasted for near 40 years. Get over yourselves.
what about Anthony Phillips? He was the driving force in the early days. Without him the band probably would never have existed in the first place. The Trespass era Genesis is also 'true Genesis', but then again so is CAS era Genesis. It's all Genesis.
This must line up must come close
@@hpatss4966 Because it’s the definitive sound. And at their peak of creativity and originality.
From Genesis to This.
I agree. My interest in Genesis faded with each album, after Steve Hackett left. Ray Wilson invigorated this. They should have done another album with him.
He did a great job , and I seen this tour and it was brilliant , should have done a second album , feel sorry for ray that it didn’t go any further, also drummer was superb.
As much as i've tried to like this version i just can't.
I love that shot that starts at 1:14 !!!
Yes...strykertube..you are 100% right.
Another thing that most of the anti-Ray fools dontg realize is that if Ray was still with the band, they would still be making new albums. But, Phil does not want to do new Genesis albums. So, Phil has basically turned Genesis into nothing more than an "oldies" act. I would much rather have Ray in the band and be able to hear some new material.
MIKE, TONY, CHESTER,DARRIL AND PHILL COLLINS, THAT´S GENESIS !"!"!"! for many years they played togeteher, and done a great job !!
"Daryl", you dingleberry.
Then you're teacher doesn't know much about Genesis either. If you think that this version is the best since '75, be very thankful you got the grade that you did.
the singer and the drummer are excellent ! they should make a new different band !!
If the great Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford decide to call what they are doing Genesis, they have a right to. You have no say in the matter what they silly youtube peasants.Have a nice fucking day!
I like it. More modern and punchy.
I'm not a Ray fan, per se. I'm a Genesis fan...and that's it. I own all of their albums and I love all of them.
I guess you could really call me a Mike and Tony fan...that's what I am. And I trust their judgement, as to who they chose to bring into the band. That said, I really hope they do a new album soon, regardless of the lineup.
Patrick Swayze great on vocals on this one.
😄
@@carriejoint5970 XD
Yeah, I see Rutherford now. Thanks. He's a good singer. Just have difficulty calling it Genesis, as we both know the band's origin and evolution. Like Renaissance touring with only Annie Haslam as the lone member of the creative version of the band. She's doing Renaissance songs, but with a cover band. Just pining for the past.
Hey do you have to be so critical when someone else is singing? It is what it is and that's all. Mike and Tony were trying to revive a dying horse while keeping Genesis alive.
Hey, where's Genesis?!
very cool. thank you.
Unfortunately you can really hear the uneven velocity curve of the piano in the intro... makes it sound far less well played than it was!
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is my favorite Genesis album of all time. I think this version of Genesis does a very refreshing take on it. For once you could actually hear the bassline in the mix. For me the bass is 90% of the song.
Personally I feel that they should have soldiered on with Ray and given his chemistry a chance to develop with the band. The problem with the poor sales of their one and only album with him wasn't his singing, it was the lame songwriting. What did these guys need more millions of dollars for with those awful pop songs? They should go back to what they did best: writing great experimental progressive rock.
Kevin Sturges agreed!
Bass and piano. Can't overlook the piano!
J'adore ♥️♥️♥️
Saw this formation in Milan. Ray Wilson was a very good singer, so was the drummer. Can't say the same about the guitarist. Calling all station is sub standard
Perfect
I put this on to hate it. I was wrong, this is great. Excellent, very competent vocals.
i just think that Tony and Mike ARE Genesis and it is a shame that some people think they have no right to the name w/o Phil. I really could go on, but that's the jist of it.
Simply awesome! Best its been since 1975.
It was still Genesis because the core songwriters are still on stage. To some the front man makes the band. To some the songs make the band. Peter did both. Phil did some. Ray did a little I think. It does not matter. What matters is that this was just a small chapter that ended at the right time. Though I think Calling all Stations was fair at best (Because of 2 good songs Congo and Self Titled). Let's face it. This is no Peter and no Phil. Hey, it was worth a try. This version is not bad!!!
Love it.
I think I like Ray's version of this song the best. His voice suits the darker songs and the Peter Gabriel era of genesis. Some songs like invisible touch work ok with his voice but no where near as good as Phil
+MrDell292 AGREED MATE!!
Adam34...I could not agree more! You hit the nail on the head..I couldnt have said it any batter!!
(Altho, I do like some of the Collins era stuff.)
Ray sings this pretty well actually.
To be honest, whatever his flaws as a songwriter or anything else, he doesn't strike me as being particulary egotistical, and certainly I haven't read anything by any of the other members of Genesis that suggests he is. You ever see him do Uncle Ernie in "Tommy". It's a performance which certainly doesn't suggest much in the way of vanity.
there is a lot of back and forth comparisons but the bottom line is did you enjoy it?
thanks and good comment
I wouldn't have minded seeing this version on tour....I don't think Genesis had done a full version of this song since the mid 70's, right after Gabriel left.
At least the drummer is comfortable in his track pants.
First time I have seen this version play and I have to say...glad that is over and done with.
i can see where some Genesis fans would want a different name...but in either case, it is Mike and Tony's band. and this was a GREAT band (ie..the Wilson era) under any name.
Love this band playing their greatest song
“Don’t look at me,I’m not your kind….I’M RAEL”……..and I’m hovering like a fly…….waiting for the windshield on the freeway !!!
Should have named this lp "...And Then There Were Two..."
And two were just not enough...!
yes
Its not bad, i saw ray with my brother, he was ok, doing the genesis stuff, and there is 2 of genesis. He was ok.
Never heard of this. New too me. I thought it was b.s. till i saw Banks and Rutherford.
Many people close to the band say that Tony has always been the driving force musically. I think CAS offers a good deal of evidence for that, as does some of his solo work.
Killed me. Thanks!
They seem to gloss over the Ray Wilson stuff. I am sure there must be a full recording of one of the concerts they did. I saw them in Manchester and it was incredible.
It must’ve been a tough thing filling the shoes of Peter and Phil but he smokes!❤️
Interesting. Very interesting. But that's all. Tony's there, and Mike's there, but, sorry, it's not Genesis. It's a very competent Genesis cover band that happens to have two of the original members.
For the most part, I agree. But, I think it should have worked. I have been a fan for almost 30 years and I had no problem with accepting this lineup as Genesis. After all, they have been down to only two original members since 1975, anyway.
Awesome!
Thanks for posting this! It's not a complete train wreck, but it is fairly boring.
Hey Looks better and sounds better than the original artist. That is a very hard thing to do!!!!!!
nice
Hard act to follow, but he does really well. I think Kevin Gilbert did the best version, but that seems to have disappeared from UA-cam.
Difficult song to perform live ,I thought Phil's version on Seconds out was not a strong one.Ray appears quite solid on this one.
en el 99 se reunieron para grabar the carpet crawlers(new version) alli estaban los 5 : rutheford ,banks, collins, gabriel y el gran hackett...todo fue una ilusion, abrazos risas .....pero solo eso... solo una reunion.
After seeing what you call as favorites as videos and your comment about how great Ray Wilson is, I've come to the conclusion that you are in dire need of some help...
Single-spaced, no less!!
I stand by what I said.

correct
meant Dividing Line...small typo..my bad
Que font Tony Banks et Mike Rutherford dans un merdier pareil !!!
i only wanna see people in the band who WANT to be in the band.
Personally, I think the lineup should be Banks Rutherford Wilson and Thompson.
No, not much. I only have a Master's degree in Contemporary Music History...and I only did my 20-page thesis on the entire history of Genesis... on which I got an "A+".
Not trying to be argumentative- it's just an interesting discussion with different opinions- but I think a really great singer takes control of a song and makes it his- provided the material is a good match for him; provided he can relate to it.
I always thought Collins did a great job of making the Gabriel material his. Different, but it worked for me in a way that this doesn't. May be just my own carefully cultivated prejudices.
Well I was not kidding I really liked it, However I guess I might have been in error. Possibly the first time I saw Genesis live may have had Peter Gabriel singing. However I was young and probably under the influence. So I guess I think it is better than the numerous times I seen Phil Collins do it........
