Yeah "The Lamb" was something totally different than "Selling England By The Pound" and "Trick Of The Tail" it's like Peter teleported late 70's/ early 80's post punk from the future into that one double album in 1974. And nobody else in Genesis knew what was happening.

He and Peter Hammill, who especially in the 70s knew each other well and worked together, have a different approach to the same. Hammill's work was less accessible. I've known 2 people who said they loved Hammill but it was just too much to bear for them, the lyrics and the music. If had to explain the difference as I feel it, Hammill presents his views and stings, Gabriel guides through them and enlightens.

"The unmistakeable (sic), irreplaceable voice of the one true Genesis"... OK, that's the opinion of you and of those elite who call themselves "true Genesis fans while the others are just commercial fans". But many if not the majority view it differently, namely:
All eras of Genesis represent true Genesis. Both singers PG and PC had each raison d'être. Only Ray Wilson was a misunderstanding which showed the resonance of CAS album plus tour. But even if someone likes it as a part of Genesis we all have to deal with.

I think Peter lost a lot more... no keyboards, guitars or drums Peter put forward were ever progressive again... except a couple of tunes on his first album. No melodic rhythm changes anymore, no amazing guitar or drums or keyboards again. He wanted to be a center when once he was part of a greater. Peter never even tried to be produce complex music that could speak independently of his lyrics anymore. But it was what he wanted. But it was not even close to anything he ever did with the boys at his side. Not even close to close.

What's really amazing, is how unusual this song was for Peter's solo career. Unlike most people who leave a popular group and move on to a solo career, Peter built his career on a complete split with his past and not playing music from his time in Genesis, but entirely of post Genesis works. Yet, also was able to reach the level of popularity but still being different, not a pop rock musician but someone who ended up very popular, with well known songs without selling out his musical roots.

@@earthling2007 I agree that "shackles" is exaggerated and ingenerous, but it's clear from this video that in those years the desires of Peter were not reconcilable with those of the group, especially Steve's. Actually Genesis, under the steerage of Phil, were going as well to write groundbreaking stuff like "Abacab" or "Mama", but in much later times.

I saw this tour in NYC - the old Palladium/Academy of Music on 14th Street. After a couple of disappointing Gabriel gigs - including one in Central Park where he forgot the words to "Solsbury Hill" - this was just an incredible show, one of the best gigs I've ever been to, from start to finish.

What's unusual with this? Peter Gabriel solo, doing old Genesis material. He's built his solo career almost exclusively on his solo material. That says a lot right there. He's really had two separate outstanding careers.

The best thing to ever happen to Genesis and Peter Gabriel was their parting of ways. They both got bigger and improved after they separated.
Peter Gabriel always had a highly theatrical flair for his music, especially in his live performances. His performances were not confined to his music playing and singing; he added drama, stage presence, acting, costumes, props, lighting, and visual effects. This man is an actor, director, singer, and musician on the stage, and live performance on stage is his forte.

And Phil Collins wanted something completely different. He wanted to be a commercial pop star. He had to do it carefully though. On Genesis' first release without Peter Gabriel, Trick Of The Tail, Collins had to sound as much like Gabriel as possible.

All you naysayers are just being negative and don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. This is a wonderful version(even the keyboard intro), and it’s really a treat getting to hearGabriel do a Genesis tune at all. And lots of great bands and albums from the “punk era” hold up even better after all these years(note The Clash, Television, Talking Heads, & Richard Hell, to name just a few, all leaving great albums behind(which just get better as time goes by)for us and future generations to enjoy. So all you negative people just keep it to yourself. This is a wonderful version of a great song, and a real treat for the eyes and ears. So shut it! Thanks for reading...

Peter Gabriel, the man who gave Genesis the character of a super progressive rock group. His unmistakable voice won me over from the Foxtrot album, then through the great Selling England by the Pound and then The Lamb .... When Phill Collins took the voice, he sent the group to Pop. He commercialized it to the degree that I stopped following them. I was left with Gabriel's voice in my mind. The true Genesis was and will be with the man Peter Gabriel.

Just want to state that banks was the major factor for the sound going to pop. Some examples are how banks decided to not put the song "do the neurotic" in the invisible touch album because "it sounded too much like old genesis" or how collins wanted to play the whole supper's ready song in the invisible touch tour but banks thought it was a bad idea. So yeah it wasn't collins fault, and honestly you just have to listen to the lamb album to realize that the natural course was towards simpler songs, with or without peter.
