  • Quick update,
    Another perspective on weeds and,
The purpose of an organization (or garden) is what it does, not what it says it does, and you know what is important, because it gets measured and tracked.

I hear having weeds is better then having bare land those roots still help the soil.

      Worst situation, bare tilled soil
      Step up: Bare untilled soil
Step up: Covered untilled soil (mulched)
Step up: Untilled soil with living roots, none is bare
Step up: high diversity of living roots at all soil levels, with high diversity of soil life representing all tropic levels actively cycling nutrients, moisture, minerals, organic material.
There are many variations from Permaculture, to Will Bonsall's version of "Veganic" gardening, the work of Helen Athowe and many many others others. Plenty of research available for those willing to set preconceived notions aside and actually open their eyes. Heck, just abandon some land for 3-4 years, come back and see how nature dealt with it, and try to find bare ground and sick plants, not to mention how thick and diverse the plants are.

Have you tried using rice hulls as mulch? I sure recognize where you are! I live about 40 miles south Jonesboro.

We did that this year (look at the early videos). We got like 3 large "bales" of "PBRH" from Riceland (Parboiled Rice Hulls). they are a waste product which has been sold for some years mainly as an alternative to Vermiculite and/or Perlite for use in potting mixes. I wasn't really impressed vs well chipped wood or leaves, and have additional concerns about how much chemical is sprayed on them when growing (though what they gave us was OMRI certified) and even more so, the single use bags the bales come in. More trash for the landfill. Go to about 3:41 in this video. ua-cam.com/video/81A6VnO3JV4/v-deo.html
