  • The Washington Backcountry Discovery Route is a 575 mile mostly off road route stretching from the Canadian border in Northern Washington all the way to the border with Oregon at Stevenson, WA. This past July, several friends and I set out to ride the entire WABDR backwards (from Canada to Oregon) on our adventure motorcycles, motorcycle camping each night along the way. It was an amazing trip filled with drama and excitement. We started the journey with six riders and ended up finishing the WABDR with just two because of injuries and family emergencies. This epic, feature-length Washington BDR movie features each day of WABDR adventure motorcycle riding, each night of WABDR motocamping, and all the shenanigans in between.
If you're looking for an in-depth look at what it's like to ride a motorcycle on the Washington BDR or curious about WABDR difficulty, I've tried my best to capture the most important parts to allow you to be as prepared to ride the Washington BDR on a motorcycle as possible. Hopefully you enjoy this WABDR trip and maybe it'll inspire you to get out and ride the Washington Back Country Discovery Route on your own some day!

We did something very similar in southern Arizona. My brother and brother-in-law and nephew along with three other riders did a three day ride. Prior to starting out we had a couple of months to determine the route. We wanted to make. At the halfway point, we dug a hole and had a supply of fuel water and libations. When we uncovered the supplies, we noted that the gas had permeated the plastic water jugs. The water jug smelled like gas. That was a little rough; we camped that night. Along the way, we had one of our riders get a flat tire. So my buddy and I rode into Tucson and got it fixed. We attached it to my backpack which was really something. The next night we ended up in tombstone Arizona, where we spent the night. Then off to the area of Patagonia, Arizona. it was a terrific ride one that I will never forget

    Hey Dork,
Just a little tip when tying back your tent entrance flaps. Roll them inwards, that way if it rains the underside stays dry so no wet on the inside mate.
    Cheers

I feel like this is one of those Cheech and Chong movies when the officer asks, do you know how fast you’re going? The guys in the car say I don’t know maybe come up 60? The officer replies know you were going 10 mph.

You stopping during that one point in the jungle to just get out of your head is excellent and much appreciated! Also like to compliment you on the information you give nothing you ever say comes off as ignorant or over confident, just an honest and passionate rider. Really enjoy your videos and reviews!

I’m a local, and that’s actually one of my favorite camping spots on the lower Kern… you absolutely have no reason to enter the river right there lmao way to dramatize it though!
For those of you wondering, he can drive around the north side of those trees. If I get enough responses to this comment I’ll drive the 30 minutes from my house and go record the area around there to show you…

Kudos on the trip and the vid! I hope everything turned out alright for Mike and for your friend Travis' wife. As I watched through the first hour I began to wonder how riding the Husky on this trip would compare to some of the smaller bikes. You mentioned it briefly at the 1:15:45 mark. It would be interesting to me, and perhaps to others, to hear you opine in retrospect on video about how your experience would have differed if you were on the DRZ 400, KLR 650, Tenere 700, or some other bike you have experienced.

Great video and awesome ride!! I'd love to do it myself, but not on some big heavy adventure bike! All that weight and bulk is big disadvantage! - In handling and crashes! I've done lots trails like that on Nible MT bikes and light dirt bikes with out any problems or broken bones! Can't imagine throwing around a big bike on that stuff! Thats why they make dirt bikes as light as possible! Hope your friend makes a full recovery. Best, Michael M.

God that was amazing. I'd love to do a ride like that. I backpack camp on my 86 xl250r all the time, but broke my leg year n a half ago. I actually found your vids researching the Drz400, as I can't kickstart my 250 anymore... maybe in a yr or 2.
I would be totally capable of such a trip, except my fear of hieghts.. 🤣
Last time we drove much better condition roads in the mountains, i froze up, and the ol lady had to take over driving... lol
Great vid, loved it! Been watchin a few of your rides n guides etc.

It's obvious that you know what being a motorcyclist is all about... passion and following your heart! I eagerly await your next video & props to your post production team! BTW, if you could squeeze in a review of the previous gen KTM 1290SAR and the latest +'22, that would be very radd!
Not to nitpick, but @ 4:25, please engage your knees/legs before engaging your back/spine. you should extend the squat (straighten the knees) before you hinge @ the hip. This may save you some pain down the road.
    Keep up the great work!

The views look really cool. I own a Honda Fit, which is a very small car. A couple years ago, I drove up Pikes Peak and Mount Evans in Colorado. That was kind of nerve wracking in a car and I saw a lot of motorcycles there. Basically no guard rails and lots of hairpin turns and while both roads are paved, the summits are over 14,000 feet.

I lived in Rapid City SD for a few years and Belle Fourche SD for a few. Didnt have a mc at the time so never made it to Sturgis though. Loved driving in the Black Hills. Totally get the whole riding in the heat. I once rode my mc from dc to virginia beach down the delmarva penninsula for July 4th camping and it was so hot, i probably didnt drink enough water. My phone over heated and wouldnt chargd just as i was rolling into town where i would need to use it to find the site. But I turned it off to let it cool down and guessed my way til i was close and turned it on with just 2% juice. I was sooo glad to arrive at my friends site where he had a tent set up with ac. I know you probably needed to reserve your hotel ahead of time for the rally but i've lost so many paid hotel nights in my travels due to last minute changed plans of just not getting there before the end of the day that I don't pre reserve hotels anymore. I'll typically use my hotels app to find a local hotel from the last rest stop of the day. That has worked out much better for me. (No more lost hotel deposits) Be careful though if you are targeting little towns like newcastle with fewer than 3 local hotels on peak rally or holiday nights (having worked at a hotel in spearfish, i can tell you, hotels are typically booked a year ahead even with their rates doubled or even tripled for peak nights).

Nice video! Keep an eye on that AS mini fairing. I have been through 2 of them and both eventually cracked the metal around where the tower mounts to the fork. Both times it was the throttle side. Hopefully you experience better durability with your mini fairing. My theory is the metal cracks from vibration and at least one additional brace is needs to be engineered into the design. Rally Raid has endorsed the One Adventure Rally Tower, which may have the strength the AS mini fairing is missing. I switched to the Adventure Men Cave tower and have been happy with it. I love your DMD2 setup.

31:21 last October I rode the section North of Chelan all the way to the Gold Creek Road and then came back. As soon as i rounded that corner, I knew that was the place where the crash happened. That rut is hidden from view if it’s in the shade from the tree. It also sneaks up on you as you come around that corner.

You should do a video on the hand signals. Idk how you knew that dude had another behind him. I don't ride with others haha.

Awesome ride. Seems like a 900 is a lot of bike for that.
Could you do all of this in the Africa twin?

Loved this extended edition, I’m from BC Canada so the WABDR looks like an attractive option. I enjoyed your narration but curious to know how you get your voice so nicely isolated from the surrounding wind and road noise?

this was pretty awesome great video, im in CO on a himalayan ride the "technical" rocky cliff side stuff all the time it def makes your butthole pucker sometimes. do you or can you make a video of your gear and the essentials for moto camping? would be nice to see what gear works best as far as light weight, space in luggage, and the must have items are. thx for sharing your journey!

Would have liked to have known what happened to Mike’s bike. Was it left there on the side of the road? What is normally done to get it home?

In bear country best to pack a portable electric bear fence. A compact 2.4 Ibs for huge peace of mind.

I’d love to do this, but the other way, enter Canada and across to Alaska. And back to Canada, across to the east coast and down to New York.
This, or something like it is on my bucket list. Question is cost, ship my bike to the US from Australia or buy one there.

Great looking ride. "A deep hole of softness" and then "It lies to you" is this a personal encounter you're referring to, or are we talking about the track ? You guys have great mountain ride, I'm jealous.
    Are you on a 950 ? That motor has a great sound. LC8 ?

Cool video I love the dry side of Washington state the high country extra awesome 👍🏼. Were you guys riding thru logged out country or forest fire areas? Hard to know which is which if there was a difference.

What mirrors do you have on that bike. I like them... may change my stock Triumph ones.

Hey Dork, I’m a big fan of yours, I’ve watched most of your content and I’m over here in eastern Washington so not toooo far from you! I’m trying to start a motorcycle adventure channel not that dissimilar from yours, what sort of advice would you offer me? What would you do if you had to start over? Thanks in advance if you decide to graciously answer any of my questions 😂

Close to swapping out my current ride but would be keen to know how honest the transalp is? That is how accurate is the speedo, both my Africa and T7 were almost 10% out where as my F800GS was within a couple of % thanks for any feedback
