Lollar LW Bridge 6:57 Middle 7:12 Neck 7:26 Throbak Bridge 7:45 Middle 8:00 Neck 8:15 Lollar FB Bridge 8:35 Middle 8:50 Neck 9:05 I've had four I-35LCs and have tried the Low-Winds, Throbak 70's Select and SLE101 Plus in them. I currently have the SLE101 Plus in my I-35LC. If you're a rock player you'll love the SLE101 Plus. I'm more of a blues/jazz/roots guy and the SLE101 Plus has too much output and low mid presence for me, as evident in the video. I prefer the Lollar Low-Winds over it for my use case. Although, I'll be replacing them with a Ron Ellis Signature PAF set.
I can never decide if I like Lollar or Throbaks. The sound varies so much in videos. I think you need to hear in person. Never heard Firebird pu’s in these guitars before. Kind of different. Seem a bit brighter to me. Not bad since I think humbuckers are sometimes a bit dark sounding. Thought provoking comparison.
We love both the Lollars and the ThroBaks, though they do offer two very different takes on your classic PAF style. But you're correct, it's always tough to convey the subtle nuances in a UA-cam video compared to reality! The Firebird offers an almost single-coil-esque snap which seems to work well in naturally darker sounding guitars like semi-hollows.
The Throbacks are definitely sounding more PAF like. The Lollars have a voice of their own that give you a wider palette to play on. If you leave the tone on 10, they might sound too bright. I keep them between 3,5 to 6,5 to get the tones I need. They are more versatile than the Throbacks which are more vintage sounding if that's what you're lokking for.
There truly are distinctive differences. Especially in the bridge. Having said that, the Pelham Blue is by far the tastiest sounding to my ears. I'm definitely not a fan of. The Sunburst, and the Merlot sounds a bit muddy on the neck and middle, and very microphonic on the bridge.
I may be biased, but I love that Pelham Blue with Thro Bak pickups. Chris -- love your videos! You really bring out the best in these guitars
Great stuff Chris, makes me want to fly out to visit you guys! 😉
You're always welcome!
Nice sounds!! They all sound nice the firebird set has a really nice sparkle high end .
The Firebird set definitely has a unique character that I think works rather well with this guitar!
When he started playing the mid position I could already hear how tasty the bridge bridge was gonna be. That was niiiiice.

Great Comparison!
Thanks, Eric!
Pelham blue with the Throbaks for me.
Awesome vid! How would you personally describe the differences between the Throbaks and the Lollars, to your ears? Thanks!

Ron Ellis pickups for the win!
Pillar firebird for me.
They're a total sleeper pick! We dug them a lot.
