I want to thank everyone for the feedback and im glad i was able to help so many of you with this issue. At this point in time (as of 2017) we have gotten rid of the Equinox so there is no more videos of the vehicle itself. I did replace the exhaust manifold due to it splitting in two pieces (again no GM parts coverage), and it did begin to jump time due to the timing chain tensioner failing (another common issue with the 2.4). The body control module was failing and the AC compressor failed. Ive never liked GM and the reputation ive acquired with them from a tow truck drivers perspective aswell as my own has made me see how far down they've fallen from the muscle car days... Simply stating BUYER BEWARE! Hopefully you all have better luck than i have with GM and hopefully my future videos will help you again with other vehicles once i start posting again.
I have a question have you ever changed any of the pulley wheels on your vehicle I sometimes get a whining sound when I 1st fire up my equinox if I turned it off and restarted that sounds will go away I believe it's an idler pulley or attention or pulley bearing going bad, been like this for a year
The before the AC compressor went out it made a whine from the bearings but it wasnt long after that it completely went out. Yes ive changed pulleys but if it goes away after shutting it off it doesnt sound like a pulley to me. Id take it to get it checked out to be safe, i couldnt give a for sure answer to that one
TIP: I never heard the tapping, but it was the blend door actuator. After watching many videos (getting no help)I ran across yours. I removed the actuator, used pliers to open the door, opened the actuator turned it to the open position ,put the actuator back together, reinstalled it. Now I have heat. The hole process took less than 30 minutes. When I need the ac I will be purchasing a new actuator. Thank you so much for your video. My mechanic wanted 300 dollars to replace it. Now I can do it myself, thanks to you.
Thank you kindly, you helped me fix my 2015 equinox this way. The dealer wanted $2500 to fix my heat after they charged me $$500 plus labor for a new thermostat I didn’t need!
Wow i made it!!! That freaking Firestone ripped me off last time went back there they said wasnt the same problem they gave me diagnostics and that actuator is not even included in their diagnostics what a freaking thieves.. thank you so much i only spent $35 instead of hundreds of dollars again.. now i have to deal with the abs light😅
Oh the abs light is more than likely wheel bearings, I had a broken motor mount and the left when was way out of alignment and anything that causes the wheel to be out of place camber etc, will make that light come on ultra sensitive
I hear the tapping and I'm facing a huge bill for it on Monday. will check this out. if it works God thank you. If it don't then at least thanks for the effort. Good video. Short sweet and to the point.
Thanks for your video, after watching, an hour later and replacing the blend door the heat works again. Couple weeks ago a guy charged me $300 to replace the thermostat because it sits on the bottom of the engine and had to refill the coolant. So, at least I have new coolant for my $300. I have a 2011 GMC terrain with 130,000 miles. Part was $38.51
Yea same here. I replaced the thermostat myself but being a southern car that migrated to the northern U.S i thought the same thing since its used to heat more than cold weather.
Am I the only person who thinks GM needs to fire their engineering staff? After this equinox .From thier steering problems , transmission fluid, to thier brilliance at making everything into a 2 day adventure. I have had more headaches from this ,than any of the other 50 plus vehicles of have owned . Only 120 k miles. Never buy a Chevy again. Good thing I own 2 large tools boxes and 40 yrs at working on cars.
Thank you so much, I heard this noise but didn't mention it to my shop. They thought I had a blown head gasket, causing combustion gases to mix with coolant, and that was why my heat wasn't working. I wanted to make sure the heater core wasn't the issue, your video helped me find the issue two shops missed. I was able to accomplish this repair in a few hours in the dark.
I have 2014 equinox and It gave me lots of problems.window regulator needs to be changed and actuator needs to be changed and before I hade problems with this GM car I will never buy it again and thanks for ur help I learned something from you sir
Yeah, i changed that one a little over a year ago because of problems with my AC. Now, I have no heat, which someone at AAA mentioned that it may be that again. Im going to go get another and get my heat back on lol. Im glad i ran into your video! Thanks!
So I had the knocking sound and then replaced the actuator and all worked, now less then two years have passed and I am not getting hot air - just cold air.. do you think the actuator I installed is a bad one? Those parts are supposed to last!?
I purchased a new actuator, it’s working fine. However when I shut off the fan that door knob does not budge. You said you used a pair of pliers. I am afraid I might break something. Could not turn it with my hand it’s like stuck. What can I do. Any suggestions. Thx.
My daughters AC is not blowing at all. Recently tried some electrical troubleshooting and replaced fuses, blower motor still not working...is this same component for AC??
You're the best ... I have the same problem .. I'm going to find a friend who knows English well ... mine is limited ... but you're right and Nadia had hit the problem with my car ... I have an Equinox 2010.
hello brother. I have 2007 Pontiac torrent blowing lukewarm air so I changed the thermostat, water pump, coolant sensor, got it flush it and I only use the orange antifreeze my truck is not overheating at all but it's only blowing lukewarm air temperature air I had the heater cord changed few years back too. but the actuator doesn't make noises or sound like the one when you was tapping on the actuator. do you think it might be actually the actuator? because I spent way to much at this point.
I would try the cabin filters. They’re not an expensive part but they could be restricting air flow which could give you a low heat or cold situation. Usually the actuator would make the noise before it goes out but it could have just gone out without warning. For price sake I would try the cabin filter first since they’re usually less than $10 and relatively easy to change. Those are also behind the glove box so you could check the actuator while you’re in there.
Hi, I changed the actuator but when I put the new one in. I did not see that black knob in the hole. I don't know if it fell down in or what. Any thoughts on how to get it out. Thanks
They make a repair kit for the door when it fails my 2007 torrent was covered under a recall that was done in 2017. Apparently the door itself malfunctions so instead of tearing the dash apart they drill a hole with a clothes pin style actuator that goes on the door itself.
Could you please help me with more details on how that happened without tearing the dash apart. My 2016 equinox LTZ door blender part that connected to the actuator is broken. Thanks
So could a weak actuator cause the air to blow cold only, and the heat to not work? I'm having that problem currently, it looks like something I can replace myself.
Yes it can. Like i showed in the video, the actuator does work when its not connected to the blend door. If that isnt the issue there could be a block in the heater core or somewhere else in the coolant system. If coolant flow isnt the issue then there could be an electronic issue with the control panel.
@covertskyline thanks for this video i don’t have heat ether so i remplace the actuator today 8-18-2021 but still no heat in any vent you think it could be the thermostat on mine case or i just got a bad actuator i do not have any weird noises coming from the dash thank you in advanced
Well jeez louise!!! That's it!!! Best video I've seen for solving this problem! This LTZ HAS HAD ONE PROBLEM AFTER ANOTHER and its ridiculous that Chevy gets $40,000 for vehicles that have one problem after another, I'd take my 2000 Jimmy any day of the week over this Equinox LTZ any day of the week and the Jimmy had alot more perks on it than this thing. I wont buy another equinox, and I should have stuck with the GMC anyway.
I loved my 2000 Jimmy! The 4WD system was way better than these AWD systems of today. They were trucks. I did a lot of repairs on that truck. The rust finally got to it, as I don't like body work. Great engine as well. I have had two Equinox's, (2015, 2018) and both had bad piston rings and pistons. I miss the 2000.
Awesome mine does the same thing well it did before now I dont hear it anymore plus dont have heat ..no that the weather is cold ima have to cheeck it out asap thanks for the info..👍🙏
I changed that actuator last year on my 2011 GMC Terrain because the front vents stopped working. Now I have no heat and in the terrains im pretty sure there are 2 more, one on the driver and one in the centre. Would anyone know which one would control the heat?
The one on the right side behind the glove box is the only one that controls the hot/cold. Unless you have dual climate settings then I’m not entirely sure which one would be causing the issue. But the one I showed 100% controls the hot/cold. They go out so frequently I wouldn’t be surprised if it went out again on you.
Can this also cause the ac not to blow anything at all, i have this prob on my 2010 chevy equinox today but blower does turn on just no air coming from vents
Could be a few things. It could be the ac compressor or lack of refrigerant in the system, a fuse for the compressor, or a bad compressor clutch. Cuz the actuator would be on cold if it went out so u would have cold air.
Hey guys I wanted to ask to see if it is this. The other day the heater was working just fine and then i was driving and then it threw cold air all of sudden in the front driver and passenger side and back of the truck. No matter how high or low the setting was it still blew cold air. Would you think that my actuator went bad?
I wish i could say for sure but it sounds like either the thermostat is stuck open (it would be considered bad at that point), the actuator is bad or it could be low on coolant. Check simple stuff first b4 dumping money into it. Check the coolant first, then check the actuator second, last i would check the thermostat. If you're not mechanically inclined then take it to a shop. Thermostat is dead last due to possibly needing to pay someone to look at it.
Thanks Covert Skyline, I'm having the exact same problem on my 2011 Chevy Equinox. Hope to fix it this week and whenever the part comes in...if you hear that kinda loud tapping sound around the dash, you will know its a bad blend door actuator and the teeth are slipping in the gear and not working as it should. BTW, never heard of a blend door before when I started having this problem....I also replaced my thermostat thinking that would fix the problem...oh well.
@@douglasb.1238 changing the actuator fix you problem? I just change the actuator on mine today 8-18-21 with no luck still no heat on 2015 chevy equinox thank you in advanced
explain? are you saying the problem you have here is that your Vents blow, you can change from floor to in your face to defrost the front windshiled, that knob works. and the vents blow but no heat ? or are You saying that the air does not blow through the vents. I have air, I have no knocking, I do not have heat. it's just all of the sudden not working. I replaced the thermostat about 2 years ago, also the sensor, It was stuck OPEN but I still had heat when it warm up a Bit, it just took forever and never really got that hot because the fans were on and it was 25 degrees outside so the engine was never warming all the way up even if I let it sit idle. now I have no HEAT, blows fine, like the best a/c available. I burped the system for air bubbles, added coolant to make sure its 100% and still no heat, just cold blowing like crazy. The temp gauge is just under 1/2 pretty much all the time.
Yes. Because the hot and cold door runs vertical up-and-down. The cold is on the top therefore the door is always on the bottom giving nothing but cold air. With the actuator going bad there is no strength to lift the door to give the car heat.
There's a chance that the actuator completely went out and now you have no heat. There is electrical problems with a lot of GM products so therefore if the actuator itself is good you could have electrical problem not giving power to the blend door actuator.
@@Covert_skyline is there a fuse for those actuators somewhere besides the box under the hood on the battery side ? I can't find anything marked heater or whatever. I hate to go there though, it;s cold as can be and all. i'm in Idaho LOL. thanks for writing back so quick! wow
replaced ECT, thermostat, water pump and purged air from the system and still overheating. i noticed that no hot air blowing from dash but A/C ok. would a faulty actuator cause overheating alongside no heat from the dash? Thank you
Heat only comes from the cooling system so no heat would probably be from a heater core clogged up of clogged hose from dirty coolant or build up inside the cooling paths over the years. As far as the overheating is concerned, there may be something wrong with the head gasket that is not showing other signs. The best thing to do would be a block test from a reputable shop, to see if theres a gasket failure.
If this is from the same vehicle (equinox) there may be a failure in the instrument panel if all else checks out with the heat inside portion of the issue. There may be a power issue in the panel causing the switch (hot & cold) to not function.
@@Covert_skyline flushed all cooling system and water flowing thoroughly through out...air blend door working well, no sluggish movement; blower working fine. will try block test. Thanks.
Had this issue i replaced the actuator now a year later have the same problem, blend door works fine, all mode functions work correctly i have intermediate heat, blower wrks fine, no over heating issue

I'm not sure which pipes r freezing but if its th AC lines then that's normal to freeze. As far as the heat is concerned it's hard to tell without seeing the issue in person.
I'm glad I ran across your video, last week I was driving my 05 equinox and I noticed smoke was coming from my dashboard,I thought it was going to catch fire, and then later I had no heat or air, could it be actuator or the heater core?
@@anndavis8434It all depends on what the smell was. If it was an electrical smell it maybe your control panel. GM at a lot of electrical issues in the 2000 years. It may be the control panel but if you say you have no heat or air I would say something else burned up.
A few weeks before it happened I can smell like a can of spray paint smell and then when it started smoking it smell like a mixture of antifreeze and wires, thank you

now I have no HEAT, blows fine, like the best a/c available.
I know where a torrent is in a U pull it place, if it's the actuator I could go pull it from that car for cheap, it only has 50k on it, I am at 210,000 on this torrent.
Replace the one on the passenger side it controls heat and air fixed my problem
I know I'm late but thanks for the info and great video bud
Thanks very much! VERY HELPFUL INFORMATION.
My 2011 equinox is the biggest pile of garbage I’ve ever owned, and I’ve owned lots of garbage. It started turning to shit at about 55k miles.
Gm is garbage
GM= Garbage Manufacturing. The abbreviations don't lie
@@Covert_skyline Give me a 76 chevy 350 pu. No problem fixing it , duct tape ,bubble gum and a coat hanger; )
You could find parts anywhere...Never got stuck.
I feel your pain bro. I have one too, wife's car. I'm a Ford guy myself and they too have their fair share of problems as we all know...
Is this driver side or passenger?
Passenger
What does it mean when the pipes are freezing up and no heat is working it come on when it wants to
I'm not sure which pipes r freezing but if its th AC lines then that's normal to freeze.
A few weeks before it happened I can smell like a can of spray paint smell and then when it started smoking it smell like a mixture of antifreeze and wires, thank you
Thanks man. You save me a money and a time
Where is ur thermostat located
Is it that rectangle behind the radio?
What’s the name of that part please and thanks
Blend door actuator. Theres multiple actuators so make sure u get the one for the blend door
thanks
I'm on my 3rd actuator. It's really just a crap design, and the actuators aren't strong enough to last.
You were lucky it was just the actuator. A lot of the actuators were turning past their stop point and breaking the blend door requiring removal of the while dash to fix.
Guess we were lucky it was a crap actuator motor
I actually have that problem. Which I cannot see the gear or opening where the actuator goes into. Does that mean i will have to open the whole dashboard including steering wheel and ration and … please help me with some details if there are tools and what to remove and what not to get into there ? Thanks
@@khonavqary2372 I think if the break is where the actuator is attached to the blend door, you may be able to epoxy the broken part back on and then install a new actuator. You should be able to
access the actuator from the glove box or under that dash.
@@mikebrock1965 thank you I mistyped it. Actually the the blend door is completely inside the housing there is no way I Can see the part of the blend door that connects to the actuator at all. It must be broken inside.
Is there a way I can adjust through the hole where it gets connected to actuator ?
@@khonavqary2372 Its been about 6 years since I dealt with this so i may be remembering it wrong. It was also for a Saturn Vue. It could be that the blend door broke on the other side of the actuator. There is also a reset routine you have to go through to program the system when the actuator is replaced. I don't remember what it was.
That actuator looks like mine. Has the black burn mark around it
Yea that electronic motor burned up. Luckily it didnt catch fire but it definitely sounds like it got hot
Ok everyone needs to know i have changed that 3 times ,,but when you shut the car off stay in it for 10 mins the blend door will always close anyway then in the morning sometimes it will work sometimes not. I have at a stop sign turn my car on n off ant the heat will start blowing . I have heard from many DOORMAN brand sucks.. which is what all the auto part stores sell . Again this is my 3rd one it will only work a short time. N fail again .
Has anyone had any other actuators fail?? . The blend door is the one that fixed it heat but always not for long.
UPDATE I ORDERED AND FOUND GENUINE GM ACTUATOR ONLINE AND SO FAR IT WORKS AGAIN. THE AUTO PART STORES ONLY CARRY DOORMAN JUNK THAT FAILS
I have heard same from repair shops saying that even with GM certified replacements, the actuator fails again. Seems like the door itself is to heavy and makes the motor fail or teeth break regardless of build quality. I personally know someone thats had theirs replaced twice by the dealer since it was bought brand new (2014) and they want to keep a good "dealer serviced" record.
thnx
Can also be a broken blend door....not a fun fix
Funny how theyre suppose to "better" their shit every year specially if its the same generation.
Well I have the same issue in a 2017, the last model for this generation.
How many miles did your have when it started acting up
@@himois14 54k
Thanks man!
You're welcome.
U can see how weak it is while it's turning clicking go to Napa everyone else parts are weak it's a common problem all vehicles mostly American
Thnx yu!!
My equinox is garbage. It burns about 3 quarts of oil every 1500-2000 mile. I noticed that at around 86,000 miles. I will never own another equinox. They are garbage
Sucks on an 06 you have to remove the entire dash ..this is bullshit I just need fucking heat in my mother's car. Blend door was done least year and now I'm back chasing utube vids again fuuuuuck
