- In this video, I discuss why the Mercedes AMG 'V12 biturbo' M275 engine is a favourite among enthusiasts. The M275 was featured in the w220 S65, W215 CL65, R230 SL65, G65 as well as others. I start by going over some differences between the standard M275 engine and the AMG versions, then go into more detail on the AMG M275.

While the V12 biturbo engines will stay in the S600 for a little longer, it's sad to see that v12 engines will no longer be offered by AMG.
MB learned their lesson with the M120 V12s. Best engines engineering-wise, but with insufficient sales volume, the R&D cost nearly bankrupted the company.
That's why I will never get rid of my 2006 CL65

@@dannyz955 V12's gave Mercedes a kind of street cred that put a halo on everything else. These cars all cost over $200k and MB could've charged more. I don't see how they failed to earn enough money when we were willing to pay whatever. They're out of production now mostly because of emissions standards around the world.
Yes V12s always hit the soft spot for us enthusiasts, but we are still a small representation of the population. I think there was simply a loss of interest in V12 designs on MB's part over the years. One could say the M120 V12 was MB's most valiant effort in producing the finest high performance engine to fit their lineup, yet MB eventually shied away from this valiancy. Following the M120, the M137 was in every way a cost cut version of its predecessor, being SOHC and 3V per cylinder it made less power. The M275 was essentially a M137 with turbos introduced to address the power issue, and in that regard it was successful; but it was also in a sense a poison pill to the ingenuity of engine designers at MB, as they have realized, why bother pushing for better motor design and materials when they could just put thicker blocks and bigger turbos? And take this argument a little further, what could a V12 biturbo do that a 4.0 V8 biturbo could not, performance numbers wise? The general public did not care. They were happy enough as long as they get the badge, 0-60 number and plush interiors. But those that cared knew that some things were lost and could not be recovered. The smoothness, throttle response, the chordal voice that only belongs to an NA DOHC V12.
It's truly a shame that MB slacked off on their V12's starting from the M137, but it's probably not their fault. The emission standards can take a lot of blame for sure, but all emission standards could be overcome with enough R&D. So in the end, it's the general consumers who decide what type of cars gets produced, whether it's visceral driving machines, lean econoboxes, or tall riding family haulers. If Ferrari, Lambo and Aston can keep their V12 cult going, there could still be hope for these lofty engines yet.
Don’t worry! The AMG version might be dead but we at Brabus will keep it up as long as possible. Our 900hp V12 is now available in the new G-Class and will stay in the next generation S-Class as well.

Robert Homann No not really 😂 AMG and Pagani are currently in a fight over engines. I can’t really speak on this topic but trust me I know some really crazy things about Pagani that the public doesn’t know yet...

@@dannyz955 BMW is getting rid of it too. Maybe rolls royce will keep it but I'm not sure. Soon enough their only choice will be Aston Martin or make their own

I doubt Rolls will let go of V12s, as currently it uses nothing but. The BMW N74 should have more potential than the AMG M275/M158 because of DOHC. If only Pagani can get BMW to make a bespoke S74..
The 65 AMG has the best start-up sound ever! Such a great engine... Will be missed...
True that, and no sound recording device can make it justice. However, the 55K sounds way better the rest of the time.

I don’t miss it, I wake up to it every morning as long as there’s no snow or ice on the road, it’s an 07 kinda dated but it’s so comfortable and fun it’s worth what I’ve spent on it

Besides the problem of ignition coil pack problem; it is super strong.
The start sound always makes me happy.
If you shorten the period of oil change, it will serve you strong and beautiful.
Blessed to say I was able to drive one of the few 2020 S65 Final Editions in the USA before delivering it to its first owner. One of the best days of my Mercedes sales career.
great engine. I replaced the coil packs in my AMG S65 at 105,000 miles and it made a huge difference. I never get tired of hearing the initial engine startup
As a guy who grew up on NFS and one day dreamed of owning somthing special like a M275 motored car, your soundtrack choice is so spot on. Id listen to those songs just dreaming what it would be like. Very happy owner of a 06 CL65. One of my dream cars I thought would never happen!
I know this is quite the old comment but how has the reliability and maintenance been on your CL65? I've been looking pretty seriously into getting one of the V12 TT Mercs for awhile now. Seems like as long as the ABC system is maintained religiously the rest isn't too bad.
As others have said its mainly the coilpacks that gave me issues. Sold it almost 2 years ago now. Rear main was starting to leak. But previous owner had extensive work to turbos done since they can have heat issues that cause premature degradation. All that ill probably own another one just in a newer chassis. But all that aside, they are special. Pull the trigger, and dont be afraid to spend a bit extra on one well sorted. Its money u will spend either way. This way its more enjoyable and instantly usable. ABC was my last expense. Was expensive, but such a killer system

i picked up an 03 sl500 for $1200. 127k miles. needed the abc. I totally rebuilt everything that was worn out. next I am going for a v12

Right?! The most subtle yet brutal 4 door out there. I'm happy they stuffed that thing into a w220 for at least a year. BMW should have done that with the M5, a 2004 E39, with the V10 in it.

So buy a 2013 or newer V12, preferably an AMG 65 👍. I had an 2005 S600 M275, and everything you said to look out for is exactly correct!

I own a s65 amg 2007. Wonderful car. I raced a Bentley with the m279? And it walked my Ferrari 612. Both sounded glorious
Ridiculously smooth, ridiculously powerful, and ridiculously quiet. Also, ridiculously annoying to work on as well. Subframe has to be removed (R230) to change engine mounts. 🤦♂️

the few problems are the v/c gaskets, and the f cover gaskets...
By far my favorite powerplant that any automaker has ever offered. It's a shame to see it go. The v8 biturbo is nice, and more practical, but it just simply lacks the character of the v12 biturbo.

Knock the M137 all you want, but an elderly couple used to bring one in to our MB dealer with over 400k miles. They put a new engine in it when it wasn't financially sound at all. Loved it too much. The issues are solved rather easily.

One of the best v12 engines on the market...love our 05 w220 designo. Amazing power curve and reliability as well.
Didn’t you had any serious problem with the engine? I heard some people saying it has a ridiculous realibility for its power, and some other elses who claims that went bankrupt with it.
@@Gianni2002 with proper fluid service. Internally this engine is bulletproof. The ignition coil packs are very expensive when they fail. But if you change the spark plugs with oem ngks coil pack failure should only occur once in the cars life....unless you beat or tune it a and hot rod the car. Mechanically engine and trans very solid
