  • In this joyful talk, Eyoälha Baker speaks on the power of jumping for joy, and how it unified Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, one of Canada's poorest neighbourhoods.
Eyoälha Baker is a photographer and muralist. Born on Canada’s West Coast, Eyoälha (Eee-YO-Lah) means the wind in the Kwakwa’ka’wakw (Kwakiutl) language. Traveling and living around the world has given her a great appreciation for cultural differences and human similarities. She has a BFA from Concordia University, a Diploma in Media Resources, and Studied International Business Management. After running a small interior decorating business and helping start up a furnishing rental business, she decided to follow her passion as a photographer. Eyoälha is a passionate advocate for supporting people with barriers in the DTES.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Thanks (Asante sana) for inspiring me again. Currently, also a bit hungry (artistically and financially) and about to launch a comic book for boys who have experienced abuse. I miss the DTES, it's sense of community / hope and your wall of photographs. I often explain that there are "slums" in Canada to those here in Nairobi, Kenya, but that they are safe.

Thank you Karen for your beautiful and heartfelt words... "may photography and art change the world." So happy to hear the Jump for Joy Mural brought beauty to your life. I hope one day to share the joy in Nairobi, Kenya :) If I am able to make it there, I hope you will jump for joy with me! Following you now on insta. Thanks again for your words - keep on sharing your joy and your art!

Photography & dance are amazing. If I am back I'd love to jump for joy.
It is hard here somedays... public art is almost non-existent besides a really cool graffiti movement for peace, non-tribalism called #healthehoods. Yes! I started flamenco dancing again and let's create from different continents. This is my current awareness campaign for boys / men who live with trauma.
