  • Vancouver BC City Planner, Sandra James gives examples of how making a community more walkable, can change the social fabric of a neighborhood or a community.
    Sandy James is irrationally passionate about sustainably smart walkable communities. As a city planner for the City of Vancouver Sandy championed locally scaled neighborhood projects that virally became city policy in Vancouver and other cities. Working collaboratively with engineering staff Sandy developed the innovative 140 kilometer “green street” sustainable network of connected parks, streets and places where pedestrians have priority. Known as the “pickpocket of city hall” for her ability to find financing, Sandy was named Neighborhood Planner of the Year” by the Vancouver Sun newspaper for her work with communities. Sandy believes that promoting walkability is socially and morally the right thing to do, and chaired the international Walk 21 Conference in Vancouver in 2011. Sandy is a Director of Walk Metro Vancouver, which encourages best practices for the development of walkable places and spaces, creating communities we want to live in.

      I’ve always done more jump rope and weights and sprinting at times. But walking is the one thing I feel I’ve been missing. I’m getting older and that stuff is harder to sustain. But walking has given me real peace of mind and I can tell it’s helping my waistline.

    The best time of walking is between 4:00 am to 5:00 am. It really gives us the power of positive energy and mind blowing refreshment

      I walk 5:40am to 7:20am. 10,000-12,000 steps a day, six days a week. I walk in a fasted stomach. I lost 31 lbs in five quick months. I never i imagined i would weight 105lbs. I have three little kids i’m supposed to be bigger.

      I just got an office job, so walking is an absolute must now. I've been walking an hour and a half a day the last work week.

    So I got a treadmill desk for work and it changed my life. It's amazing, I started walking 10 miles a day (never thought I would walk that much consistently) I walked slowly between 1.7 - 2.5 mph. Not only did I have more energy and better mental clarity, but in the first 10 days I lost 10 lbs. Had no idea this would happen. I have lost over 25 lbs. since starting. And I've kept the weight off. But there are so many other benefits to walking. I even had clearer skin - its incredible. Walking at work changed my life. I enjoy work so much more now. Sitting down all day is the worst. Whatever you do just start walking more.

    When I had severe neuropathic pain and anxiety problems I would walk as often as I could . It did wonders . It helped relax me and alleviate my pain . I also lost 17 kgs within 6 months which I needed to loose .

    Lovely talk Ms. James. Thank you. So much inspiration for city planners, gardeners, and people who just want to improve their communities. I moved 3 years ago from the suburbs to a walkable downtown urban neighborhood and I will never go back to the burbs. What a difference to my physical and mental health, as well as feeling connected to my neighbors and community. It doesn't hurt that my city government understands the benefits of being pedestrian friendly. So many of the ideas in this video are being implemented all over here in Greenville, SC.

    I enjoyed hearing Sandra James' presentation very much. As fences at the fronts of properties fall and people find the benefits of creating a better community (rather than sanction themselves inside their individual homes), this exquisitely spoken talk is inspirimg!

    This talk is filled with wonderful information for the individual and collective benefits of pedestrian friendly neighborhoods, and proven ways to transform estranged residential areas into interactively thriving communities. I found the part about Nina Miller 12:57 particularly insightful. It illustrates a very effective means of strategically placing public facilities between bus stations, train stations and community stores. Excellent talk!

    Simply wonderful! Sandra brilliantly describes the social and economic benefits of walking and touches on the health effects. Shane O’ Mara, an Irish scientist, focuses on the physiological benefits of walking in his book “In Praise of Walking,” and rounds out the case for redesigning the urban and suburban environment to encourage more walking. Surely the health, economic and environmental benefits described by Sandra and Shane, make a compelling case for drastically rethinking urban planning.

    Everyone knows that walking is good for you. Few people know how to go about making walkability part of each community. This video by a practicing city planner gives solid examples of projects that any community can take on to make their community safer, more social, more neighborly and more walkable. The video also has great facts on how enhancing walkability in communities can lower the rates of clinical medical depression, markedly improve health, and increase profits for commercial businesses. A really good synopsis on why we need to encourage and plan for walkability. Excellent presentation, will use these examples in my practice. Looking forward to more from Sandra James.

    I gained so
    Much weight from driving for Uber and had a back issue last year and then the pandemic happend .
    I got a Golden Retriever and now we walk all the time and I quit the stress of having to pack up for the gym wich oils
    Make me feel slot of anxiety since it cost slot of money monthly as well on a budget ..
    Feels so
    Much better on my body and mind ..
    I plan on doing this untill I’m fit again as it caused me so much depression to weigh 275lbs almost 300 nearly and a huge caffiene addict I am not as dependent And feeling a lot more hopeful where I felt lost before I could hardly touch my feet or get out my door where I’m now down 20lbs nearly and feeling fine ..

    I've Been Walking regularly since the past couple of years, My father has done the same for his whole life, he is 74 and still walks everyday for an hour. There aren't many good videos on UA-cam regarding the benefits of walking and which covers a long term study. I'll tell you, once you get addicted to this exercise you will not like missing even a day.

      How long it would take to get addicted? I tried for many years and multiple times ...was consistent for more than 3 months still could not sustain .

      @@aparnad100 It has to be a part of your routine and also fit in your routine. I just get an urge to walk in the evening as my evenings are free and I don't like sitting at home doing nothing, so I go out for a 40 min walk.
      It becomes a habit after trying multiple times and it may take longer than 3 months to form a habit for some people, for example it can even take more than 250 days to form a habit for some people as I read in a book called: Atomic Habits.
      So be patient and I would recommend listening to an audiobook while walking or a UA-cam podcast while walking, this would enforce your walking habit because whenever you would want to listen to your book, you would get the urge to walk with it. So combine these two and you will be finishing books in no time and walking daily as well. Otherwise you can go the hard way and just persist by walking without any phone or distractions like many people do but I am telling you what I do.

    I’m glad I found this video. I was hoping after the pandemic that walking would lose its stigma. So many good benefits and helps people go back to what works for us. Being around nature and getting time to process our thoughts.

    I make it my target to compensate 1.5 times my monthly car mileage emissions through walking. I'm 68, I've had a benign cerebral tumor. I feel responsible & fit. That's my picture in my avatar.

    I walked to school every day bad weather or nott in the winter my aunt would ask my dad to take us to school he did just once ten years of walking to school and I lived through it I'm still walking

    in the UK we are lucky in the fact that all our streets have pavements (the English word for sidewalks)

      We have pavements. There is street pavement for vehicles and sidewalk pavement for pedestrians.

    Walking is what we're designed to do by evolution. Everybody focuses on our big brains as THE thing we do better than other animals, but it's one of two things. The other is walking. A human being can outwalk any animal on the planet. We hunted animals to extinction merely by walking after them until they were too exhausted to run anymore. We don't have big sharp teeth or big sharp claws or enough muscle to rip someone's arm off like a great ape, but we can walk circles around every species on the planet.

    That’s the part I like about walking in my neighborhood I don’t have to see people. I don’t want to see anybody or talk to anybody. I have my audio plugged in and I’m looking at the trees and the grass and the flowers. I don’t want to be interrupted by somebody.

    I started walking at least 15000 (about 12 km) steps per day after I read that hunter gatherers are estimated to have had that average. I wasn't going to be that decadent modern human where I could help it.

    Don’t underestimate thrift shops. I bought a pair of Fila tennis shoes for 10 bucks. Brand new they look like they may have been worn once. They fit me and feels so good. I walk in them all the time.

    Walking on empty stomach first thing in. Morning known to lower cholesterol and walking at end of day after dinner lowers insulin

      I walk backwards especially when walking down a steep hill When I can. Knees hurt less. Dr Beth mentions it.

      No, you should be active! If you are underweight, then slowly be more and more active and eat a bit more so that you can be active. It is 100% better to eat more so you can be fit than just staying still so you don't have to worry about weight.

    Lets be honest i really dont understand why this person who is Grossly overweight and looks very unhealthy so its clear that this speaker gets zero exercise and no walking.PEOPLE LISTEN TO PEOPLE WHO LOOK AS HEALTHY AS THEY PROCLAIN TO BE.

      I am going to directly address your comments. It is very clear you did not listen to this TEDX talk. It is not about me. It is about the extraordinary things that I saw neighbourhoods do to advance walking and in so doing, build community. My airplane luggage did not arrive and I was very thankful to have the clothes lent to me. I agree they don't fit. But your comments negate any woman that is asked to speak at TEDX (and you are asked, you don't just show up) and says tons about you. You did not listen to this TEDX talk. You cheapen any woman that has a valuable message, and you cheapen yourself. It is people making comments like yours that make girls and women feel less about themselves. That is never okay, and can deeply impact people. I work to make people and communities whole, not to cut them down.
