  • Defending a fast smash in padel can be about resisting the instinct to block it and run towards the oncoming ball. It can be unnatural at first, but once you get used to the idea that the ball will bounce back to you, it can often lead to you taking advantage in the point.

    Thanks Sandy. Good clear advice once again. I like your reference to "visual cues".

    Can you make a video about those visual cues, so we can know where the ball will go after it hits the back glass (will it stay low, will it move to the side,...). Ideally with examples to 'read' your opponent better...

    Good stuff ! Can I request a video on attacking the ball when it bounces up high on the back glass (both forhand and backhand) ? And how to defend against it ? (I have some trouble when they play a good shot at your feet, especially when it has some pace, making the block volley quite hard).

      Stijn Horsten sure, a video on the Bajada is a good idea and how to block it...if it’s got to your feet it sounds like you aren’t close enough to the net...or if they hit that ball too fast for you to volley you don’t need to come forward straight away...

    Moving forward close to the side-glass is a really good tip. If you're avoiding a smash with your body and then have to move forward, you're likely to be too late. There's one type of smash that i found impossible to defend. A hard flat smash that bounces a foot from the back glass and then doesn't come up from the ground.

      Another option if you find yourself too central is to run forward and jump, allowing the ball to pass underneath you while moving forward...The hard flat smash is a risky one from them and difficult to defend, the best option is the try to move forward and turn quickly to react. That is one of the toughest smashes to defend.

    A question; If I start to run forward as a reaction to visual clues it's fairly easy for my opponent to just fake the smash and then hit a soft, slow ball that I'll never catch, isn't it? I guess that's maybe exclusive to singles... Great video as always, Sandy.

      This is often for a higher level. It is really difficult to hit a good fake smash where it is disguised until the last moment. Often the fake becomes obvious and you can change direction...

      @@ThePadelSchool I find my opponent often aiming for me while I run to the side and the net.Because I am halfway by the time they smash, I really have almost no time to react to the smash aimed at my legs. How to avoid it?

      @johannest3628 In my modest experience, that's where your partner comes in: when one of you is starting to run forward to "catch" the smash, the other should have a sharp eye on covering any soft and slow balls. Easier said than done, I must say... 😅

    Should both players run up in preparation or do you leave it to your partner if you see them running up to the net to defend?

      Underground Pianist great question. Usually if you are sure the player will hit a topspin smash and they can hit it well you’d both run. But if they can disguise their smash and think the fake smash is an option, one player would stay back.

    Any tips for defending the kicksmash against the side fence?

    • @ThePadelSchool
      @ThePadelSchool  3 роки тому

      Well, when you see them hitting kick/aggressive smash, you should be moving forward, so if they hit towards the fence either try to block it with a volley before the fence or give yourself space to react and play it after...
