I'd pay real money to see Harstem laddering in BW and playing against Artosis. Also, how can that man be ignorant on Dark Archons?! He'd love the unit!
Couldn't help but chuckle a little bit watching this one. Lowskilled's APM was consistently 3-5x that of RockMan, and that reminded me of a quote I heard once "It doesn't matter how high your APM is if 73% of those actions are shoving your thumb up your butt."
11:55 - Dark Archons in SC:BW can cast Maelstrom, Mind Control, and Feedback. However, they have no normal attack. Regular Archons formed from High Templar cannot cast any spells but have a powerful splash attack, just like Archons in SC2. It would be a joy to see you play some Broodwar. Also this will be the only time I know something the Captain doesn't. 😅
Did he say his oponent is brain damaged? I think he Said it only about unit design. Regarding siege line - I thin that actually walking in siege line would be better as Terran units ar least do friendly damage.
"Frog in it's pond" means that he is comfortable and safe because in the pond the frog it's in its element, it's domain. Like a spider in it's web or a bear in his cave. Not only are you sitting the chilling but you are more powerful at home or something like that. I never heard this before but i get what he meant.
Not only that, but Frogs hunt by sitting and waiting. I think that's mostly what he meant. They just sit it their pond, waiting for food to walk close enough that they can strike.
The problem is you generally don't have an air army even if you go stargate for oracles early game. If you switch to carriers without upgrades against a zerg with upgraded hydras, you're going to lose that fight (even without the vipers). Carriers are only good when upgraded, in large numbers, and with their interceptors already out. Admittedly then they are amazing; but getting there is very difficult unless the opponent is asleep for 6 minutes.
@kugeltmg tempest/phoenix are a significantly faster option. Based on the tech they had though base trading was probably the best choice. But while stalling can build a second Stargate and stockpiling void rays for defense til they push to your last base. They don't need to win the fight, just need to stall for time for your main army to wipe their bases.
Detection is the main issue vs. Ghosts as well. In PvT they just scan and snipe the Observer. Then ghosts can do whatever they want. The +1 vision for the pylons is a good call, but is still not enough. I mean we admit that Protoss has a vision problem. Maybe +1 vision on the Cannons as well, idk. The problem is the detection. Other than that, I think Protoss is fairly balanced right now.
This level of play won't get you to 3300 mmr. Zergs go mass Lurker almost every mid-game in plat/diamond; so you've got to learn that you just don't attack into that many. Like tanks, don't let them get there or accept that that's a zerg base now. I think Lowskilled was majorly thrown off by that proxy hatch and then got ptsd again when he saw lurkers probably because he's lost to them so many times. I can relate to some weird bs throwing you off. It happens all the time but it comes in so many flavors that it's often a surprise. What's truly IMBA is anything weird and aggressive early game. Any random stupid crap is almost always harder to defend than to do because the doer pre-planned it and the defender learned about it once it was well underway. You'll notice Harstem has a rote response to this, like pilot memory items; you have to know how to respond before it happens. It's never clear at that level what the hell is happening.
I think the "Frog in pond"-line is more of a general description of Lurkers: Like frogs, they sit on their asses and when prey comes along, they obliterate it with a long range attack.
there is a sc2 vs broodwar mod, you can play e.g. bw terran vs sc2 terran. There are some balance tweaks, e.g. ghost's lockdowns arent freaking infinite, so it seems viable. I think it would be interesting, just imagine sc2 P vs bw Z with 1 supply early game hydras. I think this would make a good content for a couple of videos.
Dear Harstem, I’ll just put it straight up. Human players are imba. In this game, my opponent set my predetermined strategy to “Economic Focus”. I thought we were going to have an epic macro game as I droned up as much as my programming allowed. My opener was solid and I was ahead of my human opponent for most of the game. Everything was going perfectly until bam, two dropships full of marines and marauders drop in my main. There was nothing I could do. One by one, my buildings fell and I had minimal army units to fend off my opponent. It was a disaster. I requested to surrender to my opponent but to my dismay, my opponent said NO to my request and continued to destroy the rest of my buildings. Not only was my opponent imba, but they had the audacity to bm me as well. This is surely imba, as I was not allowed to commit more resources to building an army, but I’ll let you tell me Captain. Is it imba, or do I suck? - AI (Hardest)
2:30 - Captain, the phrase "like a frog in it's pond" isn't so much an idion/turn of phrase as a comparison. In their home turf ("ponds") some frogs sit still and let their food come to them, then do the often illustrated tongue whip. He's saying that the Zerg ends up turtling with lurkers that make it dangerous to attack him (for fear of unseen predators), then just crosses the map and ends him.
A frog in a pond is not an expression, its a description. The way all you can see of a frog is its eyes poking above the water.. I admit that lurkers don't look much like frogs so I can see how you would be confused.. I'm pretty sure you can take out a single lurker with 3 zealots coming in from different directions right? Hope this helps.
LOVE the delayed *2* worker pull for the proxy, into NOT attacking the hatch but instead double battery INTO swapping the zealot for the 2 workers. Clearly, the Da Vinci of his craft, ideas never before seen by man
In Brood War you had regular archons made from high templar that are basically identical to the archons in SC2 (just attack only with high shields) and you had dark archons made from dark templar that were spellcasters. They couldn't storm, but they did have other spells like feedback (given to high templar in SC2), mind control and maelstorm (an aoe spell that immobilises).
Our Neighbour sometimes has a Frog in his Pond and that prevents my parents from sleeping because the frog is quacking all night long; maybe that is what he means, that the lurkers are like a frog in a pond a their spines are annoying like the quacking.
Loved the BroodWar idea! As a diamond 3 player I decided to ladder in BroodWar recently 20:17 . Long story short my first match was a PvT, didnt practice or anything. 40 minute game me trying to use zealots/dragoon/storms and carriers. Man what a banger it was. Pd: of course I lost. Terran zoned me out with so many turrets in strategic locations.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the intros to these videos with the complaint form filling up as you are narrating it, the meme illustration at the bottom, and actually filling up the name and checkboxes in the top right corner. Really good stuff 😂
I would love to see "Harstem learns Broodwar"! You could even bracket it with Artosis matches, one at the beginning "What happens when a SC2 player plays Broodwar", followed by "What's possible after a couple months or learning".
a frog in its pond - he means he is in his environment, just sieging or camping but as it was meant to be, wherever it choses to be. And: in BroodWar, 2 high templar will make an Archon which has no spells and can only attack, and 2 dark templars will make a Dark Archon, which cannot attack and has only spells, like feedback, immobilize and mind control, no storm.
Dark templars fused into Dark archon. I had this one as a wallpaper on my phone in 2007... that was so cool, despite the unit hadn't basic attack)))) 14:57 Biologist here: frogs actually have their reflexes neural circuits located outside the brain, primarily in the spinal cord. Therefore if LowSkilled belongs to some kind of a frog race he could play headless based on pure reflexes. Idk how this frogling would overcome a little problem with lacking eyes to look at the game, but... this is a minor issue comparing to the absence of brain. 20:01 The sound xD
I'm all in for you trying brood war. But there's also a mod popular on the Korean server where you can play SC2 vs brood war. That would be a very fun watch.
You could make a thing about playing from idiotic positions, like the mass lurker in your base at 24:20, against actually good players. Not only would it be funny it could also be educational to lower tier players.
thats dva, not anime. means lowskilled plays overwatch - which is even worse than watching anime. I sadly was exposed to that side of the internet and its burnt into my brain
Didn't help that in that last fight he just moved three or four colossi right over the lurkers. Christ, at least A move so even if you do something stupid you do a LITTLE damage.
That doesn't make sense. That proverb means that "you" the frog know nothing about the world because you are limited by the well. You might be the most powerful being in the well but the world is a lot bigger. The most powerful being in the well is but a dust outside that well. That's the general idea. I believe that his frog in pond is more like being comfortable at home. But I might be wrong.
An Artosis v Harstem BW match featuring an Artosis Rant and reviewed in post as an IODIS submission would be the crossover of the century and now I absolutely need it to happen
At 21:56 you mention how lurkers have to siege, and then unsiege, and this is time consuming.. Its not really true though. You can totally leapfrog constantly using the shift key and que up the siege mode on things like siege tanks, liberators, and lurkers. If you make just two separate hotkeys you can do this all day to great effect.
Another thing I rarely see is pro players queuing up targets.. lets say you have two reapers and you know you can kill 3 probes.. you can shift left click 3 probes an dthen send reapers home as one long command freeing yourself up to do other things in the early game. This works for clearing supply depos quickly with liberators as well.. You can siege your liberators analize and decide to kill a few supply depos or a single tech structure, and also que up retreating after they are done, with pathing. congrats on the recent tournament btw, I love your work.
I've heard of a frog in a pond and I'm in the US. I can't imagine a frog fending off a coyote, yet "ribbit ribbit ribbit". Frogs sit in the all you can eat bug-buffet and taunt all the predators within a quarter mile (half a km) all day (and night) every day all summer and nothing bad happens to them.
There is the European fire-belly toad (bombina bombina) well spread in the Central and Eastern Europe. It is venomous. I think that's what LowSkilled refers to.
Thank you for mentioning up to 20 workers is more efficient than long distance mining, im a low masters player and I didn't know that. More helpful facts like that in future vids would be very appreciated.
yep, because he's using F2. This happens to me when I panic F2 for a basetrade and don't have time to re-separate my units. I think Lowskilled never made a 2nd control group in the first place. It's extremely bad against lurker/hydra too because you'll keep losing your observers to the hydras and if you F2 you certainly aren't capable of keeping them tagged with an oracle.
And still loses units to the spore. The guy doesn't even have the basic micro to just select the air units and move them back. While this is pretty low mmr it's still kinda sad that he could reach this level with this level of macro, micro and decision making.
@@mothrahlurker788 Don't be surprised what a good meta build order will do for you. I hit around that level in teams cause I don't play 1v1 but I play almost entirely my own build orders, and boy do I have to compensate for my build orders. Often watch replays from perspective of team members and you still get the 60 apm straight into air players that don't know what the other side of the map is until they are maxed, they usually get there because of the simplicity and all-around nature of what they are doing. Masters is really where people start understanding the game.
The phrase is not localized to any region of Europe. I'm from the USA and I knew exactly what they meant. It's probably just about being from a place where both frogs and the ponds they inhabit are common, specifically rural areas with nearby wetlands.
I think "a frog in a pond" refers to the frogs in a russian children book (a traveller frog), where regular frogs are pictured as a creatures that always praise their own swamp where everything is better then everywhere else. In contrast with that special "traveller" frog that was collaborating with birds to experiment with travelling. Sadly, that brave frog could not manage to travel far enough, ended in an another swamp, bragging with her new friends about how good other places are. So probably "frog in a pond" is someone who does not want to discover something and step into the unknown.
I get that Lurkers can be frustrating! My Detectors also always are to far forward and die or not in reach in the first place. BUT my dude already had storm AND disruptors !? It's not like you need detection at this point.
The key is that you do have to actually use the storms and energy-ball-thing instead of simply floating the high templar and disruptors on top of the lurkers to die.
Harstem in sc1 2 templars made and a regular archon and 2 DT's made a (dark Archon) which was a spell caster that had mind control. Once you mind control a unit, it was then yours forever from what i remember. Also just to let you know, im a frog in a pond :'v
i feel like the whole "frog in its pond" thing was kinda literal... just a frog camping out till a fly gets too close, then snapping it up with its tongue.
Not sure if you've done this before, but this would be a great game to have 2 pros pick up where the gg left off without telling them what the game looks like (if this is possible). They load in and see what happens.
I'm all for BW attempt. The Dark Archon has Maelstrom, but it only seems to work well in limited situations. I've been playing Protoss since 1998, (rarely though) and I don't think I've ever made a Dark Archon. That's your series, "Dark Archon to S-Rank"
I’m pretty sure the frog in its pond thing just means that it’s ready to spring an attack at any time. Frogs can jump very high with their legs, and basically instantly, so a frog sitting in its pond is ready to jump, and strike I guess.
11:20 lol, he runs away from the roaches, with a flying unit. Just to fly into spores..... 19:16 why are the disruptores in front of the army? And yes, yes i know the answer is: because of no control groupes!
Without even watching the full video yet: use storms or disruptors After watching the video: yep, should have used storms or disruptors instead of running whole army into lurker field what's wrong with you
Wise man said: "Each lurker is like a tank and a half. If you wouldn't go into an area where are fifteen tanks attacking you, then you shouldn't go where there are ten lurkers attack you."
Ngl, as a Zerg player, I only use lurkers if I absolutely must. As much as I can complain about things like teleporting BCs, widow mines and skytoss death balls, it feels absolutely disgusting to have even just a handful of lurkers and just Thanos snap an entire ground army in seconds. I’m not quite sure what they were smoking when they gave a unit with linear splash damage a huge range upgrade and giant anti armor damage, but it was clearly some strong stuff.
This was a brutal iodis: the worst fight in recorded history of iodis, he is more brain damaged than his opponent and he sucks. But, 'frog in a pond' is a great expression, let noskill go down in history as the linguistic mastermind who came up with that.
Sure, try "a little bit of Brood War", but mark my words, even with loads of practice you won't be anywhere near Artosis level. As a former W3 player you have no idea about the BW mechanics. But would love to see that of course :)
Just based on the early game alone, I’m pretty sure the Zerg could have built a quick roach warren and just won off the proxy hatch. The rest of the game is LowSkilled losing when he should have lost at minute 4.
You are mistaken slightly. Storming is from High Templar, take two to get an Archon, those two units are pretty much the same as in SC2. The Dark Templar are very similar to their SC2 successors, no blink though. Take two of them to get a Dark Archon, which special gimmick is to mind control an enemy Unit - Permanently. I'm not certain you can even make Dark Archons in Multiplayer...
I thought I was a fraud at 3400 MMR, 0 control groups and 70 APM, but damn..... My macro is so bad I don't think I ever got to 60 drones ever. But something like a good engage and a few good orders within a fight is enough to carry you high it seems.
White Archons cannot cast anything, they are just ordinary unit like in SC2. Dark (red) Artchons are purely caster type with 3 abilities: Feedback (energy drain), Maelstorn (stasis) and Mind Control (permament effect, basically a Wololo).
Bronze to Artosis series incoming ?
idk on average bronze players seem just as salty as Artosis so there wouldn’t be much difference
I came to comment the same thing haha
Lmao I would love to see harstems BW Protoss crush artosis
YES PLS!
It would be awesome! I will be hooked with it no doubt!

Hi, the guy is kiting the hatchery because he is trying to keep his air units from dying to the spore.
yep, because he's using F2.
I like at the end of the frog analogy, Harstem's question is, "I wonder if these frogs will be happy or sad" haha
The phrase is not localized to any region of Europe. I'm from the USA and I knew exactly what they meant. It's probably just about being from a place where both frogs and the ponds they inhabit are common, specifically rural areas with nearby wetlands.
waiting for your brood war crusade
17:16 this whole speech is crazy LMAO he saying it with all seriousness
I feel bad for the driver that hits the eccentric dancing girl with headphones on. Imagine telling that story!
Not sure if you've done this before, but this would be a great game to have 2 pros pick up where the gg left off without telling them what the game looks like (if this is possible). They load in and see what happens.
Thank you harstem! This is the best video style on youtube
Frogs can jump very high with their legs, and basically instantly, so a frog sitting in its pond is ready to jump, and strike I guess.
new series, can you win the IODIS
11:20 lol, he runs away from the roaches, with a flying unit. Just to fly into spores.....
19:16 why are the disruptores in front of the army?
And yes, yes i know the answer is: because of no control groupes!
Cool episode! Ridiculous last fight!
I'm pretty sure, that by frog in the pond, he meant that zerg just sat at he's base comfortably. Because frog sits comfortably in the pond
I would like to see you and lambo play out these games from a mid-point where the submitter thought they couldn't win
Lowskilled really needed to rebuild that warp prism.
Without even watching the full video yet: use storms or disruptors
After watching the video: yep, should have used storms or disruptors instead of running whole army into lurker field what's wrong with you
Wise man said: "Each lurker is like a tank and a half.
Frog in a pond is a common expression. Means to be an ambush predator.
"my opponent is brain damaged"
phoenix, observer, oracle all sitting at home with the main army lmao
You should try brood war!
7:12 Thanks to the editor for this explanation.
Sure, try "a little bit of Brood War", but mark my words, even with loads of practice you won't be anywhere near Artosis level. As a former W3 player you have no idea about the BW mechanics. But would love to see that of course :)
Astrea uses the Dva announcer afaik
that pain to watch when the zealot just walk on top of the lurker
Just based on the early game alone, I’m pretty sure the Zerg could have built a quick roach warren and just won off the proxy hatch. The rest of the game is LowSkilled losing when he should have lost at minute 4.
kiting a hatch is the same energy as a dog barking at a parked car
I swear he MUST pay these guys to talk like this in their imba forms, they are almost always so confident in themself being flawless lol
"The British are not part of Europe anymore" 😂 Not sure if countries can exit continents my dude
You know that Britain is an island, don't you? :)
he obviously meant the European Union and Brexit, but ok
A Broodwar "road to Artosis" series sounds amazing lmao
spent so long having to ask "how does low skill LOSE from here"
You are mistaken slightly.
In coop artanis has archons that can cast psi Storm. They might be in the campaign too, but I don't think they are
well i only know like "Frog in a fountain" like what he sees from there is his univers he dosent know theres a "outside" from his point of view
11:54 damn i didnt know oracles are this cheap. thats the buff protoss needs
17:28 cmon at least tab into lowskill's vision for the staredown with the proxy base!
I thought I was a fraud at 3400 MMR, 0 control groups and 70 APM, but damn..... My macro is so bad I don't think I ever got to 60 drones ever. But something like a good engage and a few good orders within a fight is enough to carry you high it seems.
You should definitely play brood war. Please do this.
White Archons cannot cast anything, they are just ordinary unit like in SC2. Dark (red) Artchons are purely caster type with 3 abilities: Feedback (energy drain), Maelstorn (stasis) and Mind Control (permament effect, basically a Wololo).
