Did anybody play the OG or know of this series? I'm honestly quite interested now, demo is worth a shot if you're into old school turn based RPG's!

It's a similar case as with Trials of Mana (maybe a stronger one) where the remake is quite different from the original in a lot of small ways. In this case the combat system is quite different. There wasn't such a huge obvious emphasis on weaknesses, no overdrive mechanic at all, you would decide all 5 party members actions at once and then all battlers act in speed order instead of having a clear timeline. There's other small differences but the bulk of everything else is essentially about the same.
It's a remake in its purest form, i.e they took the spirit of the original and re-made it as if it was a 2024 JRPG release which is essentially what they did with Trials of Mana a few years ago as well.
I tried theSaGa series several times but this remake is so much better across the board. The problem with SaGa is that they aged quite poorly and all deserve to have such remakes to be really amazing games. They used to have very little information displayed to the player, a lot of obscure mechanics and very clunky menus. It's really rough to get into it nowadays.

@@sombrego2260 Interesting, with it's fairly unique mechanics I assumed a lot of them had derived from the OG in some way. I tried to not look too much up except the basics on wiki cause I didn't wanna spoil anything for myself incase I do get time to play it later on.
Even to someone who grew up with this old RPG's, I can't go back and play most of them now, you're right, they've aged too poorly.
That sounds even better than, I knew it was a fair remake but then to hear that makes me really happy, just cause it means they really put a few years probably into this remake, so they must have a very passionate team doing this for such an old game.
I'll be curious to here from people who have played it then and see what the big differences are if there is for story, locations, set pieces etc in the final product on release.

@@sombrego2260the sparking moves are no longer random, which is bad. In this game, any characters doing the same thing will eventually get the same new moves in the same order, which did not happen in og, i.e., if you have Bear, James Therese, and Leon constantly do martial arts, these characters will get "Way to focus" first, followed by "Kick", and then 'Sobat'. (Forget Gerard as he is difficult to spark anything initially). In og there is no telling which moves you will get.
There is also lightbulb symbols telling you which attacks you use are more likely to spark. You can disable this though.

This game serves as a foundation of today's RPG games. Back in 1993 there were few or no RPG with freeform scenario, no walking in world map, fast travel, glimmers, mobs get stronger the more encounters you have, etc. The weak point was due to freeform scenario, the storylines of Saga series pale in comparison with linear RPG. RS2 was probably the best in that it incorporated linear story with freeform scenario. Among all Sagas I played RS2 was the best in terms of story.

It's funny how I've barely ever heard it being mentioned over the decades compared to other RPG series, so I love to listen to it! Seems a lot of people are really looking forward to this

@@MyLivingLegacy I would say that this is the most frequent RPG I play among all of RPGs I have played. But it was so complicated that I would not dare playing without searching for tips. One can stuck st the final boss if one does not prepare the parties enough. Not only parties, but along with town development, magic research, blacksmith, etc.

@@klissattack hopefully it lives up to expectations then as a long time fan! You’re right, I just went and watched the Square official video diving into the game more and the demo stops right when the game kicks off, which is a shame cause what I heard you do and how the story works across generations using different Emperors sounds REALLY intriguing. I don’t think that was highlighted how big a mechanic and story method that is

  • @IamTheSnowman4

Combat seems similar to octopath, I assume you cannot skip an enemy's turn by using the right weapon/element. Gonna guess you haven't played octopath.
The game looks amazing, I am considering playing the demo before release because saves can carry over. However, I am hoping it isn't just a tutorial and story demo. If it were then I'd probably wait a day or 2 before release to try the demo.
Does the demo contain an open space to roam, mobs that respawn? Or is it a railroaded experience through the intro of the story?

    • @MyLivingLegacy
      @MyLivingLegacy  4 дні тому +1

@IamTheSnowman4 yeah hitting enemy with weakness doesn’t skip their turn or even seem to push it back, it’s used just for extra damage and building the gauge for special attacks.
I have not, altho I am DESPERATE to find the time for Octo 2. I bought it physically actually after playing the demo last year for 3-4hrs and was enamoured. Been sitting here ever since 🥲
The demo is very much a linear straight shot, a very small town, 1 mini beginner dungeon, 2 normal ones with bosses at the end. Some tutorials but there’s isn’t too much.
The games map is a teleport system, you travel to another location instantly, no walking like other games or loading screen transitional between zones like in a Tales.
If you’re unsure and are gonna grab it anyway, I’d say wait a few days before, it’s only 1.5-2hrs worth anyway that carries into full game
