The Distinctive Calls of Owls: A Sampler
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лис 2013
- Most owls are nocturnal, and they use their voices to establish territories and attract mates in the dark. Several species begin nesting during as early as midwinter, which is one reason why you can often hear them in fall and winter, when most other birds are quiet.
For more owl sounds, check out Voices of North American Owls, macaulaylibrary... available through our Macaulay Library. This comprehensive audio guide is highly sought after and no longer available on CD. The digital download includes nearly 200 audio recordings of North America's 19 regularly occurring owl species, plus two rarities. The accompanying 28-page booklet contains detailed text and color photographs about each of the owls featured in the audio download.

They're all so majestic and the barn owl is just like "EEEEE!"
Malamute456 I couldn't help but laugh so hard at that comment
+Malamute456 a birds is majestic? it is an owl and that alone. you miss the point of their existence when you objectify them with your Anthropomorphism
+MidWestBoy Not at all. Majestic's just an adjective, a describing word. Not anthropomorphism at all...
+Malamute456 Majestic so many come near my house in the night and start screeching. you feel liking killing them all. I guess it is a while owl. i though love the animal but the sound is so incredibly annoying. cheers
Malamute456 I
I'm trying to identify the owl that's currently having the time of its life outside my window. It's 1am and my search continues.
3yrs later update: It was a barred owl. There are apparently several in my neighborhood. Every now and then, they scare the crap out of me. But recently there's been a new noise. It's a horrible shriek, but I haven't looked that one up yet.
Another update: I think the random shriek was a fox. According to my neighbors, there's a family of foxes that live behind them, and they constantly leave corpses around, such as rabbits. I don't know why we've never encountered them on our property. I can only assume it's because we've always had dogs that 'claim' the territory. Plus, there is a rarely seen extra large snake that likes to hang out in the garden or under the deck.

I have listened to so many of these samples that I have now forgotten what the owl outside sounds like. It's like a police line up on a detective show. Every one seems to be the right one.
Right?!
This is what I’m going through rn lol

Here because I’m trying to describe the sound of an owl in my English creative piece. I know what to write now- EEEEEEEEEEE
Did you find out?
Well the barred owl definately is asking who?
Me too
Or like a half broken doorbell
Has it been graded? How did you do?
I tell you what, walking in the woods at night and suddenly hearing a group of barred owls all go off at once is absolutely terrifying for a moment.
Me and my brother used to call back and have convos with the owls and one time I must have said something mean because the entire damn forest of owls went off and it was one of the coolest moments ever
that s how my car sounds ( roughly ) after you lift :p
trying to sleep rn, all of a sudden here around 2-4 of em. absolutely scared the crap out of me and then i looked it up and apparently they were mating, right in front of my house, so thats nice, and now i cant sleep

So the barn owls screech and the screech owls don't
Lmao
They can screech...which usually sounds like a scream.
+Owldude000 the call here is a mating call I think. their screech I believe is a territorial call.

Imagine hearing these in the middle of the night in the woods not knowing what a owl is 🤣
Ive been hearing something that screeches quite like a barn owl a couple of times outside my window. Feel a bit better now 😂

@@marblerun5149 Wait did you hear an owl screeching? Did you get to see it? Sorry I'm just super curious but that is terrifying were you running at night? That makes it much worse 🤣
I'm too much of a wuss to go running at night alone at least. But if I'm with my dog I'm okay since she's a big German Shepherd. I feel a bit more safe.
@@NatureWitch basically i live on the edge of my town and i turned into the park and suddenly i just hear the barn owl screech about 50m to my left. I pause to kind of process what is going on and then i hear it above my head and i just bolt it home

Listen to the great horned owl
Great Horned Owl is what most people hear in their heads.
I never thought an owl could sound like a horse.
SkyHigh87 My life has changed.
SkyHigh87 I. Thought the same thing XD
Animals could imagine horse's sound
Lol barred owl especially
that's what I thought-
That barred owl looks like it knows something I don't.
Desmond Bear it knows your sins.
Michael K it knows how many licks it takes to get to the center of a lollipop
it knows origami, angels and dominicans and horse rashes
Michael K it probably does
Chef cool
Had an Eastern Screech Owl in my backyard the other day.....the minute he swooped in ALL the birds became silent....it was SOMETHING !!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
That was awesome.
I can see now, very clearly, if you do not live in a place where you do not have wildlife about, as an everyday life experience, you are going to be so freaked out by these sounds.
Some of these birds sound ethereal.
Owls in my country only Hoot.
Lovely video. Thank you. 🌿
Eastern Screech Owl = the aliens have landed.
I looked at another video of them and it actually sounds like small horse.
P Jackson can I see this picture once more.
Western Screech Owl = jungle flutes
Eastern screech owl = Chewbacca

Sadly, Greg was never seen again. He was murdered by an ornithologist.
I laughed for ages.
Thank you for this. I was just awoken by a Barred Owl and it scared the crap out of me. Lol i was looking for what it could be and this definitely helped me identify it.
1:15 tripped me out
The name "Screech Owl" would really be more apropriate to the barn owl than either of the screech owls.

Owls are wild beasts and killers.
I was here to find an owl actually going whooohoohoohoho in a very deep voice.
This is so helpful! I heard an owl this morning when I took the dogs out, and now I know it was a barred owl.
I definitely got Barred Owls in the woods behind my house
same. just had to make sure it was a owl outside my house
We had them surround us during camping once. It was an awesome experience to hear them all around while laying in a pitch black tent at night.
Yes me too!! They can make an other worldly laughing sound too that will give you the eebee jeebees!!
And sometimes they scream like a woman!
Lorena McGovern No, that was me when...never mind.
Today I learned: Barn Owls sound horrifying
Omnipotence Paradox ikrr
Understatement.
SKREEEEECCHH!!!
But they're really cute. The screech isn't that loud and only when you piss them off. Some are so cute and friendly they will let you give them a face massage without biting your hand off. Barn owls are cute little birds
it made me scared-
Heard a barred owl in my backyard the other night in the pitch dark and having never heard one before, scared the heck out of me.
Barred owls love nighttime hootenannys. One of my favorite things to hear. 🦉🎶
the barred owl sound matched up PERFECTLY with the one i was hearing outside at the moment it played. that was amazing.
There's an eastern screech owl outside my window, and I'm playing this back for him.
I've heard that screeching sound in a tree near my patio several times..And I say to myself...What the Fuck, type of bird is that!!🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
I was going to my treestand in the dark one morning when I heard this weird sound like I never heard before and it was getting closer and closer to me.
I never knew what it was until I found this site. A barred owl. I figured it was some sort of owl, just because the time of day but I was never certain.
Thank you
I absolutely love the barred owls call though. It's absolutely precious.
In the 6-7 years I’ve been hearing an owl near my home tonight is the loudest I’ve ever heard it. I’m not sure what kind it is but I love hearing it. It calls then another in the distance calls. It’s awesome. I just stood outside in 27° weather to listen
The barred owl seems to be making an important decision ^^
It sounds like a dying old man...
Anyone else hear that?
Nashizu Konoha I hear a horse.
HMM HMMM
Is it just me or the barred owl has such an adorable voice.😂❤️
We have an Eastern screech owl that’s been living in the backyard for years !
Without a doubt the Barred Owl is my favorite. I get goosebumps whenever I hear it in the woods behind my house.
Eastern Screech is my favorite, there's something indescribable about it.
0:10 barn owl sounds like an old computer starting up
1:04 This one sounds like something between a sheep and a creaking door
Barn Owl - Amazingly scary, yet beautiful. Starts with a dragon-like call and ends with a not-so-scary cry
Eastern Screech Owl - Very hypnotizing, yet soothing. It is like listening to a Frequency Meditation video.
Western Screech Owl - Tricky because I hear two.
Barred Owl - Scary. Not a big fan, but it is a beautiful owl.
The barred owl is my favorite.
So here I am. It's 1 am on a Wednesday, and I'm listening to owl calls. Someone help me
I heard a barred owl call for the first time! I was outside and heard something that sounded like a wounded dog yowling. I went to investigate it and it stopped when I was close to my mango tree. I shined a light all around, and imagine my surprise when the only thing that could have sounded like that was perched on a branch! We were both curious about each other but it ended up flying away when I came back a second time just to make sure there wasn't really a wounded puppy lol. Now I know better :,) Sorry for frightening you little guy, fly high
My fave is the Barred owl's voice. I have at least one in my forested land. She/he hunts from 11am til after dark. This owl sits in one of the birdbaths I maintain for them and even seems to nap in it! Owls are amazing!!!:
My cat flipped the fuck out!

+Gerry Sassy it's intresting to me to listen to the birds ...it's their eerieee way of communicating with each other...😀

The two last ones, western screech owl and barred owl has a beautiful sound. I think the western screech owl was my favorite
I was just listening to a barred out about ten minutes ago. The first time I've hear them this year. It's such a beautiful sound.
I have Barred owls living behind my yard, I just love listening to them in the evening, and it is such a treat to see them fly through the yard or rest on my deck.
We were camping this weekend near Traverse City, Mi and I love falling asleep to the sound of Whippoorwill & Horned Owls. We always hear them when in the Boardman River valley.
1:01 If I heard that next to me in the dark I'd need new pants.
I'm trying to figure out what I have in the trees outside my window. I can't see it, I just hear 'Hoooo .... hoo ... hoooooooooo' all day and all night. I love the sound, I just wish I knew what it was. It doesn't sound like any of these owls.
Same •^•
Me Liz Try the Great Horned Owl
Me Liz We have "Morning Dove's" in my neighborhood. They make a "Hoooo...hoo..." sound. Initially I thought they were owls. That might be what you're hearing.?
Me Liz as Nemo already said, it is probably the Great Horned Owl which isn't in the video..
Daryl Randall or,the, wild barn owl ....
Western Screeh Owl, even though the barn owl is actually screeching! The barn owl is the only one other than whatever owl actually hoots that I've heard in real life. But they are all cool.
The screech owl for sure!

Illustrator Judy Pelikan pairs her delicate drawings of birds with excerpts and poetic mini-essays taken from a 1904 Field Book of Wild Birds and Their Music by F. Western Screech Owl. Next to my window and drives my wife nuts every night. LOL!
Scorpio Snake Did you know owls are the messengers of death?
Naw those are crows. Owls represent wisdom.
My mom couldn’t figure it out what it was, till I showed her this video and now she knows it

I hear Barred Owls all the time when I'm on camping trips. There was this one time I was camping and it was either really late or really early. Anyway, I was awake for a few minutes, and I heard an owl swoop down outside my tent, and grab a mouse or something, and there was a lot of rustling and screeching, then it flew off. And I just laid there thinking "What just happened?" Lol
Oh, thank you! I live in the desert and have never heard or seen an owl in person (in owl?) so I had no clue what they sounded like. They are all so beautiful! And what eyes they have! Wonderful, thanks so much.

This video is great it confirms that what flew over me in the starlight last night was a barn owl in Spain they're called lechuzas. I've heard the call many times but haven't seen one si close and in flight in years. The barred owl in the video has an amazing tone and resonance wow
Cool! Barn Owl sighting confirmed. Thank you UA-cam! (saw a bird fly overhead while stargazing tonight, whistled at it, it screeched back, had to check its sound, spot on)

Guess there's a barred owl outside goin' WOO WOO WOO. My windows are shut and homeboy still loud as hell
Wow. I've been trying to identify that screeching sound the barn owl makes for a long time. In my region (northern california) there is some kind of animal that makes that noise... but it only calls once (not in a repetition like the owl in this example). It does not repeat reliably, making it very hard to find the animal (never seen it), it may call again after several minutes pass... but again, only once with a lot of time passing before calling again, if at all. I suspected it was a bird, someone tried to tell me it was a raccoon, but now I'm sure it's some kind of barn owl.
My girlfriend makes the same kinda sounds
Your girlfriend screeches, makes sci-fi noises, and makes the sound of that guy from the Dark Crystal?
