Hehe... I play piano and my daughter asked me to enroll her in electric guitar lessons two years ago. She quit after a year, but within that period, I also picked up a Fender Strat, a Squier Bronco bass and a Pearl Roadshow kit that I customized with a new zebrawood finish and some hardware mods, and got myself to learn how to play them. It's actually quite fun to get out of a comfort zone and acquire this song-focused mode that playing just one instrument won't give you. Congrats on your new kit, Shane!

Hey Shane, its a lockdown thing! I don't have room for an acoustic kit so went for those Yamaha digital kits. Thought it would be a cheap option, but soon found myself upgrading the pedals to proper foot pedals and a kickpad. Also bought a second master unit... Cos you soon find you can never have too many things to hit! Betcha its not long before all those extra cymbals are out and a few extra of those can shaped things start appearing! You think havingG.A.S. is bad?? Have fun!!!

Right off the bat that recording at the end felt really good. Like the recordings you do normally are still great but having the drums you tracked in there beefed it up so much and gave it a much more organic feel. It's probably more of a hassle but it's very much worth it for bigger demos at the least. That kit sounds really good too given its form factor.

I recommend a tea towel or leather wallet on the snare and floor tom esp. if you try sticks. 5A are the industry standard stick but 7A and 8a are thinner and good for lighter playing.Tune the bottom heads half to a full turn tighter than the batter side on top in general using 2 drum keys opposite edges of the 🥁

Try the Glyn Johns technique... Close mic the kick and snare (an SM57 works well for snare), position a condenser over the kit centred on the snare, and a second condenser looking across the floor tom, equidistant from the centre of the snare... When you mix it, pan the two condensers hard left and right and you get this huge, spacious drum sound.

Drums is my primary instrument but I enjoy your guitar videos because I'm a lefty guitarist and bassist too. I recamend if you are looking for something quieter than drum sticks but more body than brushes, get some of the wooden dowel type of whips. A great example is the "Rute" bamboo sticks from Vic Firth. I use them a lot for band rehersals and gigs and even recording when playing a bit quieter is requested or a need. Give them a try. They are a great in between from sticks and brushes.

Enjoy the new kit mate. I played drums when I was younger and am hoping to get an electric kit wen I finish building my new studio. I use a few virtual drum packs at the moment but would rather play my own kit. I’m going electric to keep the volume down and for easier editing in my DAW but it won’t be the same as rocking out on a real acoustic kit. I don’t know if you can still get them, but I used heads that had a double skin with an oil layer between them. They didn’t ring as much and I much preferred the sound. Might be worth checking out when you wear out the heads on yours.

Also, moving your ride to be just behind (from your seated perspective) the hi-hats might be a really good compromise, I know several lefties that play that way (sharing a kit with a righty only takes moving the ride around instead of mirroring the whole kit for those inflexible righties like me xD ).

Mate if you don't want it too loud in the house, try chucking an old blanket in the bass drum and gaffa tap some rolled up paper towel to the toms near the edge. Quick and cheaper than getting those drum rings but does something similar.
That's one of the things with cheaper kits and where they save the money is the cymbals. I ended up buying a cheap Sabian cymbal pack to replace the ones that came on my daughters set as they sounded like hitting trash cans!

Can you demo the $30 Klon they have on Wish? Looks pretty good! 😂 Cool kit! I’ve played drums all my life. Guitar is my second instrument. I’d like to have that kit.

I live out in the sticks so I'll be fine. The kit isn't very loud either. I am letting the mics do the work :)

JRR ... sorry man .. disagree ! Even here in Shane's vid .... that kit sounds caca compared to his usual computer software drums .

I got an electric midi kit for song writing which is great fun. If I got a real kit I'd be in deep trouble with the neighbours ! My drum playing style seems to prefer the Keith Moon sloppy timing approach ! Fortunately with midi it has quantise !
