    We've been putting our new Roadmaster Sterling All-Terrain towbar to the test for several months now, and we're happy to report that binding is a thing of the past. Flat-towing is now better than ever!
    Binding while trying to disconnect a toad (towed car) from the motorhome is a common problem, and the primary reason we upgraded from our old Blue Ox towbar in the first place. Since then, we've been trying to make our new Roadmaster Sterling bind at every opportunity. So far, we have not been able to do it, even when disconnecting on steep inclines or sharp turns (or both at the same time).

    Thanks Guys. I had a tow bar downhill and sharp turn binding experience I never want to experience again with my older blue ox towbar (without release handles)! After your first video I was sold and found a good deal on a Roadmaster Blackhawk 2. I am so happy I made the change. Connecting and disconnecting is now a breeze without any assistance and what a timesaver with the integrated safety cables!

    Thanks for this awesome video guys. Have been using the Blue Ox tow bar since June and am a huge fan of flat towing in general. However, have had a little bit of issues with binding with ours. That being said, flat towing is still significantly better than having to drive our RV everywhere or use a tow dolly :).
    Hope you guys are well!

      Great to hear from you Heath! We're doing great and hope you and Alyssa are, too. We agree with you for sure... even with a towbar that binds sometimes, flat towing beats driving two vehicles separately, or dealing with where to stow a dolly or trailer in small campsites. :)

    Great video ! We also had the same Blue Ox tow bar, the secret is to turn the steering wheel (in the toad) in the direction in which bar is "stuck", after you do that you will be able to unlatch with ease. After almost 60K of towing with the Aladdin we switched to the Avail, so far we have had great results with this one. I do like the cable management on the one you have in the video. Happy Travels.

    Good follow up video. While we have a Roadmaster Sterling, it is an early model... and this might be just enough to get us to upgrade. The new Sterlings also have the benefit of being rated for higher towing loads over the previous generation, which can't hurt either. Safe travels!!

    We tow a 2015 F150 4X4 with an International Harvester Diesel Super C using a Roadmaster Blackhawk tow bar and Invisibrake. It is very easy to connect and disconnect even without having the truck straight behind the motorhome. With the Invisibrake we don't have to install a brake unit of some kind in the truck every time we want to tow. There is a quick, easy sequence to be followed to set up for towing. It tows so well you're barely aware of it. It was an expensive set-up, but worth it to us.

      +Bill Long That is great to hear, Bill. We're so happy with how well this bar works that it's no surprise that their braking system is so well sorted out, too. Oh...the decision I'll NEVER understand...He just bought a brand new Jeep in May. Then he needs a truck to haul pinestraw & home projects from Home Depot. So he comes home with a brand new 4 door, SHORT bed truck with all the fender moldings and rivet crap. WTH??? Why do you need a brand new, 4 door truck to haul pinestraw twice a year. My van is 9 yrs old and windows don't roll down, doors don't lock and it never had the remote & headsets to the DVD players the grandkids wanted & love to have on trips! I will never understand that purchase. LOL

      +Mick Martin Hi Mick. We have an old built-in Blue Ox System that is no longer made. If we were in the market for a new braking system today, the top one on our list for consideration is the SMI Air Force One. Obviously we have no personal experience with it, but we suggest it's worth a look.

    Did you have to change base plates or get special adaptors to attach the sterling to your original blue ox base plates. We have the best blue ox tow bar but also have problems disconnecting if not on level ground. I wish Blue Ox could fix this as we've only had ours about six months and I hate the thought of needing to replace it but it is frustrating. Thanks for All of your videos, we've learned so much from them.

    I recently commented on how pleased we were with our new Roadmaster Black Hawk 2 towing system. We do appreciate the ease of connecting and disconnecting in tight situations. However, one of the baseplate brackets broke completely today and bent the cross bar slightly as well. I heard a "pop" as we were pulling into a visitor center today and decided to take a quick look before we left, as I often do. The one side was hanging beneath the bumper of our F150. Needless to say, we couldn't tow it that way. Now I will be driving the truck 1200 miles home to Phoenix because dealers are few and far between in Wyoming. Just a warning to inspect your tow bar frequently. I hope this is a very unusual occurrence.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  6 років тому

      Hi Judith. Sorry to hear about your situation. How old is your tow bar, and have you contacted Roadmaster about what's happened? We have never heard of a baseplate breaking, and we're sure that Roadmaster would want to know about this immediately. We suggest that before you go the trouble of following your RV for 1,200 miles, you at least make them aware of this and see if they can provide any guidance or support. They open tomorrow (Monday morning) and the main number is 1-800-669-9690. Please let us know how you make out, and if it can be determined what went wrong.

    • @judithallyn1930

      The tow bar was installed in May and we drove from AZ to IN for a motor home rally and on to northern MN, where we spent 2 months without using the tow bar. There we had the brackets inspected because they appeared to be too loose. It was discovered that we had lost several bolts, possibly because they did not have Loc-tite on them, They were replaced and we had driven to WY when the bracket failed. While I first thought that just the tube had broken, it appears that a square part on the bracket had very little weld on it. That apparently gave way and caused the lighter metal to break. I do intend to call Roadmaster to see what help they can offer. I'm sure this is a very unusual case. Thank you for your response.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  6 років тому

      Hi Judith. Everything we've ever seen from Roadmaster is WAY overbuilt, and we've never heard of anything like this. Of course we can't tell for sure, but if you have ANY bolt fall out, let alone "bolts," we've very suspicious about the quality of the installation job. You should absolutely contact Roadmaster right away. And please keep us posted as to what they say and what they can do. We know the management there very well, and they take this type of thing extremely seriously, and will want to know about this ASAP. Please keep us posted.

    • @judithallyn1930
      @judithallyn1930 6 років тому

      Update on our broken bracket. Roadmaster is going to replace the bracket and cross bar free of charge. Of course, they want to look at the broken parts to try to determine the cause of the failure. We were well within the recommended 3000 mile check, but also drove some really rough highways before we reached our summer destination. However, it is difficult to imagine losing bolts to this degree if the original installation had been done correctly. We could have had a very serious accident and we will be contacting our dealer when we return to Phoenix in November. Thank you so much for your advice in this matter. I really enjoy your videos and have found many useful tips.

      It's great to hear (but no surprise) that Roadmaster is doing the right thing. Great video as always guys. I've always been a Blue Ox user and see that they now have the Avail towbar which is supposed to be a non-binding towbar similar in concept to the Roadmaster you've reviewed. Have you tried out the Blue Ox Avail yet?

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  7 років тому

      We haven't tried the Avail, so not sure how it compares to Roadmaster's "Freedom Latch" release. Roadmaster patented it a long time ago, and uses it on many of their bars, so we do have a lot of confidence in it, vs a newer design that only gets used on one bar. Since Blue Ox claimed that our original Aladdin towbar, which was the top of the line when we bought it, was "non-binding" as well, we'd want to check a lot more about anything else they claim, since that bar was never non-binding. We found it challenging from day one, and are thrilled with the difference that we're seeing with Roadmaster. Not sure if Blue Ox is still claiming that the Aladdin is non-binding, but if so... it's not! ;-)

      Hey Bill! Our Honda has been going strong for over 14 years getting dragged all over creation! Modern cars with digital odometers don't rack up miles while towing, and the only thing that seems to get added wear are the tires.

    Could you tell me what type of braking system you use? We were ready to buy a Blue Ox tow bar but after seeing your video, I may buy the Roadmaster. Is the Sterling Roadmasters top of the line tow bar? Keep up the great work.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  7 років тому

      +Ron Fugere Thanks Ron! Sterling is their top of the line aluminum towbar, but they do make a steel bar with a higher towing capacity: The Blackhawk 2, which is also All-Terrain so it won't bind either. That's a 10,000 lb bar where ours is 8,000.
      We have a very old Blue Ox braking system that's no longer made. We'd suggest looking at either Roadmaster's InvisiBrake or the SMI Air Force One, both of which we've heard great things about.

    I am currently in the process of wanting to get this RoadMaster Sterling AllTerrain, installed on my 2006 Jayco Seneca 34 SS to tow my 2018 Jeep Trailhawk this winter as I leave Prince Edward Island Canada and head to Florida for the winter. I've been trying to find out how I go about finding out exactly what I need to order, so that I can bring to the RV dealer and have it installed on both vehicles. Any info at all as to where to start would be priceless as it's been a frustrating process to this point LOl. I at it but unsure of all the components required to reach my goal of installation. Great Product, want to buy it!!!! Robert C. MacMillan

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  5 років тому

      Hi Robert! First off, by far the biggest part of the job is installing the base plate onto your jeep. That usually requires some specialized experience and knowledge from the installer, which means they are usually the ones most expert at assembling the pieces to get the job done. If your shop has never done a base plate installation before, we would be sure to confirm with them that they are absolutely qualified to take on this fairly specialized task. If you’re comfortable that they are, calling Roadmaster directly to ask about all the necessary pieces is the best way to go. Their phone number is (800) 669-9690.
      By the way, if you decide to step up one level to their top-of-the-line towbar, the Nighthawk (the lighted one we have now), be sure to tell them you want the “RVgeeks Package“ and they will include a towbar lock and cover, and $89 value, for free.

    Another great video, guys. Question: So why did you guys choose a tow bar, as opposed to a dolly or full trailer and what factored into your decision? I know there are many pros and cons to the various tow methods, but the added wear on the tow vehicle is a huge con to my mind.

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  7 років тому +2

      Thanks, and great question. Many RV sites barely have enough room for an RV and a toad car, so needing space for a dolly, and especially a trailer can be limiting. As full-timers, we specifically bought a car that was flat towable, and made the investment in having a baseplate installed. We can't imagine any other way to go than flat towing, as it's amazingly quick, simple and convenient to connect & disconnect, and the equipment takes up almost no space. If you were to need to tow a car that cannot be flat-towed (maybe you already own a car that you love and don't want to part with it even though it's not flat-towable), that's the only reason we can think of for using a dolly, or if you want to be able to tow more than one car (not simultaneously of course! LOL). A trailer might be needed if you're towing a classic car that you want to protect (especially if you were to go with an enclosed trailer for total protection). The wear and tear issue on a regular car has seemed pretty minimal. Just the extra mileage on the tires really. We've been towing the same car for nearly 14 years and it's never seemed to suffer from the additional rolling. And since electronic speedometers don't register mileage with the car shut off, there's no extra mileage showing. Hope this helps a bit!

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 7 років тому

      Big help, thanks! I guess another big advantage to these is their light weight. I'm planning to purchase a diesel sprinter class b in a few years and want to be able to tow a small car of some kind on extended trips. These RVs typically have a max towing capacity of 5000 lb, minus cargo and passengers, so a tow bar may be my only option to stay below that. It's good to know that my wear concerns are probably overblown.

      Hey Jason! Thanks again for the interest.... and the kick in the butt! ;-)
      If you go to our Home page: www.thervgeeks.com you'll see that there a new tab, third from the bottom in the navigation on the left side: Swag Shop.
      It's pretty basic, so we're not making any official announcement about it at this point, but hopefully you'll find what you had in mind. If not, please let us know! We went with Spreadshirts because that have good reputation. If you do decide to purchase something, please let us know what you thought of the overall experience and quality.
      Thanks again. :)
      (sorry for the false start a minute ago with this reply... was accidentally logged in with our other UA-cam account)!

    Question: Do you have any experience or an opinion on the RediBrake surge brake?

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  7 років тому

      Hi David! Honestly, we haven't really looked at the current state of auxiliary braking systems in a long time... so the only information we can find on a "ReadyBrake" model looks like it's attached inline with the tow-bar and applies proportional "pull" on the towed vehicles brakes. If that's the unit you're referring to, our only "issue" with systems like that is that they operate on the towed brake pedal without any vacuum assist. So it requires a LOT of force applied to the "dead" brake pedal on the car/truck being towed.It's probably not really a problem... but our preference is for braking systems that supply vacuum to the towed vehicles brakes so they are operating the way they were engineered to. Systems like the Invisibrake by Roadmaster or the SMI AirForceOne are the kind of system that we would look at, were we in the market again.
      Hope this helps!

      RVgeeks Just a follow up note. After checking out all the systems and your latest "Nighthawk" review we have decided to travel to Vancouver, WA in June for the installation of the Nighthawk, RoadMasters electronic braking system and the base plates for our P/U. You guys Rock!

      That's great, David! Roadmaster builds such great equipment, we know you'll be in great shape with their gear. Safe travels.

    Hoping y’all see this and can help. I’m traveling solo with 2 teen girls. I have a Thor class A and just bought a Jeep to tow. The shop tells me that the Blue Ox 7420 is what I want for no binding. Equipment cost is $3500. Does this sound right?

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  5 років тому

      Hi LaRita! We switched from a Blue Ox to a Roadmaster two bar and we’re big fans, since any “All Terrain” Roadmaster will not bind when releasing. The 7420 was Blue Ox’s answer to the All Terrain Roadmaster tow bars, and they claim it won’t bind either, but we have no experience with it. Is $3,500 for the tow bar, the base plate for the Jeep, a braking system & installation of everything?

    • @REPVILE

      that price better include the supplemental brakes and install.

      +Raymond McDonald We're dragging a 2003 Honda CR-V EX with manual transmission. Works great, and we love it. Too bad the new CR-Vs aren't flat-towable anymore.

    I have a car that can't be flat toad. Does Road Master make something for that situation?

      They make dollies, which are perfect for non-flat-towable front-wheel-drive cars: roadmasterinc.com/products/towdolly/towdolly.html

    Does this towbar brake the towed car?

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  6 років тому +1

      Hi Ben! Tow bars don't have any braking system built in, which is why you need to add a braking system into the towed car separately. Most tow bar manufacturers, including Roadmaster, make a couple of different types of towed brake systems, giving RVers a choice of types, depending on their needs. We have an old Blue Ox system installed in our car, which is no longer made. If we were to buy a braking system today, our first choices would be either the SMI Air Force One or the Roadmaster InvisiBrake.

      Hi thanks for that.
      I am looking for a 1 man operation solution.
      Here in the UK and Europe, my Mk4 golf can legally tow 750kg , unbraked (1350 kg braked ) but most cars weight more.
      The car I need to tow weighs more than that.
      I will look into your recommendations.

    Are they reasonably priced ?

    • @RVgeeks

      They can anywhere from about $500 up to about $1,200 for our top of the line Nighthawk.

      Thankyou for the information
      Even converting that into 🇦🇺 $AUD is still far more justifyable than the other $3,000- $4,500 brand new cave man option. 👍

    • @RVgeeks

      One other thing we forgot to mention… You’ll need more than just a tow bar, as a base plate must also be installed in the car to allow the towbar to connect to it. The labour for that along with the base plate could end up costing as much as the tow bar. Sorry we forgot to mention that

      That's ok at least you remembered, thankyou for that. 🙏
      There's obviously some reason why they never made them available in Australia 🇦🇺 not as far as I'm aware let's just say that, but will look into it.
      Let's keep in mind that there is every chance I'm not up to scratch yet as well.
      It's only now that I need to look into it, so that kind of explains that in a sense.
      I will need to look into what our regulations are and if or how it may impact insurance here.
      Lots to look into and consider but I think they're a brilliant idea and if it's welcomed here I'll be putting my hand up immediately for one.
      They make a lot of sense on many levels in my opinion.
      Once again..👍 🙏

    Dumb question: can you only tow cars with manual transmissions, or are they just safer/easier?

    • @RVgeeks
      @RVgeeks  7 років тому

      Not a dumb question at all! Some models of car can only be towed in the manual transmission version, but there are lots of cars with automatics that can be flat-towed, too. The nice part about having a stick (at least in our era Honda CR-V, and many others, too) is that they can generally be towed with no restrictions or modifications. Some automatics stipulate that you have to stop every so many hours and idle the car's engine, or shift through the gears, or even have a drive-shaft disconnect installed.
      The best way to know what the choices and requirements are is to research the options in the Annual Motorhome Magazine Dinghy Towing Guide. Here's the link to all of the guides, by year, dating all the way back to the year 2000:
