Accidentally Catching Murray Cod While Lure Fishing For Yellowbelly

- A couple of good sized murray cod caught during closed season whilst targeting golden perch with smaller sized HC Lures spinnerbaits. Unfortunately the yellas didn't want to play on this day! Both cod were in excellent condition with beautiful colours, and they looked like they had been eating very well indeed.
With great respect for murray cod and their breeding habits, I stopped fishing after catching the 2nd cod. Cod can forgo spawning if disturbed too much, and at this time of year there's a chance they will abandon their nest if they feel too threatened. You will notice that I only got a very quick look at each cod before quickly returning them to the water with the hope of distressing them as little as possible. If it was summertime and cod season was open, I probably would have got a quick photo and measurement of these lovely fat fish, but on this occasion during the closed season I settled for a few seconds of video footage before getting them swimming.

Great fish! That Murray cod reminds me of a largemouth bass here in the states. ( what’s left of the states.) And the monitor lizard tells me Australia is full of dinosaurs!😂 And by the way, great job editing.

I guess they have a similar shape to a largemouth bass just a different color and with mottling, but Murray Cod can grow up to 6 feet long I'm pretty sure largemouth bass don't do that lol. @@RKJFishing I just came back myself from the golbourn, got a 38cm silver perch, 1 trout cod and 3 carp 😂 but what absolutely pisses me the F off is: scums dumping rubbish! I come there and theres heaps of bottles and cans. I did the right thing though and cleaned it up. A lot of people unfortunately these days are inconsiderate animals

Glad to see I'm not the only one that suffers this "curse" as I call it. For the past few years now, a good mate of mine and I go out every spring and target a few yellas, the last 4-5 years running, on our first session every year, I've been guaranteed to hook up to a cod, not once has it happened to him, they must just know it's me or something🤣
In saying that, we decided to mix it up a little today and head out to the Hume to chase a few reddies up. 3 casts in old mate gets smashed by an absolute slab of a yella on a 2.5" curl tail just having a quick flick while I parked the car 🎣🤣
haha yeah in my case they just wanna be on camera I think lol. Well done on the yella, i've heard hume is fishing very well for them

Thanks Robert! I'm running J-braid 40lb braid all the way to the lure, the heavy line helps me get my lures back off the snags. It's a team Daiwa hyper baitcaster rod, with a daiwa tatula reel

G'day Rohan. I think the cod season is shaping up nicely. By the way, the lure you caught your PB trout on just did extremely well for me as well. I just spent 4 days fishing the Buckland river for probably 40 fish. I hooked a few on the flanks of the fish. Did you notice that at all. Great looking cod.

Great video cant wait for cod season i did a similar thing i was fishing for redfin with a 3 inch strike tiger grub and caught my pb tench coming in at 48cm never ever heard of anyone doing that so awesome he fought like hell and bit with about 1m of line out quite similar

There's still heaps of fish in Kennington Reservoir, I was there a couple of weeks ago and hooked up to a couple of rainbow trout but lost both of them, I saw other people catching trout as well. Trust me I don't always catch fish, there are PLENTY of fishless trips in between the successful ones haha

You probably didn't need to lift the cod out of the water, I'm a huge fan of yours but I felt you put getting likes over the health of the fish, you didn't need to hold it by it's neck man
At no point did I hold it by it's neck? I held it's mouth and comfort lifted under it's belly. It was out for about 10 seconds, I've seen people holding up meter cod for minutes out of season. I did what I could for the fish, and I stand by it. Sorry if that offends you.
