    Thank you - I have had the camera since it was launched and never really looked into this area in much detail so this was really useful

    Somehow succinct and expansive at the same time. Great video.

    Just discovered your channel and now subscribed. An excellent, informative and clearly explained video, which being fairly new to video recording on the R5 I have found extremely useful. Thank you and now looking forward to Pt 2!

    Hi - Thanks for this. To make the R5 work similarly to my previous Panasonic GH6 with their dedicated DMW-XLR1 XLR Microphone Adapter, I bought the Canon-recommended Tascam CA-XLR2d-an (analog version), which feeds directly into the stereo port on the R5. I often need to use a lav mic with a shotgun mic for a good room mix. I also bought the Canon DM-E1 "Directional Microphone" for quick run and gun stuff. The DM-E1 seems to work as expected (haven't noticed issues in my limited use), but the Tascam analogue unit is different - not sure why. When I try to edit in FCPX, the audio channels don't seem to be separately editable. I do have a Zoom F8 (upgraded) that I can use if I need three or more mics, but it's a bit clunky for typical stuff - though it works well. I HAVE done some Time Code work with the Tentacle sync units, but that's clunky as well. So, my questions - have you worked with the Tascam unit at all? And do you have difficulties editing the audio track off of the Zoom F6 (a much less clunky unit than my older F8). And why am I stuck on the word "clunky" today? Thanks again for your work on this.

      I have not used the Tascam interfaces, but I have routed my F6's line out through the camera's mic in. It works just like any other mic from an editing perspective. The F6 just saves a wav file for each channel individually and, optionally, one for the overall mix. For a single channel, I use Resolve's audio waveform sync function to append or replace the scratch tracks with the good ones. I honestly haven't dealt with syncing multiple audio tracks in long enough that I don't remember how I dealt with them.
      I think your problem in FCPX is that the R5 records audio as a single stereo stream as opposed to two mono streams. You can't do anything about this in the camera, so you'll need to edit the clip's properties in FCPX so that the L/R channels are treated as separate mono tracks.

      I always have to fix this in Premiere (should work in FCP too) but I just duplicate the tracks then I use the audio filter “fill right with left” on one track, and “fill left with right” on the other track. (Leaving this here for future reference in case others have the same question)

    I have a canon EOS 77D and I can’t find that setting option for audio anywhere. Does it even exist on the camera?

      It appears that the sound recording options are on the first page of the shoot menu section in your camera. That said, you have to be in movie mode (the power switch has to be set to movie), and you may need to be in M, Av, Tv, or P modes, or at least not in full auto [A+] for the menu to be displayed.

    My sound recording section only has an on and off

      Your camera is almost certainly set to the full auto exposure mode. When Canon's cameras are in auto exposure mode, most of the actual configuration options are disabled and removed from the menus.
      You'll need to switch you camera to one of the other exposure modes (P, Fv, Tv, Av, or M) to get full access to the camera settings.

    If I'm on manual mode and ipb lite, will that still compress the audio even with the setting disabled?

      Yes.

    R5 - Rode external microphone sound recording does not work in auto?

    • @PointsInFocus
      @PointsInFocus  Рік тому +1

      You should be able to use an external mic on the R5 in auto just fine. Plug in the mic and set the sound red mode to auto.

      @@PointsInFocus Thanks. Thinking the mic is the problem now. Auto worked on the 5D but hasn't cooperated with the R5. Anyways, I preferer manual, just have to make sure I shut power off to the mic after use.
