Nice input, thx m8. I got that and the raw update, but prefer Prores when I run Ninja. Might need to try the native. 265 again. Rec. 2020 and Full in Davinci ND Ninja also stay true in colors
Thanks for your video Per. My question is, when there is too much light such as a very sunny day, what happens if I use clog3 iso 100, instead of iso 800 with an nd filter
An awesome resultat? Base ISO is just that, base. If you got enough light to pull off a CLOG3 ISO100, go ahead. I would still try to stay 800 or max 400 and rather add more ND to ensure proper exposure and max dynamic range
Thanks man, I appreciate you time. This base-iso-800 thing scared me a lot. I don't do professional works for now (only casual and lazy vlogs), but I still like to keep the balance between the quality of the footage, and the easiness and speed of using the equipments while enjoying my travel. I just needed to hear someone else's opinion that going under base iso is not the end of the world.
I think a lot of people (me included) when they get started read base, recommendations etc as have-tos. There is only one have-to when making videos for your self, are you happy with them? :) I often break base ISO and somtimes you can even do the opposite and go above 800 of the circumstances require it.
The reason why it is not recommended to go below base ISO is, that it will significantly reduce your dynamic range and crush the details in your shadows. Also it won‘t help with actually clipped highlights, they will still be clipped. That’s because every change from base ISO is basically post-processing exposure editing. It doesn’t influence the amount of light, it just moves a slider, so it can‘t add details in the highlights that aren’t there to begin with. In my experience (with the C300) you often get a better result with adding an ND Filter and going slightly over base ISO, than with removing an ND Filter and going below it. Different cameras with different sensors might behave different tho, and different people might have different preferences and limits for what they still find acceptable. So it’s worth taking your camera, doing some test pictures and working out the ISO range where you feel comfortable with the results.
Very nice anser and I totally agree. Each situation is usually unique and experience on how to read the situation as well as knowing the gear can make or brake many sessions. I mostly use my C70 now, so with built in ND, it's a different ball game :) Love that camera
Awesome video as usual. Thank you much. I understood the ISO 400-800 on C Log. Is their a rule of thumb on what is the standard ISO for C Log and C Log 3, and what ISO for each ?
Thank you very much m8. Yes, base ISO is just that, rule of thumb and it's possible to "break" when needed. I feel this is something a lot of people are afraid to do or missunderstand. Think I will do a video about that. Base ISO for CLOG is 400 and 800 for 2 and 3.
Hi. If we are not using LOG is the camera recording in Rex 709 while on basic picture setting? Im wondring if using this for speed the corect colour setting to add in Davinci Resolve.
Hi - does this same information still apply even after the multiple firmware updates to the EOS R6 MK I ? I’m thinking on purchasing this camera and just want to be sure if anything has improved at all. 😊
Yes. 1.7 was two minor bug fixes and 1.8 (1.8.1 after the hotfix and recall of 1.8) was mostly minor stuff. Both FM added better heat management with 1.8.1 making it really good. Check out my last video about over heating. I made my R6 record 4K for over 5h ;)
Do you mean auto footage as in Rec.709 or no log footage? That shouldn't be so hard as any LOG footage needs to be converted to Rec.709 before you use it anyway, so in fact, log needs to be "auto/normal". Depending on your NLE (editing software) the processes is a little different, but either a conversion LUT or color transformation. Did that explain your question?
It did. I find myself a little torn between choosing CLOG3 or a color profile because I have a real issue with noise in low light using CLOG3 but I have an ever more difficult time with a regular color profile in bright sun. I do use CLOG3 99% of the time and used conversion LUTs but the low light is killing me. The people looked like they were recorded on a 2010 android device
Base ISO is only appliciable for CLOG#, so short answer is none. Use what you like and what the situation requires. Which on the other hand also works for LOG. I often shoot 400 in CLOG3 and have even used 200 sometimes.
Great video Per ! R6 Highly under-rated ! Im having an issue when trying to film 24fps FHD recording on the ninja V. The Ninja wont pick up my camera's frame rate - it picks up fine when filming in 4k . Do you have this issue at all. ? Also on file sizes I've experimented with pro-res LT and 422 and cant tell much difference to HQ Which really cuts down on the storage space. Have you played around and noticed any loss in quality ?
Thank you very much Justin. I had to run to the studio to test this so sorry for a late response. I couldn't reproduce your error. I tried both starting recording from my camera as well as the Ninja to see if that made any difference but it didn't. When I opened them in Resolve they all said the correct FPS. As I'm Swedish I didn't try 24, but 25 and 50. I got my Camera Output (under Input) set to Log/HDR on. Not sure that would help. If you can't sort it, look me up on Facebook or email me and I can drop a screenshot of all my Ninja and R6 settings if you like. As to your question about LT vs HQ, not much of a difference I agree, but my Drone shoots HQ 444 Prores and my C70 in Long Gop just feels more as a match. TBH, since I got the C70 as an A-cam I only use Ninja when I do client work and then space isn't much of an issue. For personal use I would stay LT :)
Shutterspeed for Video doesn't work as with photo. It should be set to double your frame rate. For 24/25fps you should have 1/50th. For 60fps - 1/120th. 120fps - 1/240th of a second and so one. Or 180deg shutter angle as it's called on cinema cameras. That means that first you decide your frame rate. Then you set your shutter speed accordingly. Lastly you set your apurture to what look you want. Then you will have to either add light (external video light or sun) or block light (ND filter) to get proper exposure.
I haven't heard anything about. Posted in Atomos forums, FB groups as well as reached out directly to Atomos. Still waiting for any confirmation for either if it's fixed or still there. I will keep you updated as soon as I hear something new.
I mainly shoot wedding films, and mostly outside, and I'm always battling too much light - usually 5-6 stops too much - does that mean I could run 400 ISO in CLog3?
@@persvanstrom just came back to this, and I've learned a little bit more about exposing properly for CLog3. I'm now using a monitor (not recorder) and I'm able to better see the exposure - I think I had my zebras set incorrectly - but I also thing Clog is better for weddings, since the lighting situations change so much. I also learned that CLog3 is way flatter, and even though I can have Cinema Gamut, it doesn't help if I have a noisy shot (say for example wedding toast speeches, even when properly lit).
Thank you for making this video. FYI, I called Canon and asked specifically about the base ISO when shooting in Log. The Canon technical rep said that there is no base ISO for an R5 or R6. He knows that it exists in other cinematic cameras, but not those. I continue to be confused on this topic.
Thank you Doug for watching and your comment. I will try to sort this. Base ISO for LOG exists. So for CLOG3 that is 800 and for CLOG(1) that is 400, CLOG2 is also 800. It's just the base. I often shoot ISO400 on CLOG3 when I got enough light as it do give a little less noise. So if you are using CLOG3 in an R6/R5 then the base ISO is in fact 800, but if you are shooting in standard Rec709 or taking photos, then there is no base ISO. Does that clear it up or make it even more confusing? :)
@@persvanstrom Thank you for responding and I totally understand what you are saying. However, that is not what the rep at Canon said. They said that the ISO can be whatever you want. I will call them back and ask them again. You were quite clear and , in fact, many videos on UA-cam mention the same thing that you did. But, I was curious and wanted more information, so I called them. So, this is why I’m confused.
Base ISO isn't a requirement, it's just where it starts. So if we instead replace "Base ISO" with "recommended ISO starting point" it might become more clear? It's not like the camera will break or not work if you choose another ISO, but what it means is that the ISO of a certain LOG, the base ISO, is what will produce, at most circumstances, the cleanest image. A 800 ISO CLOG will be a lot more noisy than a 800 ISO CLOG3 at the exact same settings otherwise as they have different Base ISO's. Thats it! Nothing magic and nothing we, as creators can't break. Your rep is also wrong, cause the LOG has a Base ISO, it's just how the LOG profile works and CLOG is just Canons version of LOG and 3 is just the version of the LOG. Maybe he/she is confusing Base ISO and Native ISO?
@@persvanstrom Ok, great. I will call Canon USA when I get home and give them this information and we will see how they respond. I only want to know what is best for the videos. Regards,
@@dougdina keep us updated 🧡 and best is what works for you 😉 I've shot ISO200 Clog2 and it looked amazing as well as 1600 ISO. Amount and quality of light will influence more than ISO imho

If you have a Adobe Cloud license you can convert them with Adobes media encoder. I did that first when I got my R6, but quickly upgraded to Studio. Biggest advantage of Studio is the GPU / Hardware acceleration. It will X10 your speeds. It's a game changer. The .265 is a bonus ;)
@@persvanstrom Hi i don't have adobe cloud unfortunately just had to buy a better gpu card for my pc due to slow playback in davinci 4k video i have the canon xa50 but recently purchased the canon r6 ideally i want to be able to film 4k video but also take photo's & switch between then on location any suggestions & thanks great videos
Oh, congratulations! I can recommend to set your project to 4K but your timeline to 1920. That way you can work faster when edit. Just switch timeline back to 4K before exporting and you got 4K output. As ot switching. between Photo and Video really depends on your situation. Let's say you do event photography and want to also capture some video quickly. Then I would ensure I got the right video settings while in photo mode and just hit record (the red button) when you need video. If you want more deliberate video capture while needing to photograph, it's still better to swtich to video mode as you get more control over your video quality. Then I would prob use C1-C3 for photo settings and just keep turning that dial between photo and video. I should have videos for both Custom Shooting modes (C1-C3) and best video settings.
It doesn’t have to, but the base ISO (standard) for CLOG3 is 800. So it’s what CLOG is calibrated for. It gives most dynamic range and least amount of noise. I sometimes use 400, but 95% of the times I use 800
You can't, it's normal. Video is by default 16:9 format and your photo is 4:3 (1.33:1). Thats why your screen back on yoru camera is 4:3. So when switching to video, it will show you what you will actually capture.
Depends on your output. I prefer to use the same settings (log) and convert to rec709 outside of my cam, either in the external monitor or in an ATEM as an example. If you don't have an external monitor that can convert or if you go from camera to stream, then you will need to film in Rec709. Hope that answers your question?
I messed up two of the chapter titles. They are duplicate texts after a dumb copy paste, but content in the chapters as well as the links are right. I appologize for that
Are you thinking of that .265 on PC requires studio? Well yeah, that is bad. If you got a cloud account at Adobe you can transcode it with Media Encoder, but it's not an ideal workflow. I think the studio is worth it as it's a one time fee and the GPU hardware accelerator in Studio is worth it alone... .265 is included in Davinci free for Mac ;)
Hi so filming H.265 files won’t open in davinci resolve 18 free but will in the studio version? I’m using windows 10 with davinci resolve 18 free version at the moment
Yes, unfortunately you need studio for .265 on Windows. The upside of Studio is the GPU hardware acceleration. That alone is worth the Studio. The .265 will be a bonus ;)
Hey this is an old comment, have you worked out how to do this? I can share if you still need the info! You can edit in the free version of resolve, just need to convert the footage. Takes only a few minutes!
It all depends on what you want to achieve. I found unlimted recording also, but only after a lot of different settings and tests (5h on 4k60). Got a video coming on this soon :)

Then I would prob use C1-C3 for photo settings and just keep turning that dial between photo and video.
I should have videos for both Custom Shooting modes (C1-C3) and best video settings.
If shooting in Clog, why does the ISO have to be 800?
It doesn’t have to, but the base ISO (standard) for CLOG3 is 800. So it’s what CLOG is calibrated for. It gives most dynamic range and least amount of noise. I sometimes use 400, but 95% of the times I use 800
After switching from photo mode to video mode, there is blackness at the top and bottom of the screen, how can I turn it off?
I would be very happy if you answer immediately.
You can't, it's normal. Video is by default 16:9 format and your photo is 4:3 (1.33:1). Thats why your screen back on yoru camera is 4:3. So when switching to video, it will show you what you will actually capture.
If I don’t do any color grading should i just keep log off?
Yes, LOG gives you more dynamic range, but requires post processing.
Commercial look!!
You approve? I'm always nervous when I post...
@@persvanstrom sure!! Awesome job man
@@pedrolapi4531 do you have any questions or thoughts you would like me to cover in a future video? If you don't me asking 😉
Du får en follow baserat på tavlan i bakgrunden! Spårvagnen!
Tackar ödmjukast 🙏 God Jul
Towards the end you mentioned the name of someone who teaches color grading and said there would be a link below to that person. I don’t find it.
You are so right, I accidentally replaced that with a generic description (opsie). His name is Darren Mostyn and I will add a link in the description.
@@persvanstrom Thank you so much. Again.
Same setting live streaming??
Depends on your output. I prefer to use the same settings (log) and convert to rec709 outside of my cam, either in the external monitor or in an ATEM as an example. If you don't have an external monitor that can convert or if you go from camera to stream, then you will need to film in Rec709. Hope that answers your question?
I messed up two of the chapter titles. They are duplicate texts after a dumb copy paste, but content in the chapters as well as the links are right. I appologize for that
Sadly The only problem with Clog is you need the studio version on Resolve to edit it unfortunately. 😔
DO NOT CLICK RECORD ON THE CAMERA. HIT RECORD ON THE NINJA V SCREEN. I end up with unlimited recording time
It all depends on what you want to achieve. I found unlimted recording also, but only after a lot of different settings and tests (5h on 4k60). Got a video coming on this soon :)
NTSC is a completely different format than PAL.
Yes, Thx 🙏
Now I know I know nothing about video recording
Awww 🥰 you know plenty ❤️ I always feel like I don’t know enough, but think it’s just part of us knowledge hungry minds 😘👍
I can’t see any chapters.
They are there now, I missed up, twice. Read sticky and thx for pointing it out. Much appreciated
@@persvanstrom No problem, great video btw. I wasn’t fully aware of the CinemaGammut issue, since I always used BT709.
@@ElBoyoElectronico Atomos has answered and confirmed, but no fix yet. Thank you for your nice comment as well. I'm still trying to figure out which level I should place my videos at. More or less advanced :) Any input or future requests are most welcome
@@persvanstrom Yeah, it is hard to hit the right level. When I watched your video, I actually thought about that too, since the beginning was (for my personal knowledge-level) rather basic, but the end of the video was rather advanced and very helpful to me. Maybe less topics in one video and therefore more information on the subject might be a good idea (e.g. a separate video on colorgrading), but I think you are on a good path. I like your delivery and as a R6 shooter am always happy to hear more about it.
Thank you very much for this input. I'm super grateful. I just got my C70 as well, so will do more video content and also more about using R6 as a B-cam for commercial use :) Also, any specific topic you want me to make a video about, just let me know.
No use, giving nonstop lecture and running menu step up quickly. No good instructional video - GAVE UP. There are other good R6 set up videos!!
I’m sorry you didn’t like the video. What would you like me to change to make it good for you?
