Hi friends! I love the conversation that is happening here. Please please please try to avoid spoilers in your comments as I still haven't watched any of the other movies and want to be surprised by them! :) May the Force be with you!
"Do or do not" and "That is why you fail" are some of the greatest lessons you can be taught about life, and they came from a movie about "laser swords and space wizards"
"There is no try" is applicable to a small handful of things in life, but trying is one of the most important things in most endeavors. Success so often hinges on self-confidence, that can only be built through practice. For people to fear failure so much is a miserable self-repressing pattern. It kinda makes sense for a jedi, as they can see the future, and simply choose their actions according to the best outcome they can foresee. "Try" means nothing for all their intents and purposes.
I had issues with that line, as the one thing i hated most was making promises i couldn't keep. "I'll try" is the best response that is honest. But my favorite workaround is "fuck it, full send"
@@VergilArcanis but trying doesn't instill confidence, which is what Yoda was teaching Luke. We can all try things, but confidence in the result that matters. I can try and eat something I've never eaten, but don't know if I like it or not. If I like it great, what Yoda is teaching Luke is that basically "trust me bro, you'll like it" but Luke's lack in conference is what made him not believe he could get the XWing out of the swamp.
Is Darth Vader really Luke's father? Who is "The Other" that Yoda spoke of? Will they be able to rescue Han Solo? Imagine having to wait 3 years for those answers. That's what we had to do waaaay back when. It was not an easy wait.
@@CristyReacts Thanks for the reply. some other instances from 4&5 came to mind in the meantime: (Spoilers, but if you aren't spoilered what are you doing here :P) In ep 4 Obi-Wan says Luke's father was "the best starpilot in the galaxy". Then in the trench run, Luke is the only one to not get hit by Vader's piloting and shooting. In ep 5, Yoda says that there's "much anger in [Luke]... like his father." Yoda later identifies anger and aggression as gateways to the dark side When Luke battles Imaginary Vader on Dagobah, the scene ends with a Skywalker's face behind the mask And of course "Darth Vader" sounds like "dark father"
It wasn't foreshadowing. Except by accident. It wasn't planned in advance. They were making Empire and said hey let's make Vader Luke's dad. That would be fun.
18:00, I think what a lot of people miss is that Han is actually very good at reading people. He can see that Leia likes him and he likes her. So all of this teasing is his way of saying "I care about you and I think you care about me. Am I right?" He has been basically wearing his heart on his sleeve for her the entire movie and being vulnerable.
Yoda pretending to be a rando is a callback to a Samurai film trope called, "The Stranger on the Road". The idea is on his initial journey to the place he will be trained, the student doesn't know the face of the teacher, so the teacher tests the morality of the student, by disguising himself as a helpless person, to see if they are worthy of the great power they will gain, from being taught how to use the sword.
Han knew the whole time that Leia loved him. he spent the whole movie trying to get her to admit it to herself. that’s why his reply of “I know.” is the most fitting thing he could’ve said
Yes, and in addition to that, Han didn’t need words to tell Leia that he loved her. Han is a man of action. Throughout the film his actions consistently and emphatically demonstrated his feelings for Leia.
There is a background story on the "I Know" answer. They spent days filming the carbonite scene, and it was almost a disaster. Everyone on the set get tired, frustrated, angry.. the dialog was changed a hundred times over, nothing was working. The I love you and I love you too was just so lame with the director and Harrison Ford it just wasn't working. So Harrison, good with improvising lines spontaneously came out and said "I Know!" and it worked. Everyone was pleased, and their scene there together ended on a high note.
I was born in 1970 and I liked Star Wars, but this is the movie I was obsessed with. It was better in every way for me and no other Star Wars movie has ever come close to it since.
SO TRUE. 1980: I was 13 and saw it early in a radio promotion. Every seat was filled - people went nuts. Clearly the absolute hands-down best movie of the series. Rogue One was 2nd for me.
The Empire Strikes Back is one of the rare sequels that actually topped the original movie it followed. The personalities of its characters are expanded on and it opens up more about the universe it takes place in and reveals a bit more about Darth Vader and his relationship to the Emperor, who was only ever mentioned in passing in the first movie.
Spiderman 2, Aliens, Terminator 2, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Beverley Hills Cop 2, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Godfather 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, X-men 2: X-men United, The Dark Knight. Mad Max: Fury Road, LotR: Two Towers. People need to stop saying this....
@@KenjaTimu Yeah, "I love you, too" being more romantic is exactly the reason he didn't say it. Plus, he had to get her back for her acting cold the entire start of the movie.
That line was perfect, and The Empire Strikes Back is my goto movie to show how a romance subplot should be done in an action movie. It is woven into the action and doesn't being the entire movie to a halt for the couple to flirt or go on a date.
My dad took me and my best friend to see this the Saturday it opened. We had to wait in line 6 hours to get a ticket to a showing. I'll never forget that day, it was such an experience (I was 8). And when the famous line is said the entire theater gasped in unison. It was incredible.
I love how Chewie laughs when Leia says "I don't know where you get your delusions, laserbrain" lol The revelation of Darth Vader being Luke's father is one of the biggest, if not THE biggest "Say whaaaaaaaaa?!" moment in movie history.
@@CristyReacts It's no wonder he's my number one favorite non-human character. That moment and when he starts to strangle Lando after Boba Fett leaves with Han.
@@CristyReacts if Leia frustrates you don't watch LOST. Kate is 1000 times worse. The actress seems like a total sweetheart tho. She said she hated that.
A Force user can manipulate objects with the Force, including your own body. That means you can do things like super jumps, run super fast, do flips and acrobatics that the person normally couldn't do. They can also guide their body while falling like Luke did.
After the prequels I imagined he had a picture of Padme in there somewhere--whether to spur his dark side or give him a memory of what once was, I'm not sure.
"How can he be your father?!?" They literally made three prequel movies explaining it. That's why many probably told you to watch Episodes 4, 5, and 6 first. The prequel trilogy spoils the surprise. Though it's not really much of a surprise these days. It's probably the most well-known movie twist ever and has become such a pop culture moment that even people who have never seen the Star Wars movies know it or have heard it in some way.
Actually, tons of reactors don’t know this twist. And given most reactors are millennials, I can’t imagine Gen Z or Gen Alpha know it well. I think it’s completely fallen out of public consciousness for many people.
I’ve change my opinion over time as to watching the episodes in order. I feel watching the originals first helps the new watcher experience the allure, charisma, excitement that captivated fans from the beginning. And by watching the prequels you get “ohhh now I get it” and they pull you further into the overall story.
Something to keep in mind, the in world time between A New Hope and Empires Strikes back was three years. That means Han and Leia had three years of working closely together, so the relationship had a lot more depth than what we see on film.
Worth mentioning (thanks to Jill Beaurup for pointing it out): Han and Leia squabbling in the corridor was so routine that nebody gave it a second thought. And the two ofthem could moveto let people around them without missing a beat in their arguments. It takes practice. About Lando, if you wereresponsibleforthe safety of thousands of people and Darth Fricking Vader knocked on your door and told you to play along, would you refuse? Don't think so. And Lando thought the deal he'd done would keep Han, Leia and the others safe. Vader kept changing the deal time and again until he couldn't take it anymore, despite the risk to himself AND the people he was responsible for. Please notice that he tried to pull Leia out of Vader's notice in the Carbonite chamber. He was trying to protect them to the limit of his capabilities. That were very narrow.
Lando, like Han, was a rogue with a heart of gold. He'd been a responsible leader of Cloud City, like Han was in the Rebellion, for a while, and was put in an impossible position with Vader showing up and making demands.
I love love love this journey for you! As a kid born in 1972, i was too young to "get" all of the story elements and the big reveals, so you are experiencing something i never could. So thank you for sharing the journey with us!
It is almost unbelievable that after over 40 years since the premiere of this film, there are still people who do not know this iconic, greatest in the history of cinema sentence: I am your father. The next two iconic sentences from the history of cinema: "I'll be back" and "You shall not pass" you must learn as soon as possible by watching films in which these sentences appear. This last sentence in particular is said in an amazing scene in the film, which is an adaptation of the greatest fantasy novel in history.
In this movie you see that Vader has a slight emotional character arc. You see him as brutal throughout the movie, and then he doesn't choke Admiral Piett after the Millennium Falcon disappears. He is too preoccupied with Luke and his failure to turn Luke to the dark side, so he decides to let it go. At least that's my take on it.
Great reaction :) It was fun to watch! Regarding the cave scene, when Luke asks "What will I find?", Yoda answers "Only what you take with you". The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things: 1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader) 2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most and cause him to fall to the Dark Side 3. It foreshadows the relation between Luke and Vader. Regarding Vader's actions on Bespin, Vader was *not* trying to hurt or kill Luke. He was testing him and trying to disable/capture him. You can see how he starts going relatively easy on him and slowly increasing the pressure. It's only when Luke manages to land a hit that Vader stops playing and he almost immediately disarms him. If Vader wanted to kill him right from the start, it would have been a MUCH shorter fight because Luke was not ready for that fight at all. Another thing I want to mention: Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force. When Luke had a vision of Han and Leia's misfortunes on Bespin, it was the future he saw. Vader purposefully made Han and Leia suffer, going as far as torturing Han to use them as bait to draw Luke to him. This means he knew, as a Force user, that due to their relationship, their suffering would cause a ripple in the Force that Luke would sense in the past and come to rescue them. Hence Obi Wan saying "It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That's why your friends are made to suffer." Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have consequences in the past and shape the present to his designs. This is also why Obi-Wan and Yoda urged him not to go (not play into Vader's hand), and the story proves them right : Luke does not help Leia and the gang at all. They escape all on their own. On the contrary, they end up having to rescue *him*.
19:33 "There is a great _disturbance_ in the _Force."_ "Yes. I have _felt_ it." "I have no _doubt_ this _boy_ is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker." "Wait a minute. I have a son?" "No. Not you. Anakin Skywalker." "I have a _son._ Well that's... _wonderful!_ I've... gotta tell _everybody!"_ _"Wait!_ Come back!" "Hey, Stormtroopers. Have you heard? I have a son!" "Hey, bounty hunters. Have you heard the news? I have a son!" "Hey, little droid that rolls around on the floor and never really _does_ anything. Have you heard? I have a son!" _"Oh,_ this is wonderful! I can't wait to _meet_ him!"
You are just the sweetest Cristy! I really appreciate your curiosity of the Star Wars universe. That’s part of what makes the original trilogy so brilliant. It’s a fantasy epic that takes place in another Galaxy, so that allows for a lot of creativity with the various worlds, aliens, technology, and mythologies being explored. It makes the viewer curious to learn more. The horse-like creature they are riding is called a Tauntaun. It’s a form of reptilian mammal native to the planet Hoth. Their thick skin helps them survive the arctic conditions of Hoth, but they can’t handle the extreme cold at night. As you see, the Tauntauns can be utilized like horses or camels for traveling across the ice planet. Thanks to their claws, they can burrow into the snow for warmth, climb icy surfaces, scrape away ice for food. The alien creature that attacked Luke and his Tauntaun is called a Wampa. Hoth is home to various clans of Wampas which dwell in the icy caves of the planet. They appear to be heavily inspired by the Yeti. Your reaction to the shocking reveal that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father is priceless. The story of how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader is explored in greater detail in the prequel trilogy, Episodes I-III. It also explores the fall of the Old Republic, the rise of the Galactic Empire, how the Emperor corrupted Darth Vader into coming over to the Dark Side, and why Vader has to wear that suit to keep him alive. So I won’t give too much away lol. The Cave of Evil on Dagobah contains a powerful concentration energy from the Dark Side of the Force. When Luke enters the cave, he is a confronted by a manifestation of this dark energy, which symbolically takes the form of Darth Vader. The visions Luke experiences in this cave represent not only his past and future, but also his possible future. Princess Leia and Han Solo are definitely a thing. There is a mutual attraction between the two, and even though they often bicker with each other, they slowly fall in love. As for Leia and Luke, they do love each other, but not in the way you think. You’ll find out in Return of the Jedi! 🫶🏻
Not only did three years pass in real life between films. But three years passed between the destruction of the death star, and the imperial attack on Hoth. Han and Leia had been involved for some time. Han did not pay back Jabba. Instead, he stayed with the rebellion for her. The bounty Hunter, that Han mentioned during the argument was his excuse for leaving since he felt he wasn’t getting anywhere with her. Despite the fact they both love each other, they are incredibly stubborn he’s a scoundrel, and she is so caught up in the cause that she won’t allow herself to express intimacy or even love for anybody. The entire point of their argument throughout the story was Han trying to get her to admit it. Which she finally did at the cost of his life. The line was improvised but “I know” was his way of saying “See? I won. I knew you loved me.”
G'day it's Steven from down under Star Wars has played an important part of my life particularly the first three movies, and Empire has always been my favorite, to be honest I must've watched it hundreds of times since I was a boy. "THE FORCE IS STRONG WITH THIS ONE"
Hey, Cristy! This is most people's favorite installment and widely considered to be the best Star Wars film. It certainly is mine. Young people who came of age with the Prequel trilogy often cite Episode III as their favorite. "Empire" has four strikingly distinct environments, an amazing opening battle, the Yoda reveal, the romantic sparring, a deeper explanation of the Force, Lando's treachery and redemption, the presence of fan favorite Boba Fett, the loss of Han, the Vader revelation and the cliffhanger ending. It is a wild escapist ride that packs an emotional wallop! Mark Hamill had a terrible car accident prior to filming and underwent facial reconstructive surgery. Already a part of the screenplay, the WAMPA attack on Hoth became an in-story way to explain his new look and the make-up department enhanced his barely-visible scars. Han eviscerating the TAUN TAUN is an authentic form of arctic and/or cold weather survival. He stuffed Luke's hypothermic body in the still-warm carcass of the animal wrapping him in its innards in order to keep him from freezing to death. People have done this to survive. I love it when people freak out watching that scene! BACTA is the liquid in the healing cylinder. It is a bacterial compound with regenerative properties that is the standard medical treatment for all injuries in the Star Wars galaxy. Yoda's odd little voice is provided by his puppeteer Frank Oz who voices many Jim Henson Muppets like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Animal as well as Sesame Street characters like Cookie Monster, Bert and Grover! Yoda pretended to be a grubby, eccentric hermit simply to get an honest reaction out of Luke that would reveal his character. It's a test like those of the gods in Greek mythology who appear as deformed peasants to see how the hero will behave toward the lowliest person. The new player Vader was kneeling before is the Emperor! The same actor plays him in all his appearances across the saga.
The MYNOCKS are bat-sized creatures that feed off electrical energy and are starship pests. Sometimes they live symbiotically in the gullets of space leviathans like the EXOGORTH that swallowed the 'Falcon'! I find it amusing how social norms have changed. I've watched a number of millennials view Star Wars for the first time now on UA-cam and quite a few young women are APPALLED by Han Solo's behavior! When these movies came out, Harrison Ford became an instant mega-star and sex symbol because of his devil-may-care swagger and brash forwardness. He subscribed to the "treat a Queen like a whore and a whore like a Queen" school of seduction and WOMEN LOVED HIM FOR IT!!! You can tell he's a softie underneath which is what makes him endearing but it seems young women today in the era of woke find him INSUFFERABLE!!! All boys thought he was the coolest guy ever. It's funny how times change. I'm relieved his charms weren't lost on you, Cristy! Lol. Leia was a feminist icon back in the day! An independent woman of means comfortable wielding power, unafraid to get her hands dirty and dedicated to a serious cause! A whole generation of young boys and girls grew up with her as a role model. Talented screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan was responsible for all the fun romantic banter in this film. As Leia is Alderaanian royalty and Han Solo is a Corellian street kid, it's basically a CLASS ISSUE preventing her from accepting her feelings for Solo. The constant arguing is their foreplay as he wears her down with his roguish charm. Lol. Harrison Ford's famous "I know." reply to Leia's declaration of love was ad-libbed by Ford who wasn't feeling the more generic "I love you, too." line from the script. Director Irvin Kershner and George Lucas kept it in the movie. It's perfect for the character. I've seen some young female reactors take DEEP OFFENSE! Keep in mind that Solo has been upfront with Leia about his feelings for her for THREE YEARS at this point! She's the one who has been coy with him despite her obvious attraction. Her admission is what HE'S been patiently waiting for and he matter-of-factly tells her he's fully aware of how she feels. It's the answer SHE DESERVES! Lol. The movies were remastered in the late '90s to promote the upcoming Prequel trilogy with some CGI overlays of the original practical effects but this installment has the fewest egregious changes and looks much like it did in 1980. The Wampa feeding, some aerial shots of Cloud City, a clearer view of the Emperor and some windows cut into corridors Leia, Lando and Chewie are running through at the end which look out onto the Bespin cityscape are the only updates I can think of. People were SO INVESTED in this franchise back in 1980 that scrutiny during production was INTENSE!! They had the actor in the Vader suit, David Prowse, speak different lines to Luke to conceal the reveal even though Hamill was told what to react to. Dummy scripts were used on set to throw off snoops and spies. James Earl Jones was told the truth just prior to recording the scene. When Jones uttered those immortal words on screen, "No, I am your father.", audiences collectively GASPED, SCREAMED, CRIED, FAINTED and SHOUTED their dismay! It remains one of cinema's MOST ICONIC MOMENTS.
Seriously. Leia never shows any real interest in Luke in that way. Outside of trying to make Han jealous, the relationship is just friendly. Leia is one of those kiss their friends on a cheek kind of people.
The "I know" scene to me, was the perfect thing to say from a man who knew that the woman he loves will probably never see him again, he would either die in carbon freezing or die later. He would rather let her go so she could live her life, than have her look back in loss for a man who loved her. It has more weight for the characters involved to simply say "I love you", it is an understanding that only they can fully comprehend. All throughout the movie, they where fighting for dominance in the relationship. Leia gave in and said "I love you" first, but Han's reply was basically "No, you won." It's not a love language that newer generations understand, but the older generation enjoy that love banter. It is consensual, it is just different and more crass.
I love how everybody has a different reaction to Vader choking someone through a video communication, some people say FaceTime some people say zoom some say video chat. Hilarious. I wonder what they Will say in the future?
14:00 this is the scene Spiderman was referring to in Captain America Civil War when they went to take down Ant Man. "there was this scene in this really old movie"
Fighter squadrons will have their own individual radio identification call sign. Here the radio sign was actually the same as the squadron. During my time in the USN I was a part of two fighter squadrons VFA-31 Tomcatters and the VFA-102 Diamondbacks. VFA-31's radio callsign is Felix while VFA-102 is Diamond.
Great raw reaction! About Lando. Of cource he was a bit naive to trust Vader and accept his bargain terms but he did this not because of cowardice. Remember that Lando was responsible for Cloud City and all people in it, so he tried to save them from Vader and empirial forces.
In the original script, Han answered "I love you too" to Leia before being freezed, but both the director and Harrison Ford thought it didn't feel like Han to say that, and after several takes, they still didn't feel it was right so the director just told Harrison not to think about it and just go with it. It was then that he said "I know" and when they were done with the take, the director felt like that was exactly something Han Solo would say. Confident and cocky like the smuggler he is.
Vader didn't try to kill Luke. He could've from the very beginning of their duel, but he tried to turn him first, just like he said to The Emperor - "He will join us or die".
You can see how easy Vader went on him, fighting one-handed, disarming Luke but not taking advantage--all to carbon freeze him. But as time goes on and Luke refuses to buckle under Vader's onslaught, that famous Anakin impatience pops up, until finally that hit to his shoulder by Luke makes him lop off Luke's hand in a blaze of dark side anger.
"I know" is actually a fantastic response to leia. It concludes han and leia's arch in the movie. The whole entire movie, han was trying to get leia to admit and accept her feelings for him. Han is continuously trying to break down the emotional barriers leia put up. When leia finally says that she loves him, it's the first time in the movie that she is being fully honest with him. Hans response is affirmation of leia's true feelings and acknowledgement that dispite everything she said and did in the movie he knew that she really did love him. Han doesn't need to say "i love you too" because he's already made it obvious what his feelings for her are.
I do love Cristy reactions as someone who basically doesn’t know what has happens in these movies and to see her reactions to date. Can’t wait for the next movie reaction.
28:04 "You should have not... made a deal with them." Unfortunately, that was never an option. The Empire really never gave Lando a choice. What do you do if you want to keep the Empire from taking Cloud City from you? Either you have to make a deal with _them_ or you have to make a deal with someone who can hold them at bay. Now who can hold the Empire at bay? No one. If they want to take Cloud City from you, no one can prevent it. That means he _had_ to deal with them; them and no one else. Now what do you do if you strike a deal with the Empire and the Empire violates it? Well, you can _complain_ to someone, but who? Who is going to be in a position to _do_ something about it? Who is going to be in a position to inflict some kind of _penalty_ on the Empire? No one. Fate dealt Lando a _terrible_ hand.
I always loved how when Leia calls Han those names the only thing he reacts to is her insulting his looks, i.e. scruffy looking, not his intelligence when she calls him half-witted.
"...only 3 years after the first one" Uh excuse me? ONLY 3 YEARS!!!! J/K...I know the context was the actors "growth". But, back then...can you imagine the agony of those of us who were around then having to wait 3 years for answers? It was such torment. Great reaction.
Someone might have already mentioned this... but in 1977, the movie was simply called "Star Wars". Short, short version of the story.... George Lucas began working on the idea that eventually became Star Wars pre-1975. He eventually settled on the idea of a massive space saga with a beginning, middle, and end spanning decades... Only 20th Century Fox was interested in funding the movie, but they made George Lucas cut down his story to a single movie, 120 minute's long. So... Lucas took the most exciting part of his larger story, a part that could stand on it's own, and THAT is what became the script. He had NO idea the kind of success that was headed his way. ALL OF US... who grew up with these movies kept waiting and dreaming for "The Clone Wars" mentioned in the first movie... we all knew there was a prequal story... and we finally got to watch Episode 1, and the beginning of the prequal movies in 1999! After Star Wars became a success, 20th Century Fox green lit more movies. So... George continued his story. BUT because he began the first movie in the middle of his massive space saga, he renamed Star Wars (1977) into Star Wars Episode 4, a New Hope... he re-released it in 1979 (I watched in at a drive-in theater) to get people ready for Episode 5, The Empire Strikes Back... in 1980. So... since 1979-1980, all "main story" Star Wars movies are identified as "episodes 1, 2, 6, 7, etc..." each episode is a continuation of one story. So... now you know why the strange naming sequence. Enjoy the rest of the series! :)
I will never forget the time then i became Star Wars fan , of course my entire journey of Star Wars started with episode one and later all other episodes joined in , old style classic movies of Star Wars saga which with my both parents grew up in to these day leaving me speechless , i remember important fact which was mentioned by Ewan Mcgregor who played younger version of Obi Wan Kenobi , during the making production of Revenger Of The Sith he mentioned that he always was inspired by Star Wars and his dad took him to see episode four The New Hope , that was the first time he saw a character like Obi Wan Kenobi played by late actor Alec Guinness and was left inspired by his character which played him decades later. I'm gonna say that i love so much each episode of Star Wars saga , even now i'm 30 years old and i still have goosebumps while watching these iconic cinematic pictures over and over again. All the cinematic special effects , all the duels with lighsabers , battles in space between good and evil sides will always be part of my life , so as Star Wars episodes , thank you so so much Cristy for taking us for an adventure across the galaxy while facing amazing battles in outer space , witnessing blood boiling lightsaber duels. I love your reactions very much ❤❤❤ like our favorite character Obi Wan Kenobi likes to say - may the force be with you. Always ❤
So i was born in '81, did not see the star wars series til 1987. So much nostalgia. I used to watch these movies back to back on saturdays as a kid on vhs....that we recorded from HBO back in 1987 with a vcr. The memories of this are amazing. Great video reaction.
- If you really watch the fight between Luke and Vader, Vader starts the fight just using one hand, almost toying with Luke because he knows that Luke is his son (that you didn't know the biggest spoiler in movie history/pop culture was amazing!!!). - Leia is in many ways a badass. However, one of the things about the way her arc was written is weird. Don't worry...the Leia, Luke, and Han thing gets weirder. You're welcome! After Return of the Jedi, you'll see what I mean. - The "I love you", "I know" dialogue...actually will become very romantic. However, it was written that Han Solo was supposed to say "I love you" as well. Unfortunately, it was not working, so Harrison improvised " I know" with the blessing of director Irvin Kershner and George Lucas. It worked, and they kept it in the film. - The chemistry between Harrison Ford (Han) and Carrie Fisher (Leia) was partly due to the fact that during the filming of the first movie, the two had an affair off-screen. See Carrie Fisher's book, The Princess Diarist for more about that. The funny thing was...NOBODY knew that it happened until years later!!! Mark Hamill (Luke) was completely blindsided when he found out...because...if you watch the clip in my next note, Carrie Fisher could not keep secrets! - The "No, I am your father" scene. The best explanation of this is to watch this clip of Mark Hamill (Luke) telling the story on Graham Norton during press for The Force Awakens (no spoilers except seeing three cast members of that film), complete with a spot-on Harrison Ford impression: ua-cam.com/video/OsSKFlk8oEo/v-deo.html
Dear Cristy, thank you for your reactions! Your reactions are great and I very much like your comments and thoughts. You seem to be a very nice person and I wish you all the best. Regarding mental health. What you said is true. Mental health is very important and not always discussed a lot. I can relate to get great help from professionals when I had anxiety and also a depression. I´m very happy that you got helped by therapy in 2014! Also, always remember that you are a very good person and also a very valuable person. Thank you again and take care. Br Mattias
The one thing about the added special effects is that there were many new shots added. However, the bulk of the show is as original, and that's no small feat what they accomplished. Mark Hamill was in an accident and it changed his facial appearance somewhat. That swat to the face by the ice monster was intended to explain it away in the story as to why he looked different. The collective gasp in the theater when Vader said he was Luke's father.....never forget that moment. Also, Vader wasn't trying to kill Luke. He was maneuvering him, toying with him. He even said, Don't make me destroy you." Meaning, he was fully able to do it if he wanted to.
In the scenes were Luke escapes from the Wampa's lair and when Obi-Wan first appears as a force ghost the weather outside was so cold that both scenes were shot 15 feet outside of the doors of the hotel the cast and crew were using during filming. In 2020 members of the 501st legions blizzard corps were once again on scene this time leaving bronze plaques at the bottom of the hill Mark Hamill rolled down and at the field where the AT-AT attack took place.
In one of the book versions of this movie during that scene where Chewie is getting the pieces of 3PO it demonstrates why you should never anger a wookie. That game of keep away Chewie ends by picking up one of the Ugnaughts and tossing him into the furnace which makes all the others smartly scatter in every other direction they can.
The cave vision Luke experiences had a double meaning behind it. The first being if he faced Vader at that point in time he would not survive, the other was the cave telling him if he was not careful and did not learn to control his anger, he would follow in Vader's footsteps.
Before Carrie Fisher passed away she revealed in her biography that she and Harrison Ford had an affair during this time. But she was chasing him and in love with him but he was not so much into her. So when Leia says I love you and Solo says I know (he was supposed to say it back), the improvisation is a reflection on the real life relationship of Carrie and Harrison rather than the relationship of Leia and Han. So I've heard.
As a guy, I thought the 'I know' line was super romantic. It's expressing that he's going to his possible death *knowing* without any doubt that he's loved. It's not the same, but there was a book (fun, but not a great book) I read a long time ago where a friend of the protagonist was murdered by the villain and later he expressed regret at not being able to tell him how much their friendship meant to him before he died. Near the end of the book another friend was also in danger of being murdered by the villain and the protagonist tells her "You're my friend and I love you." so she would know how much he valued their friendship in case one of them didn't make it. It makes me tear up just thinking about the scene.
Of this trilogy, this was the best. Thank you for this reaction. I love seeing younger people finding this world. I remember seeing this in the theater, when it first was released and the reaction of the audience when Vader confessed to Luke. That became the talk of all talks. Han has been showing his affection to Leia through two movies. His "I know" was a bit of a payback for never hearing it from her. Smooth and it wasn't a time for romance.
Today "I am your father" is considered one of the great plot twists in movie history. Back in 1980 the production team went to great lengths to hide the twist before release. They even filmed what i call dummy scenes with completely different dialogue just to keep the crew from knowing. On release day only a very few people actually knew what the true scene was.
Cristy! I have to tell you that I enjoyed your reaction much more than other reactors because you didn't go in with so much foreknowledge. Almost every other reactor confessed they knew Darth Vader was Luke's father, which kind of deflated the fun of watching a reactor. You seem to be going in fresh, and it's a lot of fun. Also, you were somewhat fooled by Yoda's claim he would take Luke to Yoda. Again, every other reactor has spent so much time on social media that there was nothing to surprise them. Going in blind is a rare treat on some movies that are so well known, and this was a treat! :)
Saying that the rebels should stand their ground and fight the empire was honestly pretty funny when the empire pretty much immediately shows that standing your ground is not an option. Also the funny, or sad, thing about dak (Luke's gunner) is that he got killed by a malfunction of his own equipment. He felt like he could take on the whole empire himself but the universe simply said no.
I love watching your reactions. Star Wars will take you on character arches you could never imagine. I can't wait to see you continue with the world of Star Wars.
13:45 if you remember, Spiderman did this to Antman during the battle between #TeamCap vs #TeamIronMan at the airport in Captain America: Civil War. This was the 'really old' movie Spiderman was talking about when devising his plan 😆
Yaaaay! I needed this today so much. It was the first movie I ever watched in a theater. I was 5 & already loved Star Wars since it was a staple at my house (older sister, parents). I still remember loving but being scared of Yoda(🤭) and being confused ab how Vader could be Luke’s daddy. Hahaha. Afterwards I learned the whole “birds & the bees”. Yep, found out how babies are made bc of Empire😂
I was 7, and my family went to see it at the drive-in, but I wasn't really into the series yet, I was still focused on stuff exclusively for kids. I didn't pay attention to most of the movie, I only have a vague memory of the part when Han slices the taun taun, I kept looking around at the other screens to see if I could catch any cartoons (even though I couldn't hear them).
Cristy, the snow creature that tried to eat luke is the Hoth Wampa, they made a big action figure of him compared to the 3.75 inch tall star wars figures in the early 1980s his figure was like 5 inches tall? and the yoda figure was like only 1 inch tall? and he was cute and came with an orange rubber snake and a brown cane and a cloth robe.
Hi friends! I love the conversation that is happening here. Please please please try to avoid spoilers in your comments as I still haven't watched any of the other movies and want to be surprised by them! :)

Yes. Incredible!!
(Spoilers, but if you aren't spoilered what are you doing here :P)
In ep 4 Obi-Wan says Luke's father was "the best starpilot in the galaxy". Then in the trench run, Luke is the only one to not get hit by Vader's piloting and shooting.
In ep 5, Yoda says that there's "much anger in [Luke]... like his father." Yoda later identifies anger and aggression as gateways to the dark side
When Luke battles Imaginary Vader on Dagobah, the scene ends with a Skywalker's face behind the mask
And of course "Darth Vader" sounds like "dark father"
It wasn't foreshadowing. Except by accident. It wasn't planned in advance. They were making Empire and said hey let's make Vader Luke's dad. That would be fun.

18:00, I think what a lot of people miss is that Han is actually very good at reading people. He can see that Leia likes him and he likes her. So all of this teasing is his way of saying "I care about you and I think you care about me. Am I right?"
He has been basically wearing his heart on his sleeve for her the entire movie and being vulnerable.
Plus I'm guessing it has been a while since Yoda had seen anyone so he probably wanted to have a little fun with Luke.

There are people who don't know that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Knowledge is not permanent in a society.
The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things:
1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader)
2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most and cause him to fall to the Dark Side
Another thing I want to mention:
Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force.
That's why your friends are made to suffer."
Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have consequences in the past and shape the present to his designs.
This is also why Obi-Wan and Yoda urged him not to go (not play into Vader's hand), and the story proves them right : Luke does not help Leia and the gang at all. They escape all on their own. On the contrary, they end up having to rescue *him*.

You’ll find out
in Return of the Jedi!

G'day it's Steven from down under
Star Wars has played an important part of my life particularly the first three movies, and Empire has always been my favorite, to be honest I must've watched it hundreds of times since I was a boy.
34:39 The greatest plot twist in film history.
I think it is the biggest plot twist ever, I mean it's SECOND TO NONE!!!
Leia´s kiss to Luke it´s clearly to put Han Solo jealous. The real chemistry and horny tension it´s between Han and Leia.
Seriously. Leia never shows any real interest in Luke in that way. Outside of trying to make Han jealous, the relationship is just friendly. Leia is one of those kiss their friends on a cheek kind of people.
Lol I love the phrase "horny tension"
@@CristyReacts 😂
Adding to that, that Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford were dating during the filming of Star Wars.
Exactly, Leia doesn’t like Luke like that.

Only 3 years after the previous one!
For people like me who saw episode IV in the theatre it was an eternity
Can’t wait for the next movie reaction.
his Office as you called it is his Life support/Meditation chamber where he can take his helmet off without dying
28:04 "You should have not... made a deal with them."
Unfortunately, that was never an option.

Thanks, editor. 🤣🤣🤣
Super interesting! Appreciate the info. I'd heard some of it but not all of it.
Always ❤
If I were Captain Needa and I just lost the Millennium Falcon, I would have just taken the whole damn Star Destroyer and ran.
Exactly. BTW Michael Culver (Captain Needa) passed away just 6 weeks ago on 27 February 2024.
@@KamramBehzadWow. Vader sure took a while to accept his apology. RIP Michael Culver
So i was born in '81, did not see the star wars series til 1987. So much nostalgia.
I used to watch these movies back to back on saturdays as a kid on vhs....that we recorded from HBO back in 1987 with a vcr. The memories of this are amazing.
Great video reaction.
It has been a very long time since I have seen someone surprised by the iconic line. Imagine entire packed theater audiences having the same reaction.
Br Mattias
Great reaction hermosa 🔥 love your facial looks at different points ... This adventure with you is going to be awesome ❤❤
I love C-3PO. He only tries to help his friends during their mission, but they're always telling him to shut up. 😂
I'm really, really enjoying your reactions! Thanks, Cristy.
Oh, the surprises aren't done, yet! Having seen each of the original trilogy dozens of times, you are so much fun to watch!
Leia: I’d just as soon kiss a Wookiee!
Han: I can arrange that!
Not sure why, but that always makes me smile.
Fun fact: When filming in Norway, everyone was really cold, except one person. Peter Mayhew. His Chewbacca costume kept him nice and warm.
Congratulations for 20000 subscribers!
I’m enjoying watching you discover Star Wars - look forward to the next one 👍🏻
I kind of love it when Cristy slips into Spanish-"Ay noo ..." 😆
The Empire Strikes Back was the first Star Wars film I remember going to see as a kid in theaters and remains my favorite of the entire saga.
"Lando you betrayin' beetch!" had me rolling. Your reactions throughout this movie were very enjoyable. You have a new subscriber now. Thank you!
Also the episodes 1-3 will also explain the hostility shown to droids in these movies.
13:45 if you remember, Spiderman did this to Antman during the battle between #TeamCap vs #TeamIronMan at the airport in Captain America: Civil War. This was the 'really old' movie Spiderman was talking about when devising his plan 😆
Fun fact: In the original trilogy Yoda's puppeteer and voice actor is Frank Oz. He is also Miss Piggy from the Muppets.
I'm watching the movie on Disney Plus right now on May 4 today! Blessings and HUGS 👑💜

Cristy: 😱 Yes!
Me: oh, my sweet summer child 💀😭
spoilers are bad

I love this story! learning about the birds and the bees because of Star Wars, lol
It was so much fun to see you react to this all time favorite!!
12:16 "You can do that through ZOOM too?!" got me hahaha
I just love first time reactions!!!! It's like when I watched in 1982.......Great job, Cristy!!
7:41 And it can cut off most of the things only a few thing can resist to it
Cristy, the snow creature that tried to eat luke is the Hoth Wampa, they made a big action figure of him compared to the 3.75 inch tall star wars figures in the early 1980s his figure was like 5 inches tall? and the yoda figure was like only 1 inch tall? and he was cute and came with an orange rubber snake and a brown cane and a cloth robe.
Still my favorite out of all 9. Was a treat to see you fall in love with this classic. @Christy
