Without any doubt Fenech did extremely well but wasn't a winner of the day because of fouled punches. Azumah saw Fenech's high strength and determination and decided to go technical instead. While fenech was displaying strength, Azumah was adding point based on technical grounds.
Hmmmm, as a 40 plus year fan of the sport, I thought this was one of the worst decisions I ever saw... and apparently I wasn't alone as it's one of the only fights I can think of that was overturned decades after the fact... I had it 9 - 3, 10 - 4 if I'm generous to Nelson, whom I loved and thought might be a step too high for Fenech who was then attempting to become the quickest to win titles in 4 weight classes and do it as an undefeated fighter... and in this fight Fenech should've got that... that said, we all know it was the beginning of the end for Jeff as Nelson went into the lion's den and put on a clinic... that said, I believe Fenech never recovered from the disappointment of the robbery, and was no longer the beast he once was... he'd lost his mojo... but however you want to cut it, loosing it to Nelson, well there's no shame there... who would you pick in a mythical matchup at 130 with Chavez vs Nelson?
