I carried one when I was a grunt in Baghdad 2007. It was my secondary, I was the DM, but I doubled as the breach man. I ended up doing so much breaching during that deployment, firing so many rounds that I just ended up using it as my primary almost all the time. I trusted that shotgun with my life, and it never once failed, jammed or let me down. And I know for a fact, it was deadly effective. Mossberg 500.

@@french1837 As mine is a section 2 (SGC) firearm, yes, the tube is crimped so it can only hold 2 cartridges (plus the one in the chamber). they can, however, be owned as section 1 (FAC) firearms and in that case there is no restriction.

He had a bunch of machine guns and so I looked into your laws over there (I'm Canadian) and it's just wild to me how fast disarmament can happen, and how far it can go. And it seems based on a YouGov poll I found that the majority of UK residents are in favour of even more restriction or just a total ban. It's happened very fast in Canada too ... and especially recently, so not picking on ya. At least for now, our shotties are safe.
My wife was with me when i bought my 590A1 SPX. She literally rolled her eyes when the guy at the counter opened the box, and there was a bayonet in it. It was worth getting it just for that!

Side note about breeching: if the shotgun is only being used to breech, dry-hull it. Shoot, and sling. Dont pump it and fiddle with the safety, just leave it until the next door and pump before indexing the gun. Jeff Gerwich (Modern Tactical Shooting) talks about it in his shotgun video, SF adopted dry-hulling after a breecher sent a round into his teammate while trying to safe his shotgun during training, they would it simpler and safer to just leave the fired shell in the chamber since the gun basically turns into cruiser-ready condition by default.
Regular civilian. Keeping a shotgun in my car and always carrying a pistol I mentally adopted this concept. I worried about slinging my shotgun while moving with a pistol and for whatever reasons it going off either blowing my head or leg off.
I was a reserve infantryman in the CF for ten years or so, and we didn't have any experience with shotguns, so I got curious and got myself an 870 tactical. Sweet gun, and very versatile.
870 extractor are very subseptible to dirt. Causing feeding issues. Was a fan of them until I dropped mine in the dirt and it wouldn't eject the shells. Now I only use mossberg.
NAVY and MARINES still have their vietnam 870's it was called the MARK 1....The only US ARMY units to have them as far as I know was ohio national guard...all have the bayo lug and are all amazing...yes I have one
I carried a Mossberg 500 during my first tour in Iraq, and I loved it. One of the reasons we still use pump-action shotguns vs semi-auto is you don't always WANT the next round to be chambered. If I'm breaching a door then transitioning to an M4 or pistol, I don't want my shotgun in a red status. After I left AD, I was a manager at a sporting goods store for a couple years, and I always pushed Mossbergs. They're so easy to modify and there's a million different parts for them from buttstocks to pump grips to barrels. Even a novice can swap a field barrel to a home defense barrel in under a minute.
03-05 we had Mossberg 500s and buck shot for breaching because there were no special rounds we were still making it up as we went. I've owned a 500 since 97 and use it for hunting and training. Such a versatile and dependable shotie.
I've never been in the military but I like them for your stated reasons and for me they even sound better when racking a shell compared to the Remington 870.

Did a lot of breaching with the mossberg, Iraq had mostly steel doors, if you don’t shoot it pretty straight on. Your foot with take the ricochets. The pellets will roll straight down the steel doors and it can be bad. I always stood off to the side and kept it as straight on as possible for internal door locks. You really gotta imagine where the locking mechanism is and aim to hit that. Padlocks overseas are cheap and can be knocked off from any angle. Just my experience with it
My Grandfather, I am 74 years old, was Danish and during WW 1 his job was shooting pigeons that were carrying messages, I inherited the Double Barrel 16 gauge shotgun.
1978 greatest Christmas ever. I was 12 years old and my Dad got me a 12 gauge shotgun, Mossberg 500, with 2 barrels. A birdshot barrel and a smooth bore slug barrel. Many of rabbits, pheasant, grouse and deer have been taken with that gun. Still have it today and will pass it to grandson on his 12th birthday. I did have it rebuilt in 2006. Best gun I have ever owned. 🤘😎
Funny, I got my first 500A for my 12th birthday...I wore it out and restored it to new condition...that was 20 years ago. I still fire it from time to time...
I bought the same in the late 70's but mine came with the pistol grip to swap out with the stock. I found that kind of useless but fun, not fun firing 3in mag
30 years before that I was given a Mossburg 410 bolt with a C- lect choke and it was followed by a few Mossburgs but that little 410 is as sweet as they come.
In the late 80's, an interesting character walked into my fathers electronic manufacturing and design company, with 50 590's. He wanted us to convert the guns so that they'd project a laser when the trigger was pulled for a target game system he was making. We used the barrel as a conductor which sent a signal to the laser diodes which were packed in the front of the barrel (making contact with the barrel) and when you squeezed the trigger the firing pin (which was ground down) made contact with a sensor making contact with the barrel and sending the signal up the barrel to the laser. It was a wild and fun project and totally different than the baseball pitching machine controls that we manufactured. Think Duck Hunt but using actual shotguns. Bally-Midway bought the system from him in Las Vegas. Don't know what became of it but it was called "lightshot." I'll never forget that row of guns in our shop and being able to play with them every day.

@@nomercyinc6783 sure, but you put the game in a bar and you'll get a line out the door, at least during our local beta testing in 6 bars. People absolutely loved pumping real shotguns vs some plastic gun made to look like a toy. They made a lot of money $0.50 at a time. The game itself was a big LED screen (about the size of a traditional stand alone arcade game machine like pac-man) and random circles would be drawn and you had to shoot within them before they disappeared to score. The circles got smaller and disappeared faster as the game progressed. There were 2 shotguns per game so 2 people could compete. It was totally randomly generated so you couldn't get used to a pattern. We used infrared lasers shooting through a lens that put it in more of a wide pattern closer to a shotgun and with ir detectors every 5th pixel behind the led screen.
I have a 590A1. Heat shield, bayonet lug, and magpul pump/stock that i added a sling swivel to the heel of. Absolutely love the gun. I want an 18" and for about 5 minutes i contemplated trading it, but realized i couldnt bring myself to do it.
I got my 590A1 years ago and I fell in love with it immediately. Admittedly I did have serious feed issued with it at first but after taking it apart and comparing the innards with my 500 I noticed that the shell retaining bar for the tube magazine was bent a little from the factory which caused it to not release a fresh shell most of the time. All I did was bend it back straight and from then on it has run absolutely flawlessly.
I bought mine about 9 years ago and had the same issue, wasn’t sure what it was since I wasn’t practical with shotguns so I sent it in to mossberg and got it fixed. Possibly a bad batch from that time.
It was a bad batch that made it through QA. I had the same thing and got in touch with Mossberg. The rep apologized and told me I could send it in or they could send me a replacement bar. I got the replacement bar. About a week after getting it the rep sent me an email asking if everything was working ok. I sent them a pic of scraps of paper hanging up at the range with the caption "Works great!".

I had that issue with a 410 Mossberg 500E I bought for my daughter. Called Mossberg, they sent me the new part, solved it in a few minutes. I also have a 870, and it isn't nearly as easy to fix if there is a problem. I appreciate the fact that the Mossbergs are so seviceable by the owner.

I carry a Maverick 88 as my vehicle gun everywhere I go! During my career in the Marine Corps we carried them on Embassy duty and it saved my life. I later carried one on 4 trips to train on the ice cap in Greenland for polar bear defense! I never felt under gunned. They are the multi-tool of the gun world and they have worked for decades!😊

Love this. As a patrol officer, there is a huge mindset nationwide amongst law enforcement that we don't need shotguns anymore because we have patrol rifles. Many agencies have completely gotten rid of their shotguns or converted them to less lethal bean bag guns. I have always maintained the shotgun still has a place in my inventory and that they're not obsolete.
What people don't know is that while a tool in the toolbox in a time of many different weapons platforms, at close range out to 100 yards...the shotgun is utterly devastating..it will always have a place in my opinion...
@myratsalad honestly, it has helped me quite a bit. Maybe try to stop making assumptions like a jackass. What I was referring to is that I've been able to find quite a few police trade in Remington 870s recently, and a few of them have been in great shape. The best part is the shop had so many of them they were letting them go dirt cheap just to get them out the door. Btw, I've always heard it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool instead of running your mouth and eliminating any doubt. Think about that as long as you need to, boy!

When I was in shotgun club, the one instructor was able to shoot 3 clay pigeons out of the air with before the first shell hit the ground. He was running a pump too
It made me flinch. Is that what they teach in the military these days? Cuz instead of flying live shells through the chamber, all you have to do is putcher finger in the loading port and press on the shell retainer thingies to unload the shells from there. Seeing somebody racking 'em through the gun tells me they don't know the weapon.

Well, I mentioned to my 20 year old son that I wanted an 870 Marine magnum some 15 years ago and he never forgot. He bought me one last Christmas and I took pictures with him, me and the shotgun. It's like the Tomahawk. 100 percent highly affective in every scenario .
When I was in LE I was one of the few officers that still chose the shotgun over the AR. Its extremely versatile and over looked by most folks these days.

Pumpshotguns are still used because it's one of the very few things you can leave alone in a room with a marine, and it won't end up broken or pregnant.

I bought my Mossburg 500 when I was 18 years old. It's been 36 years, and it still runs flawlessly. Thousands and thousands of rounds (couldn't even guess how many). I'll never sell it.
I had a 590 in the Navy. When I checked into 3/4 STA PLT in the early 90s, as their Navy Corpsman, I rated a pistol and a shotgun. Very versatile and underused platform.
Carried a mossberg 500 on my first deployment to Iraq. I was a breacher, we had slugs, buckshot, and lockbusters. Hated carrying it, but was cool getting to use it, much like any non normal weapons in the military I guess.
@GraniteStateofMind In other words. Analog let's you feel a vehicle/gun under you. Digital systems/semiautomatic shoguns have less interaction, hence less "feel" to it. I ride a motorcycle with no rider aids, such as abs or traction control. You can't control the bike as well. You can't "feel" the bike as much.

One of my buddies was “doc” in a squad of Rangers. He often breached and held a pump action shotgun to do so, he told me once after shooting the hinges off a door, and breaching, he found that one of the hinges had went into a T man’s skull. His lead said if he found that hinge in his space he’d be getting a visit from MP, anyway he didn’t take the hinge but cool story.

Thank you. I've been saying this for years, and constantly have people trying to argue with me, that a shotgun can't do anything past around 50yds. Now I can send this to serveral of them.
I love the 1897. I have 6 in 12ga and one in 16ga and I use them for Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clay's, pheasant hunting, and I even qualled with one back when I was LEO that is chopped to 18½" to use off-duty. I also use Ithaca M37's and Mossberg 500 and 590's, but for the past 5+ years I use SxS shotguns, most with 18½" barrels, for most things. I grew up since elementary school with shotguns and handguns. My father started me shooting skeet and handgun competitions when I was still in elementary school, and I didn't even have a centerfire rifle until my mid-teens. Because of that, I'm still a huge fan of shotguns and debated furiously with my Chief when he wanted to phase them out. Patrol rifles were a huge step forward, but they aren't a replacement for shotguns for some uses.
I'm 68 now and have had my Remington 870 since I was 12 years old, it of course has the dual rail, and a Cap you can unscrew to clean the magazine tube.
The nice thing about the pump / slide action shotgun is that it will perfectly function and to use any type of shotgun cartridge, and it’s always super fun to pump the action.

In two years as a basic EMT and then 8 years as a paramedic (Advanced EMT) Every (EVERY) person except ONE, that was shot with a shotgun was either dead upon our arrival or expired before reaching the ER. The one patient that survived, was shot with a 20 gauge, loaded with #6 birdshot, distance was across a parking lot (35-40 yards)
Glad to see you covered the Mossberg 5xx series. I've always said that for every Benelli M4 there's 100 Mossbergs 500/590s (or Remington 870s) doing most of the 'legwork'. Whether it be hunting, LEO, Military, they're just cheap, solid quality, and ultra reliable. The Benelli is sure nice, but its the lambo to Mossbergs/Remingtons Corvette... More parts/accessories, more gunsmiths are gona be able to work on them, more ppl will have used them (and thus its 'universal' and any1 can "pick up and use it" no need to inspect how it works).
@djdrack4681 in my experience benelli autos are more reliable than most pumps. I've never owned a 590 but have had several 870s break on me and I've seen a 500 explode in person

I can see the argument, but I've also known ppl who used the living hell out of their 500s (myself incl.) and 870s...and they still run as a "pick it up, no worries. it just works". for a pump to explode I have to question what the person was doing (3.5" shell in a 3" barrel, the classic "puts muzzle underwater gag" where barrel explodes from pressure) etc. It'd be like saying a break action exploded (and no not one of the black powder 'laminated steel' ones). They're all great, but I'd take 3-5x of those over the price of 1x benelli all day. no question asked.

Ran the mossberg 500. Army infantry don’t get too many luxuries, our shotguns don’t even have a rear sight just a bead on the business end. I’ve ran stocked and pistol grip pumps and have breached many doors with it. I’ve conducted IWT and ran breacher courses with it as well as the lead instructor. I trust the mossberg 500 with my life and you should too
I joined the Army in 1979. Pretty much every post had a skeet and trap field. Clinton closed most because we don't want our troops to be interested in shooting. I retired in 1999 and most off duty shooting sports pavilions had been closed. I have been watching the drone war and I can't help but thinking that a nice Ithica 10 gauge would be a real asset. Maybe the Army should reopen the skeet and trap fields.

I used both the full size and shorty models of the M500 in the Army before they replaced them with the 590A1. Awesome firepower. One thing that I advocated way back then was to use buckshot as an are suppression weapon given that one shot is like a burst of sub-machinegun fire. People laughed at me then and most still do now, but gradually more people are beginning to realize that buckshot at 100 or even 200 yards, puts a lot of lead into a wide space downrange. Even if only one pellets hits an enemy soldier, they're going to be severely wounded or even killed. Fired at a group of soldiers and much like a machine gun, it serves the purpose of keeping the enemy's heads down along with a high probability of hitting some of them. The only downside is that it's very limited on magazine capacity. But during an ambush where you just need to get out of a kill zone quickly while laying down immediate suppressive fire, it can be very effective for disrupting an ambush and buying time to move to cover. As a civilian while my primary home defense long gun is an AR-15, I still keep a Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge pump shotgun topped off with Aguila buckshot minishells (using an OpSol Minishell adapter). It gives me a nice shot spread at 7 yards and doesn't over-penetrate while allowing me for a higher magazine capacity. So every now and then that shotgun does bedside home defense duty still.
Mine doesn't run mini shells, and knew my Mossberg 12g wasn't crap, I didn't know there is a mini shell adapter!?? Please tell me more, I'm still needing the tube extension for 3+ rounds
@@ThePatriotParadox Yeah, the OpSol Minishell adapter works with the Mossberg Maverick 88, the Mossberg 500, and the Mossberg 590. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and work really well to insure that it feeds minishells reliably. Just google OpSol adapter and you'll see the company. They're made in Texas and their website has tons of videos showing how it works.
I prefer the 590 (not A1). I’m not on a ship and don’t need a heavy barrel. I also prefer the bead. If I’m using a shotgun, I’m primarily using shot, or I’d be carrying a rifle. The bead is the most effective for moving/fast acquisition point shooting. The mossberg isn’t as smooth as the 870 but I’d argue more robust and you don’t have the lifter in your way when loading. The 870 is smoother due to when the hammer is cocked. The 870 cocks the hammer halfway through the slide action sequence so there’s already momentum on the slide before hitting resistance. The mossberg starts cocking the hammer at the beginning of the cycle. If I could only have one, I’d take the mossberg, but there’s no comparison on how smooth they are.
That bit about the bead sight being best…you made me want to buy another shotgun. Got a 500 that I put an Eotech on and I have an 870 police magnum with the rifle sights. I think you’re right though, simpler is faster/better.

@@french1837 As mine is a section 2 (SGC) firearm, yes, the tube is crimped so it can only hold 2 cartridges (plus the one in the chamber). they can, however, be owned as section 1 (FAC) firearms and in that case there is no restriction.

He had a bunch of machine guns and so I looked into your laws over there (I'm Canadian) and it's just wild to me how fast disarmament can happen, and how far it can go. And it seems based on a YouGov poll I found that the majority of UK residents are in favour of even more restriction or just a total ban. Side note about breeching: if the shotgun is only being used to breech, dry-hull it. Shoot, and sling. Dont pump it and fiddle with the safety, just leave it until the next door and pump before indexing the gun.
Jeff Gerwich (Modern Tactical Shooting) talks about it in his shotgun video, SF adopted dry-hulling after a breecher sent a round into his teammate while trying to safe his shotgun during training, they would it simpler and safer to just leave the fired shell in the chamber since the gun basically turns into cruiser-ready condition by default.

Regular civilian. Keeping a shotgun in my car and always carrying a pistol I mentally adopted this concept. I worried about slinging my shotgun while moving with a pistol and for whatever reasons it going off either blowing my head or leg off.

I was a reserve infantryman in the CF for ten years or so, and we didn't have any experience with shotguns, so I got curious and got myself an 870 tactical. Sweet gun, and very versatile.
As a Sig in brigade we did shotties every year.
870 extractor are very subseptible to dirt. Causing feeding issues. Was a fan of them until I dropped mine in the dirt and it wouldn't eject the shells. Now I only use mossberg.
NAVY and MARINES still have their vietnam 870's it was called the MARK 1....The only US ARMY units to have them as far as I know was ohio national guard...all have the bayo lug and are all amazing...yes I have one
I carried a Mossberg 500 during my first tour in Iraq, and I loved it. One of the reasons we still use pump-action shotguns vs semi-auto is you don't always WANT the next round to be chambered. If I'm breaching a door then transitioning to an M4 or pistol, I don't want my shotgun in a red status.
After I left AD, I was a manager at a sporting goods store for a couple years, and I always pushed Mossbergs. They're so easy to modify and there's a million different parts for them from buttstocks to pump grips to barrels. Even a novice can swap a field barrel to a home defense barrel in under a minute.
03-05 we had Mossberg 500s and buck shot for breaching because there were no special rounds we were still making it up as we went.
I've owned a 500 since 97 and use it for hunting and training. Such a versatile and dependable shotie.
We used them for bean bag rounds. My battery was deployed as detainee guards.
I've never been in the military but I like them for your stated reasons and for me they even sound better when racking a shell compared to the Remington 870.

Did a lot of breaching with the mossberg, Iraq had mostly steel doors, if you don’t shoot it pretty straight on. Your foot with take the ricochets. The pellets will roll straight down the steel doors and it can be bad. I always stood off to the side and kept it as straight on as possible for internal door locks. You really gotta imagine where the locking mechanism is and aim to hit that. Padlocks overseas are cheap and can be knocked off from any angle. Just my experience with it

My Grandfather, I am 74 years old, was Danish and during WW 1 his job was shooting pigeons that were carrying messages, I inherited the Double Barrel 16 gauge shotgun.
1978 greatest Christmas ever. I was 12 years old and my Dad got me a 12 gauge shotgun, Mossberg 500, with 2 barrels. A birdshot barrel and a smooth bore slug barrel. Many of rabbits, pheasant, grouse and deer have been taken with that gun. Still have it today and will pass it to grandson on his 12th birthday. I did have it rebuilt in 2006. Best gun I have ever owned. 🤘😎

30 years before that I was given a Mossburg 410 bolt with a C- lect choke and it was followed by a few Mossburgs but that little 410 is as sweet as they come.
In the late 80's, an interesting character walked into my fathers electronic manufacturing and design company, with 50 590's. He wanted us to convert the guns so that they'd project a laser when the trigger was pulled for a target game system he was making. We used the barrel as a conductor which sent a signal to the laser diodes which were packed in the front of the barrel (making contact with the barrel) and when you squeezed the trigger the firing pin (which was ground down) made contact with a sensor making contact with the barrel and sending the signal up the barrel to the laser. It was a wild and fun project and totally different than the baseball pitching machine controls that we manufactured. Think Duck Hunt but using actual shotguns. Bally-Midway bought the system from him in Las Vegas. Don't know what became of it but it was called "lightshot." I'll never forget that row of guns in our shop and being able to play with them every day.

@@nomercyinc6783 sure, but you put the game in a bar and you'll get a line out the door, at least during our local beta testing in 6 bars. People absolutely loved pumping real shotguns vs some plastic gun made to look like a toy. They made a lot of money $0.50 at a time. The game itself was a big LED screen (about the size of a traditional stand alone arcade game machine like pac-man) and random circles would be drawn and you had to shoot within them before they disappeared to score. The circles got smaller and disappeared faster as the game progressed. There were 2 shotguns per game so 2 people could compete. It was totally randomly generated so you couldn't get used to a pattern. We used infrared lasers shooting through a lens that put it in more of a wide pattern closer to a shotgun and with ir detectors every 5th pixel behind the led screen.
I have a 590A1. Heat shield, bayonet lug, and magpul pump/stock that i added a sling swivel to the heel of.
Absolutely love the gun. I want an 18" and for about 5 minutes i contemplated trading it, but realized i couldnt bring myself to do it.

I got my 590A1 years ago and I fell in love with it immediately. Admittedly I did have serious feed issued with it at first but after taking it apart and comparing the innards with my 500 I noticed that the shell retaining bar for the tube magazine was bent a little from the factory which caused it to not release a fresh shell most of the time. All I did was bend it back straight and from then on it has run absolutely flawlessly.
I bought mine about 9 years ago and had the same issue, wasn’t sure what it was since I wasn’t practical with shotguns so I sent it in to mossberg and got it fixed. Possibly a bad batch from that time.
It was a bad batch that made it through QA. I had the same thing and got in touch with Mossberg. The rep apologized and told me I could send it in or they could send me a replacement bar. I got the replacement bar.
About a week after getting it the rep sent me an email asking if everything was working ok. I sent them a pic of scraps of paper hanging up at the range with the caption "Works great!".

I had that issue with a 410 Mossberg 500E I bought for my daughter. Called Mossberg, they sent me the new part, solved it in a few minutes. I also have a 870, and it isn't nearly as easy to fix if there is a problem. I appreciate the fact that the Mossbergs are so seviceable by the owner.

I carry a Maverick 88 as my vehicle gun everywhere I go! During my career in the Marine Corps we carried them on Embassy duty and it saved my life. I later carried one on 4 trips to train on the ice cap in Greenland for polar bear defense! I never felt under gunned. They are the multi-tool of the gun world and they have worked for decades!😊

Love this. As a patrol officer, there is a huge mindset nationwide amongst law enforcement that we don't need shotguns anymore because we have patrol rifles. Many agencies have completely gotten rid of their shotguns or converted them to less lethal bean bag guns. I have always maintained the shotgun still has a place in my inventory and that they're not obsolete.

What I was referring to is that I've been able to find quite a few police trade in Remington 870s recently, and a few of them have been in great shape. The best part is the shop had so many of them they were letting them go dirt cheap just to get them out the door. Btw, I've always heard it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're a fool instead of running your mouth and eliminating any doubt. Think about that as long as you need to, boy!

Great video! I LOVE MY 590A1... I trained with one at my PD, and fell in love with it. Immediately bought my own. I almost would take it over an AR in some aspects...... Not all, but definitely some.
Well, I mentioned to my 20 year old son that I wanted an 870 Marine magnum some 15 years ago and he never forgot. He bought me one last Christmas and I took pictures with him, me and the shotgun. It's like the Tomahawk. 100 percent highly affective in every scenario .
When I was in LE I was one of the few officers that still chose the shotgun over the AR. Its extremely versatile and over looked by most folks these days.

I had a 590 in the Navy. When I checked into 3/4 STA PLT in the early 90s, as their Navy Corpsman, I rated a pistol and a shotgun. Very versatile and underused platform.
Carried a mossberg 500 on my first deployment to Iraq. I was a breacher, we had slugs, buckshot, and lockbusters. Hated carrying it, but was cool getting to use it, much like any non normal weapons in the military I guess.

@GraniteStateofMind In other words. Analog let's you feel a vehicle/gun under you. Digital systems/semiautomatic shoguns have less interaction, hence less "feel" to it. I ride a motorcycle with no rider aids, such as abs or traction control. You can't control the bike as well. You can't "feel" the bike as much.

The Marines sure as shit have some serious koolaid. I worked briefly in a recruiting office just after Basic in the Army. The Air Force was too good to share an office with the other branches so they weren't there. Anybody the Army couldn't take we sent across the hall to the Marines, if they couldn't take them they went down the hall to the Navy. The Navy took anybody. ANYBODY. And bizarrely any time a hot girl walked in it was straight to the damn Navy!

Unreal dad advice. I was in an accident on my motorcycle on Friday bc the motorist didn’t see me. I’m lucky to be alive and with minimal injuries…I went to the motorists house yesterday and gave him a big hug. We talked and joked for 20 minutes.
One of my buddies was “doc” in a squad of Rangers.
He often breached and held a pump action shotgun to do so, he told me once after shooting the hinges off a door, and breaching, he found that one of the hinges had went into a T man’s skull. His lead said if he found that hinge in his space he’d be getting a visit from MP, anyway he didn’t take the hinge but cool story.

Thank you. I've been saying this for years, and constantly have people trying to argue with me, that a shotgun can't do anything past around 50yds. Now I can send this to serveral of them.
I love the 1897. I have 6 in 12ga and one in 16ga and I use them for Trap, Skeet, Sporting Clay's, pheasant hunting, and I even qualled with one back when I was LEO that is chopped to 18½" to use off-duty. I also use Ithaca M37's and Mossberg 500 and 590's, but for the past 5+ years I use SxS shotguns, most with 18½" barrels, for most things.
I grew up since elementary school with shotguns and handguns. My father started me shooting skeet and handgun competitions when I was still in elementary school, and I didn't even have a centerfire rifle until my mid-teens. Because of that, I'm still a huge fan of shotguns and debated furiously with my Chief when he wanted to phase them out. Patrol rifles were a huge step forward, but they aren't a replacement for shotguns for some uses.
I'm 68 now and have had my Remington 870 since I was 12 years old, it of course has the dual rail, and a Cap you can unscrew to clean the magazine tube.
The nice thing about the pump / slide action shotgun is that it will perfectly function and to use any type of shotgun cartridge, and it’s always super fun to pump the action.
Why use the pump shotgun? Because it simply works.

In two years as a basic EMT and then 8 years as a paramedic (Advanced EMT) Every (EVERY) person except ONE, that was shot with a shotgun was either dead upon our arrival or expired before reaching the ER. The one patient that survived, was shot with a 20 gauge, loaded with #6 birdshot, distance was across a parking lot (35-40 yards)
Glad to see you covered the Mossberg 5xx series. I've always said that for every Benelli M4 there's 100 Mossbergs 500/590s (or Remington 870s) doing most of the 'legwork'. Whether it be hunting, LEO, Military, they're just cheap, solid quality, and ultra reliable.
The Benelli is sure nice, but its the lambo to Mossbergs/Remingtons Corvette... More parts/accessories, more gunsmiths are gona be able to work on them, more ppl will have used them (and thus its 'universal' and any1 can "pick up and use it" no need to inspect how it works).

I can see the argument, but I've also known ppl who used the living hell out of their 500s (myself incl.) and 870s...and they still run as a "pick it up, no worries. it just works".
for a pump to explode I have to question what the person was doing (3.5" shell in a 3" barrel, the classic "puts muzzle underwater gag" where barrel explodes from pressure) etc. It'd be like saying a break action exploded (and no not one of the black powder 'laminated steel' ones).
They're all great, but I'd take 3-5x of those over the price of 1x benelli all day. no question asked.

Turkey/ham shoots I've attended do it with tannerite card deck size targets at 50 and 100. Very challenging.
I have a 10.5” barrel shockwave that I take out to the range at 100 yards no problem they still put plenty of lead on target well past that

Ran the mossberg 500. Army infantry don’t get too many luxuries, our shotguns don’t even have a rear sight just a bead on the business end. I’ve ran stocked and pistol grip pumps and have breached many doors with it. I’ve conducted IWT and ran breacher courses with it as well as the lead instructor. I trust the mossberg 500 with my life and you should too

I joined the Army in 1979. Pretty much every post had a skeet and trap field. Clinton closed most because we don't want our troops to be interested in shooting. I retired in 1999 and most off duty shooting sports pavilions had been closed. I have been watching the drone war and I can't help but thinking that a nice Ithica 10 gauge would be a real asset. Maybe the Army should reopen the skeet and trap fields.

@@Davie-jx4rh The Army can suck the fun out of anything and shooting is one of the big ones. The military way is always tiresome and boring and miserable. The only time I hated shooting the M2 (50 cal machine gun) was during qualifying. It was the best worst experience you could ever have.

this idea that your shotgun will be useful at all against an fpv is so wacky. there is a huge difference between a generic mavic and your custom built race fpv. and the crazy one is significantly cheaper.

A pump action shotgun with a weapon mounted bayonet is the pinnacle of battlefield lethality.
Bayonetting opponents is quicker than a reload, and if a situation critical - you can throw your shotgun like a spear (i am not serious btw)

Papa Garand running around manhandling my personal favorite shotgun is something I never knew that I needed, but I'm here for it.
I used both the full size and shorty models of the M500 in the Army before they replaced them with the 590A1. Awesome firepower. One thing that I advocated way back then was to use buckshot as an are suppression weapon given that one shot is like a burst of sub-machinegun fire. People laughed at me then and most still do now, but gradually more people are beginning to realize that buckshot at 100 or even 200 yards, puts a lot of lead into a wide space downrange. Even if only one pellets hits an enemy soldier, they're going to be severely wounded or even killed. Fired at a group of soldiers and much like a machine gun, it serves the purpose of keeping the enemy's heads down along with a high probability of hitting some of them. The only downside is that it's very limited on magazine capacity. But during an ambush where you just need to get out of a kill zone quickly while laying down immediate suppressive fire, it can be very effective for disrupting an ambush and buying time to move to cover.
As a civilian while my primary home defense long gun is an AR-15, I still keep a Mossberg Maverick 88 12 gauge pump shotgun topped off with Aguila buckshot minishells (using an OpSol Minishell adapter). It gives me a nice shot spread at 7 yards and doesn't over-penetrate while allowing me for a higher magazine capacity. So every now and then that shotgun does bedside home defense duty still.
Mine doesn't run mini shells, and knew my Mossberg 12g wasn't crap, I didn't know there is a mini shell adapter!?? Please tell me more, I'm still needing the tube extension for 3+ rounds

@@ThePatriotParadox Yeah, the OpSol Minishell adapter works with the Mossberg Maverick 88, the Mossberg 500, and the Mossberg 590. They're inexpensive, easy to install, and work really well to insure that it feeds minishells reliably. Just google OpSol adapter and you'll see the company. They're made in Texas and their website has tons of videos showing how it works.
I always wondered if a Saiga or Gen-12 with drums could stand-in for a support weapon. Preferably with flechettes or #4 buck out of a full choke...

I prefer the 590 (not A1). I’m not on a ship and don’t need a heavy barrel. I also prefer the bead. If I’m using a shotgun, I’m primarily using shot, or I’d be carrying a rifle. The bead is the most effective for moving/fast acquisition point shooting.
The mossberg isn’t as smooth as the 870 but I’d argue more robust and you don’t have the lifter in your way when loading. The 870 is smoother due to when the hammer is cocked. The 870 cocks the hammer halfway through the slide action sequence so there’s already momentum on the slide before hitting resistance. The mossberg starts cocking the hammer at the beginning of the cycle. If I could only have one, I’d take the mossberg, but there’s no comparison on how smooth they are.
That bit about the bead sight being best…you made me want to buy another shotgun. Got a 500 that I put an Eotech on and I have an 870 police magnum with the rifle sights. I think you’re right though, simpler is faster/better.

Always enjoy your videos Mr. Thumb. As a Shotgun guy, I'm always interested. Since I don't ever see myself running through steel bulkheads on a Carrier ever again, I'll stick with my Mossberg 500. I put spitfire FO front and rear sights and they work great. Thanks again!
