I managed to get the kit for $150 with coupons and GP points from gundam planet 2 weeks before christmas. Its definitely the most difficult build ive ever built, for someone who hasnt messed with LED sheets or leds in a model kit it was a nightmare but was well worth it in the end. The engineering for the transformation is genius too.
My older brother who is a gundam guru built the perfect grade unicorn and he struggled his butt off trying to get the wiring in place. Other than that he said it was an awesome build.
I just bought this kit and I am kinda intimidated on the LED part coz everyone tells that it's very fragile. The vid is very thorough and I really appreciate it! subs now :D
Well technically it’s not a standard master grade in Bandai’s grade system.So you should look at it like that. I’d say look at the ones you were concerning before this and pick the one you consider master grade of the year then compare that to this and if that beats this without money as an issue then you’ve got mg of the year but if this somehow beats that then look at money of the two
Awesome review as always. I'm a huge Unicorn fanboy so I'm terribly biased, but even with the price included this thing blew all the other MGs of this year out of the water for me. Other than the shitty foil sticker horn that I had to paint and reuse of the old weapon molds, this kit was pretty much perfection for me. Truly the ultimate Unicorn kit. While the PG is still slightly better looking without the lights, the fact that the LED set for the PG looks like shit compared to the MGEX AND will make the price zoom up an extra $100 on an already ~$180-200 kit, the MGEX has surpassed even the PG. I don't think it's a PG killer, but as someone who enjoys the 1/100 sizing the best, its still superior all things considered. With the fact that armor is undergated, I am already sold for the inevitable Banshee and Phenex releases. I'll be waiting Bandai
well put, I agree with cost of the led kit on the pg kit putting it a rung down, but what put this kit over the top for me was the posability, literally any pose you want.........with a unicorn kit!
@@jabman025 Good point. That's a weakness of the PG Unicorn I don't hear often enough, that being it can't pose really at all. That's what happens when a kit is that large I suppose (hence why I enjoy 1/100 best)
I don’t have the kit but I have the PG version and I’m not quite convinced it trumps it. I just feel like certain features the PG has are more worth it than the superior lightning system this thing has. For starters I like the PG exclusive unchained mode a lot. Plus the PG I think is the only unicorn model kit that has a sliding knee gimmick. Those two things alone make me like the sheer engineering of the PG a lot more. Plus the PG also has pre-painted v-fin parts that even have magnets to keep them closed in unicorn mode. All those little things add up to the PG just feeling a lot more premium overall. Another more subjective point is that I prefer that the PG has an already colored psychoframe. Sure, it means you have to have a completely separate kit for a different color but the MGEX only has two color options anyway plus since both kits run on batteries, the leds are likely to be off 90% of the time so having the psychoframe colored all the time helps with display options. Another thing the pre colored psychoframe allows is that it lets the PG have variants like the banshee, phenex or even the perfectibility. Ever wonder why the MGEX is the only unicorn that isn’t milked to death with tones of variants? It’s because the led and clear psychoframe gimmick basically backed the engenners into a corner because the other variants have the armed armor weapons which all also have psychoframe. And since the MGEX’s shield already has some issues with the light piping when attached to the arm, how the hell are they supposed to pipe all that light onto stuff like the phenex’s wings or the banshee’s collar without heavily modifying the leds? That or just giving up on the gimmick and having a pre colored psychoframe.
How many hours does it take for standard mounting with decals and led? Without adding details and without painting. Thank you so much !!! Amazing work !!!
Unit 1 is done now all bandai need is to milk more money of the unicorn and it won't be a shocker if Ex ver. Ka versions of unit 2 banshee and unit 3 phenex will be announced down the line. Only time will tell.
Those are coming for sure. There's still the Phenex Gundam RC(or the Silver Unicorn) that hasn't had a MG or PG release, so it will probably pop up too.
The only way an add-on pack can kill the FA Unicorn MG kit is if it actually includes everything to match the original, which no FA Unicorn has since the original.
it makes me so sad that this isn't the kit we initially got or at least for the revised ova version back in 2010 of course without the led sheet, and with the normal psychoframe and weapons loadout but the sturdiness, proportions, and detail of it
i feel like this is going to be a common thing to say but like, god i hope they release JUST the Unicorn at some point, without the LED gimmick and with an inner frame - however amazing the LEDs are they add so much to the price when this is legitimately a great Unicorn 2.0
Just buy the MG OVA Unicorn then. The MG have an inner frame to connect everything too. If you buy the standard release where you can't really bend the knee, you can take some clippers and clip away the back part at an angle to allow the knee bend. I figured that out on mine.
As cool as the engineering is in this kit, I don't think I'm hurting for a unicorn kit. I'm fine with just the RG. But the PG Unleashed Gundam is really cool and I'd probably be moure tempted to drop the money for that
Anything Bandai does with LEDs seems excessively expensive. Something like 4 LEDs built in will be like 30 dollars more. You can get a lot of little LEDs for 10-20 dollars. I wonder if they just cost more in Japan for some reason, or if they really inflate the price for the LED based sets, or if the light variation gimmicks many kits use are driving up the price a lot relative to a more basic set up.
I am a beginner builder and when I saw this kit I instantly fell in love with it. The only thing that is keeping me away from this kit is the leds. I am scared of messing it up. Should a beginner like me build this kit?
Hell I’ve got a crap ton of hgs, 20 some MGs, and a pg under my belt and the LEDs scare me away from this kit. Me and wire LEDs have an... ummm history
I.... disagree that this kit killed the perfect grade. It 100% killed the other MG unicorns (if you're willing to pay the money for this one, that is), but the perfect grade??? The perfect grade may have a lackluster lighting system in comparison, but to be honest the lighting for it was not the draw for me (heck, I don't even HAVE the LEDs for the PG, though I do have the FA expansion). For me it was the size, the extra transformation, and also that the Unicorn is my favorite MS. I see why you'd say that this kit kills it, but I can't really say that I agree.
Jabman, thank you for making this review. I only have the RG and I agree that this is hands down the best representation of the Gundam Unicorn in kit form. I cannot blame Bandai for the price as the engineering involved and the thought process on this kit is next level. Which kit do you think would get a MGEx next? I have a strong feeling that it's going to be the Gundam Exia.
Doing 2020 MG kit of the year seems kinda pointless while there's only 4 regular release? And I rather buy the MG Testament which is much more interesting than another Unicorn. Heck you can buy the PGU RX-78-2 at the same price.

I haven’t seen people talk about how you’re getting two kits in one. You’re getting the normal red destroy mode color and you’re getting the final battle version. Like for example if you want a perfect grade you’re going to be spending around $550 or more for it. That doesn’t feel worth spending at all. So I think for $250 I think it’s worth the money.

Got myself the RG FA Unicorn and the MG FAZZ Ver Ka and I think the money was better spent. Not saying this kit isn't straight up awesome, it is. Just need more than what this offers at that price point.
I would rather get a Metal Build Figures than this pile of plastics, at least Metal Build Figures got reselling value, the price is not worth it in every aspect as model kits especially in that size IMO.

for whatever it's worth, the PG's magnet antenna gimmick never worked for me, it stayed just as split as any other, and the color swapping (and intensity) of the MGEX's lights far surpass the PG's too. Only thing the PG has on it is the pre-painted horn...

Its meant for those who want a big scale Unicorn with a detail mechanical inner frame that can also light up with a sold separately LED system, it also comes with a pre-painted inner-frame so its still looking good even with the LEDs turned off unlike the MGEX that would be blending in with the wall behind it if the LED are off (which they are going to be most of the time unless you wanna keep killing the batteries). This is also small but the details on the PG's are still slightly better than that of the MGEX's and it even has a more accurate head design. (MGEX's head looks a bit weird in DM). Lastly sure the LEDs on the MGEX are superior to the PG's but the PG Unicorn's LED system still gets the job done. So yeah the PG Unicorn still has a place.
Nothing about the PG outside of personal aesthetic preferences (size and proportions) is better than the MGEX. The MGEX is better engineered, more posable, better LEDs, and has more accessories out of the box than the PG. if you air brush or even have a gundam marker that foil stickers on the horn are dealt with in less than 2 minutes, so that barely a substantial con. If you like the size of the PG more, that’s absolutely valid. But the MGEX does everything outside of being big better than the PG does at a cheaper price point than it would take to get the PG to have everything the MGEX has.

Just finished this kit. It is such a good kit, the head transformation is so difficult, and scratch up the paint since I painted the whole thing.

I don't agree at all that this kills the PG Unicorn. If i'm gonna pay PG prices for a kit, I want something that's PG-sized.
Can't wait for the Plan B (Perfectbility) variant that undoubtedly release few years down the road.

yeah a 1/100 colony laser would need a 1/100 colony and that would be 64 meters in diameter so a reasonably tall building in diameter

not a beginner kit, but if you take it slow I can see someone with just a little practice doing it...........just take it SLOW
The led sheet is tough. Don't be afraid to build it. I'm quite a butterfinger but i managed to build mine.
For a beginner, start with the HG line first. Do several of those, and then a few MG kits before getting into a kit like this one and a PG.

It's 299.00 but a better investment and bigger bang for the buck, I bought two of them and I be painting one as the real type custom.
About how many hours would you say the main body took to build?
It's been a while since I built it but I guess 6-7 hours..... Again that's just for the Gundam not anything else

The LEDs are a little complicated because they're just so different than most gunpla, take it slow and you should be fine

Lastly sure the LEDs on the MGEX are superior to the PG's but the PG Unicorn's LED system still gets the job done. So yeah the PG Unicorn still has a place.
Nothing about the PG outside of personal aesthetic preferences (size and proportions) is better than the MGEX. The MGEX is better engineered, more posable, better LEDs, and has more accessories out of the box than the PG. if you air brush or even have a gundam marker that foil stickers on the horn are dealt with in less than 2 minutes, so that barely a substantial con. If you like the size of the PG more, that’s absolutely valid. But the MGEX does everything outside of being big better than the PG does at a cheaper price point than it would take to get the PG to have everything the MGEX has.
Proportions are something subjective

I'm more surprised that Bandai didn't release a version of this without the LEDs, and instead just give the option for colorless clear, clear pink, and clear green psychoframe parts. That way it would encourage people to buy multiples and not worry about paying the $200+.
Regardless, I think we can expect a 'Full Armor' add on set as a full kit version would probably make it ridiculously expensive.

- RX-0[N] Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee Norn
- RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 03 Phenex (Narrative Ver.)

In terms of 2020 MGs, I'd go with the MG GN-003 Gundam Kyrios and MG XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero EW "Ver.Ka" instead.

The entire gimmick was the med so selling it separately will ruin part of the unicorn.
Good point! I already bought the MG Cage Unicorn kit. It would be nice if they sold the MG figure with the shield and weapons separately from the cage.
