So much wrong with this video. First the guy in video obviously don't know much on the subject and only learned when he got his card stolen, in essence he a script kiddy. Doesn't show how to even protect your own cards and self from attacks. He uses the largest CC reader/writer in history when they are pocket sized now. The. He uses a method that makes you have to have the card and laptop (as in inside job at the restaurant t) instead of how criminals really do it (wirelessly, from many feet away) but again the guy in the video a script kiddy and don't know anything on the topic, just hurt because they got him so he went in forums and they told him buy a reader lol. So sad. Find a better teacher if you want education and real knowledge . But I'm not giving you script kiddy criminals gas. Go read the documentation

Hey David I really enjoy your videos and I think you're doing a great service by shedding light on things like this.
I think it's very risky to blur a credit card on screen as deblurring algorithms are already out there and getting better.
Also a tape over embossed numbers still show information, I think it's best to either have a stock example card / an expired non valid one, on this videos to keep yourself safe from these kind of attacks.

@@williammack791 Most cards still have a magnetic strip for places that do not have chip readers at least in the US. Cards whose chip does not read a few times in a row will default to use the strip. Also, online retailers can’t use a chip. You’d be surprised the info contained on the magnetic strip.

I'm amazingly pleased to note that the three cards I've received in recent weeks do not have a mag stripe, and two of them do not have the 16-digit card number on the front. Sadly one of those two has it printed on the back - but well done Chase UK for realising you don't need it to be there at ALL so long as you can access it via other methods.

@@elcoa593 No, you don't need the number to be printed on it to use it on an NFC reader or in a chip'n'pin reader. And that covers 100% of cardholder-present uses these days. No-one still uses carbon imprint vouchers.

what I'm thinking is you can do this to your own cards and make them blank cards. By just stripping the magstripe data off of it and saving it to a file that way you don't have to worry about someone swiping your card. Since most places use the chip instead of the swipe. But leave one card with the magstripe data on it just in case you need to use one for swiping rather than tap to pay or chip
its very suspicious to use cloned credit cards, even if it is your own. you could get arrested.
I'm a U.S. citizen, now living in Central and South America. I have a security system when using my U.S. based credit cards. I can block/freeze each of my individual credit cards. When I want to use them, I unblock/unfreeze them. After use, I block/freeze again! This works perfectly, as long as you have some type of internet available, which I use with a VPN.
They can still go to an atm and take the money off

You don't actually need access to someone's physical card to do this. You can find "dumps" online. A "dump" is the information stored on the magnetic strip of the card, or in other words, what comes up on that software when you read a card. You can find the dump and paste it into the software and it'll work the same as if you had the card physically.

Thank you. Like I said in the video, don't give people your card where you cannot see what they are doing. For some of these attacks it will take an entire separate video to show how to protect / prevent.
@@davidbombal Agreed but the simplicity with which the data can be stolen is alarming. Even if ppl are with a shop staff while he's swiping the card, he could easily steal the data. Once it so happened the actual machine wasn't working so they had to get another one. It could be used as a perfect excuse by the thief. I guess one could just be vigilant at the most😅

You can easily erase the the magnetic tape, you can also drill a hole or cut away the RF id coil/antenna. it is harder to cut the card number away from the card. By doing so you make life harder for copy cats, only the encrypted chip is left to communicate...
Great video, hopefully no one is using magnetic strip card today. If you do so, try to damage the stip using magnet.
RFID(ISO 14443) is a bit advanced but that option is good to be disabled as well,. Only chip authentication (ISO 7816) is safer a bit.

Very informative video David! I have a question though. I am in the habit of locking my debit card between ATM withdrawals. In the event my card were somehow cloned, would the cloned card be able to be used either at a POS, or ATM withdrawal while the actual card was locked? I assume the cloned card would not work while the lock was in effect, but would like your thoughts. Thanks!
Same thing happened to me, my debit card was cloned and I was taught locking my debit card between ATM withdrawals gonna solve then I keep on receiving some debit alert which some scammers who cloned my card were stealing from my bank until a friend of mine directed me to hackerensured on Instagram who I paid $100 within five minutes my debit card was reversed
No. The transaction would be denied. I do the same thing , I lock my card in between uses because sometimes I have auto pay set up and I don’t want it t come out of my account when I don’t have the funds to cover it . Or subscriptions I’ve cancelled that still try to charge my card.

I asked my card companies to send me a card without the magnetic strip, only the chip and NFC. There is no option so I simply save the card info with encryption and remove it from the card physically. I’m next going to remove the mag strip as well. It’s a lot of work and you have to be careful not to damage the chip antenna.
I use revolut and app makes it possible to disable usage of magnetic strip so payments won't go through

Old news this device 20 years ago was called a MSR 206 it used a com port and a TA32 for collecting tracks.

He is correct, you should be careful with your bank cards, but I don't believe chip & pin cards can be cloned as they work on challenge response 2 way communication.

Theres so much more to it, cards have codes on them that indicate if a CHIP is required, and you cant clone a chip. This would only work on super old cards. Also, reading chips, yes it works, but does not disclose enough information to do anything. So yeah, they are pretty secure.

With regard to the cloned credit card, a good way to protect yourself from say a restaurant waiter cloning your card behind your back would be to deliberately destroy the magnetic strip on your good card, relying only on the embedded chip to make transactions. I don’t believe that they are able to clone the chips yet.

1) always block your ccv with a permant writer and remember it
2) magnetic strips are useless nowadays if you setup your CC correctly
3) the chip uses ECC, cant clone that.
4) you are covered by insurance for CC fraud with a proper CC provider/
skimming magnet stripped CC is obsolete nowadays for EU supplied cards, also 2FA is more common practice nowadays for online purchase and that is more to protect the issuer of the CC

It is very essential that everyone stays aware, but should not be afraid of using a payment card.
The vulnerability shown in the video is a threat for cards with only magnetic stripes. Nowadays most payment card had EMV chips, they are lot more secure . But always awareness is key.

These are all decades old styles of cloning and very inconvenient. There are many other easier and much more sophisticated ways of cloning cards in 2021 !!!

I was a victim of someone using a contactless skimmer. Of course, it was a relative who did it. David, do you know of any products that are truly able to block contactless skimmers? I know there are tons of products (wallets and wallet inserts) that say they do, but are any of them reliable? Thank you!

@Roman K, I would have agreed before, but not now. This was at a tour walking through a local botanical garden and where I never set my wallet down, but she did walk near me frequently as we moved along. I never would have realized it was her, except the credit card company called all that evening informing me of all the locations the person was trying to spend on my card. Fortunately, they locked my card after the first unusual purchase which amounted to about $25, but throughout the rest of that night, she attempted to spend approximately $2000 online. The list of stores turned out to be all her favorites that she talked about all the time. We confronted her and found out that she did use her phone and a contactless device. She claims she doesn't do it anymore, but I will never trust her again. I only take cash in my pocket if I know we're going to be at the same event or gathering.
You could ditch cards and pay by a phone or by a watch, unlike the credit card, it is active only for a short period of time, when you activate it.
