It is not that difficult to have a separate phone number for banks/finance that you keep private and dont share with anybody. The lack of basic cybersecurity knowledge in the public baffles me. Take all measures you can to keep your phone number private, may this case be a lesson for everyone.
Some people don't have the time to learn this kind of stuff bro, and this applies to everyone, not everyone knows how to change a tire, not everyone knows how to change a broken water pipe, not everyone knows how to farm, I could go like this all day... But I believe the main reason for this is that not everyone got enough money to afford a second phone...
@@TheDankShrimp We are talking about a man that runs a tech company with $5 million in a single crypto wallet and the rest of his wallets weren't even hit. He can easily afford a second phone. It is people like him I'm talking about. Also, honestly if someone can't afford 2 phones, no scammer is going to waste his time on them so they can rest easy. A cheap second hand phone which costs less than $50 and the most basic phone plan available should be a worthwhile investment if you have over $100,000 in savings like the guys in the video.
SIM swapping is a social engineering exploit. The weakness is the people, so using a separate phone has the same weakness as there is a human (an employee at company X) who you can convince to give you the phone number, and now you have the exact same problem as in the video. You should be advocating for physical key (ie YubiKey) as a 2FA (instead of a phone) with no way to recover if you don’t have the physical key. You should advocate for a bank or services in general that support physical keys. Bank of America, Google, vanguard, iCloud all support physical keys, but most people don’t know this. This is way more secure than a separate phone. It’s normal and expected for the average person to not know this, since you yourself didn’t know enough about security enough to know having a separate phone is just a band aid over the problem.

I’m sure if everyone could afford a second phone they would. Remember, a lot of Americans live paycheck to paycheck
@@sweet3488 I dont think the average American living paycheck to paycheck has $5 million in crypto hanging around.

*Seeing that public defender say…the judge fucked us…it makes you really hate lawyers. Joel participated in a $7.5 mill heist and got a 10 year prison sentence (will likely get out a year early on good behavior so 9 years). Most people would serve a 10 year prison sentence if it meant they’d be $7.5 mill richer afterwards. That’s basically making $800K/year to spend in a prison which beats any working 9 to 5 job. The sheer amount Joel stole, I’d say he’s lucky to be in a country like USA that gives light sentence for white collar crime and theft. Vietnam will issue the death penalty for that kind of theft. Joel did not get fucked, his victims got fucked. His lawyer doesn’t have a clue.*

Lots of people named Joel pronounce it Joe-El, which is historically how it has been pronounced. Shortening it to one syllable is has become more popular (and is probably more common than Joe-El nowadays), but it’s certainly not universal.

To protect yourself from SIM swapping attacks, use multi-factor authentication with a FIPS-compliant hardware security key, which is immune to SMS hijacking and provides security for your accounts and cryptocurrencies.
Using any hardware security key for multi-factor authentication can help protect against SIM swapping attacks. FIPS-certified keys are recommended because they meet stringent security standards, offering an additional layer of assurance and reliability.

- keep your sim secured via a PIN code, most carriers allow you to set that
