ATM is written in ALL CAPS

@@SmokinQuixote there are so many better options for getting cash I just don’t understand the appeal of using an unsecured ATM that’s often outdoors. There’s so much that can go wrong. Not just this trick, but skimmers, people attacking you either before the transaction (and forcing you to withdraw money) or after (conk you over the head and take your money) or distract you from the task, it’s just like why? Go get cash when you buy groceries at the supermarket. Go to your bank during banking hours and withdraw cash.

It is a terrible design. This issue could be avoided with properly designed software.
Closing the session should not be required for security. All that is needed is if you select YES for an additional service it requires you to re-tap your card to proceed.

    • @TheresaReichley
      @TheresaReichley 2 місяці тому

@@neilpickup237 even if you can fix this issue in particular, ATMs in general are a bad idea that really need to go away. As I said most are in very unsecured environments where you’re often isolated and where the device itself is easy to access without anyone noticing. There’s one outside a gas station near me. All you’d need to do is put on a bright yellow vest that you can buy at Walmart and you could spend an hour doing anything you wanted to that thing and nobody working there would see it. It’s just not worth messing with it.

Always pull on the card readers as well. They're attached with 2 sided tape. They install those bogus readers within minutes and right in front of the public. I tug on EVERY card reader I use. If you use your debit card use it as a credit card transaction, no pin. Not full proof but, it's something. I like the fact that in Europe, they don't take your card away from your sight. They scan at the table. I constantly check my credit card when in use. Particularly when traveling internationally. Turn on the instant purchase notifications. I wouldn't mind it if it turned out to be my error, but this was absurd. I phased out that checking account and moved to another bank and have been pleased ever since. 1. Always check your surroundings in a bank and by the ATM.2. When you finish your transaction, cancel and close out all of your activity while you are at the ATM. 3. Lock your debit card in your bank app. Before you leave the branch, check your bank account ..This will protect you and your money.

Here's some more tips - 1. Have two checking accounts (a "secret" acct and a "withdrawal" acct), but don't link them with the ATM card. Tell the bank you don't want them linked from the ATM card. On your mobile app transfer funds from the secret account to your withdrawal account as needed. 2. Don't write checks or do ATM transactions from your secret account, only from the withdrawal acct. 3. Don't have overdraft on either account. This way your money is protected as much as possible.

During Covid I used my mastercard credit card to buy gas for my vehicle at a random gas station, not knowing that scammers had placed a card reader on the pump.
About 1 or 2 days later I received an alert from the credit card company that somebody had charged about $1,300 on my credit card at a walmart.
I immediately called the credit card company and told them not to pay out those charges, which I did not authorize and they did not pay out those unauthorized walmart charges.
Just around that time the local police department put out an alert about credit card scammers placing card readers on gas pumps.
That's why I NEVER use my debit card to buy gas at any gas pump.

Well, fast forward to a few years later when we were getting married, she said we should stop using cc. So i obliged at a gas station. Filled up the truck and a few hrs later there was attempted fraud! Never used my debit again and convinced her that my way was better 🤣

Yep, credit cards are WAY better in pretty much every way. Way more protections, you usually get points for cas back, customer service is almost always better, you can be collecting interest on the money during the credit card grace period. The only advantage I see for debit cards is you can’t go crazy with your spending. But then you could just set a really low limit on your credit card also so even that is not an advantage.

They looked out and authorized a higher dollar amount than I was getting (driving Gramma's Cadillac) and it put $100 on hold for 24 hours or something like that. Showed the right amount on my receipt but I had less available balance to spend. I learned that day to always go inside and tell them how much I want to put in on pump ___ and I pay inside. I never pay at the pump.

Our bank even called us one time to check and see if we did indeed buy an airline ticket to Malaysia, an $800 men’s suit and a $300 pair of men’s shoes. I told the bank (at the time) that I didn’t even have a passport why would I buy a ticket to Malaysia? I was not held liable for the transactions. We had used that card the same month of those transactions at a hotel in Charlotte, NC and had to have a card “registered” to cover “incidentals”. I’m pretty sure that is where it happened from.

Bank transactions are a private and personal matter. You should not allow anyone else to be present or within your immediate surroundings to have conversation with you during the time of the transaction. Anytime someone interacts with you while you are engaging in a transaction they should be treated with high caution and you should likely cease with the interaction AND the transaction. Also, complete every transaction to be ready for the next person. Always request paper and digital receipts of your transaction and/or purchase.

Never use debit cards outside of the inside of your bank when it’s open, i.e., when you’re at a teller station and using it for authentication. Also, if there is *anything* wrong with an ATM. such as the card insert slot not working - DON’T USE THE ATM AND CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD IMMEDIATELY TO REPORT IT! Same thing for a payment terminal in a store. If there are stickers covering anything up; if there is a plastic overlay on the keypad - anything like that. Don’t use the terminal and call the number on the back of the card, as adding stickers or putting overlays invalidates the PCI PTS approval of the terminal - because they are often done to hide modifications, like skimmers.

If your bank wont provide a standard card without the chip feature, you're doing business with the wrong bank. When using your card, cover the numbers. Try to do business where you swipe the card, not the retailer. They can be thieves as well. I scratch the CVS/CVV number on the back of the card out so that no one can use it online but me. Make sure the machine says welcome after you are done so that you know that it is reset. Look for cameras, extra devices attached to or sitting next to the ATM, and prying eyes. Always get a good look at your surroundings.
