    Will Sampson, "10 Bears", had a tough and short life (died at age 53 after a heart and lung transplant, and a long struggle with a disease that ate away at his body). It was good to see him here. Of course, so many of us know him as "Chief" (who was partial to Juicy Fruit gum) from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Imagine playing a role where you barely say a word, and yet his part at the end of Cuckoo's Nest just breaks your heart and burns itself into your memory. Will Sampson also was a painter, and he had a great deal to do with Hollywood finally hiring Native American actors to play Native Americans (instead of Greeks, Italians and white folks wearing makeup) -- he founded the American Indian Registry for the Performing Arts.

    • @ginfrench3350

      Thanks for your comment. Sonny sure was a talented artist...he won many awards for his artwork, did artwork for the magazine "Arizona Highways, and to this day has many paintings hanging in prominent museums, like The Smithsonian. Also, thanks for mentioning all the Native advocacy info on Sonny as well. When he was on the set of The White Buffalo, he held up production for 24 hours by refusing to say his lines until the white actors playing Native roles were replaced by Native actors. And the Native American Registry For The Performing Arts is still operating today. A woman who worked there commented on the memorial video I made to honor Sonny assuring me that Sonny's legacy is still going strong. Keep spreading the good things that Sonny did in his way too short, amazing, beautiful life!!! Yaa'te'eh, my friend.

      Our so-called "Government" tears into each other, like a pack of hungry, mean, and very vicious wolves, going at each other like there's no tomorrow...
      Or...so it seems.
      However, when you look at the different Orders that they belong to, or at least some of them, whether they be Freemasons, or whatever, then it should give you a sick feeling inside that, no matter what they tell "The American Public", in secret, they're working together to destroy "The American Public", through "Fair speeches and words and phrases", designed to throw The American Public off guard, and they pretend to be on our side... while, privately, they work to destroy us from within, and to lead us into their Satanic New World Order! If we stand idly by, and let that happen to us, then we may bid a fond adieu to our freedoms.
      I would personally rather live with People like Ten Bears. Him, and People like him, are willing to live honestly.
      Everybody needs that!

    This is one of the best, if not THE best scene of poetic "plain-speak" I have ever heard. Josey lays it out, and gets to the point, but does it in a way that allows him to show Ten-Bears that they are both alike. As both two people who are just trying to get by, and also as warriors who aren't afraid of anything, and aren't afraid to die. Whoever wrote the words of this scene, deserved an award for writing such compelling dialogue. Dialogue that not only defines the situation, but also quickly and accurately describes these 2 men, and as to who they really are.

    It's the heart of "The Outlaw Josey Wales" that separates it from other westerns. "Unforgiven" is a great movie, with a great theme of reputation versus reality, but it takes so long to get to the final crescendo. "Josey Wales" is far deeper. It makes a hero, not only out of an outlaw, but out of a confederate soldier who fought in the war out of personal tragedy, not politics. It showed that even history's heroes had blood on their hands, and a dark side. A true argument could be made that this is Clint Eastwood's masterpiece.

      I don't know , both have their moments . Ten Bears was the moment in this one , but I'm kinda partial to the old chief saying , " Get ready , Granny , Hell's coming to breakfast . " myself . I tend to feel that Clint Eastwood was more respectful towards the Indigenous people , than was portrayed in most "westerns" . Just my humble opinion . I'm a fan of all of his films . But hollywood ain't reality . It's just a movie . I think the Indigenous people were wiser than we were told .

    • @Abettorman
      @Abettorman 2 роки тому +10

      I would agree. He begins as a peaceful, pioneer farmer whose family is burned alive by a marauding fringe of Union Cavalry duringthe Civil War. His original goal was retribution. After peace broke out and his unit was slaughtered, his goal became freedom. When he finds a new family, he discovers that what he really wanted was to become a peaceful, pioneer farmer.
      Excellent plot lines around some real events and factions, lending not only credibility, but also a morality to the situation. The flight south as real as any Western chase ever told. A man at least as deadly as William Munny, but with righteous anger. A man who was willing to pay for a slave he just met only to free her. He is a good man who was pushed over the line but fought his way back from the brink of destruction.

    • @NormAppleton

      You're wrong. WRONG WRONG WRONG
      Josey Wales is a great movie but Clint's bullshit libertarianism is farcical. As great as this scene is, it basically is two men without a care about broader society.
      Now Unforgiven is an existential masterpiece. It isn't about politics, it's about what little time we have and how transient life is.

      The actor who played Ten Bears was Will Sampson, who was the iconic Chief Bromdon in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. I knew Will and sadly he passed away from complications following a heart/lung transplant in 1987. Will, Sonny as I called him was in many major films--google Will Sampson movies. He also had a recurring part on Vegas. More importantly he was an award winning artist his entire life and many of his amazing paintings are in countless museums including the Smithsonian Museum of Art. Google Will Sampson paintings to see some of his art work. He was a multi-talented man!
