The Trees because of the change in time signatures. 5/4 time almost unheard of in rock. "Something for Nothing" . M y favorite from 2112. Also request "Cinderella Man". Very underrated tune. Thanks Guys, Son of Cygnus
Always enjoy your videos. I look forward to every one of them. “I will choose a path that’s clear, I will choose Freewill.” Love that line. I also love, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.”
As someone who's heard Freewill over 100 times, I'm starting to think the instrumental passage is TOO good... so good that people can't grasp how good it is. Each instrument by itself is already an overload. So it takes many listens to fully appreciate it all. I still get psyched by it.
@@shack8110 , I hear ya!!!! musical segues to connect different parts of music within their songs.....out of verses into solos, out of solos into verses, verses into choruses, etc. brilliant writing!
Watch them play that live. It's not only a great song, but the fact that it's a trio playing it without backup is Rush's declaration that "here's what we can do. You?"
Getty Lee vocals are mesmerizing and to realize only 3 guys make that music it's breathtaking. Proud to be Canadian and to have been listening to Rush since their beginning.
RUSH is musical AND lyrical PERFECTION! How in the hell can only 3 musicians sound this phenomenal?! Thanks for this reaction! Perhaps, 'Natural Science' next?
I've seen Rush live 14 times.....EVERY single time, when the show was over, my face hurt from smiling so much! My wife didn't know of them or like them when I took her to her first show, and she loved it, said it was the best concert she'd ever seen.
If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice. My favourite Rush lyric. I saw them once with The Tragically Hip. Have you heard of this legendary Canadian band...if you choose not to answer you still have made a choice.
I can see Alex just going nuts every time Geddy does one of those insanely fast bass bits during the mid-breakdown. Same as what happened on Subdivisions. As a bass player myself, that's the kinda thing that gets me pumped too.
There are "lessons" in the "listens". Alex said "... after 100 lessons" and then corrected himself. The lyrics mean way more to me as an old guy with old guy knowledge. Thank you for your channel!
This is one of those songs that will grow on you.... as catchy and as popular as it is. Listening to it with the volume turned up i still find my self engrossed with it. Particulary the middle part with the instrumental and geddy's bass in the background driving away and Alex leading the charge with that solo. Then coming out of it is pure bliss going into the line 'Each of Us, A Cell of Awareness'.
Neil Peart is not only the best drummer in the world, he is extremely smart, deep and a very talented lyricist. Very poetic indeed and wrote all of Rush's symbolic lyrics.
Hey, huge thanks for reviewing this song! It's somehow appropriate that you posted this video on May 17, which happened to be my 53rd birthday. Why? Because this was the very first Rush song I ever heard. A friend turned me on to it back in 1980, when I was 14 years old. This song turned me into a Rush fan for life. And, perhaps more importantly, it's the song that made me decide to become a bass player. At that time, I was just beginning to learn to play guitar, and I don't think I was even really aware of the "bass guitar" as a distinct instrument. But I heard Geddy's bass during the instrumental section, and OMG, that was absolutely *the coolest thing I had ever heard in my life*. I fell in love with Rush and the bass guitar right then and there, and I've been a Rush fan and bass player for nearly 40 years now. But, dammit, I still can't play this song correctly. Almost, but not quite. That line, "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice" - it was apparently a popular line tossed around the "hippie" community back during the time these guys were in high school (according to my stepfather, who was an actual hippie back then).
Nice - yeah, the more I listen to the solo break, after 40 years, I'm still hearing new things. IMHO, that 30 secs is one of the best examples of the Hard Rock genre in human existence. All 3 guys are just absolutely killing it. Alex's solo is out-of-this-world marvelous, Geddy's shredding the bass and Neil is being Neil - incredible fusion of 3 musical talents. During the live shows, this was the "we're not worthy" moment of the show with arms raised bowing.
could not agree with you guys more!!!!!! that instrumental section seen live is absolutely unbelievable to witness!!!!! As it progresses, you're smacked up-side the head with a, OH MY GOD!!!!!!........what the hell am I seeing and hearing?!?!?!?!.....surreal!!!!!!!!
The guitar work on this tune during the pre-chorus (when Geddy is singing "A planet of play things...") gives me goosebumps almost every time I hear it.
And awesome enough very few people can believe that the drummer wrote the lyrics and got his ideas from many philosophers it’s just an amazing thing great video I’m glad y’all enjoyed it
I hope everyone was using a good pair of head phones while listening to this! The way the sounds travels in and around inside your head is just spectacular! Wow!!!!! Thank you, Andy & Alex!!!! You guys are THE BEST!
The boys and I used to have a pretty impressive Rush air band back in the day. Fueled by a few beers we would play late into the night. Great memories.
You’ll notice that ALL truly great bands whose music still lasts (Led Zep, etc) are comprised of members who individually possess extreme brilliance. No better example of this than Rush, where (aside from their unparalleled creative abilities) each member’s personal humility and good nature allowed them to work together and create masterpiece after masterpiece, decade upon decade. This band is a gift to humanity, both for their incredible music and lyrics, and for the inspirational way that they carried themselves in the glare of the spotlight for so long. I consider myself lucky to have been a fan since 1978. Their songs have enhanced my life! Great video, guys. Keep up the good work!
I would highly recommend watching the Rush documentary ‘Beyond the Lighted Stage’. Provides a lot of insight into the lyricism and how that and the musicianship transitioned over the years. Just as a watch, not necessarily a reaction, lol. Great reaction y’all!
Great movie!!!!!....btw, just saw Cinema Strangiato a month back in the theatre..........WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great sound and footage!!!!!!!!!! So easy to see how amazing and what a special band they were!!!!!!!!!!....truly one of a kind!
One of the many things I love about this song is that unless you're paying attention, you don't notice that the time signature changes almost every measure. It's bizarre that something so unnatural can be so natural. Same with Jacob's Ladder.
Just a peak inside the mind of Neil Peart...one of the most well read musicians around, his personal novels/writing is just as intense when speaking about his love of motorbikes or the polyrhythms found in his music. A lyric master.

Rush is very much a band you listen to multiple times and need to zone out of the other two instruments and focus on one. It never seems to get old. Once you isolate each instrument (in your mind ) you almost unlock the ability to hear everything at once. There is just SO MUCH going on.
Ah, memories! Permanent Waves cranked on the stereo in my '77 Cutlass with the windows down as I drove fast down empty country roads in northern Michigan during summers in the 80's... When did I get so old?

The fact that all of them solo at once fits with the idea of free will because they're all choosing what to do! It's so cool! I personally don't believe in free will but this is still an awesome song. And I'm sad Red Barchetta lost cuz it's my favourite song but this one is great too.
Great song! Another great Canadian power trio to check out is Triumph. Listen to Hold On, Never Surrender, Fight The Good Fight, Magic Power, Lay It on The Line...all great Triumph songs...

This album was kinda of a change up from their previous albums, one that I really enjoyed. Glad you are still discovering RUSH. 00:00 Finding My Way from their debut album is a must for true RUSH fans.
I own "Rush" on vinyl. It's a collector's item. And that's all it will ever be - a collector's item. I hate that freakin' album... it's also missing 33% of the band. A must for "true fans" would be "Hold Your Fire". If you own that one, it means you really are a true Rush fan! ;)
@@surfeit5910 Working Man is the song that gave rush their breakthrough recognition. This album demonstrated their basic rock n roll abilities which granted them the opportunities to unleash their own style of music that we all grew to know and love as RUSH. Take A Friend 😆

@@mustangdebbie56 Working Man is a mediocre song, at best. That first album is good, but was very raw and 'Zeppelin like'. Rush really shined as a prog rock band when the SECOND album, 'Fly By Night' (and all their follow up albums to that one) came out!
@@AudiophileTubes I agree Working Man is raw and unsophisticated for Rush, but the live version done on their time machine tour 2011 is the best version, with the new intro, Alex going crazy, and of course, Neil elevating the whole song. ua-cam.com/video/sI5VuBzo-Qc/v-deo.html
From my limited knowledge of Rush, this is my favorite. I love the lyrics and especially Geddy's delivery. The instrumentals often remind me of jazz - it's like listening to each instrument playing their own song and yet they're cohesive. I give it a nine. Anytime you wanna waste a few hours talking about free will, let me know. I'll need a bottle of Crown Royal for fortification though. 🤓 🥃
You guys should review one of the live versions. A staple of their live shows for decades, and the crowd goes hog wild every time. Really electric live.
Even radio friendly Rush is phenomonal! Free Will, among Neil's other religious/philosophical lyrics, is why I listen to Rush. That being said, listen to Fountain of Lamneth. 20 minute song like 2112 but came out a year before. Rock on guys!

I love to see a new generation realizing "mom music"yes young gentlemen, your mom and dad were way cooler than you can fathom.
Love watching you guys react, accept, and contemplate music that formed my personality and world view as a teenager.
The more you listen to this one...the more it will creep up your listening list. Great song....with a great reaction. Keep it going guys...good stuff. Maybe Working Man as your next kick a Rush tune.
No No NO! 'Working Man' is OK, but not nearly as epic and mind blowing musically as Rush's later stuff.... AFTER that first album!
The live version of Working Man in Cleveland is the best.
The greatest lyricist in music history. Period.
Have to have to have to do Natural Science. Best epic Rush song ever.
Live version from rush in Rio for natural science. Best ever
You will love Great King Rat for its rusty wild guitars and drum gallopade:) by Queen of course
1000000% banger oh my gOSH
I literally get emotional when I listen to Rush. All three members are standup Human beings, and on a world stage of their own.
I'm 56 years old, listened to this song thousands of times, and I think I finally, truly, understand it after listening to it this time.
Just joined. Thanks lads. Love your reactions to Rush. Thx from Scotland 😀🏴😀
I think this is Alex's best solo. So many individual points, and yet so many layers, to the solo.
Rush touched my soul! Love this band.
You guys remind me of Wayne and Garth from Wayne's world. Don't take that wrong it's a compliment. You do a good job you listen and comment later I like that keep up the good work
You guys need to delve into more 'Yes'!! Please do 'Heart of the Sunrise'!!
