Knopfler always paints a picture, tells a story, so clearly you can just see her, weaving in, out. Hallelujah, here she comes. Mmmm. Wish we could put Mark Knopfler in a time warp, so he never gets older.
Still, listening to this reminds me of this time, his voice, the phrasing, and what a band this was. Today he is very different as we all change so must he. I liked him then and I like him now, his storytelling is excellent and what voice he has, like others before him have - done the best he possibly could with it. I buy few cds in recent years but I bought Tracker. I adore Mark Knopfler.
This song was like an anthem when I was young; the girls I was hanging out with were all roller bladers and so when we heard this ditty we adopted it. Dire Straits were always underrated as far as I was concerned; One of the top 5 best bands of its era.
Most of all song's parts are perfect. Vocal line is so spontaneous, solos between the vocals are perfect, Alan Clark piano phrases are worderful, breaks and rhythm arranged for this song by Pick Withers are fantastic. This song brings me remember when I hear this master piece from the first time, in 89'.
I've always enjoyed skating so this was easy to love. Great lyrics, fantastic drumming and hoppin' guitar. Knopfler's low voice resonates with an impeccable groove.
This song has gotten me thru many summers. Love to stargaze with a joint in hand with this song playing on my Bluetooth speaker. Learned how to play it on drums. Dire Straits is a huge part of my life
This has always been one of my favourite DS songs. The chorus just rocks! And it captures perfectly the unique sound of his music, guitar and his cryptic style of story telling.
My fave lines are.. And the movie maker wanna be the story And the story was whatever was the song what it was... Who writes lyrics like that at all? Knopfler was a great story teller and used everyday speak of the common man. No eloquent words. He just laid them out like he was talking to a friend or something. Always loved that about his writing style. One of the greatest lyricists and he didn't even have to get all emo or tricky with fancy, frilly wordings. Lyrics are simplistic, but VERY intricately structured and arranged to perfection. I don't think there are any artists that write like knopfler. I don't even think that other artists could emulate that style. He's just one of those artists that has his own special thing going on that no one else can do. Brill.
So many years ago, still clear in my mind. Campus sidewalks stretched out for blocks weaving around the grass islands between red brick buildings. And I, floating across the world on skates with two six foot beauties gliding on either side of me. I was king of the world. Thanks Kay and Kim.
Wow fantastic, i saw the first concert of my life in 81, exactly like in this video, Mark with same blue jacket, I remember I bought one myself . Everyone was crazy for Dire Straits at that time and the world was much better than now. Sweet memories
Is it just me or is music like this from the 1960’s, 70’s & 80’s SO MUCH BETTER than the bullshit being played today? Call it what you want, but I’ll never agree with anyone that says music today has meaning and is just as good......LOL.
"slightly" underrated?? How about HUGELY?! May not be the greatest ROCK song of all time but DEFINETELY one of the most BEAUTIFUL ones!! Thanks a lot for posting it! You're the Man!
Skateaway... that's all. Gives me the shivers. Just a snippet of what was to come for them. Like a prelude to Zeppelin or Floyd to me. Just look at Mark. You could see and hear what was in store. Wow.
I don't inderstand why i read always " underrated" word about song and dire straits band. He is one of the artist with more fan in the word. Many many people love too much this band. Im underrated. You are underrated. No mark and your songs.
One of my favourite songs from the Straits. Underrated for sure. It's got a groove all of its own with suave, sophistication, and class for me. The bassline riff nails it and provides the perfect backbeat for Knopfler to pluck and strum his uniqueness all through the trip. For me take away Knopfler and Dire Straits is no more.
Agree 100% - the long fadeout is nothing short of orgasmic and is the most brilliant example of innovative guitar playing I have ever heard. I'm just wondering who the 6 semen-spattered morons who gave this a thumbs-down are. Probably retards who think that Robbie Williams is talented.
"Hallelujah. Here she comes." Young women/men don't realize the service they provide -- giving gentlemen without hope a reason to stick around for one more day. Youth/beauty is a variety of genius that is impossible to squander -- all you need do is be you. (preferably on skates) xxoo
Oh this song! Lake Shasta, waterskiing, coolers full of beer, girls in minikinis, white oak thunderfuck weed, warm nights, hotter girls, and Dire Straits. Oh my god what a bunch of great mammaries, oh, memories, never mind…
+Rigel7WasAlreadyUsed As I understand it DS were recording the album MM in New York when the brothers Knopfler had a tantrum and DK quit. I think that MK then re-recorded DK's stuff for the album. MK was so annoyed with his brother that he completely erased his name from the album sleeve notes. Linde joined the band a little while later before Love over Gold. I admire MK as a musician of course but I get the impression he is a hard person to get along with.
Perhaps. I find it weird that he (I assume) made whatever second guitarist was with them use a Strat. David usually played a Strat (sometimes his Tele), Hal, Jack, Clapton, and Phil Palmer. You'd think a player like him with an ear like his would want guitar two to have a different flavour. He mixed in the Les Paul around in '85 and used the Pensa a lot from '88 on or whenever but those early years are Strat on Strat.
The intro says Live on Countdown which was a long running Australian music show. No-one played live on the show even if perhaps they may have wanted to because it was recorded in a studio for T.V. once a week and they didn't have time to set up for each band in the time allotted. That's my guess from experience of this show. This is still my favourite Dire Straits song.
Why are posters/commenters so obsessed with calling everything "underrated?" Something tells me these same posters would say "But I discovered it BEFORE YOU" if all these songs or albums were gazillion sellers.
records just dont have this amazing sound anymore,,,,with all of the state of the art computerised equipment used to make records,,they just dont have the same quality for some reason....oh and,,,fucking fantastic song.!!
Bren Kelly So true. A perfect example is "Phoenix" by Fall Out Boy (kids make me listen to it). So much potential to have a powerful drum beat, but it was recorded with absolutely no depth and the drums can barely be felt. So many songs are like this now.
+genej313 Ok, you disagree when I say he's one of the best guitar players in the world? Comprehension counts! I own a copy of everything he's ever released, he must be terrible!
Gregory, I am decent guitar player and have been playing for 30 years. Relatively few guitarists manage to achieve a "signature sound"......Keith Richards, David Gilmour, Joe Walsh, The Edge, Stevie Ray......no one sounds like Mark Knopfler and that is quite an achievement. His guitar style comes from J J Cale, but he is far better and indeed is a very fine guitar player - it is not easy to do his picking style, but most of all he is such an inventive songwriter and his playing is very sympathetic to his songs. He is one of the best. Sure technically people like Jeff Beck, Eddie VH, Steve Vai are lightening fast and technically brilliant, but would you want to listen to them all day....? I doubt it!
I think you'll find that's Hal Lindes mimeing on rhythm guitar mate! Who, of course, did not actually appear on the Making Movies album, but joined for the tours.
Most underrated Dire Straits song ever
I love it so much 🙌♥️
That guitar is unthinkable
This video is soooooo classic
Uhhh no...this song has seen regular rotations over the years on classic rock Radio...
The Man’s Too Strong would be better suited as “under-rated”
Temónazo!! 🙌🏼
Tunnel of Love / Romeo & Juliet / Skateaway:. Possibly the best 3-song run on any album
Logged in just to like your comment. You could be right!
You are right! I totally agree!
Indeed! Also highly recommend "Brothers in Arms", "Telegraph Road", "Walk of Life" and, of course, "Sultans of Swing".
LOL! All wonderful songs, but....NOPE!
@@ednoponen2943 The album Love Over Gold (from which Telegraph Road is from) is another great album.
Mark Knoffler never sold out. He’s kept it real forever. Love his songs. Great man.
One of my all time favorites & a go to comfort song. 💕🫶🏼
Knopfler always paints a picture, tells a story, so clearly you can just see her, weaving in, out. Hallelujah, here she comes. Mmmm. Wish we could put Mark Knopfler in a time warp, so he never gets older.
hell he's gotten better with age. like a fine wine my friend......his tracker album is one of my alltime favorites
Still, listening to this reminds me of this time, his voice, the phrasing, and what a band this was. Today he is very different as we all change so must he. Whatever happened to David Knopflet?
One of their best and one of my favorites (it's hard to choose!)
I love this song❤
"And enchantè. What can I say?
Don't care at all!"
Thanks Mark and Dire Straits for Skateaway, playing rent free on my smiling, humming face!
I agree. Me too.
I think you like the whole band too ;-)
Dire Straits were a saving grace in the eighties.
They kept music cool when there was so much uncool shit on the airwaves.
MWL4466 what was uncool? All music was cool in the 80s fool
There was a lot of crap too.
Spandau ballet, Boy George, Vanilla ice, tears for fears, men at work, devo, lover boy, greg kihn, the clash, Joan Jet .....
I'm curious, are you naming these as examples of cool or examples of uncool?
ick
Pick Withers was absolutely amazing and this song is a masterpiece
ONE OF THE MOST BEUTIFUL SONGS IN THE WORLD ! . FROM GUADALAJARA MEXICO.
Excellent dire straights jam!
From an excellent dire straights album!
I sure do miss the eighties!!! What a great decade for music!
Yes!!! Much Love, Light, &PrayinUp❤
This is a compelling musical experience--like a fascinating dream.
The song that well and truly hooked me on Dire Straits. Wish I had seen them perform this one live... My favorite song from a favorite album.
Dire Straits is a huge part of my life
Awesome, if you got the drumming right I'd play the lead mate
love this song, love this band too. brings back great memories!
oh God how I loved this song.
This has always been one of my favourite DS songs. The chorus just rocks! And it captures perfectly the unique sound of his music, guitar and his cryptic style of story telling.
One of the finest bands ever... I love this song... Thank for sharing!

Absolutely BRILLIANT song/singer/band EVERYTHING. love love love D/S thank you so much for posting Max. 10/10

Your in good company...
that guitar intro... fantastic
"slightly" underrated?? How about HUGELY?! May not be the greatest ROCK song of all time but DEFINETELY one of the most BEAUTIFUL ones!! Thanks a lot for posting it! You're the Man!
My favorite
I was 12 and found this cassette on the stereo "Dire Straits"... this band introduced to rock n roll, lucky me
Skateaway... that's all. Gives me the shivers. Just a snippet of what was to come for them. Like a prelude to Zeppelin or Floyd to me. Just look at Mark. You could see and hear what was in store. Wow.
MY LIFE IS ALL ABOUT YOU DIRE STRAITS...YOU'RE MY BREATH MY SUNSHINE...GOD KNOWS HOW I'M THANKFUL TO HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS BAND IN MY LIFE...
A truly underrated song from one of the greatest underrated bands.
I don't inderstand why i read always " underrated" word about song and dire straits band. He is one of the artist with more fan in the word. Many many people love too much this band. Im underrated. You are underrated. No mark and your songs.
Enchantée, mon chéri!!
DIRE STRAITS, formidable!!! 🎸🎸🎸💃🏻

Amazing song from an amazing album !!
Left out the best part - the ending with the volume pedal use on guitar. Always thought that part was brilliant.
Good to know im not the only one who thought those swells were amazing, best part.
One of the best endings ever
He makes ripping Chords out of that thing way too easy. Waay to easy.
arrsff .. Pick Withers blow up my head....!
Incredible song and amazing drummer...
The best in the world.
The drumming is what made this song. Pick was a drummer's drummer.
J'adore celle là aussi! Enchanté!

How stunning is he , ahh gorge!
Oh Yeeeeeeeeeeees
I'm starting to get the impression that my little crush on MK is perfectly normal...
Marva Grossman oh it certainly is. I be crushing everyday 😍
Glad I'm not the only one
@@WahlbergBabey lol
Am I the only women who thinks Mark was so sexy? This talent and kindness makes him so sexy to me.
Agree 🥰
Just came across this song, haven't heard it in years, brings back alot of memories. I love it. He is kinda channelling Lou Reed, so good.
Mar.,30 , 2019 , Still a favorite .
DIRE STRAITS!!!!! simplemente una de las MEJORES BANDAS de ROCK de todas las épocas!!!
Para mi la mejor Banda!!!! DIRE STRAITS FOREVER!!!
Yeah. I have the album, and it's a very good one. Romeo and Juliet is my favourite tune.
Brothers in Arms is a fine album, too.
geweldig wat een talent die knopfler, rolemodel voor mij en vele anderen
♥️ this tune
beautiful song, should have more respect than it does.
Sensacional Mark . Único. Especial. Dire Straits banda inesquecível, mágica. Espetacular. ! 💎 💎 Um Shoow! Adoro ❤ ❤ ❤ PARABÉNS ⚘ 👏 👏 👏
Thx Doggy, your uploads are so appreciated!
Que canção maravilhosa, um vivaa aos Dire Straits. ''Rooler girl, dont worry, DJ play the movies...''
Pretty much the ultimate groove ;)
Your Channel is Amazing! Thanks !
This is an awesome song!
Love this song, seems clean everytime.
Amazing songwriting. Love these guys.
Track. Tune 🎶 Toro Torro Taxi. What a story teller & player. Only now realising Alan Clark was on this album...!!!
❤️
I wouldn't have noticed that if you hadn't pointed it out. Fun to watch, I bet they were laughing about lipsyncing.
Great song!!
I love your videos. Long life Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler
My fave DS song
My heart skips a beat... everytime.
that's how perfection sounds
one of the first Mtv videos.
Oh this song! Lake Shasta, waterskiing, coolers full of beer, girls in minikinis, white oak thunderfuck weed, warm nights, hotter girls, and Dire Straits. Oh my god what a bunch of great mammaries, oh, memories, never mind…
awesome song
wonderful song!
That's the music I love!
What drives this song is that clean Strat sound from Hal Lindes guitar, a perfect counterpoint to MK's lead.
+John Gibson Made all the wierder by Hal Lindes not being on Making Movies.
+Rigel7WasAlreadyUsed As I understand it DS were recording the album MM in New York when the brothers Knopfler had a tantrum and DK quit. I think that MK then re-recorded DK's stuff for the album. +Tracey S. I am not seeing cords coming from the electric guitars either.... still the best song!
Tight song
Why are posters/commenters so obsessed with calling everything "underrated?" Something tells me these same posters would say "But I discovered it BEFORE YOU" if all these songs or albums were gazillion sellers.
Literary Lyrics, so nice to hear in my Ear..Rock n Roll Dream
Pick Withers holds this band together. For him drums were not something to hit, they were an instrument to play!
Sublime
records just dont have this amazing sound anymore,,,,with all of the state of the art computerised equipment used to make records,,they just dont have the same quality for some reason....oh and,,,fucking fantastic song.!!

Exactly, cheers.
This tune is what turned me on to what a great storyteller the man is. Even if he wasn't one of the best guitar players in the world.
+genej313 Ok, you disagree when I say he's one of the best guitar players in the world? Comprehension counts! I own a copy of everything he's ever released, he must be terrible!
You are dead wrong about him not being the best guitar player in the world. And he still is .
Read the comments above, comprehension counts!
Gregory, I am decent guitar player and have been playing for 30 years.

I agree with the OP except about Knopfler not being one of the best guitarists.
Uh, MK is widely considered to be one of the best, both now and then.
Simply epic .. Epicly simple
I think you'll find that's Hal Lindes mimeing on rhythm guitar mate! Who, of course, did not actually appear on the Making Movies album, but joined for the tours.
Yeah, and there is a funny moment 2:39, when Mark's right hand reaches the microphone, but his guitar still sounds. Magic :D
ye, ok, it's a playback, pick withers also did not try too hard to follow the track.
one of the greatest songs of all time, imho.
so good lookin'! :P
Agree!!
Even after 30 years, I still dream of being beautiful Mark's Roller Girl...
Toro toro taxi, see you tomorrow my son.
She lets a big truck graze her hip
Absolutely brilliant. This song inspired me to play guitar. Gene Davis' comment it moronic.
+Jason Deckman
Totally agree on points 1 and 3. Never did learn to play the guitar though.
Countdown 29th March 1981
Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe, the roller girl. RIP x

TOTALMENTE DE ACUERDO...;-)
Making movies is by far the best i agree
hell yeah !
Have you heard of Kingdom come? :)
