My conductor doesn’t use a baton, so she just does these really extra hand movements that involve her entire body.
She doesn’t use the baton anymore because she “accidentally” always threw it at the first chair viola.

This is so so accurate. I remember one conductor where the whole orchestra would mutter about his "below the belt conducting"- he kept his hands so low that no one back in the winds and brass could see his hands from behind his music stand. And then he would get angry when we didn't play the way he wanted (because, you know, he was telling us exactly what to do with his hands that none of us could see...) And then there's Valery Gergiev. I'm not even an orchestral musician anymore and watching performances where he's conducting gives me anxiety!!!

In highschool it was always a struggle to understand where my conductor was. I remember playing a piece called Arabesque, where the first 2 1/2 minutes or so are a flute solo accompanied by the occasional brass/percussion hit. While there is a time signature, the solo is generally played freely by the soloist. We did fine during all of our practices, and when the night of the concert arrived, he decided to dramatically cue that massive brass sting - but he did it 2 measures early. The brass section, not used to the cue, understandably went along with it. So I just skipped ahead to where the solo continued, like nothing happened. If you didn't know the piece, nothing would've seemed out of place. But we never let our conductor forget.

I'm priviledged to have watched dozens of great conductors (from the audience, but having some musicianship myself), and this video is spot-on. I even recognized (I think) a couple of specific conductors' signature moves, LOL. Another wonderful thing I've seen: When the conductor does absolutely nothing for 1-2 seconds and just stands there basking in how excellent the orchestra is, before starting up again on the next phrase. This is rare & only happens with the best conductor/orchestra pairs, when the piece is well-known and is going well; it's almost like he's conducting telepathically or subliminally. As an audience member, I LOVE those times because you can feel in the air how in-tune the musicians are with each other and with the conductor - like the music has taken on a life of its own.

I had the same music teacher for both classes which made it easy for me to understand his conducting. I always held deep respect for his music acumen and conducting skills. He really made it easy to feel the energy of the piece and play/sing accordingly as a result. I miss my high school conductor dearly and I hope he's doing well.
