This is the best and clearest explanation that I've seen this far! I usually plant my tank and then decide what fish will suite the plants. Thank you for the excellent explanation and clear guidelines for the aquarium community! Appreciated! Greetings from South Africa!
Good point! Both my tanks are smaller due to space constraints, and even then, I’ve already spent all my birthday money on plants for them. More business for plant sellers, I guess. ;)
As big as possible and that you can afford not to skimp. That is not only the cost of the big tank, but the big ticket lighting and filtration for "big". Amano liked extra wide. So,depth was nice to him. But,his Lisbon tank reminds me of a huge version of a 6' 100 gallon I had. Shallow and long was great for today's smaller, choice, water plants.
I find 10g and under and 55g and higher tanks to be the hardest to scape. I love messing around with my 20g high and I would love to get a 20g long to scape.
i have 2.7ft tank.. with 2.7ft tall.. the problem with these tank is yes like u have mention i do need powerfull lighting.. even current setup im using two rgb light 24w + 22w.. but the plant still didnt make it.. and it is very difficult to do the maintenance and planting process.. can you recommend suitable tools for this tall tank and what suitable lighting for this tank size tq
Im so glad i found your channel! I just received my tank i want to take the proper steps to make sure everything is right before putting any fishes in there. Not to mention i want a planted tank and you have been so informative! Thank you!!
George Farmer has a tank called "Aquascaper 600" its 600mm (L) x 500mm (W) x 360mm (H) wich in inches is 23 5⁄8(L) x 19 11⁄16(W) x 14 11⁄64(H) ~110liters / 28.5gallons. This size looks really good for a planted/aquascape tank in my opinion, I would recommend that for anyone whos unsure what size to go with
I've been doing fish for 30years.. Been a while.. But I still have know how and researched experimented many sized aquariums.. I can't stand anything under 36 inches x 24 x 24 inches.. Unless ur sitting 5 cm from anything smaller ur wasting you're time and effort.. The only reason you would start smaller is to learn basic fish keeping water and substrate conditioning and maintenance for it to thrive.. Once u learn properly is the only two me to dedicate yourself to spending any kind of money on setting up big.. For a basic beginner aqua scape nano scape terrarium etc I wouldn't spend more than $150 completed.. Making sure to use adequate lighting and easy care low maintenece flaura and fauna.. Not spending enough will bottle neck you're experience and many lose interest.. And over spending shouldn't be an option either.. Their are many methods you can use to scape build and create you're environment just by mimicking an environment as so in nature.. Adaptability of all living entities inside you're artificial aqua scape etc.. Is the key to it's or any aquarium terrarium garden etc etc.. So basic research and experimentation will be the key to anyone whom is interested in nature and it's beauty.. I'm just staring my first 6' x 2' x 2' aqua scape with discus, tetras, and dwarf gouramis.. Will keep u posted.. One hit tip.. Always look for great quality second hand tanks ornaments rocks etc.. Many start this conquest and lose interest.. Can save yourself thousands.. Peace out nature warriors..
hi! Great video mate , but my query is that I already have a 110 gal fish tank currently holding mix Chichlids from last 3 years , height is 24''inches depth is 18'' inches and the length is 58'' inches , I want to shift to a planted aquarium holding Tetra..Widows angels etc similar compatible lot. So is the height 24'' inches good for plants /? need advise thanks
I just started up a little over a month ago and after toooons of research I decided on a 20 gallon long. I have two rummy tetras and two ottos for now. Def planning on adding some more tetras, rasboras, and shrimp in the future. I find the 12 in height ideal for planting and the light coverage is good too. Just be aware of what your trying to add and if it would work in your tank under the parameters you have You could have the greatest idea (so you think) and be totally wrong about execution and waste a lot of money. Worth taking your time before starting anything too crazy
As far as the the real size of a tank (generally) and the connectedness of the fish inside it, it is 'not' the size of the tank, it is the surface space.
I’m inclined to agree. The 40 breeder is a shorter that has more floor space then most other tanks it’s size which gives you more room to create your scape
Led lights are way cheaper and provide the same sorta light. You could have gone with a different setup for that large tank or more substrate/sand/soil/hardscape. To each their own and all but know how to work with what you have. The Flash is a badass, love the time he said that was for charity Clark and then left him far behind.
I have a 40 , it works for me . It has low tech plants , no Co2.I have like a couple guppies, a couple rainbows , one Betta and a gourami.I put a small guppy in recently and it disappeared, I think the rainbows had him for lunch.Other than that the rest are doing fine so far.
I want to do shubunkin goldfish. I got so excited when you mentioned goldfish with plants! But you didn't go into much detail about what can be put with them. Is it possible you would, or have already done a video on it?
I have two 5 and a half gallon long tanks that are soon to be set up. It this size ok for a planted aquarium? I’m looking to put shorter plants in the front and taller plants in the back.
Well, I'm now seeing better success with Seachem Flourish Advance. It's supposedly ideal for supplementing substrate/dirt loving plants such as amazon swords. I also utilize Flourish Excel to suppress algae growth on my leaves. So far, all of Seachems ferts are paying off since I've started using them in 2015.
i wanna do an aquascape, I have a 50 gal long breeder tank and a 35 gallon tall tank. both are 2 big for my apartment. I'm thinking 20 gallons or so but short and long
Yes! I recently purchased this to complement my 55g. It's the ideal height for the 2nd row of my 48" wide metal stand. Now, if only I'd get around to jump-starting my new beauty. You know what they say...TOO MANY TANKS...WAYYY TOO LITTLE TIME😶
Meanwhile... Me: i have an old XL critter keeper, dollar store sand and my old beach glass, shell, rock collection and 20 bucks for marimo and an airstone.

Quite probably a dumb question but, how small is (sufficiently) small for aquascaping?
George Farmer has a tank called "Aquascaper 600" its 600mm (L) x 500mm (W) x 360mm (H) wich in inches is 23 5⁄8(L) x 19 11⁄16(W) x 14 11⁄64(H) ~110liters / 28.5gallons. Two words: Grow out. It's okay to start small, save then go big... Grow out what you want plants, fish, etc. In my case, fish explosion...

Hayley Zimmermann I agree, 20 long sounds perfect for a beginner get started with fish and plants!
It would be expensive but on larger tanks can you put a light to shine through the side to get the lower parts? Or would that not be recommend?
20g longs or 40b are the way to go!
I always thought a 40b was one of the all around best tanks for anything
As far as the the real size of a tank (generally) and the connectedness of the fish inside it, it is 'not' the size of the tank, it is the surface space.
Yeah it all comes down to money!!!! The one thing that holds us all back! 40 breeder? I would say is the best tank for aquascape?
I’m inclined to agree. The 40 breeder is a shorter that has more floor space then most other tanks it’s size which gives you more room to create your scape
Can you put sand on top of aqua-soil? I like the look of sand more but would like to have thriving plants

That was a very useful video.

What is the minimum size of aquarium for gold fish
I did a 45p scaped tank and doing the conversion to dollars cost R600 but its epic.
I'm looking at doing a 4ft aquascape tank, more about the scape then fish. what would be best height and depth?
I have two 5 and a half gallon long tanks that are soon to be set up. It this size ok for a planted aquarium? I’m looking to put shorter plants in the front and taller plants in the back.
I would like to add- get a high clarity glass tank. It makes a huge difference for aquascaping. ADA 60P is a great size- that wont break the bank.
I'm using seachem potassium, iron and regular flourish is there anything else I should be using or maybe a different fertilizer

You rocked it! Great job on the video. Love your videos. 🐡👍🇨🇦
i wanna do an aquascape, I have a 50 gal long breeder tank and a 35 gallon tall tank. both are 2 big for my apartment. I'm thinking 20 gallons or so but short and long
Very true!
Haha gold fish need big tank !! Still ppl dot get it . nice video
I will say 20 long is a real nice size for a smaller planted tank
I think it’s more the perfect plants to put in the tank.. it’s all about scale
Love the videos great job
Love you Channel can you do more videos talking about moss please
For me its 33 gallon long . I like low profile tank

Excellent vid!
