  • Let's discuss the mood and atmosphere of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Something is off, and funnily enough, it's got nothing to do with Cait Sith's "throwing boxes" mini game, or Squeenix blowing their "Sephiroth load" every 5 minutes. LINKTR.EE/SRGC

This is exactly how I felt. They got the atmosphere totally wrong.
The world of FFVII is a sparsely populated, dying world where everyone is struggling and suffering. The world of Rebirth is full of happy, healthy people having a wonderful time, all the time.
They made Kalm a bustling metropolis, instead of a rundown old mining town where everyone is out of work due to the closure of the Mithryl Mine.
Corel Prison was an absolute joke. It’s supposed to be a place where a knife in the back is never far away.
Cosmo Canyon was an almost religious retreat for the study of the plant but Rebirth turned it into a tourist trap.
It’s a major issue for a lot of modern TV and gaming that the writers are unable to be sincere and serious for more than 2 minutes.

See, I wasn't as bothered by Kalm, but your point still stands. It's simply not right. And I didn't want to get into cosmo canyon for the sake of keeping the video short, but I will say that I was very immersed and excited going into it, and when I left the region, I said out loud "I feel like I am just playing a video game, nothing else" if that makes sense.

I loved rebirth, it might be one of my favourite games of all time, even accounting for recency bias, but there can be doubt that Corel prison was very poorly done. The ludo-narrative dissonance of super soilder Cloud who fights monsters, giant mechs and legendary soilders getting taken out by some nameless hencheman with a bat was very jarring.

Modernity has turned gaming into a checklist that's the core problem with all gaming. Everyone was fine with the changes made to REMAKE's honeybee inn sequence. The issue is they took that, and put it in Rebirth a thousand times over. Adding all the glitz, and glam, and basically polishing off sections of the game that were supposed to be broody and emotional. Bad guys can't even be bad anymore, and have to be made comical for fear of accidentally appearing intimidating, and making a player feel uncomfortable.
    It's just depressing.

I definitely feel this I loved rebirth, but it is alot in the best and worst ways. I love all the extra side content, but sometimes it feels like they could have done more with less. My favorite scene in rebirth is Barret confrontating dyne, but i also can't help but feel the beautiful simplicity in the original was better. Dyne's death in the orginal felt so real and impactfull, well rebirth feels like a soap opera. Everything is bigger and more dramatic, dyne is presented as more mentaly ill and far gone, barret gets guilttripped, you have a big dramatic fight scene, the shinra soilders kill dyne, then they have the palmer fight right after. Well the orginal was simple but so raw, Dyne is a man that is just like Barret who walked the same path of revenge, but was to fargone to live on. And then as Barret mourns him he detests that they both had blood on their hands he isn't any different from Dyne. And it's such a simple scene but it captures survivors guilt, the nature of life and how unjust and tragic it can be. And you can get as much out of the og Dyne scence as you can read into it. Well Rebirth and it's Dyne scene lays down so much its hard to know what to focus on, it is emotionaly resonant. But it doesn't leave the lasting imapct of the og, both because it doesnt let the scene have time to sink in and breath, and because it isn't as focused as the og game due to the desire to make everything bigger and better

Love NCAA football games, have loved many games over the years from Disgaea to God of War, Chrono Trigger, Elder Scrolls, NBA Street, Legacy of Kain, Mortal Kombat and 100s of these. Even back to Pokemon when it came out of even Final Fantasy Mystic Quest back on the NES. Im 36 years old and have played/been lost in many game worlds. I remember when FFX was coming out i would have sold my 7th Grade soul just to own the stategy guide and look through all the weapons and stuff before the game was even out. That said, FF7 is my all time absolute favorite game that did something for me i havent reexperienced since. And even so, I played this remake up until i got the buggy after golden saucer and just couldnt force myself to play anymore. That was months and months ago now maybe a year or so idk.. The game is still collecting dust somewhere, i just cant get into putting it back in. Im not complaining, at this point I dont think they could do it right if they wanted to. Rebirth conflicts me. You can tell which moments were done by DEI loving idiots and which parts where done by corporate idiots and which part were done by the actual creatives. From nerfing Tifa and Aerith's body types. Aerith's hips were WAY wider in the original game, along with being one of the girls that made the world go round according to Queen if you know what I mean. They straight up RUINED Cid! No Rocket Town, no interesting story, no Shera... Just... Nothing. Side lined, even made into a piloting dolt for no reason other than they could. Vincent should have been playable there was no way they couldn't have made that work.
Plus some things that really don't add much or anything at all. Spoilers from here I guess.
The Gi created the Black Materia... Okay, Their story didn't add much to the game at all. No screaming planet, the Seto scene was weak, Dyne was no longer an interesting character, Sephiroth is in here too often-and I HATE his voice! I like Tyler Hoechlin but MAN does he not work in the role! Same with Caleb Pierce as Zack, just not their characters. And the ending....... I have no idea what's going on.
But then... The stuff that's good is pretty good indeed. Cloud struggling to keep a grip on reality, Barret is still an awesome character despite some parts of his side stories being butchered, Cait Sith somehow is the show stealer, good gameplay and the majority of the musical score is INCREDIBLE!
I do look forward to a proper remake of the original game one day, but this... alternate timeline is just whack. I think the more fitting name for this series is "Final Fantasy XIII: The Good Version."

At first, I was kind of glad that the Remake games didn't shy away from the silliness. I guess I was worried that the impact Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts had on the IP would've pushed Square to make it too grim and broody. But, I think they over-corrected. I agree with what you're saying, and I feel the Remake games border on feeling like 'theme-parks' centered on the original.
While the tone and pacing problems failed to elevate the experience of playing the games for me, I'd argue the theme and narrative changes were more actively hostile to my enjoyment. Still, that horse has probably been beaten into paste at this point, so it's nice to hear some less discussed takes.

  • @DarkScarlatti
    @DarkScarlatti День тому +2

I think your approach on the mood breakers of serious segments is very valid and I believe without any proof other than my observation and conclusion, is the result of people outside the writers and direction who want to make this game more PC, acceptable and safe for as much people as possible treating the gamers with glass gloves. I have seen other aspects of the game where I can see they went out of their way to change or add things to have this "PC and safe for the everyone" angle very evident.
And I know this is a buzz word nowadays, but I strongly believe the DEI department and consultancies are to blame, they are notorious to push "safe" narratives that don't offend or make people feel any sort of discomfort, but the sacrifice when doing this is high and one of the results is trying to minimize the seriousness of what evil looks like, even if it's just a game.

The Dyne scene and the ending were both just so jarring when compared to the original in my opinion.

I think they need to let some moments breathe more. A good example being the end of Red's trial. Keep the music going, and give control back to the player to let them decide when to further the story along, e.g. trigger the cutscene by going back the way you came after a certain distance.
But that's about as far as I'd take it. I don't think most would really want to see these characters bummed out too much of the time. The creators want you to spend time in the world they've built, so if a lot of those chunks of time you're mired in the heaviness that hangs in the air, that could backfire. I think if things like my idea above are implemented, it would be a good compromise. Find more ways to give power to the player for them to curate their own experience when it makes sense to do so.

It gave thoughts like this is creepy, this town should be ash, why are there all these people here? They LITERALLY explain the mystery in 2 minutes of being in the town---why not at least wait until the end of the chapter. Corel/Wall Market, no choice with a T rating. I WISH it had some of the grit, but they literally couldn't. Even the dudes following you around and attacking you in Corel, isn't as intimidating. There is no piece of media where the scene of Cloud in the honey bee inn could ever be duplicated. The issue is they probably NEEDED this game rated T to get as many sales as possible, but the OG fans, the dudes who would've spread the hype due to word of mouth are who they really needed to satisfy with this and the changes messed it up.

I agree with your critique but I wonder if people who have only played the remake games would get the same impression.
My biggest critique of Rebirth is the poor integration of the mini-games/side quests with the flow of the main narrative. Like I complete the story in one town and everyone is ready to move out. But then some new quests pop up and I stay to do them. And even the quest givers are all "Oh, you're still here?"

      @starroadgamecafe  День тому +2

I heavily agree with this sentiment. A lot of folks complain about the amount of mini-games. it's not that.... It's that they feel disconnected from the main story. As if they were an entirely separate point of production in the game.

I can see your point on this, but Coates in the original was a bit higher class than everyone else in the prison, although not that glamorous l admit. Is anything, it was way too crowdy for that is supposed to be a prison, and they should have locked the side quests until after you were done with this chapter.
The one part that I did mind, though, was the other part you showed at the Cosmo Canyon. It was such a beautiful and intimate moment of your teammates just opening up to you, but now have the city's just there for a (beautiful) ceremony for some reason.
As you said, it's an amazing game and as someone who grew with the original, I'm glad to be able to play it, but they forgot to be quiet, sometimes.

Funnily enough, I never talked to Coates in the original game. Every time I just followed Barret on his way to Dyne, then got sent to Coates like we'd talked. I was too engrossed in Barret's story to explore everywhere.
I absolutely hated Cosmo Canyon in Rebirth. It was so big and crowded that once you got fast travel points I just used those rather than actually move around the place. The vibe of the place felt less spiritual and more like a cult running a tourist spot.
And why the heck didn't we get the Cosmo Canton music fading out as we got further in to Red's trial? They had one job.

I’m gonna withhold judgment on that scene until after Part 3 (probably called Reclaim, or Returns). What I didn’t like at all was how they changed Dyne’s death. His original death was much more impactful to Barrett’s arc and narrative theme of the game as a whole.

I've seen these points raised in other videos, but not as focally as you've done here. However, I think holding up the specific decisions of the remake to those of the original do this argument a disservice, the original is a goofy game. Corel prison is a goofy place in the original. It doesn't feel dangerous, it feels like a Saturday morning cartoon depiction of danger.
The way I would frame the argument is that the narrative of Rebirth is discordant with the environmental and atmospheric storytelling within its own game. Corel Prison looks like yet another undercity, underfoot of Shinra, a place people can't climb the ladder out of. But most of your time isn't spent engaging with this as you haven't been condemned there, now you're an outside investigator being exploited to win a Chocobo race. To the original's credit, the Chocobo race after Dyne was a fitting moment, that ultimately Barret's personal tragedy is completely ignored and even though the party established Barret's innocence, they still needed to barter in commercial entertainment value in order to rightfully be freed. In Rebirth, the chocobo race has no such contrast or framing, never mind that of the original. If they replaced it with some other message or narrative, it would be fine, but instead its presence feels entirely mechanical, just to introduce chocobo racing and because it was there in the original. It's there because it's fun, not because it serves an important narrative role.
I think Rebirth prioritizes fun too much. Sometimes the mood of the story or the environment shouldn't be fun. If there's any comparison to be made in the original, it's not with its specific choices but that it understood how to balance its various moods and emotional beats. Rebirth is obsessed with squeezing as much fun out of every moment and place, and that's what undermines it in my opinion.

    I liked Queens blood,
I did not enjoy looking for towers in every single area, i found myself being burnt out that i had to take a break for a few days during my first play, i would have prefered if they made progression to areas more liner with branching areas for side content. Wish they would have used the resources they spent on most of the world intel activities into more interesting side quests or a conversation system like in fire emblem to enhance the relationships between the characters.
Overall for me the game was an 8/10.

I will disagree, FF7 was a goofy game all around, if you take corel, as somber in the original, I sugest you play it again, all the thugs but Dyne are goofying around, we had the chocobo carriege bringing you back when you kept fainting in desert, always the non-chalant cloud shrug emote 🤷‍♂.... wow what a depth and despair
The problem is that the nostalgia of playing the game back in the day makes you think that the game is better than it really was, just that.... the OG is great is my favorite game of all times, but compare the cosmo canyon, mt nibel areas with the original, or Kalm and Costa Del Sol and Gongaga (which was missable in the OG), they made a 30h movie worth in this game

@@phgo91vga I'm not saying o.g. didn't have it's fair share of goofy moments. But I'm not sure it's nostalgia making the serious moments feel less serious. I just couldn't feel that same faithfulness in the Corel Prison area, and a few other spots.

Even with the original FF7, I felt the story went off the rails once you left Midgar. Now with the pacing, loss of atmosphere from the original, I'm just going to watch a playthrough of Rebirth instead of sinking another 200 hours as I like to get platinum trophies. Also, the amount of sidequests and minigames is absurb in my opinion. I'm a firm believer you can do more with less. I wouldn't mind a pocket edition of this game like they did with FF15. Nonetheless, it's an incredible feat in gaming. But I would be overwhelmed with the sheer scale and scope of FF7 Rebirth. Mind you, I'm saying this as someone who played and platinumed all the Legend of Heroes Trails series so far.

@ there’s the weapon shop owner that tells you to fuck off, fairly tough enemies in the surrounding desert for that point in the game, and just as much seedy shit and human trafficking as wall market. It doesn’t seem intimidating but then again we already know no character will die there and our party fight deities and a world government on the reg so I really don’t see how any of these characters would come off more scary if done differently. I also think that while Gus is played charismatic that a character like that involved in crime is often much more imposing than an eye patched mob boss that never smiles. You see that more when you do the side quest in his arena and Gus has some pretty spontaneous bouts of anger sprinkled in
