I've been repairing off and on for about 20 years. The blip in the playback is caused by a stretched drive belt and a damaged pinch roller (contains a divot from where the tape player has sat in play mode for years). Usually, the eyes and mouth motors can be unfrozen by carefully moving the eyes and mouth manually with your fingers and using really strong batteries (like advanced alkaline such as Rayovac Fusion or Procell intense by Duracell). If the tape deck is the earlier metal plated type (85-86), the pinch roller can easily be acquired online at any electronic parts store (its just a standard 9mmx6mmx1.5mm pinch roller thats commonly found in walkman style tape decks and boom boxes). The larger of the 2 drive belts can also be acquired pretty easily online. The smaller of the 2 drive belts on the metal tape deck is a little harder to track down. The larger of the 2 drive belts is also the same size belt on the 86-90 Teddy's with the white molded plastic tape deck, Mickey Mouse, Mother Goose, and Snoopy. The pinch roller for the plastic tape deck Teddy (and also the Mickey Mouse, Mother Goose, and Snoopy) is slightly larger in size and harder to track down. Luckily I was able to find a seller online who had a large surplus of those and acquired as much as I could from them before they ran out.

Thanks for all the great info!. I think i will work on correcting the drive belt issue. Im going to do some research and try to track the parts down. I enjoy doing this kind of stuff and love the challenge. Thanks again !!

@@Popculturecreep The larger of the 2 belts is usually in the 5.6 or 5.7 size range (depending on the supplier that's selling them) it could be that the 5.6 is a perfect fit or that the 5.7 is a perfect fit. Sometimes the SBO belt is a better fit. Sometimes the SBS belt is a better fit. It all depends on who the supplier is that's selling them. I've ended up with missized belts before when buying from some suppliers. The new drive belts should not be too tight nor too loose. I've seen some install drive belts that are too tight which can put a strain on the tape deck motor and cause it to smoke (it happened to me once). Then if the belts are too loose it can cause the tape deck spindel to fail and come off track.

@@bryanjones0185 Do you repair them as a hobby, or as a paid service?

@@theswiss02 It's just a fun little hobby I do on the side for extra money. Been repairing for over 20 years and selling on ebay for 10 years. I leave all the one's I've sold up on my youtube channel for reference in the event somebody needs to see the one's that I've done in the past or in the event somebody buys one and needs to return it for an exchange or refund before the 14 day money back guarantee runs out.

By the sounds of it he might need a replacement drive belt, since that's causing the noises during the tape play. Great fix btw :)
