This is probably the saddest death. She is the kindest and most innocent person in the show and than she gets burned alive by her own parents.
hodor
I think it might be the most disturbing thing I've ever seen dramatised. The actress who played Shireen deserves enormous credit.
SERIOUSLY THO. First time I watched that scene I was just sitting there in DUMBSTRUCK Horror that that was happening, mouth wide open, tears streaming down my face :''(
Those cries are still so hard to hear...
Absolutely. Ugh. I still like this episode, but I fucking hate it at the same time. You know what I mean.
Imo easily the worst/hardest scene in GoT (to date)
I can't listen. I have to mute every time :'''''''(((
shireens death is the most disturbing death on the show imo, it should have been the last scene, it was by far more dramatic than the danny/dragon anti climax scene.
Fully agreed
The Shireen scene shattered me when I first saw it, and no matter how many times I've watched it since, it continues to deeply upset me. I found it highly inappropriate and offensive that it wasn't the closing scene of the episode (to give it the full weight and solemn reverence it deserved), and that we then travel to a sunny stadium full of cheering people, and the episode ends with "Dany's thrilling first dragon ride". The showrunners did a grave disservice to Shireen and the wonderful young actress who played her. I'm glad you didn't follow suit, and ended this episode where the GoT episode _should_ have ended.
That scream still hurts me to the bottom of my heart.
Stannis ‘bring your daughter to the slaughter’ Baratheon
Stannis ‘if hopes are dwindling, use Shireen for kindling’ Baratheon
-Stannis "Hold Her Tighter, I'll Get a Lighter" Baratheon
-Stannis "Set an Heir Ablaze, and the Results Will Amaze" Baratheon
-Stannis "Cook Up My Heir, I'll Have Her Medium-Rare" Baratheon
Dude, I almost spilled my tea reading these! xD LOL!
The last one killed me 💀💀💀💀 medium rare bruuuuuuuh
Fucking savage
Stannis "See you in Hell -- what's that smell?" Baratheon
Stannis "When things are dire, set your kid on fire" Baratheon
By far one of the worst sounds you can hear on a tv show.
Shireen screaming should have been the end of episode 9. They really overestimate how much we care about Danny.
Worse death in the show by a mile. That was crazy and so horrible hearing those screams.
I'd hold the door open for another "worst death" contender, but this one is definitely high on the list
At least he went out a hero. This sweet little girl died screaming in agony for nothing at all.
Honestly nothing is worse then burning alive. Mance almost came close but he died so he didnt suffer too much coz of Jon. For a child to burn is another thing entirely. I think the only reason this is even a debate is bec the camera didnt show us her actual burning.
Yeah, that's fair. We didn't actually see the tearing-apart piece by piece for *spoilers redacted* but the futility and youth and build up in this episode made this death an especially tough one.
The ONLY thing that made it the tiniest bit less devastating (personally) was that they telegraphed it pretty much from the moment we met Shireen, and included lots of foreshadowing throughout this one episode. What made The Door difficult (again, just for me personally) was that it has the same innocence, combined with the huge reveal and very little heads-up for the death itself. Overall, perhaps it's a tie...
There were large parts of Season 5 I skimmed, and Shireen's death was one of them. Yeah, Davos would have died fighting to save her if he had been present...
Shireen’s death never fails to make me cry. Such a great performance from the actress!
5:31 "Stannis is such an idiot."
Wecome to TV.Stannis. Book.Stannis is an absolute badass.
@Gevorg1989 He literally avoids burning people in the books, bud. Even enemies. Maybe read the novels before embarrassing yourself?
The one part of the show, in all the episodes, that I had to pause and just walk away while crying my eyes out.
I have to read the books fast so that i can know why people really liked Stannis
Stannis is one of the best characters.
Dumb and Dumber (D&D) fcking ruined entire series of ice and fire.
Trust me,if you can, read the books.
After you read them you"ll see perfect world of "Ice and Fire".
@agnat86 D&D suck and completely ruined Stannis' character. It pains me completely.
@Gevorg1989 They won tons of Emmy's for the first 5 seasons. That's how much material is already written. You can see visibly in seasons 6-8 the Emmy nominations plummet. They more so ruined PARTS of the novel, not the series as a whole. Some people are overly dramatic. But they 100% did ruin Stannis' storyline, from season 1 they openly stated in interviews that they hate him as a character and were purposefully making him worse for the show. Not a debatable subject. There's reasons he's less charismatic in the show seasons 2 through 4. There's a reason they gave Jon his storyline post him visiting the Wall (spoiler: in the novel he actually gets the Wildlings on his side).
Because DnD hated Stannis' character they just fucked him basically
I think one of my biggest complaints about Game of Thrones is how they end certain episodes. I feel like they opt into the cool factor way too much. This episode 100% should have ended at Shireens death. I don't want to go through an entire other scene right after a little girl was burnt to death by her father, I can't concentrate or think clearly.
I agree, it was too much of a mood whiplash. However, I think they knew some people would possibly quit the show if it ended on that note, so they threw in the uplifting Daenerys scene in hopes that people didn't leave the episode with a bad taste in their mouth.
I think it was very deliberate. I bet the creators of the show debated this a lot and came to the conclusion that it simply was too much to end on that note. Butchering grown-ups who (at least partly) created their own mess is bad enough, but burning an innocent child alive... The subsequent part with the dragon softens the effect a little. Personally, I think they made the right decision.
demopem I know it was deliberate, it was deliberate because they'd rather end on dragons and dany whenever they get the chance rather than end on something that makes more sense. Thats why I said they opt into the cool factor way too often.
It ruins the pacing of the episode and in turn ruins both scenes to a degree, you are cut off from Shireens crackling and burning body by people literally cheering in an arena.
From an artistic standpoint, I completely agree with with you Saelon. I think it's hard to transition to the arena sequence after such a dark and depressing scene. It took me awhile to get into Jorah's fight (which by itself was a good scene) because my mind was too preoccupied thinking about the little girl that got burned alive by her own father.
But during season 5 there was extreme criticism of the show for its dark nature and its treatment of female characters. The episode that ended on Sansa's rape left viewers furious. I think HBO and D&D were worried that if they ended this episode on that note, many viewers might just quit.
Saelon...shireens death should have definitely been shown last, then no music after the episodes ending. sloppy writing and QC
Even now, the two things that cut through me every time. 1. Shireen's screams and 2. Caitlin's whail (Red Wedding)
Please, give her a hug for me, we all felt the same way for sweet Shireen! Still gets me!
NOTIFICATION SQUAAAD!
This episode should be titled "Father of the Year"
I had always had the argument with friends about who's death was worse Robbs, Neds, or Oberyns. Until we saw this shit. Fuck this show for making me hear a little girl burn to death lol
and it was the first time that a character died who had a bad past. This was pretty uncommon. The characters with a bad past where normally the characters who were safe and were climbing the ladder.
Tyrion, dany, jon, baelish and so on
Chris P. And no jon snow there to put her out of her misery!
Fuck D&D for making Stannis do that.
Jarin - possible book spoilers ahead
this will happen in the books, too. At least in a similar way. It's no coincidence that Stannis is stuck in the snow right now and that his merged sigil with Rhllor shows a burning stag.
+solgnaleb dont think so. the burning stag is for me no reason that it will happen
This was probably the most difficult scene for me in all of Game of Thrones. It was heart-wrenching (to say the least) and haunted me for days. I still hate watching it.
Oh, man. Just imagine my situation: when I first watch this episode, my younger sister was of Shireen's age. I went through a horror not trying to think that it was my sister instead of Shireen. And today, when I watched this video, I felt the same thing.
One of the 2 deaths that got me mad af Shireen and Ned.
I'm kinda glad that Hodwarts didn't overly react during the Shireen scene. It's sad. Shireen was a sweet character and died a horrible way, but it's a TV show! From some peoples reactions you'd think it was their family member or something! Plenty of deaths on the show hit me harder than this, including Jon's in the next episode.
That look of horror as the princess was burned alive was the same look everyone had.
I actually like what they did to Stannis (kind of). The fact that he went from a generally noble king to a man willing to burn his daughter alive shows the fall of his character. It’s similar to Macbeth, though not written as well. His list for power is what drives him in the end, and I thought it was pretty interesting.
nicholas hadwin I could nerd out with you all day about the Shakespeare parallels in game of thrones ...
The two great prophecies of Hogwarts: Tyrion to be Dany’s hand; Shireen died of red woman. Correct me if wrong and please add if more. I can not remember which episodes she made those predictions/wishes
hey Brian thanks for editing 3 videos each week. I know it must take a lot of your time
Thank you for your gratitude in means so much to us and especially to Brian!
Ser Alliser youve been Damned by Hanna. Finally.
refreshing UA-cam since 2 hours. Thx Hogwarts people
diego hurtado they usually post at 10am est....for future reference
Thx. will remember it ^^
lol, same
I wouldn't worry about Jon. He always comes back
almost there almost caught up.. cant wait for S7
She already knew Shireen's gonna die. Wow! Hannah's predictions are deadly accurate sometimes.
For the night is dark and full of terrors
This and Oberyn's death are the only two scenes I have trouble re-watching. And I actually block Shireen's death out completely. I always forget it's in this episode until I see a reaction.
2:27 sass on point lmaoooooo
Homeslice!
lol i know "home slice!"
3:32 "I like him😊"
Me: oh...well about that...ummm😬 just hit play!"
stanis is basiclly thanos. sacrificing everything for what your expectations
Ugh, that burning scene is, imo, the most horrific scene in all of GoT. The way her cries build until she is in just pure agony =(
I hope Melisandre gets a taste of her own medicine before this is all said and done...
Westeros has some weird traditions for Take your daughter to work Day. Definitely the worst company cookout
Great reactions. I remember watching this and was hoping some of the soldiers would step up and save her from the fire and start a civil war within the baratheon camp. Sadly they were all cowards.
Rip shireen of house burned alive while father watches. For the night is dark and full of terrors.
I love that Jorah is still sitting alone in the Friendzone
can she PLEASE just get a hug???? okay? Hugwarts! I'm not okay right now!
evil chipmunk thank you!! I really needed the hugs!!!
Her reaction to that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be....
Just want to say that I had the most mentally draining day today because of personal issues, so sad and angry and this is absolute therapy and meditation to me, not GoT, but a reaction from you guys. Love Hogwarts, love Brian (could listen to him explaining or talk aaaallllll day), love rock n' roll Jeremy and the rest of the amazing friends, love the comment section family, and this is like a big, virtual hug for me. Thank you for all that you are, and do.
Now, time to watch the reaction, just needed to get that out first, because I have a b s o l u t e l y no one. Sounds pathetic, it kinda' am.
Tons of love from me to you, friends.
Big hug to you friend, so sorry you're having a rough day, but the #hogsquad is definitely here to support you!
Elisabeth Larsen I'm so sorry you've had a rough day! I hope things get better- life is hard sometimes and has no simple answers. Love from us
It is interesting that Ramsey made Stannis face the threat of starvation ... this had happened long ago.
"He's gonna kill her, homeslice." I shouldn't have laughed but I did.
The watch is coming !!!
For the Watch!
I usually skip the burning of Shireen. My heart breaks every time. 😢
I have been through GoT numerous times, and this episode makes my cry more than anything else I've experienced.. fucking horrific scene.
Stannis the Mannis, Father of the Year.
I just noticed Doran said the mother to 4 of my nieces, I wonder why they never showed the 4th.
Oberyn told Cersei in season 4 that he has 8 daughters. They can't keep show and book canon straight.
Fabian Kester that's totally true, I forgot about that.
they only showed one! Tyiene
just because Oberyn had 8 daughters doesn't mean that Ellaria Sand is mother to all of them. Out of the Sand Snakes who appeared in the show, only Tyene is Ellaria's daughter
Stannis finally earned his place on the hate list lol
Spoiler on the Mannis
The murder of the one true king of westeros and his character, may he live on in the books!
put this in a spoiler, because they are reading the books.
solgnaleb got you
He wont
LOL yeah no.
Squirrel at the very least he won't burn his daughter lol
This scene upset me probably more than anything in Game of Thrones. Burning the daughter, along with the character assassination of Stannis Baratheon from the novels.
Yep. I turned a blind eye to what they did to Dorne, Sansa w/Ramsay, and even Jamie semi-raping Cersei after his redemption arc (Not really, but I tried.), but after this moment a couldn't do it anymore. D&D clearly do not know these characters and they're actively destroying some of them in the name of shock value or due to shear stupidity. It's reprehensible.
So did you stop watching the show then?
GambitX37 Stannis burning the daughter is happened in the books though. D&D talk about it after the episode that this was George's idea
My understanding is that she will be burned in the books, but there was no indication that it will be perpetrated by Stannis like in the show. And it certainly hasn't happened yet, as of the fifth book.
Shireen, the beautiful, sweet little princess. Her screams are chilling and so devastating. UGH!!!! When I first saw this, I knew Stannis was going ahead with it because he sent Davos away. I'm sure they would have had to kill Davos if he was there. So glad that half the men couldn't stomach it either and left.
I never cried so hard watching a tv show as I did watching this, I could hardly catch my breath after this. I'm a mother of a 5 years old girl and this was the worst thing I've ever seen in GOT.
Lol, was that a *sad* clink after "bless"?
I mean it was absolutely dumb move from series directors to kill Shireen, even if TV Stannis is a dick he wouldnt do that, but they needed to end Stannis's thread so they made him kill his own daughter so fans wouldnt feel sad for him
My least favorite episode of GoT ever. The way that it was designed so that you still had Shireens screams echoing in your ear when the next scene comes up. I couldn't quite feel the joy of Dany's first ride on Drogon. :-(
angie 808....danny/dragon scene was nothing compared to shireens death.
MJ #PGandCHILL But this entire character arc has been so bad.
MJ #PGandCHILL...no one agrees with you.
Our good Lord Ramsey took revenge on Stannis for this
Your not supposed to her death is metaphorical for the death of another king blood jsnow
SHE KNEW SHEREEN WAS GOING TO GET KILLED??!!! SOMEONE SPOILED IT FOR HER IM CONVINCED I HAD NO IDEA AT ALL!!
I swear, I love Stannis from the books..
But I can't stand him at all in the show, Everytime I see this scene i break down.. just seeing this beautiful young helpless girl get burned for his father's legacy.. It's just to much.
Nah, I still love him in the show. He's the only King we actually see fight. We don't even see Robb in battle. Stannis we see in 3 battles. Leads the charge in 2.
@@CrackingCody Stannis was in my A tier since he was first introduced. Rose up to the bottom of the S tier in the beginning of season 5. This episode he dropped straight to the F.
1:48 Where is Walder Frey? Or the Mountain?
Does anyone know a series or movie where an army destroys a camp or city by setting fire to hundreds of horses which in return runs in panic through the camp/city burning it to the ground? Cant figure out where i have seen it before
Rikard Galfi I think it might have been Marco Polo on Netflix. I do know that it was one of Genghis Khan's tactics. :-)
Yes!! That sounds just about right! Thanks!!
I've heard that most people forgave Melisandre afterwards. I didn't. I always remembered that during this terrible scene everyone looked so very horrified and broken - Stannis, Selyse, Baratheon soldiers - and SHE was the only one wearing a smug and pleased face. I mean, come on! Even if you truly believe this has to be done to save the world, how can you rejoice at that sight?
I don't get why Stannis is so popular, he's a monster, plain and simple.
He's not like this in the books, and this scene doesn't even make sense for the show version of Stannis. The show runners don't understand or like his character. This is not who Stannis is. They ruined him in the show.
I haven't read the books, though I'd like to one day. From my point of view the show is its own thing, just inspired by the books. A lot of literature turned into film is like that. As long as I view it that way it doesn't really bother me. However I do agree that Stannis' behavior was inconsistent sometimes.
If the sacrifice isn’t difficult then it is no true sacrifice. Stannis sacrificed one to save the whole realm. The one true king
Here we go with this whole food thing again! I'm trying NOT to gain weight! Kidding, I love food. I can't believe this is the longest I've ever had to wait before watching one of your reactions!
NevskiLoL I'm glad you finally made it!
we were getting a little worried about you- about to call the search squad!
Hahaha! My phone was dead as well so I couldn't leave gif's on twitter or anything. I was so bummed out lol.
NOW WE TALKING....
That scream makes me ill every time.
to this day.. i still can not listen to Shireen's cries for mercy at the pyre .
always mute and look away :((
Tell me, did you ever wonder why the men of the Night's Watch take no wives and father no children?
So they will not love. Love is the death of duty. If the day should ever come when your lord father was forced to choose between honor on the one hand and those he loves on the other, what would he do?
Then Lord Stark is one man in 10,000. Most of us are not so strong. What is honor compared to a woman's love? And what is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms? Or a brother's smile?
We're all human. Oh, we all do our duty when there's no cost to it. Honor comes easy then. Yet sooner or later in every man's life there comes a day when it's not easy. A day when he must choose.
Aemon Targaryen
Few people actually remember Maester Aemon said that. Well done!
mace tyrell is such a tool :-D
I was just wondering if y'all received my post cards. I was promised an autographed pic of y'all and haven't received it yet. Any luck? Thnx a bunch!
I was also thinking... y'all should have a contest where one subscriber can come and watch an episode with u guys next year when it's released. We pay our own way, get our own hotel and maybe do dinner, drinks, and watch the episode with y'all? That would be cool to do.
Gary Greenburg that's a great idea :):) we will get those pics out to y'all ASAP! Just a lot going on here but we promise we will
Stannis sold his soul to rock n roll.
2K views in 60 minutes? Yeah.. y'all should start selling "Hogwarts Merch"
Working on it for you weenie woos :)
Beware J.K. Rowling sniffing around when the name 'Hogwarts' appears on stuff
Exactly why its taking us some time we can't put any trademarked words :/
Anyone else feel dirty hitting the like button?
Although he was never my favorite, I didn't hate Stannis, until this moment...And for me it was harder to watch than the Red Wedding...
Goddamn it hurry up and release episode 10. the salt of your tears sustains me
Ser Davos Homeslice Seaworth.
hahaha that's funny
shireen's death was most underrated terrible event happened in GOT !
Idk I still see it in top 3 of most lists out there.
For the watch
Will you ever react to the coldplay musical and other stuff of the sort?
Yes we did, and we will release them at some point we promise :)
Hogwarts Reacts awesome thanks
Stannis (An honest, honorable man. A realist, who's a bit of a hardass, yet clearly loves his daughter.) allows this to happen while his wife (A crazy, true believer, and psycho.) has a change of heart and tries for a redemptive 'save' at the last minute. Yeah... makes perfect sense.
This was the episode that made me hate D&D. They butchered my favorite character Stannis from what he was in the books and just acting like Dorne was pointless to save time.
This single scene made me hate Stannis more than Joffrey, Ramsey, and Cersei combined.
Oh, no. 😢
I mean, you only roast the ones you love...right?
How did it take her this long to hate Alistair
I think I'll be number ten thousand who said this, but D&D made really poor job in handling Stannis' role. There are plenty of book readers who like Stannis a lot. But basically all show watcher's who haven't read books, haven't spent a single minute liking Stannis.
Its sad because Stannis is a lot more respectable & a much bigger deal in the books. D&D made him look like this complete loser & Melisandre's whipping boy. He made his own decisions & had a goddamn conscience of his own without Ser Davos & Melisandre vying for his soul like they were in the show. That's why I hated Jon & Sansa's plot in season 6 because in my mind I was yelling, "Damnit!!!!!! Stannis did most of this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (Except for Battle of Bastards of course haha)
not all, many liked stannis until the shireen death.
I read the books, and I never spent a single moment liking Stannis. Sorry. There is nothing respectable about him. Readers just tend to get as blinded by him as Davos does. Oooh, he followed the law. So what? So did Ned Stark, but he never was like this. Sure, he executed men for breaking their oaths to the Night's Watch, but he never mutilated people who had saved his life just because of petty crimes. And he certainly never became a cultist who watched his in-laws burn to death or allowed his cult leader to murder his own brother so he could have a bigger army. He also never WHINED so goddamned much about his "rights" like Stannis does. Stannis is a manchild with serious middle child syndrome, pouting about how everyone loved Renly and Robert and didn't love him. His claims of not wanting the Iron Throne was bullshit and everyone fell for it.
StormWolf AMEN!!!
I've read the books, and I don't like Stannis at all. I really do not see the appeal of him.
The burning of Shireen is the absolute lowpoint of the show for me. We've come to know this girl, know her good heart and compassion. And then they decide to burn her. There's no forgiveness for anyone involved in this activity.
@Gevorg1989 Shireen is still alive in the books.
@Gevorg1989 Yes, but every storyline has not been followed faithfully by the series. Both Shireen and Stannis are alive so far in the books, as well as Mance Rayder, Ser Barristan Selmy, Myrcella Baratheon and more.
Yessss
Shereeeeen
Shireen*
Squad.
squad!
Oh come on, how can you actually HATE Stannis pre this episode? And you still hate Theon even now?! But you LOVE characters like Greyworm, Bronn, and like characters like Kevan? You somehow like Miranda MORE than people like Stannis and Theon?! You're crazy.
This is the most disturbing episode in the entire show.
If this were Season 7, Stannis would have run in at the last minute and saved his daughter. GoT seems to have forgotten it's okay to kill good guys.
Stannis shouldn't have done this. He should have been lured away or drugged and the Mother should have burned her. Stannis then should have killed her in anger and Melisandre should have run away in fear after Stannis lost his mind in grief. Would have been more tragic that way. Instead they made a Stannis into a shitty character very quickly.
Stannis did it, not just because he thought it would help him to the throne, but because he thought he was the only hope to save all of Westeros from the Army of the Dead and this was the only way to do it.
So he basically had a choice, his daughters life for a short time until they all would be killed by the Walkers, or kill his daughter and save everyone else. I agree the D&D should have made that point clearer, but it was there.
I don't know man. The Stannis we saw so far in the show before that showed great love for his daughter to the point where he made it very clear he would not/never sacrifice her. The way the show went about it was awful. Even in the books that love is still there.
I know D&D said GM told them that's how she dies supposedly in the books but I don't think for one second Stannis is gonna burn her and it'll be her mum and Melisandre behind Stannis' back. That or Shirreen willingly sacrifices herself IF, IF Stannis is/has died in the books so far. I'm only on Book 3 so far so Idk but I've researched some stuff.
I️ think you are no longer a summer child
Jacob Flores She hasn't been a summer child since the Red Wedding
do you guys have to eat all of the time it's noise and very disruptive. UGH I have to fast forward a lot!
